It's great to be scientific for fun, but in practicality you may want to use a battery as a storage tank from the output of the alternator using an alternator with internally regulated output. This way the inverter can take startup surges better. Also running the alternator at slow speeds to reach your desired voltage while cranking up the amperage will overheat the alternator and melt the windings. FYI.

You are spending more energy running that device than you are creating, remember it is spent in running the motor, it is wasted in heat, friction, in the cool inverter fan etc, to produce only a little, generating noise, heat and Cooriented expense in addition to the cost of all the equipment and you still have to plug the motor into the network "what a waste"
Back in days I had a 120 amp GM alternator on a 8hp Briggs and Stratton that fed 2 big diesel batteries that ran a 1,000watt 120v vanner inverter out of a ambulance that I would back feed from garage to house. That 120 amp alternator would work the 8hp pretty good!

Even better.. Get rid of the AC to DC transformer as well and just plug in to the original power source and use about half the power you loose when converting it form AC to DC to drive a motor to drive an alternator that again converts AC to DC to then run the power through an inverter to change it from DC back to AC... This has to be one of the stupidest projects I have come across. So much power wastage.
It is fascinating. But my auto electrics in me as a mechanic is telling me different. With a 12v car battery to the alternator and a motor to put about 4krpm Into the alternator will get what your after car alternators do have to design to self regulate on 12v. As the output will change when the headlights are switched on for example. The battery drops down to 11v and the alternator is designed to compensate for this and pushes up to 13.7 again. I have achieved running massive amp output with fitting 2 alternators to a car before when I had to do a massive boot in car entertainment build. That had in total 6000w of Amplifiers. But when that bass kicks in it's essential to fit capacitors in there too. I'm going to have a good go at making a generator without any mains feed at all. As I believe it is possible to power my own house without having to pay £20 a week for electricity. The savings itself are astronomical which would be a worth while project.
Did you remove the voltage regulator from the Alternator and simply replace it with the "freehand wire you were using to increase and decrease resistance by lengthening and shortening the connection, and if so; why is the original voltage regulator not used?

YOU WILL GET AN OUPUT OF 220V/120V AC FROM THE INVERTER AND THEN FINALLY STEPPING IT DOWN TO 12V AC WITH A POWERFUL "12V TRANSFORMER FROM AN OLD INVERTER " . I am not sure but I believe that the alternator generates about 50v three phase and it is converted to dc12 by the diode pack. Would it be better to remove the diodes and use a star or delta transformer to achieve the mains voltage? Definitely better with a battery in circuit to buffer the alternator load if sticking with the inverter.
A brilliant idea to replace the resistive wire, measure the resistance of the rotor, calculate at 12v how many amps it will pull (example: for 2 ohms it will require 6 amps) and after calculating the current use LM7812 voltage regulators in parallel as many as needed , if you need 3 amps use 3 or 4 in parallel and voilà. The electronic voltage controllers of the car alternator make the control by the voltage of the rotor, keeping at 12v the output may be more stable or the subtle increase in speed does not raise the output voltage much.
You can build an AVR (automatic voltage regulator) which is a feedback control system that automatically adjusts the rotor DC excitation current so the rectified output voltage of the stator windings is regulated at the desired voltage (for example 11V-15V). The AVR is a current regulator, which can be a DC/DC converter or a linear regulator, equipped with a feedback controller, and takes power from the rectified output voltage of the stator windings and output the current to the rotor DC excitation winding.

I thought perhaps it's just him, but after I see that no one mentioned it in the comments, maybe I'm just being dumb. It's a system that produces AC and is powered by AC, that's clear. So, someone please tell me what's the point in any of this. For real.
Hey, you have some doubts about car alternator, if the alternator is good, that means the pre installed rectifier in the alternator, it produce maximum voltage 14.9 v for 1500 rpm. If the rpm is high the voltage never exceed 14.9v for good alternator. It never produce 20v or more. Then you don't need the motor controller to control the motor if it rpm is more than 1500. Second one, there is no need to use resistance to start using the alternator. It doesn't mean the wattage of the alternator.
culd it by posibel to make a brush type rectifier for dc generators and useing 2 diferent wire size coils in stator winding on a crystal baterry set up ?
Hello , I have a question for you . I have put together a setup using a 12 volt thread mill D/C motor and connected the positive from the motor to the positive of alternator and ground cable of motor to alternato
Ahoy, nice video! May i ask - normaly the car generator should always output 14,4V right? if not, the regulator of the generator is broken. what is ment by the - generator is exited with 20V ? ... is it something like he has to switch to "energy production" mode with the batterie? thanks for clarification.
Hi Mr Electron could i first just say thankyoufor a very interesting and informative video . However could you please answer the question that I and it seems quite a few others would like to know, I presume you are using the mains current to the motor purely for demonstration purposes? as Obviously generating a power supply by using another power supply would totaly defeat the object, so our question is, what would be replaced by the mains supply? for example would you be able to run it from a windmill power system? or some sort of water wheel set up running the motor? what would be the minimum RPM the motor would need to turn in order for the alternator to produce a steady 220v ? Thank you once again
Whats not clear about your video is what is the power source to start your motor when your start it and what is the specs of the motor. It is suppose to be self powered right? But you seem to have in plugged in to start your motor.
I have a Town and Country minivan and my alternator stopped working I replace alternator but still not working I want to bypass PCM / computer because I just need the battery to charge. I have an external voltage regulator and I can get power from fuse box that turns on when the key is on. It should work but it's not Alternator is new and checked and voltage regulator is new too. But still not charging I am missing something, but I don't know what. Can you help me? I will generously make a donation to you. Thanks
Hi! Step 1 - get a 14v dc power supply of at least 10 amps and connect it in place of the alternator. If the battery charges then the problem is with the alternator if not then the alternator is fine and the problem should be somewhere else. Do this and revert.
Yes, if the laptop adaptor is rated at 14 or 15v, it could work. The alternator should be connected to your mini van with 2 wires. You have to disconnect the alternator and connect a power supply in its place. A power supply also has 2 output wires +ve and -ve, and your alternator is also connected with 2 wires to your van. Simply remove the alternator and keep it aside. Then, take the +ve wire of the power supply and connect it to the +ve wire that was initially connected to the alternator and similarly the -ve wires
@@MrElectron 1. I have red wire which goes to battery etc 2. brown and gray field wire from Alternator which I think is ground 3. red and gray wire should I connect laptop adapter power hot wire to #3 and other adapter wire to #2?
Use a automotive break light bulb (incandescent) . I did this long ago to increase output and charge batteries. As the bulb gets brighter the resistance increases, making some voltage regulation.
Sorry for my slow understanding your project here. If the fly wheel driven by an electrical source not 220v, but you need 220v and you use it to drive the alternate and let alternate produce a source and you convert it to the required voltage source. Your videos are awesome and I enjoy reproducing your experiments. Just one thing though, you say “so guys” like a hundred times in your videos to the point I don’t hear anything else anymore 😂 Lol. But in all seriousness bro, I do learn a lot from your videos. Keep em coming.
Why don’t you change your gear ratio on the pulleys? Put a big pulley on the motor to power the small pulley in the alternator. Therefore your motor could work at lower speeds mimicking high speeds.
One thing I like is the variable speed dc treadmill motor. I have put these 1 or 2 horsepower motors on my lathe, drill press and milling machines using the micro vee belt to suit the pulley.
Just wondering, what is the use of that switch with a wire that clipped into the table, looks like connected to the outlet as your power source. Unplug that let see what happen..
What about removing the rectifier from the altenator. The rectifier converts the ac to dc output. Or what about removing the regulator? If the redtifier was removed, it would be straight ac output?
Is the motor a high voltage brushed dc motor which uses in treadmill? And what will happen if you replace the electromagnetic rotor and use a permanent magnet rotor? will the current and voltage increase in a lower rpm ?
This makes no sense 😂😂 😂😂😂😂 2:50 left -mechanical inverter Right- real inverter Least you used a tungsten bulb But it's still dumb idea like the rest of em
So, if your power is out, but your neighbor has power, and you have a extension cord, a treadmill motor, some belts, an alternator, and a power inverter you can jump the fence steal the neighbors power and light a tiny bulb. If you have larger appliances like a 1500 Watt toaster oven, simply plug them directly into the cord.

I agree Michael, and I watch all his videos. Please don't let my sense of humor take anything away from this video. Any RUclips producer who is educating himself and his viewers is doing a great thing.
Yeah a heavy duty extension cord running to the neighbor's garage is the best way I know to get "free power". If you cleverly conceal the cord, this can work for quite q while without interruption.
Helo Mr Electron, I love this video so much, especially as it makes your viewers part of the investigation process. Thank you. But there are a few questions I will like to ask. 1. Don't you think making out just 350 watts from a 3000 watts inverter is not ideal? 2. What is the possible way to solve the issue of the resistance wire getting burnt?

Right?

The tutorials you people show are awe inspiring!
clearly you are troll or you DON'T have a clue, what's real.
So what is your Watts in on the motor controller? More that the watts out.
Should use 10gage wire on field activation as well 12 volt battery in parallel with the inverter, then drill will run with no problem
Hello. Can I ask something?
Dude! Wtf am I missing here?!?! I looked through most of the comments and no one mentioned the fact that he's starting with AC and producing AC! Wtf is the point??!?! I thought perhaps it's just him, but after I see that no one mentioned it in the comments, maybe I'm just being dumb. It's a system that produces AC and is powered by AC, that's clear. So, someone please tell me what's the point in any of this. For real.
Ac powered for demonstration… must be dumb😅
Hey, you have some doubts about car alternator, if the alternator is good, that means the pre installed rectifier in the alternator, it produce maximum voltage 14.9 v for 1500 rpm. If the rpm is high the voltage never exceed 14.9v for good alternator. It never produce 20v or more. Then you don't need the motor controller to control the motor if it rpm is more than 1500.
Second one, there is no need to use resistance to start using the alternator. It doesn't mean the wattage of the alternator.
is the top red clamp arcing to the top of the alternator ? Not the large clamp the small one you used when the thin wire broke .
Did you consider the ratio of your pulleys?
This is genius, now try to connect the motor power to the inverter outlet. You might need to excite the alternator while switching.
Finally at last a video showing something that really works !
Where did you get your motor ' is it a tread mill motor ?
culd it by posibel to make a brush type rectifier for dc generators and useing 2 diferent wire size coils in stator winding on a crystal baterry set up ?
You have the DC motor running off of the grid and not off the alternators created power through a converter and battery power
Hi Mr Electron
could i first just say thankyoufor a very interesting and informative video . However could you please answer the question that I and it seems quite a few others would like to know, I presume you are using the mains current to the motor purely for demonstration purposes? as Obviously generating a power supply by using another power supply would totaly defeat the object, so our question is,
what would be replaced by the mains supply? for example would you be able to run it from a windmill power system? or some sort of water wheel set up running the motor? what would be the minimum RPM the motor would need to turn in order for the alternator to produce a steady 220v ? Thank you once again
Have you used one of your generators to power like your house, if so can you explain how?u
Nice innovation, But can we Also use Inline UPS in place of Inverter?
Can u tell from alternator terminal ur feeding inverter and also connecting rotor terminal ....or else rotor terminal and statir ouptut are shorted ..
Nice 👍 bro 🙏👍👋🇬🇧
Whats not clear about your video is what is the power source to start your motor when your start it and what is the specs of the motor. It is suppose to be self powered right? But you seem to have in plugged in to start your motor.
working super nice how much current is the DC motor using and where is it coming from as you can hear the load as it is applied !!!
@@MrElectron 14v dc like a power adapter for laptop? connect in place of alternator?(which connections)?
Yes, if the laptop adaptor is rated at 14 or 15v, it could work. The alternator should be connected to your mini van with 2 wires. You have to disconnect the alternator and connect a power supply in its place. A power supply also has 2 output wires +ve and -ve, and your alternator is also connected with 2 wires to your van. Simply remove the alternator and keep it aside. Then, take the +ve wire of the power supply and connect it to the +ve wire that was initially connected to the alternator and similarly the -ve wires

1. I have red wire which goes to battery etc
2. brown and gray field wire from Alternator which I think is ground
3. red and gray wire
should I connect laptop adapter power hot wire to #3 and other adapter wire to #2?
Use a automotive break light bulb (incandescent) . I did this long ago to increase output and charge batteries. As the bulb gets brighter the resistance increases, making some voltage regulation.
Nice work you understand soo well make it easy to be explaned
SUPERB!"
You da Mann !"
Thanks Friend !"
Good Shepard u r
Sorry for my slow understanding your project here. If the fly wheel driven by an electrical source not 220v, but you need 220v and you use it to drive the alternate and let alternate produce a source and you convert it to the required voltage source. Was it right? Did I take a long stretch to reach my other ear?
Excellent 👏👌👍😊😍❤️❤️
Good idea 👍
Why did you use the resistance? is it because you need to protect the inverter?
my friend what is the motto f this project ......
Well at least he's trying to invent something.
maybe he is. maybe you are giving too much credit. maybe he's just another BS'er. all these boys who seem to think that USING the output power is informative, Are MISTAKEN !!!! googletranslate
Mr electron is it possible to assemble a system that can power at least a 500watt load? and what would be the cost of it.
Where do you get those positive and negative clips at
It's possible to charging a 12 volt battery ?
One thing I like is the variable speed dc treadmill motor. I have put these 1 or 2 horsepower motors on my lathe, drill press and milling machines using the micro vee belt to suit the pulley.
And once it's running you quickly plug the cord from the DC regulator in the output of the inverter and you have free energy. YEAH!
Just wondering, what is the use of that switch with a wire that clipped into the table, looks like connected to the outlet as your power source. Unplug that let see what happen..
yeah that s what i see, hes using a IEC plug with 220v, converting it to 12v then back to 220v???? what is the point ...
Hello, nice video ! can you get out of the alternator 220v instead of using the inverter ?
The alternator can only produce 14 volt DC output not 220vac
Ok so I understand the 90 amp that runs the motor. What if added alternators 160 amp and 460 amp or close are added to the pully set up??
Folosește o rezistență cu răcire din ceramică.Cred că va merge.
Use a ceramic cooling heater. I think it will work
How many rpm have you used in it...?
This makes no sense 😂😂 😂😂😂😂
2:50 left -mechanical inverter
Right- real inverter
Least you used a tungsten bulb
But it's still dumb idea like the rest of em
Nice..I like it idol!
very very jenius man.................... i love it
So, if your power is out, but your neighbor has power, and you have a extension cord, a treadmill motor, some belts, an alternator, and a power inverter you can jump the fence steal the neighbors power and light a tiny bulb. If you have larger appliances like a 1500 Watt toaster oven, simply plug them directly into the cord.
@John Hadleigh Honestly, sarcasm can be hard to read. Although the four thumbs up would imply that some people can read sarcasm. P.S. Fix the all CAPITOL letters issue by simply pressing the "CAPS LOCK" button which is SCREAMING at you from the left side of your keyboard.
still a pretty fun vid
I agree Michael, and I watch all his videos. Please don't let my sense of humor take anything away from this video. Any RUclips producer who is educating himself and his viewers is doing a great thing.
Yeah a heavy duty extension cord running to the neighbor's garage is the best way I know to get "free power". If you cleverly conceal the cord, this can work for quite q while without interruption.
so can you power this with a solar panel? i'm not understanding. where is the voltage from the DC motor coming from.
So is the generator still running on a plug in out let
What of connecting a neodymium magnet to the alternator to be self excited what will happens please reply
Helo Mr Electron,
I love this video so much, especially as it makes your viewers part of the investigation process. Thank you. But there are a few questions I will like to ask.
1. Don't you think making out just 350 watts from a 3000 watts inverter is not ideal?
2. What is the possible way to solve the issue of the resistance wire getting burnt?
when an inductive load is applied- the initial start up amps is x3 - so 1000w
