In 1982, n°1 UK for Captain Sensible.
Written by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II. Introduced by Juanita Hall in her role as Bloody Mary in the musical South Pacific which premiered March 7, 1949 in the Shubert Theatre in New Haven.
This recording was made either April 18 or May 16 with Salvatore Dell'Isola Orch for Columbia. In the 1958 film version, Hall was overdubbed by Muriel Smith (at the request of Rodgers), who was part of the London Cast.

A daring thing! A charming memory for me. I was 8 years old when the show was new. I remember hearing this on the album pictured above that my parents bought after seeing the show. However, having just seen the 1952 London production at the Drury Lane Theatre with Mary Martin, Wilbur Evans and Muriel Smith as Bloody Mary, I can understand why Richard Rodgers wanted Smith's voice for the movie. Muriel Smith was MARVELOUS in the role, and vocally superior to Hall. I suppose we could think having Hall onscreen with Smith's voice dubbed in was his way of paying tribute to BOTH of these great ladies of the theater. Hall must have been heartbroken, however. But please don't think ill of Muriel Smith, she was a very great performer. Showbizz is often heartbreaking.
