ABOUT RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN
After long and highly distinguished careers with other collaborators, Richard Rodgers (Composer, 1902-1979) and Oscar Hammerstein II (Librettist/Lyricist, 1895-1960) joined forces in 1943 to create the most successful partnership in American musical theater. Prior to joining forces, Rodgers collaborated with lyricist Lorenz Hart on musical comedies that epitomized wit and sophistication (Pal Joey, On Your Toes, Babes In Arms and more), while Hammerstein brought new life to operetta and created the classic Show Boat with Jerome Kern. Oklahoma!, the first Rodgers & Hammerstein musical, introduced an integrated form that became known as “the musical play.” Their shows that followed included Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. Collectively, the Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals have earned Tony, Oscar, Grammy, Emmy, Pulitzer, and Olivier Awards. The Rodgers & Hammerstein Organization is a Concord Company, www.concord.com.

0:50 If this isn't the cutest thing You have ever seen, well I don't know what is! Unless You can get little kittens doing the actions!
My parents immersed us in the world of epic musicals. This one is so special to me. I find myself whistling this tune to call my pups, and my parents are with me in spirit
That's good
Mine too
Mine too parents in dogs LOL. I was walking around the house singing it and I decided it actually listen to it. My parents did the same thing we are immersed in culture. I thank them everyday
Sweet!
Godbless u darling 😉😎
This scene gets better every time I see it. France Nuyen is expressive and beautiful beyond words, the singing and orchestration perfection.
Not at all like the character she played in the Star Trek episode Elaan Of Troyius.
Absolutely gorgeous she was back then

I have played this everyday since I seen the film that must be , 38 years ago it’s my good feeling song , and now I sing it to wash my hands 😅
It does make you feel so good, I personally am obsessed with the Don Shirley arrangement introduced to me from “Green Book.”
LOL a great song ... words to live by :D too and your hands are clean.. not much talking together right now though.. just digitally :(
:-)
you re an imbecile
gabriel morgan why because it makes me happy and you a miserable imbecile ,
This song is dubbed over in my head whenever I'm with someone who's talking too long
Ahahahaha
Lol
😂
When Joe Cable met Liat for the first time, John Kerr (the actor playing Joe Cable) perfectly emoted how a man who is lovestruck would look and act. You can read it in his eyes he was totally mesmerized beyond speech!! I just love that scene!!!
Such a wonderful song, a lovely way to remember all those who lost their lives in the South Pacific in WWII, including my Great Uncle I never had the chance to meet.
From 1955. This is such a classic "happy" song from the Broadway musicals. Juanita Hall is not even Polynesian but totally looks like she is. She was perfect for this role
So glad we actually implore actual actors that are the race they are playing now.
@geoleo2597: 1) It was 1958; 2) Juanita Hall was Africa American; 3) Her vocals were dubbed by Muriel Smith who played both Bloody Mary in SOUTH PACIFIC and Lady Thiang in THE KKNG AND I when those shows played at the Drury Lane, London; 3) It is far more important that talent is the determining factor not ethnicity. After all, Yul Brynner was not Thai/Siamese in THE KING AND I, Mary Martin was not Austrian but from Texas and Julie Andrews born in England for THE SOUND OF MUSIC.
The role of Bloody Mary and Liat is Tonkinese (northern Vietnamese).
@@secret902 I'm not sure about that. Tonkinese is not a race of people, but a breed of cat. The movie was in the South Pacific so I believe Mary was referring to Tonga but called themselves "Tonkinese" but that may have been for creative writing to make it sound good for the movie. There's many politically incorrect words in the movie. There's no Bali Hai either. And of course, Bali is Indonesia, again not in the South Pacific.
@@geoleo2597The author of the original book, James Michener, specifically described Bloody Mary as a Tonkinese woman, modeling it on a Vietnamese woman he met while in the South Pacific (according to his memoirs). At that time, Tonkin was the northernmost portion of Vietnam under French rule.

My mum subjected me to this movie, and I just loved it. The music and romance are beautiful.
A superb musical film, standing the test of time very well. Perhaps my most favourite film of all time. I am a romantic so there !
One of the most perfect 4 minutes of all time. ❤️❤️❤️
But shortly after that Mary gets furious with the guy and storms off never to see him alive again
@@impassable the only bright side to that is that she was going to marry Liat off to someone else, but the fact that they traveled to the Navy’s base in search of Cable indicates Liat knows how to stand up for herself and what she wants, and will never allow her mother to keep her from anything again. We can only hope that she did find love again; I doubt anyone really took Cable’s place in her heart.
Not only song, but the video is also beautiful. Every tropical beauty has united as one
Bro youre here from emart dont even try to hide it
I finally googled and found this after a million years of thinking 🤔 what was that childhood song 🤣
A classmate of mine had this song as her torture song.

Same. This and Bali Hai.
I love it
I know what you mean. I always think of my Grandparents when I hear this song.
Lucky enough to have seen the film around 1958,loved it since.
Great film and I love musicals
When I was a much younger man, I was in a community theatre performance of this show. It is one of my favorite memories. I was a Sea-Bee. Basically the chorus but it such a fun show to do.
Wonder if we'll ever have musicals again.

This is just one more delightful "catchy" numbers from the great soundtrack to the blockbuster "South Pacific". What wonderful sound score, from top to bottom. A perfect creation, "South Pacific". A masterpiece, really.
South Park musical better tho
Hammerstein was a master at writing upbeat, happy lyrics.
Amen to that

I showed South Pacific at the Gaumont Manchester for 2 years in wonderful Todd AO to packed houses every night. I still play the D V D and it still brings back to me great memories of my time at the Gaumont sadly demolished in the 70,s
To go back in time......what a great song to lift my spirits.....happy talk, talk about things you like to do!!!!
France Nuyen was truly a beautiful actress, still is as we speak!
This song has always made me feel good and from this day I will do as Anne Lewis said below that she does - I will play it EVERY DAY. Thank you for making it possible for me to do that.
I forgot to add that I LOVE Captain Sensible singing it too !
I Think Tails was Rhythmic Gymnastic 🤸🏻♀️
My parents also showed me all these types of films. I love them. Now we oldies have to show our children and grandchildren.
France Nuyen was just lovely and charming in this movie. (She's still beautiful 64 years later).
Absolutely!
the words are so beautiful.
One of my favourite shows. I loved playing the part of Cable many years ago.
Lucky you 😆
+amy clarke Yes very lucky. The young lady playing Liat was a beautiful girl, and she was great. I will never forget that show.
Thania Ramirez he probably played it him in a play
@@thania-ramirez There's a stage show, which of course predated the film and has often been revived.
I just love this movie.
South Pacific has always been one of my favourite musical
LOVE IT EACH TIME I SEE OR HEAR IT!
We sang this song during our elementary/primary days without knowing about the movie. Liutelan is sexy! Then saw this movie when i was a young girl and been trying to watch it as a whole. Liat and Cable were easy on the eyes. Love them as lovers. Just sad they dont have a happy ending. The movie's message of love and war are relateable.
This is perfection in every way
Such a beautiful movie and lovely song.
One of the most beautiful song's I've ever listened to.
absolutely love this film one of my favourites
i danced this song on my grandfathers birthday party wow xD
Happy memories! We had this album at our home in the country growing up. Always loved listening to it as did my parents.
I did not know the song “Happy Talk” was from this movie 😲 Rodger and Hammerstein are a genius in composing songs.
That explains it!!!
I heard the Captain Sensible one first which was a hit in England back in 1982.
Yes! Your dreams only come true when you talk happy or feel good ❤️✨☀️
Ah, the memories, beautiful song
I had this song at my grandba’s funeral and I miss her so much😔💔💖
Kar Rowson I’m sorry
Remember that missing someone you love is only a temporary feeling, though it lasts a lifetime. Kar, you and your gran are loved by all who identify with you. Peace forever.
Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein..truly, UNIQUE PEOPLE...let's see how many years go on, till we see, others like them...truly...MARVELOUS COMPOSERS...
Agreed! It was a truly unique time for musical theater. None before or since can compare!

Loved this wonderful film as a child ❤
It's so funny, I remember my baby teeth coming out while watching this movie in the 70s! This movie always makes me think of that time.
When I feel down I listen to this song
I love listening to this song. It makes me happy and reminds me of what I choose to put into my mind. What I choose to ruminate on. Flipping the script of the toxic and negative energies of other people who I may encounter along the way of ones life. Not absorbing anyone else's ways of doing things or obsessing about. If your going to obsess about something listen to this song first. A happy life begins with happy talk.
🌹❤
"And finally, dear Brothers and Sisters, fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable and right and pure and lovely and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise." Philippians 4:8

Also, it's a great old song that fits Kpop girl group style very well, a lot better than it fits current American style - ruclips.net/video/x14Oj7eZKvw/видео.html
@James Henry Smith Captain Sensible - Happy Talk
Lmfao at your post everybody assumes south Pacific is hawai
I just listened to the song. An old memory of mine. I am not even that old and I know it.
they really dont write songs as good as this anymore.
I've forgotten how beautiful this film was, and how many cultural issues it touched upon, while framed by a world war. This scene alone - the romance between an Island girl and Joe Cable a white Marine from the midwest (ostensibly his firm time away from home since OCS), speaks of joy and hope, and a future beyond war. Better still, that the producers of this film didn't use white actors in makeup, but hired a native girl and Juanita Hall to play Bloody Mary; herself part black and part Irish.
GiacomoKnox it wasn’t beautiful, the whole film is just...what the fuck it’s so wrong
No one fucking cares, enjoy the song
Part black and part Irish...and not at all Polynesian, eh.
The “native girl” has a name. France Nguyen Van-Nga. She is a native of France and is of Vietnamese lineage. She is a clinical psychologist and worked as a counselor for abused women and children. She was also married to Robert Culp for several years.
Casual Observer Chill, she probably just forgot her name.
This is such a beautiful scene and mus😅c from the movie ❤️👍
