  • Undeniably a cool car, I LOVE the Cupra born and everything it stands for but I kind of still want a bit more power. Just me?

    Well done Tish, another thorough and balanced review. I think the only 'could do better' from Cupra would be to have the infotainment screen having a more integrated look in the dashboard. In its current form it looks just a tad stuck on. Of course in the flesh it may look different. If that's all I can slightly moan about it's certainly worth considering. Thanks again.

    I didn't buy the eboost as I would have used it 3 times and got bored, my V2 is quick enough even after owning an Audi S3. The bigger 77kw battery eboost is the same acceleration as a non eboost 58kw version. You can order a variable boot floor, check the options. You can't get pan roof on 77kw version. 77kw version good for longer commute or trips but why dray extra weight around day to day? 77kw also takes longer to charge, example 10 to 80% on 58kw on 7kw charger 6 hours and on 77kw is nearly 9 hours. On 50kw average charger 58kw will take 48 minutes and 77kw will take 65 minutes. 70% use of battery at 3kw/mile (combined summer and winter estimate) is 123 miles for 58kw and 162 miles for 77kw. The weight of the 77kw will give you less range than this calculated value as it adds about 130kg to the car.
    Also if you order a factory order Born I was told today by a main dealer don't expect to see it before 2023.

    Loved this version of the CUPRA born (e-boost) when I had it as a courtesy car for when my Formentor was in for some work a month ago. Had it for a few days and was impressed with the great styling and interior, and I even thought the performance was great. Waiting for the Tavascan to come out. :)

    I got my born vapor gray e boost few days ago...
    (+)
    This car is really beatiful...love from the first sight...vapor gray with 20" blizzard smashes it
    Excellent ergonomics...wild from the outside but family friendly in the inside
    0-100 with e boost...6> sec for sure...
    Drive like you r on train tracks - steering wheel and performance..yes!!!
    Excellent and comfortable seats
    Quiet and fast
    (-)
    Cheap plastic in doors for a car > 40.000 euros
    Function for rear windows...why???
    Buttons on the steering wheel..not annoying in driving, but again...why didnt they use real buttons?
    If you want to open back doors you have to press the key button twice (again...why?)
    Beats audio system ...i expected it much better
    Top speed 160 km/h...come on its cupra!!
    Info system...you get used to it quickly, no problem at all..
    Verdict: love it...well done cupra..

    Range tick? The id3 really suffers from range drop in the winter! Another case of relying on wltp quoted range rather than real world range? Maybe with the heat pump but that is £900 extra on this variant with metallic paint you are approaching 40k and there are some really good, bigger cars for not much more (ionic 5, eV 6, entry polestar 2) does it stack up? Not sure but it is on my short list

    As a owner of a Leon Cupra 290 and Cupra Ateca 310 it's disappointing to see something with so little performance wearing the Cupra badge, also being able to compare the performance to a 1.4 T Jet engine.
    I'm all for EV's and considering the switch myself but I was hoping more from Cupra.
    I think the best option would be to get a Tesla Model 3 Long Range for a extra few grand. Not only for the performance but for Teslas charging network.

    I found the Born hides its weight well until it’s time to brake hard then you really feel the 1700kg underneath you. Perhaps I expect too much coming from hot hatches but the born is supposed to be an electric hot hatch. Bear in mind it’s summer, on brand new tyres and everything new- I think when these are a few years old and in poor conditions and with tyres nearing 1.6mm of tread they are going to catch people out

    • @iain8837
      @iain8837 11 месяцев назад

      Hardly! If your going to drive any car a bit faster on 1.6mm tyres in the dry, this car in particular won’t catch you out anymore than another car. It can be that it handles better with lower tread! The tyres are all very high quality too so grip is good until wear limit. In the wet, aqua planning can be a factor, but that goes for every car, and the weight of this car will help actually.

    • @haslerdesigns
      @haslerdesigns 11 месяцев назад

      @@iain8837 While I agree with your point on aqua planing, my observations were based on heavy braking in the Born. Vehicle weight has a massive impact on stopping distances. This is a heavy car. I did not drive the car ridiculously fast yet found it reasonably easy to get the ABS to activate when slowing from 70mph. This indicates that the car, without ABS, would have lost traction on the front tyres. While ABS avoids a skid and allows the car to steer, its activation indicates a struggle for grip. If the car struggles to brake effectively from speed on a dry and warm day with new tyres then it does not bode well for worser conditions. Marketing the vehicle as a hot hatch which the dealers have definitely tried to do will bring buyers over from hot hatch ICE cars which are generally much lighter. Born owners have received a range of different tyre brands since launch and some perform better than others but by no means are Cupra fitting the Born with the best available rubber.

    • @iain8837
      @iain8837 11 месяцев назад

      @@haslerdesigns I’ve not experienced what you have with my wife’s Born, I have the MPS EV tyres, it’s nearly impossible to activate ABS unless you are really doing an emergency stop, or when it’s wet. Also, looking at various online reviews, and you can check Carwow brake test of a Born, with the smaller tyre size, it stopped in 33m which is no way worse than he vast majority of ICE cars, an RS6 stopped in 31m for comparison. The car is supposedly marketed as a Hot Hatch as you say, I would think that you would need to be incredibly naive to think that a EV of this weight will magically handle like a MX5. The same way as a Skoda Kamiq or Opel Mokka is marketed as an SUV but has no space for rucksack in the boot, you wouldn’t buy it then complain your 4 suitcases have nowhere to go. Marketing is basically out of control these days, look at the range claims! As far as tyres go, you are right, not all have the top rubber, but 99% of owners won’t know the difference. At least in CH, the Born is very popular, many company cars, family cars and lots of driving instructors have them. Yet to see one owned by a typical hot hatch driver. I can say though, when I get a chance to drive my wife’s, I really do enjoy dual lane traffic lights that filter into a single lane, people pull up to get passed you but nobody managed it yet! Cheers
