Great video. A tip for cottons that need ironing is to pack a small (tiny) spray bottle. When you get to your destination, hang your clothes in the bathroom and give them a good spritz. They won't look perfectly ironed but if the cotton or linen is light, you won't have obvious creases. Also I found that I can take water on flights by using a couple of 50 ml plastic containers that you'll find a dollar store. It's enough water to see you through until you can get water on the aircraft. I usually pack a hard plastic (yes, I know, plastic, but it's light) glass to put my water in. All flights I've been on give you water in soft receptacles that mean you have to drink all the water at once. The sturdy 'glass' sits in the seat pocket and doesn't spill.

Love the Minkeeblue bag, so we'll organized! You really know how to pack and offer great tips, Laurie. Also like the new national parks packing cubes. I always have a fear, well not a fear maybe anxiety, because each airline seems different according to their guidelines and sometimes it's confusing to me (chemo brain doesn't help, lol). You are certainly a travel pro and offer us the best ideas and tips. 🛩 Heartfelt condolences on the passing of your Dad. ⚘⚘

Thank you for your videos from one teacher to another! I traveled this year for the first time in years and I felt so prepared having seen several of your tips and videos. I’d love more updated videos on everything especially shoes. I love your clothing tips and updated videos on bags, purses. In general what I appreciate the most is that you always consider mobility and weight of items (shoes) so that we won’t be exhausted by the end of the day when using items like side purses all day long etc. 🙏🏽👍🏼don’t stop. I’m watching this at 5:30 in the morning because it’s like hearing from a friend and I couldn’t wait to catch-up. I recently started buying quite a few clothing outfits from Amazon because I appreciate the photos that people post to see what the item looks like on normal people. Same with your video - I like that you are willing to say “I don’t love it yet” or “it’s too heavy” along with your recommendations.

Love the peanut butter lid hack!! Great idea, thanks! Glad I'm not the only one who is obsessed with bag hardware! I'm hard on shoulder/crossbody bags for some reason and hate flimsy clips and things. I don't understand why so many manufacturers put straps that are sewn to the bag on one end while the other end hooks. I want the ability to replace the strap if needed. Snaps that don't stay snapped make me crazy so I like magnets and especially zippers on pockets. I have way too many bags that just didn't work for me. 🤣

    My Amazon travel essentials:
Love my little Anker PowerCore 10000 (I have the blue one) - has done me so much justice and charges my phone 6 times (one reason I _love_ having a flip phone - battery lasts *_forever_* and charges super fast), my kindle 3 times, or my mp3 player I'm not sure how many times (haven't tested it yet, probably 3-5 times though). While I make sure all of my devices are fully charged before I head to the airport, my kindle somehow ran out of charge the last time I flew (probably because I had 3 flights instead of my usual 2, so it had an extra 2-3 hours of use over what it normally had - considering that it's a Keyboard 3 (made in 2010, I got it "open box" brand new 2 years ago - the only 3G Keyboard 3 I could find anywhere that actually worked), the battery is actually pretty decent still, and when the battery does get to the point of needing to be replaced, I already know where I can get another one), so I just pulled out my little powerbank and knew that I didn't have to worry about it running out of charge. I have a couple little powerbanks from travelocity as well, but they don't last very long (half a phone charge, if even, and that's saying something, considering it's a flip phone), so I don't usually take them traveling. My phone, kindle, mp3 player, wireless earbuds, and another recording device all use a microUSB to USB cord (same one the powerbank uses), so I only ever have to take one cord when traveling.
My current flying toiletry bag is from the Bagail brand - mine came as a set of 3 (I've only ever used one because I got them while on my last flying trip); as for whether things fit better when horizontal vs. vertical, it depends on what shape the bag is (whether it opens on the long side or short side) and what you're bringing. I do like that TSA is fine with it even though it's a little bit bigger than a quart, because it means I can pack more of my "liquid" snacks - hummus, applesauce, etc.
I got my packing cubes on Amazon as well - they're the eBags medium, small, medium slim, small slim set (don't know whether that set is still available anywhere or not). Picked that set because, out of all the sets I was considering, it was the one that would fit my suitcase dimensions the best (yes, I measured the interior of my suitcase to figure it out, since mine is smaller than standard carry-on size) - I can fit 4 eBags medium cubes in my suitcase. Speaking of, what I ended up using the space for that was freed up by not having to tote my little water purifier in my suitcase was stuffing my packing cubes to absolute capacity as well as putting my sneakers in (granted, that was a road trip, not flying, and I had to bring more clothes than I normally would because we weren't going to be able to do laundry as often as we normally do); can't wait to see what I use that space for the next time I actually fly (and now that United has *_FINALLY_* seen sense to drop their pointless mask rule, that will actually be an option for me again).
Something else I always take on flights are my noise cancelling headphones, because the engine and brakes are too loud for me (and my kindle volume doesn't go super high, definitely not high enough to be easily heard over the engines while in the air) - I have the Howard Leight Impact Sport, and while they're great at noise cancelling, the way they work makes it hard to listen to audio with them while still drowning out the engine roar (currently trying to find cordless earbuds to wear under them so I don't have to worry about the cord getting jostled when I put them on and take them off; it's complicated by the fact that my ears are rather small and my ear canals are tiny, so most wings and over-ear hooks, and even nearly all the little pillow things (can't remember what they're called) that go in the ears, are way too big for me); however, the sound amplification feature really came in handy when I was running sound backstage at our last play - I could easily hear everything that was said onstage, despite zero microphones, me facing the opposite direction of the actors (so even harder to hear), and the 60+ mph wind gusts whipping through (oh, did I mention we did it outside?). They fold down really small, and I have the case for them (bought it separately), which fits in my backpack quite nicely, and has room inside it for a short aux cord (which I used with them in the actual airport, since I didn't have to drown out engine noise there). I also got the better ear pads (the gel ones by Zohan), since being able to wear them over my glasses was super important (I had a pair of noise cancelling headphones before, but they were so insanely tight I couldn't wear them over my glasses without it triggering a migraine); extra perk is that the actual ear cups are pretty flat, so I can even lie down on my side without it forcing my head up at a weird angle. Still trying to determine whether I'm going to eventually get a better set (ones where I can actually listen to audio at full volume while still reaping the full benefits of the noise cancellation), but I haven't found any yet that are highly rated and are still within my price range (I like how V Moda fold down small - that's an absolutely non-negotiable feature - but I can't afford them).

Cute slippers. I like to pack Fit Kicks. They take up virtually no space, work for indoors and outdoors, don't mind water and can even be used for beach shoes. You can use them on the beach, wash them off in the hotel sink, hang them on a pants hanger to dry, and they'll be dry by the time you get back from dinner.

I have a tip for you, you might be interested in and that is take an extra pair of no-show socks and put them over your socks while going through TSA then you can either throw them away or put in ziplock bag to wash later.
You can buy them at the Dollar Tree so if you choose to throw them away they were only a dollar twenty-five here now where I live. Just an idea I thought I would share with you because I love your videos.

Helpful hint for those with walking or other mobility issues.
Very important - as I have mobility issues, must walk with a cane, I request a wheelchair when I get my ticket. On my last trip to California I took shuttle from Duluth MN to MSP. Got a wheelchair escort from the curb and it was a long journey to my gate. MSP is a big airport. Gave the attendant $10, best tip ever. Staff at gates are always very helpful. This service is at any airport, you just have to ask. They will also take you down the boarding ramp or meet you with a wheelchair when the plane lands. Tipping is optional but considering the service I believe it shows how grateful you are & I always tip.

For jewelry in hotel room I use a water glass but like the peanut butter lid idea!
For my cosmetics to put on bathroom counter I picked up a collapsible cloth holder. Base has a covered cardboard and it folds flat. Opens to a rectangular I have a larger one for things I like for room snacks. Good for small paper plates, disposable forks etc, can put condiments in small paper cups in it. Keeps everything organized and not all over the room desk.

I do a backpack, a carry on for personal items and a hard-sided carry on. I have added a tiny (and I mean tiny) crossbody bag that just holds my cardholder and phone and wear this through security. Once I'm waiting in boarding & done buying any last minute coffee, etc. on the walk to the gate, I tuck this in to my personal item bag. I absolutely LOVE my hard sided carry on (major overpacker and this keeps me from the embarrassment of having my soft sided luggage no longer fit in the overhead) but as you said, the no pockets thing is a drag, and having to root through my backpack or tote, even though it's a picture of organization w/ all its pouches never worked well for me. I always seemed to panic or just be annoyed at zipping/unzipping things to get the ID & phone to scan boarding pass, and the little crossbody has worked well for this purpose. Plus it's a great second bag on the trip when you don't need much.

Lots of info. Unfortunately not all the items are available in Canada. I agree the hard shell suitcase definitely needs a pocket. I’m finally heading back to Scotland next week for 25 days to see family and travel around. I love the compression cubes, definitely the way to go. We have first row seats which I normally never book, as I am 5 ft tall, but I just could not deal with someone in front of me this trip. If you are in a front seat, no seat in front to store your bag. Pack a smaller cube with your ‘during flight’ essentials. I-Pad, wipes, Kleenex, earphone’s, snacks, flight slippers, etc. Then you can place it beside you in your seat or put it back in the overhead and they will be easier to find.

    • @SnowySpiritRuby

I don't know how many airlines have this (I know Denver Air does, not sure about others), but the last time I flew bulkhead, I put my in-flight essentials in a small drawstring bag and tucked it under my seat - there was enough room underneath my seat at the very front of it for me to tuck the bag without it being in the way of the bag of the person sitting behind me (there was a bar separating the place I put my bag from where the other person's bag was). I can empathize with sitting in bulkhead when you're only 5' tall, though - I think I stuck my feet straight out in front of me and rested them on the wall for most of the flight.

Hi Laurie, I mostly do road trips for 4-6 days and usually take my carry on or medium sized suitcase. I am having a hard time deciding which size of Tripped Packing cubes to take, the carry on size or the extra large size (the set with the Eiffel Tower on the tube cube). Does the extra large set work well in a medium suitcase or better for the largest one that comes in the 3 piece set? Is the tube cube ok for a were bathing suit or is there another item that you would recommend for bringing a wet bathing suit back home? Also, I am not sure which folding hangars you recommended or if perhaps I saw that on someone else's channel. Thanks!

I have used so many of your tips on our recent trip to Greece!! One thing I took this time was a small insulated cooler bag ($2 at our local supermarket), not only did it hold my medicine (it was on its own insulated pouch but it was very hot), we purchased some cheese, fruit and other refrigerated snacks to eat along the way while we were driving around the country, it worked great and takes no space. About the airpods, in my experience when for some reason they fall off (turbulence, slippery fingers...) there is no space to maneuver and bend down to look for them in economy class, so I purchased a cord with magnets, they attach to the airpods and prevent this.Thank you for all the tips, hacks and recommendations!!

Thank you so much for sharing your travel tips! They are extremely helpful for my next international long trip. I bought a few of your recommendations, except for the Minkeeblue tote bag. I do like the bag, but I don't usually travel with a carry-on where it can sit. I like to check-in, instead of being always worried if there will be room in overhead compartment bins when on-boarding. I just bought a London fog underseat bag. It is small but mighty - has many pockets and easy opening from front. I can also put it on top of larger suitcase before check-in the larger one. I will use it as the tote bag :)

Hello Laurie I am Barbara Quinton. I love your videos I am so glad I found you. I am having back surgery in September ugh. I am not looking forward to it but it is just a have to do. I have done my fair share of cruising and traveling Europe. When I was younger, I am 74, I was a travel agent for many years but everything has changed so much. Here is my question. We were upgraded the last time we travelled on American business class. Since i will be recuperating from my surgery when we fly in November for a River Cruise for the Christmas Markets. The last time I travelled was for the Christmas Markets in 3 different cities and it was beautiful and the crowds made it so much fun. I am wondering if you have any tips for getting an upgrade over the water I loved the part where you can lay down flat. I didn't do anything last time they just gave it to us. I can set up and sleep if we don't get it but I was thinking how much easier it would be to lay down. The cruise lines offer air and I am not sure if we can book the upgrade with them or not. Do you have any suggestions? I have flown many times standby and swore last time it wasn't worth it to me. Keep up the good work your information is great and I have learned a few things myself Barbara

So very glad I found your site. You seem very knowledgeable. My husband and I are going on our first overseas travel this coming Nov.. I am so nervous about regulations , with packing carryon's , what is allowed to take with us. Weight restrictions size restrictions on luggage, can we take food with us? Also sitting on a plane for 12 hours , we are older, how do you keep from becoming totally stiff. I have trouble with my ears when landing, sometimes it lasts a week. Any suggestions.
It is a combo of hotel and cruise ship travel. Lots of sight seeing. I'm going to watch your more current videos to see what you have to say. Wondering if you had any advice on which ones would be the most helpful. Also if you plan on doing a talk on traveling to Europe and what to take anytime soon. Do you have to have all four of the Covid shots and boosters or only the three? We never got the latest one.

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie
      @TravelTipsbyLaurie  2 года назад

Hi and so exciting Teresa! For shots you will have to check the country you are visiting. I do not know all of the rules. 12 hour rides are difficult. I highly recommend Dr. Scholls compression socks if you can wear them. Make yourself get up and go to the bathroom every 2 hours. You can take food but I would not pack produce for another country. And coming back you cannot bring cheese fyi. Have a lovely time. Maybe your doctor has a nasal drop or some medicine for ears afterwards. My mom is the same way.

Hey Laurie, my husband and I are traveling to London in September, 2024 for a three week vacation. I have to have a Cpap and my husband has an oxygen concentrator. What is the best way to proceed with these, and will they count as extra carry on. Both my husband and I will have two carry ons and want to know if the Cpap will count as a personal carry-on? I have been looking at so many travel videos, it is becoming overwhelming. Your videos seem to be more straightforward. This is our first time traveling international. Any tips you can give us will be appreciated. Thank you, Dr. Lissa

    • @TravelTipsbyLaurie

I just came back from a trip to Argentina and need to tell you that I’ve never appreciated an item as much as I did the valet tray you recommended here. I would’ve never thought of purchasing this but figured I could use it. Well, we traveled to a few more “rustic” places like Iguazú Falls and Cafayate and none of the hotels had nightstands so my glasses, earrings and phone laid on this little thing on the floor. This was sooo useful I already ordered a few more as gifts to my traveling friends.

I prefer shorter cables. As short as possible and some longer. And multiples. I can not make due with one cable. No way. I also need a multi USB charger. The Anker PowerCore III Sense 10k is not heavy. It does PD and trickle charging. Only two outputs and only USB C input, though. Worth being aware of.
