I am a zipped hoodie girl. I can’t fly without one. I use the hood to cover my eyes when sleeping and to keep me warm. If I am not cold I can roll it up into the hood part and use it as a pillow. I also use it as lumbar support because plane seats cave inwards and off no support for my lower back. They also make a nice pillow to sit on if the seat is caved in to far. I think Airlines wouldn’t have so many complaints if their seats were actually comfortable. 😂
When traveling in Europe I always pack a top sheet because the beds usually only have a duvet, no top sheet, even in summer. I line my suitcase with the sheet, pack my belongings and then wrap the excess sheet around suitcase contents. This really helps with a good night's sleep.
We are leaving for Bordeaux tomorrow! We’ve never traveled international. You’ve been a God send. My poor husband I’m sure is getting tired of me say “Miss Laurie says we should…” We are both grateful for all of your travel tips. Thank you!
And for the electronics: whatever electronic you carry in your purse and carry on, put the cords for that device, INCLUDING THE NECESSARY CONVERTER/TRANSFORMER/PLUG, with the device. IF your checked bag gets lost or if you have a long layover or unexpected delay, you will need these items. Of course they make your purse a little heavier but that's ok.
Dr bronners makes a travel size. It can be used for just about anything. I wash clothes, water containers, makeup brushes, body wash. I always throw one in my liquids bag.
I am bringing dr bronners lavender in bar form, so no liquid to deal with: laundry, hair, body. I think I read u can brush ur teeth with it-only do this in a pinch cuz it does taste soapy!
Laurie, I love your tips and have travelled alone, female, for over 60 years! Please let everyone know that if you miss your flight or it gets cancelled, the airline will likely cancel all the rest of your reservations without notice to you. This just happened to me with Alaska…they had problems and cancelled my return flights, first class! with no notice. They gave me the “this is standard.” explanation, and barely found me seats to get home, but what a hassle. You need to reconfirm your flights immediately or they will sell them.
Good tip about knowing how to contact your country's embassy in any country you are in. Even if that country is close enough that you seldom even think of it as being a foreign country, really! Write the address and phone number down on a piece of paper, not only on your phone. Here's a tip: if you are mugged, as I was recently in downtown Detroit, they might get your phone as well as your wallet and ID. You need to know where to go to get replacement ID so you can cross the border to get back home! Especially if you've just had everything stolen and you find yourself in downtown Detroit with no money and no means to prove who you are!!
Laurie, you are fantastic!! I took a short trip to NY in May of this year and only took a carry-on. Your videos were so helpful. Now my husband and I are planning a trip to Italy. All these tips are so valuable!!! Thank you again. Safe Travels everyone. 🥰
When gettng money out of an ATM, specify an amount ending in 35 or 85 ( if possible ) so that you get at least one each of 5, 10, 20 euro notes. Some ATMs allow you to specify which denominations to receve, but if is usually not obvious
When I first went to Paris I bought a converter for the outlets, but was unaware of the difference between a converter and an adapter. Luckily I bought the right one and now also have adapters thanks to you explaining the difference in another video. You give great tips, thanks.
Hey Laurie, my husband got me the anti-theft bag from Travelon. I love it already. It’s so secure with all the zipper locks. It’s a bit bigger than I thought it would be but still the perfect size for walking around and site-seeing. Thank you for your tips and info, you’ve helped us so much in packing for our travel.
Great tips! I'm glad I brought my European adapter on my recent trip even though our cruise ship had plenty of American plugs. We traveled during cloudstrike, and our flights were late, cancelled, and that backup adapter came in handy.
My body bag just arrived today, love it! 👍 It will fit all I need on the plane and touring around , when I arrive to my destination. It’s not too big and yet not too small, and so well made. I will feel safe with this bag, thanks for all your great tips.🇨🇦
I keep an eye on exchange rates practically daily. When I see a good rate, I buy my foreign currency. That's usually several months in advance. It spreads out the cost of my trip that way 😊
Laurie, pilots (retired now) wife here too. We JUST got back from two weeks in Italy. A couple of things to add: on the loooong day back to Arizona from FCO, my Apple Watch and hearing aids both went dead. I should have probably taken them off on the 9hr flt when I slept to save the juice. Also, I had a pair of VERY comfortable sandals that I’ve worn all over Israel with no problems but forgot about all of the cobblestones and hills in Italy. I immediately got blisters from them and never wore them again after one use.🤷🏻♀️
@@alisong2328 So true! After getting blisters with my sandals I switched to my New Balance sneakers and wore them the rest of the trip with all of my dresses, everything!
I carry/wear a travel neck pouch with my passport and boarding passes. I don't care if I look like a naive new traveller. I was eating in an airport cafe in Austria. A woman and daughter sat down at my table and left before I did. When the waiter picked up their tray, their passports were there on the table ! So, as soon as I get through all the check points, I put my passport in my neck pouch. Once on the plane, I put the pouch into my purse. As soon as we land, I get the pouch around my neck again--some countries check passports on the way out--and I do not want to lose track of it.
@@peggywoods4327 Smart travellers ! I have used the same one for several years. It is a little bulky but has a 'window' and passport section and another section for money or boarding passes.
I panicked when you said Japan will not accept your passport if it expires within 6 months. Mad dash, scramble to find my passport, 😮💨 so happy to see that my passport was good😅Thanks for the heads up and tips in this video.
Mexico is the same way, at least in theory, I think it’s 180 days. My daughter was traveling and her passport was due to expire during that 180 day period but they stamped her through for 180 days anyway.
Great video, Laurie! I’ve been educating myself for over 6 months for our upcoming trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland.I just added 6 things to my “to do” list that I hadn’t thought about until now. THANK YOU!
Thank you for the great tips ! We're going on our first cruise in the Mediterranean soon. Your pickpocket video was great! I'm excited but v anxious about our vacation . Hope all goes ok 🤞
Hi Laurie…..This video was so helpful for my upcoming Christmas Markets tour in Germany, Switzerland and Austria!!! I wrote notes on so much of what you suggested. Thank you!
So many electric items like hair dryers and curling irons these days are dual voltage. Check yours..if they say 100/240w or dual voltage, you only need the adapter to fit the appropriate outlet.
Pilot wife here (retired Delta). Your tips are spot on; thank you so much! Do you happen to know any ladies who would love to travel on space available? He is DONE flying around the world and I still want to explore.
Modern hair tools are almost always dual voltage. I haven’t used a converter in over 20 years. Just check the label. Also check the electrical in the country you are visiting.
Great tips Laurie. I always carry baby shampoo (for my eyes) and that has replaced my eye drops. (replaced my prescription eye drops with this step) Panty liners & personal wipes & mole skin, and no eye makeup until I get to my destination. Hydration on the flight & my go to drink ginger ale/cranberry juice as a treat. All your tips are spot on, especially the safety tips. We're rescheduling our international travel, but sometimes there's a "plot twist". And I just realized my "international" collection of umbrella's needed to be donated & only kept one that was sentimental/useful. Safe travels !
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie my issue was rosacea of my eyelids. So my ophthalmologist suggested I wash my eyelids first thing in the morning and then at night. It has worked well for me and I was able to ditch the Restasis drops. Haven't needed anything for dry eyes (even flying) with this treatment.
I go to my bank before an international trip to get smaller denominations of the international currency. And when I return I store the leftover change/bills until the next trip if it’s a country I travel to frequently. I basically keep a starting cash “float” for the country neighbouring mine in case I need to travel last minute and if banks aren’t open.
When I lived in the UK, I was told that the European and US emergency numbers would work, and the British number would work in Europe. That way when people in a panic call the number they are familiar with it would still go through
Hydration packets are not classified as food or medication. I have taken hydration packets on planes It is not a liquid, it is powder form, so it doesn't count against anything. I have brought it in my carryon and checked luggage. It is packaged in individual serving sizes.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thank you! I got over excited with my last comment😅 Thank you for this info. Now, I will buy level 8 suitcase. I think it's a perfect size to travel with it.😃
Hi Laurie, I appreciate you. I bought many of what you recommended. You showed a neck / forehead support with a connected lumbar support. This helps avoid your head from bupping. I can't find that video. Can you help me find it again. Thank you.
Great tips, Laurie! Gold Bond should be sponsoring you at this point! I'm not a diabetic, nor do I have eczema, but you better bet I've purchased that lotion (and it's legit)! 🤣
Great tips, as usual - I would just add, don't take too much cash if going to London. It's pretty much cashless these days - so you won't need as much as you think. Also, I would caution against using your US credit card on the Tube - much better to get an Oyster card, which if stolen or lost , will only set you back the amount loaded on the card and won't give a thief access to your bank account. Yes, you'll look like a tourist as most Londoners tap in with a credit card, phone or watch, but who cares! Good tip to take two adapters - and one more thing would be to go to a local store when you arrive and buy an extension cord as many of the outlets are inconveniently placed! I also take travel hangers - never had a hotel in London with more than 4 hangers- not enough for two people!
Watch those hydration packets. Some have a lot of sugar. Also, I noticed the ones I have, the B12 in it is the cheap form that we don't metabolize as well. Just take some methylocobalamine B12 if you are deficient. We're wondering what to do when we get off the plane, we think it's 4:30AM, it's 10:30AM there, and we can't check in until 3pm. You said you take a nap--but where? Or do you mean once you get into your room? Good tip with the snack idea. I fast, so I'm going to be totally messed up LOL. When do you take medicine that you would normally take, say, first thing in the morning? Gradually shift it or keep it at that time whatever it is locally (like, it'll be 2:30pm there but I usually take it at 8:30am)
We try to get on that time schedule with food first. I would ask your doc about meds. We will sleep an hour when we can get in the room. Sometimes much earlier than others.
There are travel CPAP machines that are so compact and don't require any water to operate. My husband has one so he leaves his main one at home and packs his travel in his personal item bag and he doesn't notice a difference in machines.
Baby shampoo is a detergent; and like all detergents, it can damage the goblet cells in the cornea which produce the mucin layer that keeps moisture on the surface of your eyes. Also, manufacturing impurities and ingredients have a negative impact on the natural pH. Also, shampoo requires dilution, which brings in the possibility of inconsistent solutions and yet another source of contamination.
The eye drops are especially critical if you wear contact lenses. My regular lenses are monthly, which means I clean them every night and replace with a new pair the first of the month. So it is very expensive to lose a lens!! When I travel, I use daily lenses instead, so if I lose one, it's no big deal because there will be a new pair tomorrow. If you are a lens wearer, be careful to buy the correct single use eye drop packages - some are for use only with contacts, some are for use only without. You really do not want to use the wrong ones!
I was travelling yesterday. At boarding some carry-on suitcases were being checked TO THE FINAL DESTINATION. One woman was only asked if she had a lithium batteries she said no and they checked her bag to Madrid and not Dallas her next stop. She had medicines in the case. So BE SURE MEDICINES ARE IN YOUR SMALLEST CARRY-ON AND ALWAYS ASK WHERE THE BAG IS BEING CHECKED. WILL IT BE TO YOUR NEXT STOP OR FINAL DESTINATION. ALSO, before handing over anything thing like a stub, ticket, etc. Take a picture with your phone in case the stub, ticket gets lost.
I always bring 4 or 5hundred euros so I do t have to get money in an airport. Too public. I keep all the coins from the previous trip so I have money for pay toilets or street musicians right off the bat. Last Spring we drove along the coast of Brittany and Normandy and half of the places we stopped took credit card and half were cash only. I was ready for both. Best vacation ever.
I forget to use my coins and, by the end of the trip, I'm concerned about falling into a body of water because I would go right to the bottom. Very jingly!
Laurie a couple of questions. One, have you ever had an issue internationally on a small airline where they told you your 20” carryon was too big or heavy & had to be checked? Two, I just got a new iPad & of course all of my old blocks & cords can’t be used because everything is being switched to USB-C. How do you keep up with changing technology to carry with you? I feel like I have a pile of worthless stuff that doesn’t go with my devices. 😡
Love your videos ! Do you have one that gives you tips on female solo travelers to another country? Taking Mr first solo trip to London and was just wondering. Thanks 😊
Excellent video as usual! I’d love a video on how you handle electronic gear when you travel - phone, camera, laptop, tablet, etc. What items do you travel with? Do you leave any of them in the hotel room while you go adventuring, and if so, how do you secure them? Or do you try to take everything with you? Thanks in advance :)
Hi Laurie. Heather from Canada loves watching and listening to your videos. I'm off to Greece for the first time. My question, and it's not an appealing subject but it's a reality; bed bugs. Do you have any tips regarding them? Thank you
Did you go on the Viking Basel to Amsterdam cruise? I'm leaving a week from tomorrow to go on that cruise with a pre-stay in Lake Como and After Stay in Amsterdam. I can't wait! I have purchased some of the items that you have recommended including the carry-on suitcase. This is a tip for those of us whose ankles swell after traveling on an airplane (mine never swell at home). I put a hard sided carryon suitcase under the foot of the mattress and sleep on it. When I get up, the swelling is gone. It is the only thing that has worked, and I have been to Europe several times. I also wear compression socks on the plane and during my tours too, but the suitcase under the mattress is the only thing that has worked consistently for me. I also take a Magic Eraser to clean my white shoes. They get dusty with all of the tours, especially the cobblestone streets in Europe.
Thanks for another helpful video! Question: I've got a few reaaaally long international flights coming up and I have a history of blood clots. Now, I have medication and compression stockings and I booked an aisle seat, is there anything else you can think of that I can do? Do I tell the flight attendants? When/how? I do need to get up and move every 2 hrs and don't want to bother anyone.
You are my bff for the moment. Just booked our 25 th anniversary trip to Paris in Oct. gonna binge rewatch all your videos on travel and products. My main concern is my blow dry brush. I need it and I read the converters ruin it. Has anyone used one with a converter with no issue? I have 4 of them and did t want to have to buy a fifth one for Europe.
Another "hack" for hair appliances: buy them there! If it's a one-off trip, donate them to a thrift(charity) shop before you leave. If you travel frequently, then keep it 😊 My hair gets curlier in Europe's damper climate, so styling tools are pretty much useless. (I actually love how my hair gets on its own while I'm there.) Oh wait, I don't use them at home either 😂
One question, you always talk about space, but not about weight. If one uses compression cubes, it helps with space but not with weight that is very limited.
I have the same level 8 20” carry as Laurie. It’s been to 4 European countries in the last few years. No problems. I only do carry on only. I did have to gate check it due to a smaller airplane twice. I don’t fly on a basic airplane ticket. I do upgrade. Hope this helps.
I have seen lots of travel tips but none have spoken about hotel sleeping. What do you wear? How do you pack it? Mostly how to navigate air travel and what to wear for street travel.
I declared my food items in the past (cheese, bacon) and they confiscated them. So I am not sure if requirements have changed or what but that was my experience.
I'm working on pretravel checklists this weekend. our vacation got changed from Scotland to Iceland. Great video, Laurie! I’ve been educating myself for over 6 months for our upcoming trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland.I just added 6 things to my “to do” list that I hadn’t thought about until now. THANK YOU!
Have fun!
Laurie, you are so kind and helpful; very grateful to you for your tips!:)
@@lisacooper5821 Thanks Lisa!!
Very thorough video !! Very practical & useful !Even laundry tips !! Thanks ! 🙏👍👍
Thank you for the great tips ! We're going on our first cruise in the Mediterranean soon. Your pickpocket video was great! I'm excited but v anxious about our vacation . Hope all goes ok 🤞
You’ll do great and have a wonderful time.
THANK YOU❤@@TravelTipsbyLaurie
Hi Laurie…..This video was so helpful for my upcoming Christmas Markets tour in Germany, Switzerland and Austria!!! I wrote notes on so much of what you suggested. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! I have a Christmas Market what not to forget video too.
Totally agree about the MPC app! Not friendly
Merci Laurie.
I usually just bring a laundry soap (like Savon de Marseille) to do my laundry and use the bathroom sink. And voilà.
Voila! Love that tip.
Would love a river cruise packing video
Traveling to Italy this month and your videos have been sooo helpful, thank you Laurie!
Have a beautiful time! So tricky finding the correct weather forecast!
Or better yet I could be your videographer. 🙂
I would join pilot wife groups.
Fantastic video! Great information! Thank you Laurie!
Thanks for watching!
Please do a video for river cruise trips. Leaving soon for Viking Lucerne to Amsterdam. Thanks! Love your videos and travel hacks!
Hi, I do have this: bit.ly/ChristmasMarketDoNOTForget
Modern hair tools are almost always dual voltage. I haven’t used a converter in over 20 years. Just check the label. Also check the electrical in the country you are visiting.
Thanks for the info!
I absolutely want river cruise tips ! 🙏 🙏🙏
I’d love a video on what/ how to pack for a river cruise. We are going on a Viking River cruise in April 2025 for our anniversary.
Hi I have one that is new as of this September. I’ll add it to the I cards that pop up in the top right corner.
Love your videos! Thank you!
Glad you like them!
You use baby shampoo for eye drops?
Wait, fill me in on baby shampoo please??
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie my issue was rosacea of my eyelids. So my ophthalmologist suggested I wash my eyelids first thing in the morning and then at night. It has worked well for me and I was able to ditch the Restasis drops. Haven't needed anything for dry eyes (even flying) with this treatment.
I used tap water when I was in Ireland
Me, too. Avoid the taps in Mexico, however.
Great content! Laurie , I like that T-shirt you are rocking. 🥰
Thanks so much Mary!
Thank you so much. This is so helpful.
Glad to help!
Thank you for all the tips
You are so welcome!
Thanks!
Thank you for these tips! We leave in 10 days for 2 months in Europe, and the little details are stressing me out.
You’ll be fine! Can you write things out. Will that help?
Writing then down does help. Plus I've started to pile a lot of the little things on the guest room bed, ready for packing.@@TravelTipsbyLaurie
When I lived in the UK, I was told that the European and US emergency numbers would work, and the British number would work in Europe. That way when people in a panic call the number they are familiar with it would still go through
Hi Laurie! Re: hydration packets, does custom see that as food or part of medication pack? Thanks for all the tips!
Hydration packets are not classified as food or medication. I have taken hydration packets on planes It is not a liquid, it is powder form, so it doesn't count against anything. I have brought it in my carryon and checked luggage. It is packaged in individual serving sizes.
I have no idea. It’s packaged and not produce etc so it’s okay.
Going on riverside cruise on Danube first part of October. Would love your packing for that.
We’re headed there this week.
Thank you! I can't wait to do to Serbia!
Oh wow, have a beautiful time!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Thank you! I got over excited with my last comment😅 Thank you for this info. Now, I will buy level 8 suitcase. I think it's a perfect size to travel with it.😃
If your curling iron says 110-240V like mine does it will not require a converter. Older appliances are less likely to be dual voltage.
Lots of great tips. TFS
Thx
Thanks Laurie
Hi Laurie, I appreciate you. I bought many of what you recommended. You showed a neck / forehead support with a connected lumbar support. This helps avoid your head from bupping. I can't find that video. Can you help me find it again. Thank you.
Great tips Laurie...
Thanks so much!
Great tips, Laurie! Gold Bond should be sponsoring you at this point! I'm not a diabetic, nor do I have eczema, but you better bet I've purchased that lotion (and it's legit)! 🤣
It’s the best! They have rejected me several times and the people they are using are not even talking about this one 🤷🏼♀️
I've been using that Gold Bond cream for years. I love it!
OMgosh! I bought Gold Bond because of you Laurie! WHY did I not try this sooner? (I am not diabetic or have eczema, but WOW this cream is aHHHmazing!)
Yes love these tip-s-have you heard of @love and London
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie yes - I am a Londoner, but live in the US, and watch several channels like hers. The best one is Suitcase Monkey - he’s a Brit.
I am curious: how much does it cost to use a public toilet? Is it the same all over Europe with the Euro or does it change from country to country?
Hi Laurie! Couldn’t find a link to the S.T.E.P. program? I’d never heard of that and wanted to check it out…. Thanks!
U.S. Secretary of State's website has the STEP information.
So sorry; here ya go: step.state.gov/STEP/Pages/Common/Citizenship.aspx
There are travel CPAP machines that are so compact and don't require any water to operate. My husband has one so he leaves his main one at home and packs his travel in his personal item bag and he doesn't notice a difference in machines.
I need to get one for my mom.
I would do Normandy again tomorrow if I could. Everyone needs to visit.
Musical!
Hi, we have never-we would check it if buying a ticket. I put decorative tape on the device, block and cord for organization.
Same for us. There are still many USB A to USB C cables available until your older blocks wear out or especially if you still need mixed cables.
Love your videos ! Do you have one that gives you tips on female solo travelers to another country? Taking Mr first solo trip to London and was just wondering. Thanks 😊
Hi yes here ya go: bit.ly/Tips4TravelAlone
Laurie, can you collaborate with someone to put out a video on travel tips for people with disabilities? I know I’m not the only one.
I just do not have the capability to get past security. I would get there 3 hours before departure so you are prepared for any delays.
Check your local airports to see if they offer the TSA Cares service. Laurie did a video a few months ago but I don’t have the link.
Yes, please put your river cruise information. We are going next month. Thanks
Okay
Excellent video as usual! I’d love a video on how you handle electronic gear when you travel - phone, camera, laptop, tablet, etc. What items do you travel with? Do you leave any of them in the hotel room while you go adventuring, and if so, how do you secure them? Or do you try to take everything with you? Thanks in advance :)
Great suggestion! I keep everything in the room except for my portable charger.
Hi Laurie. Heather from Canada loves watching and listening to your videos. I'm off to Greece for the first time. My question, and it's not an appealing subject but it's a reality; bed bugs. Do you have any tips regarding them? Thank you
Hi, here is a thorough video. Have fun: ruclips.net/video/P1uzCGiFVY0/видео.html
Great tips! We were on Avalon. Have a beautiful trip!
Hi Laurie. Going on our 2nd Avalon River Cruise soon. Can’t wait. I’ve watched so many of your videos. Always learn something new.
Helpful for Europe. Any tips for international travel to Latin American countries, Africa, Australia, etc?
Do food tours. I can’t think of any different from this.
Stay hydrated!
I would prop feet up on your backpack and maybe once an hour do the abc lower case with each foot.
Note Canada and Jamaica use 110 wiring so you don’t require the adapters noted
yes so glad!
Hmmm make sure you read the fine print on a converter and don’t go by the pics. I used this: amzn.to/4ehB7cy
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie I ordered a dual voltage brush and the adapters you recommended from Amazon. That should do it!
I go to Greece a lot and buy my shoes there :)
Do you have any experience with the flea markers in Paris? I am going to Paris next week and not sure which one to go to.
Have so much fun!
Do you use ziplock quart bag or any suggestions on a true tsa bag?
Another "hack" for hair appliances: buy them there! If it's a one-off trip, donate them to a thrift(charity) shop before you leave. If you travel frequently, then keep it 😊
My hair gets curlier in Europe's damper climate, so styling tools are pretty much useless. (I actually love how my hair gets on its own while I'm there.) Oh wait, I don't use them at home either 😂
So true!
Laurie, we’re going on an extended trip to Europe (two months). I would love to see a video with travel tips for that.
Oh awesome!! Outfit ideas or what?
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie Packing for two months and doing laundry mostly. Thanks!
One question, you always talk about space, but not about weight. If one uses compression cubes, it helps with space but not with weight that is very limited.
Yes. As an Australian, I'm getting used to lots of airlines having a 7kg carryon limit.
Hi Laurie! Does the Level 8 carry on ok for a Europe budget airlines? I am worried, they will check in my carry on luggage. TIA!
Hi, I talked about pajamas in this video and here is a video that may give you ideas: bit.ly/SummerOutfitsEurope
I declared my food items in the past (cheese, bacon) and they confiscated them. So I am not sure if requirements have changed or what but that was my experience.
Cheese was allowed in April because they were vacuum sealed (the cheese monger told me that).
If you are a AAA member you can get euros from your local office. We do for ever European trip. $200 maximum.
OOh, wow, thank you!
Good job mama
When I go to Spain to see friends, I just get up 6 hours later and go to bed 6 hours later. No jetlag problems! 😅
That’s great!
I'm working on pretravel checklists this weekend. our vacation got changed from Scotland to Iceland. I do need to check for medication restrictions and get their emergency number into my phone.we also need to activate international calling on our phones. we also need to remember to take pictures of the bar codes on our passports.
And water-repellent golf pants...have fun!!!
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie we're shopping for the rainshells today, but no golf for me this year.
