Frankly speaking, this is the first time I have ever heard someone say that people mock Geedy lee's voice. It's thoroughly impossible, his voice is one of the most Unique, Powerful & Beautiful Voices in this Universe. Those who mock his voice must be Deaf or Jealous.
Um, in fairness he kind of grew into what you're describing. On some of the 70s stuff - especially live, covering complex bass parts and handling primitive, complicated synth technology at the same time -- he was on the shrill side, and you sometimes got that chipmunk on helium effect. By this time he had matured into an extremely emotive and competent vocalist, easy on the ears, and still just as unique. Ged's voice + Neil's words + Alex's guitar was the emotional impact of Rush.
this rendition (and the tour in general) is filled with improv. They never played it this way on future tours. Plus Alex's guitar delay and reverb this tour was simply out of this world. He had a weird echo going through harmonics I think that created almost a continual screaming howl on every note he played. After this tour, Rush changed big time.
He actually sings it like that on the record. If you listen closely, you can hear the vocal harmonies and that high part. Still, it's nice to hear just that part isolated. Geddy's voice is just so nice. I can'y imagine anyone singing Rush songs and as good as him.
This is probably the best live version of any song i've ever heard by rush, and neil peart is the greatest musical philosopher and drummer to ever live! This is exactly how I feel about life!
This is the best live version of this song I've come across. Better than A Show of Hands, R30, etc. From the vocals to keyboard sounds to the extended ending w/distortion... they just absolutely nailed it with this version. I wish there was a proper download of this of a higher than RUclips quality.
I don't know why so many people mock his voice. He has virtually perfect pitch. Geddy Lee is probably one of the most underrated singers in rock and roll history.
Gotta love the mandolin to guitar switch at 3:35 without missing a beat and then going on to finish the song like he never made a switch at all. Alex is sooooo underated and sooooo good. Sometimes I think it's because he makes it look so effortless playing that people don't realize the complexities of some (if not most) of their songs. Damn RUSH RULES!!!!!!!!
They are such masters of their craft, often when bands are such good players their songs sound convoluted and lack melody. But Rush never has that problem, they always craft melodies first. Amazing song..
Alex's rhythm playing gives this song a really solid foundation to explore its ethereal realms. He fills the space he's given in this song very tastefully, and it's just as good as any song like La Villa where he's shredding his fingers off. Such an insanely talented guitarist!! Thanks for posting this video!
I saw Rush in Orlando Fl.that year.Best concert I ever saw.It was the Counterparts tour. The acoustics and theatrics brought each song to life in it's own way.🙂
OK RUSH fans....Rush is my favorite band of all time...I've rocked to all their songs from 1975 to now and THIS IS THE Rush song that says it all for me...Thanks for a lifetime of moving music RUSH!...
Rush is an anti-image band, and Geddy is a real man, no fancy shit for him, no surgery, nothing flashy. Its all about the music, and the soul. He doesn't need looks to win people over, not that I think hes ugly or anything. I think Image bands are a step back in human evolution. To like a band only for looks is soo primitive and shallow....
Dude Just discovered your Channel. Love it! However as a life long Rush fan since. 1977. And a hard core cyclist I find Ironic! Just a little bit Ironic! I suffered. A broken Femur in a super werid bicycle. Accident 3 months ago and now I discovered a Rush fan whose name is Roll the Femur. You owe me nothing but I Love the Name!!! 🥁📺🔩🐰
When the Power Windows album came out in 85-86 I didn't like this song at first because it didn't "rock" the way I was expecting, but when I went to the concert at the Spectrum in Philly, THIS song blew me and my friends away. They weren't Rush fans before, but they were after. One of the most amazing live songs and light shows ever. Rush = greatest rock band (and yes, I have Power WIndows, and every other pre-90s Rush album on vinyl records FTW!)
@Hahaurfunnyassole not to correct u but get serious...0:00 to 6:04!!!!.......im so glad i am alive to have seen these guys...no band like them ever...there are those get them and then there is the rest of the world...!!...IM GLAD IM ONE OF US...5 time machine tours and counting...but man can we see power windows in full next...!!!
I don't know if anybody else feels the same, but I remember when I first listened to Rush (Geedy Lee's Voice) it sounded like an innocent child's voice mixed with a Man's voice. A UNIQUE VOICE - Beautiful, Innocent, Childlike, Powerful, Fantastic....
ABSOLUTLEY BRO! I thought the Exact same thing when I saw it. If there's any one thing that can define King Lerxst, it's Fluidity. He never misses a beat and comes up with the best arpeggiated/flowing figures known! And check out ESL video of Xanadu and watch him switch from the 12 to the 6 string (around 4:57) during the chorus. I'm Sure you know...UnFuckin'believable!! I have NO idea how he does it. But he makes it look so simple and..fluent! Actually makes this look like cake. Go RUSH!
Damn, why is there no official release for this Michigan gig? I know there are a few tracks on the Different Stages live album but a proper CD oder DVD of the Counterparts tour would be so amazing.
You need 4 separate brains to play the drums on this one. Lots of fun but man... talk about concentration. I can't play this one yet. Peart can be annoyingly frustrating to learn sometimes. Thank God! :)
is that alex's 12 string hawiian that he plays in the music video? i didn't get a clear shot. this is a pretty sweet version. should have been in diffrent stages!
i remember sitting at the nose bleed section at this concert and i kept hearing the sampled voices way ahead of the music and very loud because they have special speakers for the samples at the top of the stadium to create the coming from heaven voices.......this was very annoying. but i love this band !
The Ovation? Yeah, I'm saving up to get one very soon... I played one and I must say, it is nice, even though it sounds like an acoustic guitar if unplugged, but when I get I'll fix that. heheh.
@colourglue Yeah good point. It hammers home my earlier sentiment regarding Rush and Led Zepplin. Rock Gods vs average Joe. Average Joe is the one who can suprise you over the years. NOT to take anything from Zep. As far as I am concerned Zep and Rush are the most talented over the last 40+ years. Leaving lots of great bands out of the mix though.
This has to be one of the coolest drum beats in rock. Not like the lame ass White Stripes and Seven Nation Army and everyone jizz their pants over the drumming in that song.
@@DrKFC69 They didn't play anything from "Hold Your Fire," either. Big disappointment, but then again I never missed a tour so I got to hear material from those albums when it was fresh & new.
This is a difficult song to nail live from all the midi, switching guitars for Alex and alternative tunings etc. Yet they seem almost bored nailing it lol
Ged's voice was beautiful that night. Such a tender treatment to this song. What a sense of melody that man has.
Frankly speaking, this is the first time I have ever heard someone say that people mock Geedy lee's voice. It's thoroughly impossible, his voice is one of the most Unique, Powerful & Beautiful Voices in this Universe. Those who mock his voice must be Deaf or Jealous.

One of the most haunting RUSH songs. So much emotion in this tune!!
Drums perfect as always .. guitar perfect as always .. bass perfect as always .. RUSH perfect always!

Voice is perfect

12 years removed... but if you see this reply, do you know if there's a HQ version of this version available somewhere for download/purchase?
No one could sing Rush songs like The great Geddy Lee and they would be idiots to even try..
Mystical 😢🎉😮😅😊
God, Geddy's voice is perfect here
After the 90's his voice seems to struggle.
@@daveyt4802 I'd say his voice was pretty solid during 02-03, but back-to-back touring Vapor Trails and R30 did a number on him
This is probably the best live version of any song i've ever heard by rush, and neil peart is the greatest musical philosopher and drummer to ever live! This is exactly how I feel about life!

Does anyone else get shill bumps listening to this?
It is January 12, 2020 and Neil Peart passed away this week......I have goosebumps and chills.

I loved his voice but it changed after he started taking singing lessons, same with Neil didn't play the same after lesson.

Man. I miss seeing rush live every few years sooo bad. What an experience!
This song kicks ASS and great live!!!!!!
The mad scientists of rock!
Rush = PERFECTION
Timeless and immortal band. God bless Rush!
This is actually one of my favorite Rush songs of all time. All Rush is great, but Signals/GUP/PW will always hold a special place in my heart.
They are such masters of their craft, often when bands are such good players their songs sound convoluted and lack melody. But Rush never has that problem, they always craft melodies first. Amazing song..
This happened on my 14th birthday but I was still a couple years away from discovering Rush. Would have blown my mind to see this back then.
My favorite rush song........

one of my favorite rush beats by the greatest
One of the best and beautifully constructed drum parts of Newil's career. Very inventive and hard to play. very under-rated song of his.

@Hahaurfunnyassole what about 6:04? I thought that part had a lot of soul :)
I liked Neil’s electric drums better when it was paired with the acoustic kick and snare and real cymbals.
