If you consider this franchise from Charlie's perspective, it becomes downright horrifying. His daughter gets married, barely out of high school, at 18, to her boyfriend, the same person who caused her to be depressed for months on end after he abandoned her for her protection. Then, he hears that she was hospitalised on her honeymoon, and next time he sees her, her eyes have changed colour, and she's obviously not the same person. Add to Jacob revealing his Werewolf form to him, and growing older while Bella lives forever, always looking like a teenager, and you have yourself a psychological horror.

And the Cullens think it's funny that Bella is beating on Jacob for imprinting on her child? What if she killed him then Bella & the Cullens would've been exterminated by Jacob's pack Bella's choices would've destroyed an entire family. Jacob's dad Billy would've been devastated so would Charley because both fathers have lost their children on Bella's account of wanting to be a vampire so she can tell everyone that was in her human life to kiss her ass. And speaking of toxic relationship look at her & Edward their relationship isn't love Bella loves Edward for what he is, what he can give her & Edward is nothing but a control freak.

My dad had a friend who saw me as a newborn and told my dad, in that moment, "She is going to be my wife". Years later, I am married to someone my age, and that friend hasn't been allowed in my parents lives since he left that day he said that to my dad. It's creepy, that's a fact.
Edit: I didn't expect so many likes lol. For those who are curious, this "friend" had a lot of mental issues and claimed I was going to marry him with the utmost seriousness, and it absolutely freaked my dad out. When he retold this story to me, after I was grown and married for a few years, he still was super creeped out by it. It made him super protective, and he taught me about keeping creeps out of my life which was useful, as this "friend" was the first of at least seven people who would creep on me, most of them appearing in my late teens/young adult years, and one as recently as a month ago.

Because all of this is what she LIKES. She didn't character assassinate Jacob intentionally, she was trying to HELP. According to Stephanie Meyer, she was taking pity on the people who for some reason preferred Jacob to Edward. Someone that, to her eyes, had literally nothing going for him while Edward had everything. So everything prior to this was her trying to make him more appealing as an acknowledgement of her fans, and this was her attempting to give the shippers a consolation prize. I used to be obsessed with the books in my late teens/early twenties. At that time, I was in an abusive/toxic relationship with a man who in hindsight turned out to be a narcissist and maybe even a sociopath. I know there are narcissists and sociopaths out there who are self-aware and try their best to behave morally, but he did not. He brainwashed, manipulated, and gaslit me. He took my agency away and made me believe that no one in the world loved me as much as he did (not even my family and I have very loving parents and sisters) and that without him there would be no love in my life. All my other relationships suffered while I was with him.
I basically became the person he wanted me to be, depending on him for everything. My family and friends absolutely hated him and he made me dislike my friends and family, because "no one understands how much he loved me and how misunderstood he is" blegh.
He was the main character in my life.
I related so much to Bella and always thought how accurately Twilight portrayed "real love" in the movies as well. And even Bella's night terrors didn't seem over the top to me at the time because I had similar break downs (while awake). I was overly emotional and my life was super dramatic (I didn't realize that he was the one making it that way).
Fast forward to now. Man, I was really brainwashed to believe that this is what love looks like. I never understood why people made fun of Twilight because to me it portrayed parts of my relationship so accurately. I thought this was love. Man was I wrong. Thank you Jonathan and Alan for opening my eyes to the toxic relationships in Twilight. This is not romantic, this is freaking garbage!

So much of that is tied in with the mormon culture Meyers grew up in. Reducing women to wives and mothers means the only things girls are left to dream about are getting married and having babies, and they expect their husband to make all the decisions in the marriage, so the only control they get over anything in their lives is the tradition that the moms pick the kids' names. So, a lot of young girls who've been raised like that have a *lot* of strong feelings about their planned baby names, and it regularly causes drama (oh no, they "stole" my name!), etc etc. So yeah. Bella's reaction to her stupid baby name (Renesmee is just... oh honey, no) being replaced with a nickname is almost definitely something Meyers considers normal.

They absolutely are, but it would be completely human to say horrible shit that you don’t really mean like “If the unborn fetus inside you kills you, I’ll kill it” when the currently living person you loved was unilaterally deciding to endanger their life by carrying it.

I'll point out one of the redeeming qualities of Twilight, which I think isn't talked about enough. It's one of the (very) few pieces of media with a female werewolf.
Leah is such a great character, and the books go into a lot more detail about her feelings of alienation in this male-dominated pack of dudebro werewolves, the leader of which is her ex (Sam) who imprinted on someone else. Leah is the white wolf in the movies, and she's constantly being rejected by her younger brother (Ceth) who looks up to Sam and Jacob et al. She's also generally rejected by her pack, and that's a constant nightmare because they're all telepathically connected when in wolf form.
When Bella hits Ceth during the "Nessie" confrontation, Leah is the one snuggling up to Ceth, making sure he's okay. In the flash-forward fight scene, Ceth is the orange werewolf who's killed and Leah starts howling. I love her in the books and wish they had shown her more in the movies.
In fact, I wish all the supporting characters in this series had their own stories fleshed out instead of the silly love/hate triangle. Who doesn't want to read about a psychic who ends up in a mental institution in the 1800s before becoming a vampire, or a vampire doctor whose empathy just won't let him kill humans for food, or the naive romantic who goes after her rapists when she gets her vampire powers? Instead, we get this toxic trio who wouldn't know maturity if it bit them on the nose. What a shame Meyer made these choices!

Instead smeyer straight up accidentally wrote a character who’s far more sympathetic and interesting than Bella could ever be.

The thing that drives me the most crazy about Edward's accountability moment is that it doesn't come until AFTER Bella is turned into a vampire, because I've always read his underestimating her as "oh she's a dumb weak human, of course she can't do anything for herself" and that's something he does even when the challenge in question isn't one of physical strength or resilience (where the fact that she's a squishy human would be a legitimate issue). There SHOULD have been a moment where he saw human-Bella as being fully his equal and worthy of his respect. But there wasn't - she didn't become his equal until she became a vampire. And that's gross.

He only acknowledges this and respects her as an equal because of the big change in power dynamics. Bella is a vampire that can kick his ass now, she's no longer a "fragile" inferior human. He can't use her humanity as an exuse to manipulate/gaslight her anymore, so he starts kissing up.

If you can't level with your hearts and minds, leave the body/flesh out of the equation. ESPECIALLY since he couldn't fully enjoy it (and told her that). I wouldn't want my partner to fake it or not enjoy it. WTF message is that? "We are married now, so his (or her) body is mine." 😑😠 and now you also get to feel guilty about the bruises.🙄

It's like they're Charlie, Bella is Jacob, Edward is Bella, and rather than blatant sexual assault it's simply disrespect for consent. I'd rather they just focus on Edward's fixation on telling Bella that he knows SHE doesn't want sex, agreed he should not tell her what she wants. But instead they focus more on he's not giving her what she wants and THAT'S wrong, which I wholeheartedly disagree with.

Really just, fainted on spot and almost fell off the bed we were sitting on. It happened again with other movies. When I confess that I fainted watching Twilight, people are confused. But this scene? It's so much worse than any horror movie because it wasn't supposed to be. It was supposed to be a cheesy bad romance, not this. And 12 years later, I'm so relieved to hear that I'm not weird, that this scene actually is horrible.

and I still am scared now.

Coming from a woman who's given birth twice, childbirth can be scary, especially if you don't know what's happening fully. Outside of the whole discussion of raising said children and just focusing on the birthing, do your research, talk to medical professionals, and just be aware that there will be pain. It's been years since and though I don't remember everything, there have been things that have stuck in my memory. I definitely wish I was calmer during my first labor, but I can forgive myself since it was my first.

When my mum was pregnant with my brother, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of melanosarcoma (skin cancer) that had already spread to her lymph nodes. I was only 6 at the time, so I don't remember a huge amount of what was going on, but I remember it being a sad and scary time. Props to my Mum and Dad, there was never any argument or disagreement between them - they chose to face and fight the battle together. In the end, they chose to continue the pregnancy - she had surgery to remove the primary tumour and all the local lymph nodes, and then had my brother, and then started treatment afterwards. 37 years later I still have my baby brother AND my mum and dad, so it was the right call :)

A little story of my experience watching that birth scene they mention at 12:40 when I was a teen:
I was in high school and went to see it in theaters with my sisters. That scene came on, and just as Alan and Johnathan described, the sound design was traumatic. I started to feel sick and told my sisters I was going to run to the washroom real quick. I scurry between the seats and out the doors of the theater, making my way down the hall to the bathroom. Suddenly I feel lightheaded and my vision tunneling. I saw a woman coming towards me, so I look at her and go "excuse me. I think im gonna--" and BONK. I FAINT. Right in the middle of the hallway to the bathroom. I wake up seconds later with a crowd around me asking if I was okay.
God I was so embarrassed and could not handle any bloody scenes from any movie after that for years.

As someone with anger issues, I think the scene at 6:22 is a pretty decent example of anger management from Bella. She's aware that she's getting really angry and can communicate "get my daughter out of the room, and my husband shouldn't be touching me right now." And once she's sure no one else is going to be harmed, she goes off on Jacob.
Also, the scene where she goes off on Jacob is probably my favorite one in the series xD (minus any scene with Michael Sheen in it, of course)

I think Jacob imprinting on Renesmee would have been more palatable if their relationship had STAYED a niece/uncle relationship or brother/sister relationship instead of developing later on as a romantic relationship. It would make more sense for him to just be protective of her, rather than him destined to be her future lover. I also would have liked to see the other aspects of imprinting that Jacob mentioned, like being a protector, brother or friend, in other pairings to further cement the “being what she needs” instead of “being what she needs until she falls in love with me”. I also would have liked to see some same sex imprinting, both romantic and platonic, but unfortunately, considering the fact that Meyers in Mormon, the only time you would get that is in fanfiction.
I like the idea of soulmates not always having to be romantic or hetero, because irl it’s not like that.

The whole "I don't want this baby who killed you" IS a real-life thing and it's pretty horrifying.
My best friend from childhood works in a maternity hospital, and once she had this horrible story of a perfectly healthy mom who went into labour and it started to go bad after she delivered the baby. She went into reanimation, then sceptic shock. All the while during his wife's agony, the husband was telling my friend how much he loved his wife, how he could not live without her, and how SHE wanted the child and he kinda got along with it because he loved her so much and she was going to die and he would be left alone with this baby he did not want that much. After like 23 hours, she passed away.
My friend and the hospital crew had to do checkups on the dad after this horrible day.
They did not do these only out of concern for poor bloke's mental health but for the baby, they were genuinely scared that he might hurt her or abandon her - even making plan for a possible adoption. Hopefully, the dad had a great support system and he grew to love his and his late wife's daughter.
Upon hearing the story, my boyfriend and I went "nope, we're never having a baby".

The reason Edward relaxed when they married was because she was committed to him. Then he was ultimately "accountable" when she turned into a vampire because she was final form and there was no way for her to ever leave him at that point. As soon as toxic people realize they've trapped the people they want to control with them, then they relax because that person no longer has options OTHER than them.

Within the books' lore, those who are changed have an almost psychic bond with the one who changed them and somehow can't leave or be without them. It's inconsistent what the relationship is, but it's shown to be incredibly difficult to leave them. It is a "trapping" situation, regardless of how sinister or innocent the act is.
Carlisle changed Edward at his mother's request, Rosalie at Edward's request, Emmett at Rosalie's request, and Esme as his match. Alice had no memory of who changed her so it's almost like she's an orphan. Jasper, I think, was the only one who managed to leave those who changed him, and that might have only been because he had more control over himself and because his change was as a war asset.

The problem I have with this moral metaphor is that it takes the entirely irrational cult around the "pure helpless virgin that needs to be protected" and represents it by something that gives it some serious legitimacy that it doesn't deserve. The vampires have the religious believe that they are cursed and their souls are doomed to hell (which somewhat corresponds with the asinine conservative religious trope of being "tainted" and becoming sinful by sex, with almost no regards to the circumstances), but the vampires are bloodthirsty monsters with an urge to kill and are blatantly supernatural, so their believe that they are cursed and that humans should not be turned into them (least of all humans they like) makes a whole lot more sense than protecting virginity. Also, all of them are multiple times stronger, more durable and more experienced, living this undead existence for many decades if not centuries and she is a clueless teenager who didn't even know vampires existed until she met them, so them treating her like a clueless child who can't make her own decisions regarding issues that connect to the vampire world and who certainly can't protect herself is also a whole lot more legitimate than the real world issue it is supposed to symbolize. Especially because Bella almost constantly confirms it by making the most immature and dangerous decisions possible.

@@paulnicholson5997 That certainly is a red flag, but it's not what made me realize the relationship wasn't healthy -- it was that Edward knew his very presence put Bella in grave danger and yet gives in to his own desire to be with her anyway, and that he agreed to turn her into a vampire even though he was genuinely convinced that becoming a vampire destroys your soul.

@@Lucky10279 yeah he did do that, your right. I also remember he did try to convince her not to be a vampire pretty strenuously though, and even bailed on her hoping she would give it up( which shows a serious lack of understanding when it comes to a love obsessed teenage girl) considering how long he's been alive. So my wife read all the books and said there was much more nuance, like you would expect in a book vs. Movie scenario. But one of the things that continued to piss me off was the " have your cake and eat it too" way Bella treated both Edward and especially Jacob, man she used poor Jacob for a doormat and he was simping for her way to hard.

I was the same way, but to be fair, it is a very interesting phenomenon: Meyer took a fandom that had just come out off Rowling's work and was juuuuust the right age to really buy into the whole late teen angst fantasy romance thing the books were attempting to convey, while living in a time where people didn't really talk about healthy vs toxic behavior in relationships and a lot of rom coms from the same era would never fly nowadays.

I never thought I’d complement a twilight film for anything but as an animator, those wolves are genuinely so well done. They’re actually so entertaining to watch, the subtle acting when the wolf gets up after being slammed into the tree and the other one comes over to help is just unexpectedly good? It’s like a really strong mix of human emotion on top of recognisable canine behaviour.

Just to be “that guy”, you guys really SHOULD cover how problematic 50 Shades is. I don’t enjoy seeing the two of you in pain, but I’ve had an AMAZING time listening to the two of you tear Twilight apart from start to finish. As a human who wasted hours of her life that she can never get back to prove a point, it feels like everything has come full circle.
It all started when one roommate said the book series was awesome and another roommate cried about life wasted, I was thrust into the tiebreaker roll and by the GODS did I tear down the books after finishing. After that I was tricked by various other friends into going to see literally ALL of the movies and risked life and limb to do “in-theatre” what you guys did here on RUclips and it was WORTH EVERY MINUTE to see the utter hate in the faces of those around me as I cracked joke after joke.
It’s the theme of this channel to teach from film and should ABSOLUTELY include problematic films from time to time. Thank you guys for covering this utterly terrible series. While the movies are 100% un-re-watchable (as if that were an actual word), these episodes are hilarious and will be rewatched many many times.

Every time I stopped reading I would think to myself "that can't be it, there must be a real plot somewhere in this story" when I reached the end where he hit her and she ran home and was crying on her bed, I felt just so angry. I was in an abusive relationship in my early 20s. I also read twilight when I was a teen and idolized Edward and Bellas relationship. To be perfectly honest I blame it, in part, for the unrealistic and dangerous ideals I had on love. My ex abused me but I often told myself that the obsessive controlling behavior was just him loving me so much. I convinced myself that him taking my phone away from me and deleting messages from my friends was because he loved me and wanted to protect me. I convinced myself that when he hurt me it was okay because he loved me and was doing it to better me and protect me from myself. It took me years to realize the truth. So while I find the thought of banning books abhorrent I think books like this need to come with disclaimers. So people can see red flags for what they are and not romanticize them.

Woah... I am so sadden to hear what you went through. Yes, I always thought these books need to have a disclaimer of some sort. Young audience sometimes don't understand.
I read the first book of twilight when I was in middle school and admittedly, I did like it. But I never based my relationship on Edward and Bella's relationship. I think I always knew it wasn't realistic.
I made it out fine. But others may not. And that's what scares me. Everyone really deserves to know that these books are not romantically healthy in reality.

What he doesn't know is that Aro killed her because Marcus was going to leave the Volturi with her and he saw Marcus's power he has one apparently as more valuable than hers so he killed her to keep Marcus but then Marcus has been depressed they've been using the powers of another voltarian member who can create and Destroy bonds to keep him bound to the Volturi so he won't try to die.

Same take as in the movie In Time. Not teenage suicidal thoughts which indicate the person should seek help to live a healthy lifespan and quality of life.

I was 16 and I remember having the cohesive thought while watching it "Okay, this is a different direction an- oh shit people are actually dying? Okay okay let's see where this goes, this is great! What can they do with this?" and then it was revealed to be a vision and someone in the theater shouted out "SHUT THE FRUNT DOOR!" and I couldn't have agreed with an outburst more. I was slightly disappointed that it wasn't real.
