@@kennethsmith8968 I have been a Rush fan since 1975, seen every tour since Hemispheres and by far this would not be one of there great nor epic songs. @@johnnorwood507 I stuck?learn to spell dipshit.YOU SUCK!!!!.if you cant feel the energy and emotion on this song then maybe you aren't such a fan after all
for me i liked from first hearing. but when i was a ten yr old girl i was buying records with japanese and chinese and arabic singing so was used to different ways of singing.. but i thing he had a great voice and way of singing.
In terms of live performances, I feel like Geddy's voice peaked after Vapor Trails, because after about that point I found he couldn't hit the notes on some of their older stuff like he used to be able to.
Amazing song. One of my favoties. Sure, Geddy has become somewhat limited in range in the last decade or so, but *almost* every male singer goes through that to some extent in their later years. Many of them tune down as much as a whole step. I don't think Rush ever dropped pitch at all. You have to listen back to those earlier albums to hear what an amazing singer he always was. One of the highest ranges for a male singer ever. His "rivals" of the time were guys like Plant, Coverdale, Rik Emmett, Geoff Tate, Mickey Thomas, etc... and he was right up there with all of them. He probably quit feeling like he had to compete with them after Moving Pictures. Phil Collins was one of the guys who never over-extended his range. He still sounds like he did forty years ago. * "almost," as in... Glenn Hughes.
I've always loved the "this is not a love song, this isn't fantasy land" part, and Geddy raising his arm to underline the power of those lines makes it even more incredible.
Geddy vocals and. The guitar and drums by be alrex and Neil as a band mskes this song by awesome as well as the lyrics butt kicking it's a bit shame be they broke up I grew up with Rush the most amazing band be I've heard
Thinking all this could be over is killing me. I was raised on Rush, and at 52 I don't see any other band capturing my attention like these guys have done. Heartbroken..
+Sharon Kaufman Ditto for me at 38. This was my first Rush concert, then life got in the way and I never got to see them again after Vapor Trails :( :( :(
+Sharon Kaufman Great post.. I learned to play guitar to Moving Pictures, named my son Alex and have now seen the boys with him. In turn, my son has turned me onto Guthrie Govan, Intronaut and Steve Wilson Now at 49, few modern acts hit me the way RUSH still does.
They are, and always will be in a class by themselves. I took my 16 year old to R40, so passing the torch was an awesome feeling, but still sad. At least I was fortunate enough to spend many years with the boys.
+Sharon Kaufman ......Hey now, I understand feeling as if there's a goodbye happening, but it's not quite as stark as that. The long tours are over, the 3 hour shows are over, but all the guys are relatively healthy(beyond a debilitating case of the 60s) and in a good space. There will be more music and media from them. The time they've been back since the 96-2002 Rushless period has been a glorious, triumphant era for the band and their biggest fans. Now they're transitioning into another phase. For fans of their new music, hope remains.
Ascension Arts And Digital Media I completely agree. I think, or hope, that after some time off Neil will get the itch. Even if it's a studio album and a residency I would be good with that, as would many others. Geddy is healthy, he is doing all the right things to stay healthy. All we can do is wait. Thank for the words of encouragement!
I think the physical display of emotion from Geddy where he throws his fist in the air, the drum fills at the end where Neil just absolutely hammers the crash symbols, and Alex’s solo really pushes the point this song tries to make.
I've been digging them since I was a wee little hippy in the seventies. Now I'm an old fat grandfather and take a stab at who's still rockin' on my stereo at nearly max decibels? These guys have always had it and always will. I think I'll take the kids to lakeside park.
I cannot believe it's been 28 years since this song and album. Where did the time go? I have always loved this album and still think of it as Rush's new music, one of their best after their 70's and 80's classics.
@@antimurphy8212 pretty much everything. Most of the mainstream is dance music rooted in 90s, but you can find preety much anything if you look enough. Try Manaam if you're into altrock sounds.
geddy's mom and dad came from poland and after they were saved from nazi death camps his grandma and parents were able to emigrate to canada. his name is gary but the polish accent turned it in to geddy.
dadadruma, that was after the Test For Echo tour, 1996-97. This was the Counterparts tour, 1994. But I agree, he went through hell. It's a good thing he recovered from it.
Counterparts is easily my favorite release from the '90s. Neil's lyrics really resonate on this one. I played this song for an ex-girlfriend once and told her to listen to the words... the look on her face was priceless! Notice how I say "ex"?
I am a rush fan but I do not force my musical choices on people. I expect them not to push theirs on me. My 3 favorite bands- rush, U.K. and Dio. Baby Metal and Band Maid are amazing too. If you choose to listen to them fine if you do not fine.
I was there too! I was one of those Canadians that "snuck over the border." Ha! Back in the 90s you could still cross without much hassle. Saw a lot of great concerts in Michigan.
This album is an even bigger eargasm than it was 21 years ago! Been going back to it quite a lot lately. Saw them on this tour and I was ecstatic when they busted out Hemispheres Prelude! Only disappointment was they didn't play Alien Shore!
Geddy's...singing .the best in pro rock... That's the first time i felt for a voice...1979.... The rest is oké too...HIHI..lol.... Rush the best band ever..
The last tour I saw Rush on, due to physical economic conditions. I've gained more of a newfound affection for this song just in the past few months, but Rush is timeless in that way, which is why the 3 times I saw them are like a level all of their own.
Counterparts really hit big in 1993 I remember seeing the video for “Stick It Out” on MTV which never plays them and than seeing them with kickass opening acts like The Melvin’s,I Mother Earth and of course Primus on the Counterparts Tour 94
Absolutely LOVE this song and wish they would put it back in the show. Does anyone know if this song ever had an 'official video'? This and 'Spirit of Radio' have got to be my favorite Rush songs......well, wait, then there's...... TOO many great songs by Rush!
"This is a good old-fashioned country song called Cold Fire."
Gotta love how crazy these guys are.
"cowed faare" haha
Counterparts is a treasure, in my top 3 albums ever. This song has some of my favorite Neil lyrics.
Totally agreed
From a production and sonic perspective, it is their best. The songs are pretty good too ;-)
Agreed..what an album.
easily top 3 for me too, and possibly the most melodic Rush album ever

Ryan Haydock AGREED! Counterparts had more love songs per capita than your average Rush album and this stands out amidst that albums moodiness 💗😎😌😌😌💗
I always wished we had more of Alex's vocals, harmony or counterpoint. They add a nice dimension to the sound.
He’s not really singing here. Those harmonies and counter melodies are all prerecorded or preprogrammed.
