I think they did it this way because he surpassed a record held by a now retired player (Peyton Manning). Now any other record Brees or Brady holds will most likely be temporary for the foreseeable future.

I was at this game. Highlights of the game -- the fact that Drew broke this record, of course. And then the raucous chant of "Refs you suck!" that erupted after the touchdown that was supposed to be Drew's record breaking one was called back by some asinine penalty. Before the half, too. But overall a great one to be at.
