Something strange that we had at my elementary school was this one day event in third grade called "Said is Dead". Basically, the whole point was to stop using the word "said" in our sentences when we were writing dialogue, and to use more creative words like "replied" or "yelled". But we treated it like a funeral. All of the classrooms are decorated with black and we had to wear black clothes as if we were going to a funeral. We even had a short memorial service for the word. Looking back on it, it was pretty strange..

In Australia we had a rule that was “No hat no play” which basically meant you had to watch everyone running around and having fun while you had to sit in the undercover areas and the worst part was that it wasn’t even always enforced or it was enforced on some kids and not enforced on other kids it also especially sucked if all your friends had their hats and they would just ditch you to go play somewhere else
I don't live in Australia but when I was in school I had that rule too!

One thing about Elementary School that I found weird is how they don’t really seem to care what books you read from the library as long as they either look like kids books or are popular with kids. I was reading books about politics, bigotry, war, trauma, forbidden romance and death by the third grade. The book series in question were Harry Potter, Animorphs and Warriors. Needless to say YA fiction became my niche afterwards. Fun Fact: The Wings of Fire series of kids books *starts* with an infanticide and a homicide!

The big plot twist in the second Wizard of Oz book was that Tip, the peasant slave boy that served as the main character, is revealed to actually be *princess* Ozma. Keep in mind that this book is over a century old, and they had *two* full on transitions with the same character. One as part of the backstory and another as part of the main plot. She’s also implied to have a crush on Dorothy, and are depicted kissing but it’s portrayed as platonic.
Although the start of the book was with a forced marriage..
Bro those books aren’t that deep as you think they are. YA may sound “grown up”, but really, read some of the real classics and you’ll learn what “dark” literature is. YA is for literally 1st graders.
Something I would like to point out: Schools are always like, "Okay class, tomorrow you have a test so make sure that you get a good 9 hours of sleep!" That makes sense but then, "Okay, your homework is to read pages 56-90 of your Spanish textbook and then write 3 paragraphs describing what you read." Like what on EARTH? They say, "Get a good sleep!" when THEY'RE the ones causing sleep deprivation..

Heck I graduated back in May and I STILL have bags under my eyes, sleep deprivation, and a bad sleep schedule cause my body decided we are gonna go make up for all those years of not getting sleep but we’re gonna throw it down all at once

Also kids have other things to do after school, even elementary school kids. Chores, going with mom while she runs errands, watching your siblings, hopefully having a social life where you play with other kids outside (which is essential for child development), maybe doing extra curricular activities, etc. I think schools have this weird idea that most kids just stare at a wall and do nothing once they come home from school. Lol
Plus I drama club ends at 5:30 (that’s 5 days a week) and I live a half hour from school
My old school nurse would LIE about calling your parents when you were sick. She would literally just say “hello, is this _______ parent. He says he feels sick, can you pick him up” to the phone without having anyone on the other line. Plus she would always be like “I’m so sorry but your mum says you have to stay in school”. She seemed so nice but she was just lying to freakin’ 9 year olds

I remember at one of the schools I went to the nurse would call my friend dramatic all the time for stuff. And the nurse at one pointed guilted me for lying. Like, literally went to the classroom I was in and made me cry because they thought I lied.
I never had any other school nurses act like that though. Only that one. All the others I've seen were pretty nice
I got thrown up on one time and the nurse wouldn’t let me go home and shower and then come back so i got my dad to prick me up so i could shower and i didn’t come back ✌️

Something that I didn’t get in kindergarten, was nap time. I got nap time in preschool, but not kindergarten. It was devastating. I remember seeing these blue cushion things on the first day of school on the shelf, thinking we would get a nap time. It never came. I felt gaslighted. Those cushions were never used. It just sat there collecting dust.

In fourth grade, I apparently was rapidly improving playing the recorder and when my music teacher was talking to my mom, she told her that I should start taking private music lessons to prepare for the middle school music classes.
I wanted to take vocal lessons, my mom said she wasn't wasting money on that, then forced me to play an instrument I had no interest in and didn't like from fourth grade to half way through eighth grade. Almost had to beg her to let me quit.
On the bright side, I did have the courage to join the choir class in eighth grade and just didn't tell my mom until the school year started. Still in choir as a senior in high school. So what was the waste of money now?

As an employee in a school, I agree with a lot of this, but if you ask if the children are bad at logistics, then yes. Yes, they are. Also, no, I don't know where they go, but if I don't watch them, it is not the lunchroom.

As a substitute teacher, I don’t understand why most of these things were done. But I do agree with the whole “placebo for a dramatic kid” when referring to the ice water in the paper towel. It’s actually really funny seeing how self-important all these school nurses act when that is literally all they do. Unless they have to call the parent because the child has to get picked up to go to the doctor or another nurse at the hospital. So weird. His next video should be about the medical fields/hospitals because I understand their rules even less than schools.

As someone who has been in a school fire, I can confirm that no one at least in my grade walked calmly, teachers were also running. I couldn’t run it my shoes so I ran out of the building barefoot.
That’s the thing that’s been bothering me, they expect us to walk in straight lines and be calm during those drills but when there’s actually a fire I can guarantee nobody’s gonna do that. Fire drills are just a waste of time lol.

One thing I remember from elementary school that seemed normal but was actually really weird: There was like an extra class I went to. It was just a small group and the teacher would have the class repeat this saying at the start of this class that goes like: "Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought him back." I remember arguing with my dad that that is how the saying really goes and my dad thought it was totally ridiculous. Now looking back I can understand why he thought that and I have no clue why my teacher felt like she needed to engrave this idea into our minds.
Y’all remember those torture devices that were the “color cards”? Like the teacher would yell at you to go flip your card if you made one single mistake?

EXCUSE ME. We are EATING during lunch, and then the food has to have time to DIGEST. Also, I HAVE TO GO. Would you rather I just stay there? Like what if I got my period? Do I have to wait another 42 minutes until Spanish Class is over and we have our 5 minute passing period to go put a pad on? It takes like two minutes to go to the bathroom. I think I can miss what ‘son las dos menos cuarto’ means. I think I would learn that by the next class anyway.

My sister actually has bladder issues (which is written on her file) and has pissed herself in the middle of class multiple times because a teacher wouldn't let her go despite it.
The worst part is that teachers say: "You should've gone during lunch" in highschool.
No joke. Some teachers are cool about it cause now these students are like older teens and they know their body best.

The physical fitness tests were state mandated (and still are in some places) despite there never actually being any evidence that they did anything other than make kids feel bad. The podcast Maintenance Phase did a really great episode on them called "The President's Physical Fitness Test" if you want to learn more.
I hated the physical fitness tests. It was unfair when my school in California's guidelines was that the heavier you weighted, the shorter the time you had to run a mile.
Yeah, I hated those. Weighing kids and teenagers is awful and really only leads to self hatred. I was so uncomfortable because I weighed less than everyone else in the class by a lot.

Ugh…I remember these. WHAT WAS THE POINT?!?!?
All this did was give me severe body issues. I’m sorry that because I weigh a normal amount and that the ‘other girls’ are fucking twigs that I have to do extra work. (‘Other girls’ meaning that one group of 2-3 twigs)
I remember always being frustrated because the size difference between me and the other kids skewed the results of those tests.
At adult height I am just shy of five feet tall. In elementary school, the difference was even more pronounced because I was technically born a month after the age cutoff, while many kids had been red-shirted and I think the average classmate was nine or ten months older than me, many being over a year and the oldest almost two years older. Also, it was a taller-than-average neighborhood to begin with. The combined effects resulted in me having a few classmates as early as third grade who were already a reasonable adult height, taller than I'll ever be.
Consequently I was always last in the mile run, even though I probably would have scored solidly in the middle if I was raced against a group of kids whose legs were the same length as mine. Just sayin'.
Also, when I started elementary school, I didn’t understand the concept of tests, so I looked up answers during a test. Got in a lot of trouble. 😅 Fortunately my mom explained my thought process to the teacher and she was a little more understanding and made sure I knew looking up how to spell a word wasn’t part of testing, and she let me try again.
My first two years of elementary were technically at a glorified daycare, so it came as quite a shock in third grade that I wouldn’t be able to decide, “I don’t wanna learn about this boring science stuff, I’m gonna go to our library corner and read a book.”
Thankfully, my teacher that year was also an avid bookworm, so I didn’t get into *too* much trouble for that.
I’ll never forget how my school gave the heaviest door to our KINDERGARTEN CLASS. The only one in the entire school, with one of the heaviest doors on the planet. I’m not kidding when I say I saw a kids finger get cut off by that door. Ran into him a few years later, and sure enough, the tip of his pinkie is very much gone.
Just a fun story from elementary school, so one day we were doing a tornado drill, and then later that day the tornado warning alarms actually went off for real. A tornado touched down a couple towns away from my school, I had barely any idea what was going on though because I was a dumb first grader, but at least I was at a second grade math level! And fialed art for drawing what I was supposed to, but just being a little creative. Public school isn't traumatizing at all!

Bro, true story, (Fourth Grade) I came into the nurse’s office with both of my wrists fractured (They were both a buckle fracture thank GOD) and she gave me a pillow off of the cot nearby, let my wrists rest on it, and gave me a single ice pack. A SINGLE ONE. Not two for both arms, one. She would switch it back and forth between wrists while waiting for my parents to arrive. When she had called my mom she was like “So it seems like she got hurt on her school trip and is now shedding a lot of crocodile tears.”
I’m so glad that my nurses from middle school were so much better, dunno about high school yet, haven’t been in their office.
7:25 it’s been a while but I took a “library assistant” class in middle school(it was pretty much an unpaid job at the library now that I think about it), the Dewey decimal system allows the librarians to keep the books organized with ease so it’s easier for patrons to find books based on subject. It’s been a long time my memory of the subject is foggy, but I do remember that it was important
I'm so glad that the teachers that did enforce assigned seats for high school at least, waited a month before assigning them. They'd let you sit wherever you wanted and that's usually by friends. Then after the month they'd assign seats. Anyone who got distracted by a friend and wasn't able to do the work was seperated to some extent and if you were able to still do the work even around your friend or help each other when needed they'd keep you together. At least then there's some planning and merite to the assigned seats
School in a nutshell: Wake up at 7 am everyday and if you don’t your parents go to jail.

I remember at my school, there were 2 incidents of serious injuries, both of them happening with kids in my class. There was this boy who managed to somehow, idk how it even happened since I was at the other side of the playground at the time, fracture his skull. And another time, this girl fell backwards off one of those large net swings and managed to, like, crack her head open. Both times, an ambulance was called, but since there was some distance between the hospital and our school, it took a while for the ambulance to get there. So what did the teachers do? USE A FUCKING WET PAPER TOWEL- like, THESE PEOPLE ARE SERIOUSLY FUCKING INJURED, AND YOUR FIRST THOUGHT IS TO GIVE THEM A WET PIECE OF PAPER. What's that even gonna fucking do???
My mom worked for the Boys and Girls Club straight out of high school (late 70’s), and they had a kid split his head open once day. The other teachers went and tried to use a dirty sponge and my mom was like “Wtf no, he is bleeding, you don’t use something dirty. Get some clean paper towels and we’ll apply pressure until the paramedics arrive.” What was even worse was that the staff all had gone through basic first aid and cpr training just a few days before.
Here in the US, some people are trying to get teachers to be armed with guns at schools. Meanwhile, they don't even know basic first aid.

When my brother was in 5th grade (sixth year primary/ 10-11 years old) he was dared to use parts of the older unused recess equipment since he was pretty good a doing things smaller kids were too scared to do (because he was already like 5ft 7-ish). One time he got dared to climb on this really old chain linked wall climber at recess during the spring and went up and came back down with ease. Well then a friend of his asked to race him to the top, so then a bunch of kids gathered around to watch them race to see who could climb up one side and down the other the fastest; so they start and a teacher came over to supervise. Well my brother has big feet to go with his big body so about most of the way up the wall he gets his right foot stuck in one of the chain foot holds, panics and looses hold of the bar at the top and falls off with his foot still stuck in the chains and the right side of his body slams into the support beam and a few links broke as he fell so now he’s swinging from the chain wall upside down, his head like 3-4 inches from the ground and all the kids and the friend freeze in shock. The teacher runs to my brother and asks him if he’s okay, his response is “uhm idk” and he tries to pull himself up the support beam to move his foot out of the chain and his friend carefully scoots over to help him, but my brother tells him not to and so his friend jumps to the ground and has the teacher help him hold my brother up, after a few seconds my brother manages to untie his shoe and asks them to lower him down once gets his foot out of his shoe and he get clumsily lowered to the ground and the nurse comes out (she’d been called by another teacher who was supervising recess) and checks him over, the nurse and the friend help him stand up and he complains that his thigh hurts, so the nurse asks him to roll up the end of his shorts to show her where it hurts; and there’s already a huge red mark and a cut (presumably from one of the broken chain links) in his leg, she has the teacher run for a wheelchair and has the other teacher call the office to contact our mom and his dad. He needed a few stitches and wasn’t aloud to continue soccer that year (he still sat at games though). Needless to say my mom was so upset/pissed and the school removed the chain climbing wall 😬

When I was in elementary school, we never got naps unless you have a super bad headache or broke your arm(I witnessed this happen once.) This was Kindergarten.
As for the nurse, I had a few bad experiences with them.
1. My arm was shaking like heck, they didn't do a thing and a week later got sick, with fluffing pink eye.
2. Nurse read temp wrong to my mom and said it was a 105.0°F when it was 100.5°F
3. Threw up during recess, she did nothing.
No silent reading, just group reading in school.
The behavior sticker rewards(if good you get a sticker, if not then no sticker)
Had to pick a book every week(I ended getting about 15 books, couldn't read them all and put them back)
Fun fact: I asked if I could go to the bathroom (I really needed to go) teacher denyed me, so I ended up doing the chair. I was 3rd grade. Because I couldn't go and another student was out. I even said it was urgent.

This must have been the normal people elementary through middle school experience, because most of this never happened to me. And we had to audition to be in the talent show. I got regected twice.
Also, as for the science fairs, the normal science classes didn't have to put any effort into it (lucky bastards weren't even required to participate), but we had to write an entire research paper on how our middle school science projects would effect the world around for my advanced science class. It was a mandatory part of the grade. One girl did an active hydroponics setup, and I made a functioning water turbine. I hated it.

I remember everyone in my 4th grade class did the science fair... except for me. Because little me didn't really have anyone to do it with and my parents were busy at the time. Worst part is is that everyone gets a participation medal, so literally everyone in my class but me was wearing a very cool medal that day. I probably cried.
Our uniform requires “skirts must not be 2 inches above the knee”

“Boys may not have hair longer that their collar”
But why?
School uniform policies are so stupid. I go to a public school in Australia and the uniforms are the crappiest things you could ever see but they cost $75 a piece.

Alright, I have a few stories about my middle school(if you care to read all of them).
First, my annoying dress code. We had one of the ugliest shirt and pants for dress code. The only redeeming article of clothing was the skirt. But, they just couldn’t make up their minds! People would get in trouble for wearing the SCHOOL SKIRT. The skirt SOLD by the SCHOOL! My sister literally got ask once if she was wearing shorts under her skirt once. Like, why doesn’t the school just sell skirts with built in shorts instead of expecting the kids to magically know they should wear shorts???
The second is recess. Depending on your grade level, they’d host outdoor recess with certain grades on one side of the recess area and split another group of grades on the other. Depending on which side your class is on would decide whether you get to play soccer on the soccer field or not. Also, depending on which side you were on decided the recess equipment you got. They left it all on one side, didn’t really bother to move some over to the other side.
I don’t know if anyone else’s school had this, but mines had fun Friday. For like an hour before school ended on Fridays, my teachers would allow the students to play or they’d put on a movie to watch. But with that being said, fun Friday could also be taken away. If the class, full of energetic kids, was not behaving up to par, there would be no fun Friday. And there was always that one kid that ruined it. If you were that kid, then you’d be someone with a lot of enemies. And the teacher always seemed to nick pick. Even if everyone else was completely silent, they’d still take it away because of that one kid. Like, they were the reason kids had grudges against each other.
My biggest pet peeves were silent lunch. For some reason, they wanted to do announcements during lunch time. And you know how lunch is. Your sitting down, eatings and chatting with your friends. But no, they wanted silence during the announcements. They wanted a group of kids, sitting and enjoying their lunch with their friends, the be completely silence for, what they called, five minutes(definitely didn’t feel like five minutes). If the lunch room wasn’t quite, they’d give out silent lunch. Which men’t, assigned seats, and you weren’t suppose to talk. It was the most sad and dead lunch on those days. Though, if you and your friends were right behind each other in the line, you could maybe get assigned a seat next to each other.

the class president one made memories resurface of when i ran for the position in middle school. I said to someone that maybe i should run as a joke, stated it was a joke, but apparently that counted as an entry to the teachers and apparently i was not allowed to drop out, so i got to skip some classes to sit in the auditorium/church thing and listen to other students prepare their speeches for student council election.
day of the election i think i basically said something along the lines of "i didn't really intend to be here. This is kinda stupid, but hey. Since i'm here, vote for me i guess."
I didn't win (because essentially no one knew i was running), but I think i stole enough votes from one candidate to let another candidate win, or at least i have a vague memory of being confronted by losing candidate afterward about that and just assume that's what happen since I don't trust the details of that memory.

As someone who works in the school system. The line thing makes so much sense. It's how we prevent seven year olds from getting mixed with the wrong class by accident when going to gym or art. Ok, the Macarena was taught in my elementary school, and it's a cool yet simple dance to a song with a catchy beat. Until you listen to the lyrics. The Macarena is a song about a woman, going to "clubs" and possibly taking men home with her, she also cheats on her boyfriend with his two friends. So we are made to dance to a woman whoring herself out at clubs and to her lover's friends when we are 5-11ish.

tbh the assigned seats wasn't bad for me. every once in a while we got to do a shuffle without the teacher needing to approve so we could sit next to our friends then, only problem was that if you started to not like them later on you were stuck til the next shuffle
It really depends for me, I was stuck next to a bully for months and I wasn’t allowed to move and then for the first time that year we were able to choose where we sat for the rest of the year, I’m not exaggerating when I say I *BOLTED* to my friends
I sit in tables bc my school is more low budget then you think and bc of covid the tables changed every 2-3 months so a lot of people to sit with
@@malaikamazome6520 that’s some what what my school had, the class I talked about in my original reply had tables because it was science (8th grade so we needed lab stuff like a sink, god if feels weird talking about it in past tense) and where we were told to sit somewhere different every few months, no matter how much we hated the people we sat with, along with my English class (but I was conveniently placed with my friends and was able to stay with them all year because my teacher was too lazy to rearrange the seating chart regularly) the others had desks and for a short time one had the desks in clusters that were considered “tables”. Although my school is willing to buy desks for all the other classes it’s not willing to spend on anything else, no matter how rich it is…amazing how well the government spreads the money out between public schools…
in my science class we can sit wherever we want which is great.

I relate to the uniforms. My middle school was really strict on their dress code, so I protested by drawing my characters burning school uniforms, ripping them up, etc. It wasn't really that "rebellious", but my friends thought it was funny

My schools dress code is super strict. For the girls it’s no tank tops. No ripped jeans. Shorts must be 2 inches above the knee, no hair dye, one pair of earrings, one bracelet, no leggings and no yoga pants, no make up. No boots. Also no “distracting hair accessories”. For the boys It’s no hair dye and ear piercings. No opened toed shoes for both. There is more but I can’t remember. 😭

Start times: It makes sense to have early start times for elementary students because they're younger and haven't yet been affected by the circadian rhythm shift that occurs during puberty but definitely middle school and high school should have later start times.
Test dividers: Agree and also they didn't even really work you could still peek around them sometimes. In fact they may even incentivize cheating more since you can use them to look at notes without the teacher realizing as readily.
Spelling tests: Fully agree
Science fairs: I mean yeah most of the experiments the kids did were not really useful for life in the long run but at least they were fun
Bathroom passes: I agree it is unsanitary, there's only a limited number of them and students might lose them. I think the more practical way to keep students accountable for bathroom breaks is to make them sign a check out sheet and keep track of how long and how often they leave using it.
Field trips: Yeah I agree the way they relied on parent volunteers to chaperone was sort of irresponsible they should at least vet the people they choose to chaperone trips.
Yearbooks: I didn't even get yearbooks until middle school, but yeah.
Recorders in music class: I agree, I get the reasons they choose recorders because they're cheap and easy to play but I feel like there are better alternatives for instruments to get the students to try for their first instrument. Recorders sound horrible. I've heard some schools use ukuleles instead, this sounds much better imo.
Q & U wedding: I didn't know that was a thing, it does sound ridiculous though.
Scholastic book fairs: Fully agree
School fundraisers: Fully agree also it's super creepy and dangerous to expect kids to go sell things at people's houses...
Nap time: Agree going back to your previous point about the start times either they need to start middle school and high school later or they need to include nap time in the schedules
Assigned seats: I know kids don't really like it but looking at it from an adult/potential teacher perspective, I understand why this is important. It helps keep the class more structured and not as chaotic as it would be if you just let students sit wherever they want. If you just let them sit wherever they want they will just sit next to their friends, be super chatty and not get anything done and this also disrupts the entire class even if it's just a few students doing it. Yeah it's not good if you're next to someone you don't get along with but in that circumstance the student should request that the teacher change their seat and explain why. I know if I were the teacher I'd be understanding and change the student's seat if that's the situation.
School nurses: Agreed I think school nurses are a great idea but they should be able to do more things.
Detention: Yeah I think detention in elementary school (keeping a kid inside during recess like you're describing) is cruel and unusual punishment. There are other ways to deal with misbehaving students. Then by the time you get into middle school and high school I feel like detention is just sort of pointless because it's not even really a punishment, you just stay after school and do homework that you would've had to do anyway at home...
Lining up to go down the hallway: Like another commenter said yes kids are really bad a logistics and you need to have some way to keep them under control so that they go where they need to go. So for that reason I understand the point of lines.
Physical fitness tests: Fully agree
Blue paper towels: Not familiar with those but it sounds like the concept of using them was similar to using ice packs.

As a high schooler in a school that DOES start later (9:30) the reason most schools don’t do this is because the timing, while ideal for when students should wake up, is also worse because we are spending even less time at home a w a k e since we have to get at least 7 hours of school (9:30-4:18, goes until 5:10 for clubs and 7 or 8 for sports) then go home, do your graded homework, and by the time you finish it’ll be like 2 am in the morning (depending on how productive you were and how much work there was to complete) and then you have to go to bed and wake up at either 6 or 8 just to get to school on time (6 is for sports).
TL;DR Waking up later would be ideal but it’ll only work in a situation where school isn’t 7 hours long or if there was an asynchronous work day because otherwise it would ruin your social life + home life

Bro I didnt understand and still don’t why we weren’t aloud to work together on a lot of our work. In real life you are aloud to ask questions and work together with people. School might try to teach you how to be independent, but it also teaches you to not ask questions and to work by yourself or you will get in trouble. Also detention makes no sense. When I was in 7th grade I had to babysit kids every week, I had piano lessons, and I had singing lessons. Detention basically made it so I would be late. At the end of the day we also had to say our favourite part of the day so we could do it more, which always made me super stressed because I had babysitting and stuff that I had to do right away. Schools sure something else.

I'm always really confused when ppl talk about middle schools like... y'all had school nurses? I went to school with the flu, was too feverish to learn but was so terrified of them calling my dad I spent most of the day sitting on a hard plastic table in a room with a light that was too bright while periodically begging the secretary not to call him in between her doing paperwork. We didn't have a school nurse.

I remember school pets, waking up too early to go to school, makeshift book covers, test barriers, signing year books, bathroom passes, book fairs, recorders, naps, and assigned seats so far.
The assigned seats btw were actually kinda welcome by me, but that's just because I was that one kid at least half the class picked on, some more than others, so if I can be forcibly put on the opposite end of the room as one of those people, that is fine by me.
Edit: I also remember line leaders, story time, tether ball, class presidents, fire drills, and spelling bees.
One thing my school did that I didn't understand was this sorta cowboy dance that we had to do for PE this one year. I never understood why. Another thing, though this was more on my family than the school, I had to ask for homework in 1st grade. One of my older sisters, who acted as a sort of parental figure even though both parents were around, insisted that I had to have homework. I never understood why.
I gotta say, I've got a friend who falls asleep in class next to me almost every day. (It's very entertaining to watch and we're both in high school) She would DEFINIETLY benefit from having a nap

I woke up at 5:00 to go to school for twelve years and I hated it. I've graduated though. I also played the recorder in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and was fairly decent at it but I still didn't get the point of it. Also I honestly miss nap time. Especially in high school and college naps are essential if you don't want to fall asleep in class.

Oh kids ABSOLUTELY played with the tether ball at my elementary and middle school. The older elementary kids would split between that and jump rope (yes, jump rope was THE thing when I was in 5th grade), but the tetherball was only abandoned when it was broken, which happened about every month.
Lmao, I would go to detention all the time, but that was because I wasn't very popular and I liked detention more than talking to people and being outside, so I stood inside and watched them get heatstroke outside in the heat, Lmao

My elementary school was horrible some times, we had assigned lunch seats (they separated the friends), my fifth grade teacher would disappear randomly to go flirt with the sixth grade teacher (we timed it the longest she’d been gone was twenty minutes), the p.e coach would scream at you for no reason if he didn’t think you were “smart” enough, i remember he wouldn’t let me participate for the entire dance unit with my best friends because I missed five minutes of warm up’s doing a program to help me understand third grade math a bit better. The teacher sees, walks up to me, and is like: "Oh, did you know the author of those books died recently?" and then just walked away. You know for my science fair project. It was actually a good idea to do. I tested if masks actually restricted the amount of oxygen in your bloodstream ( this was during the height of the pandemic and no it does affect anything).
My 4th grade class got 2 female Rats (named Mrs Frisbee and Maggie). Our teacher was a mad animal lover and he let them out of their cages every morning to run around the classroom. Usually he would have trouble catching Maggie to put her back so sometimes we’d see her running along the whiteboard, up the teachers leg/shoulder, and sometimes surprise in one of our desks 😅 we got them as babies.
Mrs Frisbee got a tumor like 3 years later and that class raised money for her surgery. $800 to remove a tumor from a rat. She lived another half year after that.
He got a Parrot after that….Esmeralda. She’s still very much alive :)

At my elementary school we would do AR tests. Basically you would take a test on a book after reading it. I never really liked them because I never understood why we had to take a test on a book we read.

Now that I'm an adult, I actually miss being able to go to school. What I miss most is the gym. We didn't have anything fancy like a foam pit or trampolines like you'd find in a gymnastics gym, but we had rings and bars and beams... Just imagining all the stuff I would've been able to learn back then when I was still young enough hurts me so much. (My parents were against me doing any physical activity, so they didn't let me take dance or gymnastics classes like I always wanted to. We didn't learn anything like that in P.E. either, but if back then I had the knowledge I have now, maybe I would've been able to teach myself some stuff and I wouldn't be working on getting my cartwheel since 9 months today. Maybe I could do a backflip or a back handspring or a roundoff or anything like that now. But no, instead my mother decided that she wants to feed me with junkfood, make me obese and give me a binge eating disorder. Thanks mom! I could've been an athlete now instead of being a homeless, jobless, useless human being who's sleeping on the floor behind her father's TV.)
When I was in elementary school we had like these so called, “lunch ladies”. They had like sauces in their apron. They also had utensils. And a pair of scissors to open the sauce (they are adults). And the funny thing is, they make 4 students clean 4 15 feet long tables. Yet during lunch all they did was grab a paper towel and wipe things. That’s it. Another dumb thing the school did was like we had to listen to music in the middle of lunch and we weren’t allowed to talk. We could only eat. And I think all of the students left the school with no ear drums.

My scholastic book fair was more than just books, there were cool erasers, cool pens, squishies, decent pencil cases, etc. They also got the grade 6/7s to help out and for helping we were given a free eraser and it was actually fun

Story: I’ve told this story before but it’s so stupid what happened I want to complain again. 😅
So what happened was I was running on my playground (it was gravel with a sports court) and I fell really hard on the gravel and bended my hands really weird and I was brought into the nurse office and two nurses were looking and they were saying “Oh your fine. Nothings broken” at this point my wrist was white, the colour. I went back to my class later and was trying to do my work but it was really painful. I can’t believe that nobody noticed what had happened. My teacher had to write for me because every time I tried to put pen to paper I was crying and after I went home and soon as my mum saw my wrist she knew. My wrist was broken and I had to have it in a splint first then a cast. It was so dumb the teachers didn’t figure it out and if they did they would’ve tried to put a paper towel on it. 🙄

Once when I was doing some recordings for a project outside the classroom and a teacher was making her students balance books in their heads and if the books dropped then the students had to go to the back of the line. I’m pretty sure that the teacher was just joking but who knows at this point. I have a few recordings but one of my friends deleted most of them.

Imagine if every time you talked quietly in your place of work, your boss made you walk past all of your coworkers to show you made a mistake- with a system in place that then displays the fact that you made a mistake for the rest of the day. Whats wild to me is that there are so many alternatives to this, such as placing a warning card on your desk instead of having it displayed publicly on a wall, but the card flipping system is still so commonly used.
