After some trips where I wished I'd bought different things, I now put together my travel capsule wardrobe about 3 weeks before a trip, then spend the next week wearing only those items and nothing else. That gives me time to launder those items before I pack, and also to make changes if the items don't work. For example, there is a sleeveless blouse in a fancy fabric with ruffles at the sleeves and neck that I thought would be perfect for travel - it looks dressy but is in a carefree fabric that you cannot make wrinkle no matter what you do to it. After wearing it for a day, I realized I found the ruffles at the neck really irritating and I was not comfortable in it. Also, regardless of the time of year, bring tanks/shells!! Whatever the temperature outside, you may find it uncomfortably hot indoors. Particularly if you are visiting someone who lives in seniors' housing.

I have come to enjoy your videos and the comments as well, thank you Laurie! I spent 6 weeks in Italy, with a small dog (!) carry-on only. I think a large part of carry-on is your attitude, there is no shame in wearing the same thing more than once. If you plan carefully, and I purchased good quality clothes with good fabrics, you can mix and match so that you don't wear the same outfit twice. One mistake I made on another trip was to bring a skirt that I wore only once. (Not big on skirts). But I did have a simple knit dress that I wore to the opera, and another time put a casual top with a belt over it and it looked like separates.

Hi Laurie, i just want to let you know that you have greatly influenced how I pack for the last 3 years, whether domestically ( beautiful Canada) or internationally, including extended trips to Ireland and the UK. You have helped me pack in a 30 litre or 40 litre backpack only by incorporating most of your tips. Thanks so much!

SANDAL HACK: There is a company called Solely Jane. This company specializes in packable and interchangeable sandals. You can buy a base and then the different tops slide in and out of a channel in the base. This way when you pack you have the base and you take the sandal tops off and pack them flat. The shoes take up much less space. Currently the company only has sandals with a heel that are either casual or fancier. The company told me that they will be adding flat sandals in about August. This way you could pack one bottom sandal base and 2-3 tops for the sandals and hardly use any room in your carry-on! 👡

They’re wider in front, with a very narrow heel, an extremely high instep and now a frickin bunion on one foot. 😒 I hope that helps and if you decide to try them, they’re not overly expensive and they also have a fair return policy.

Fellow cold ear sufferer here. It took 69 years (am now 72) for me to learn why my ears get so cold. The wind or breeze goes in the ear canal. My lymph glands then swell up. I rode my bike to and from school every day as a kid. In hot Southern California. My ears recovered much faster in the heat than they did in the winter. NEVER OWNED A HAT. Until I moved east in 1979. But I continued having ear issues. I stopped bike riding. A few years ago I started walking with earbuds. No ear problems. So now I have a set of yellow ear plugs connected with a blue cord in my purse at all times. I rarely wear a hat anymore.

Laurie, your recommendations are always spot on, especially about the weather! I think this is one of your best videos!
I learned by experience to use the recommendations you mention for travel with just carryons. Most of my travel is to the eastern US from Canada (to visit family) yet it’s amazing how much the weather can change within a couple of hours flight, and more depending on the time of year.
My friends can’t believe that I can pack in a carryon and one personal item for 2-3+ weeks, including for some dressy occasions.
Packing cubes have been an absolute game changer for me - tops and sweaters in one, skirts and leggings in another, underwear & tights in another. Shoes can be difficult but I wear sneakers or short boots (the heaviest item) for travel and limit myself to two other pairs (in case one gets wet). I have a crushable raincoat that I can shove in the carryon or wear, depending on the weather on travel day. If it’s the winter I wear my medium winter crushable coat (no one needs a Canadian type winter coat south of Montreal) and a jersey hoody over a sweater to free up space in my bag. Choose a couple of sweaters that match everything and one of which can be dressed up if needed.
I wear a lot of black so that helps with mixing and matching. And even with these restrictions I invariably have something that I didn’t wear!
Be ruthless with pharmaceuticals/makeup as there are minis available - but really decide how much you actually need or can buy when you arrive. Unless it’s a trek to the back of beyond there is usually somewhere you can get basics.
And remember that you can wash things - try to travel with clothes, especially underwear, that can be washed overnight and take a small plastic skirt hanger for drying and a small container of detergent.
Learning what works for you can actually be fun!

To take a casual day outfit to a decent restaurant/theatre outfit for the evening, without going back to your hotel or weighing yourself down, simply fold a large silk scarf and a brooch/pretty scarf ring into your bag. There are thousands of videos on youtube showing different ways to turn a large silk scarf into a shawl or kimono top that will fancy up even the most casual shirt.

If I’m traveling anywhere other than a tropical place, I take only black bottom pieces and black shoes. Every shirt possibility works with that. On our trip to Norway last month, I did all that in merino wool, plus a charcoal gray wool dress. I was also able to pack a water resistant jacket, gloves, and hat. Even in a European-sized carry-on with a weight limit, I was well under. Our next trip is to the Caribbean, so I’ll have only off-white/khaki bottom pieces and shoes. Again, anything will go with that. Plus a couple of colorful sundresses. I think I’ll easily fit it all in a carry on.

Again, thank you for another great informative video! With my upcoming trip to Istanbul in November, I definitely appreciated this video because by November, the temperatures there are expected to be down in the 50's and 60's and of course there is supposed to be a lot of rain. I bought the raincoat from Amazon that you recommended. Gotta say I love it! Still trying to decide if I will buy an umbrella to take with me or just buy one when I get there.🤔 And I am actually considering buying a pair of the waterproof hiking pants that you recommended. Obviously I am not going hiking in Istanbul, despite it's name being the City of Seven Hills. 😂 It's just I have been to Istanbul before in November and was thinking the waterproof pants would be great on days when there are heavy downpours. Even if it's pouring rain, I still go out to tour the city. I am going to experiment and do a practice run packing a carry-on with just enough clothes and toiletries that I think I will need for 15 days. I am so bad about over packing with "I might need this" items that I am determined not to over pack this trip. Plus, with Turkish Airlines new restrictions on the size and weight of your carry-on, I will have to downsize from my old carry-on bag. Keeping fingers crossed that I don't end up having to take a check-in bag. I don't know how you do International trips with just a carry-on! You are my hero! 👍

Looks like you have been visiting my neck of the woods (or are about to) ! Banff visiting (I am just down the road): You need to be prepared for rain, cool/cold at night, and right now, super-hot in the day. If you are not hiking trails, then not hiking boots but sturdy walking shoes. The restaurants are really casual--almost to a fault! So as long as you look presentable you are fine most places. I like to dress up to go out, but most places you don't have to. The main thing is to be dressed to enjoy all of the mountain scenery and simple un-paved walking trails.

We are going in Dec to Germany and am torn on the best attire to wear and be comfortable on a long haul flight while being warm once we land. I know that we can change clothes in the bathroom after we land, but I don't normally do that now and don't see this as something we will do since we will be meeting up with a tour group and am not sure how much time we'll have after landing.

Not to be rude but you can’t go by what it was when she was there. I’ve been when it’s freezing, gloves, hats, scarves winter coat and times when a basic jacket works. It also depends greatly on exactly when and where you are going. Plan on layers , bring gloves and waterproof jacket that’s light weight and warm. If earlier in season in warmer country you can bring one with zip in liner

Question for the group. I know this may sound silly, but regarding the Level8 carry on luggage, specifically the one linked; has anyone had problems fitting them in crowded overhead bins? I ask because most airlines list their carry on size as 21" x 14" x 9" and the one linked is 21.5" x 14.5" x 9.2". I know the specs are so minor, but I love the look, and the beautiful pink color, that I would hate to spend the money for it and then not be able to use it as a carry on and have to check it because it's barely outside of the 21" x 14" x 9" size. TIA for anyone with experience with this particular suitcase!

I love this idea of packing all in a carry on and have seen other videos that talk about this as well but my question is HOW do you do this with WEIGHT restrictions? I think I could narrow it down and fit it, but FinnAir says you have to have a combined weight of 17.5 lbs with BOTH personal item and carry on. How strict are they on this? I've weighed my personal item with extra shoes and bathroom items and that's 12 lbs alone. HELP! Any thoughts?

I decant cosmetics into contact lens cases and small travel bottles and tubes from Muji. Sketchers do really light footware. Wear your heavy footware and clothes, layer your clothes up and put the excess in a plastic carrier when on the plane. I have worn 2 skirts, ( or trousers and maxi skirt) with vest top, t shirt, blouse, jumper and coat, scarf hat and gloves. Wear a coat with big pockets and stuff with some of your clothes. Choose a very light bag. Yes they are strict.

So, I just discovered that Amazon sells a fake pregnant belly - intended as a costume, but it's sort of like a strap on pillow case that you're supposed to put a cushion in. It struck me, you could fill it with extra clothes (or airplane snacks!) and wear under your airplane outfit.😃

Layers - as it could be cool to warm, dry to wet. My basic is a vest top, a short sleeved T shirt, a cotton or linen shirt, a cardigan and a long sleeved T shirt, a light jacket and a rain mac. I take linen and / or cotton trousers, smarter trousers, a skirt and/ or a dress, flat sandals and white trainers. Depending on washing facilities, space and activities I add extra tops and dresses. A big thin scarf is also useful, and an umbrella. A cross body bag for essentials a light tote or foldaway bag for layers, water bottle and other items.

I plan out the itinerary first and then figure out what I will need to wear for each thing on my schedule. After that I think about what will and won’t work for those situations. It helps to create the kind of wardrobe you will need. Then I lay things out on the bed and eliminate things that I don’t really need or know I won’t wear. If you whittle it down to the basics and to a two or three color palette it helps too. I like to take pictures of my daily outfits that I plan on wearing each day. It helps to visualize everything. If it all works together then I pack. It took me a while to figure out what works for me and now packing is a breeze. It also helped me get rid of clothing items that I had that I wanted to wear but just never did. They are better off in someone else’s closet.
