I never met a stranger. My kids think I'm strange but most people have a story I haven't heard yet. We love to laugh and tell stories ourselves. Married 53 years , means we have each heard each other's story but strangers hasn't heard it yet. Bonus!
Neat place. How interesting. Husband was aware of the balloons but it was the first time I'd heard of it. Thanks again for increasing our (my) knowledge!
I knew kids in high school that tried the ditch weed and got really sick, it is the hemp that was grown for rope. I like that Chevy. Often people say the Japanese balloons only hit the west coast but they hit other places. When I was a kid I was told a story about a town in Wisconsin that was hit with a balloon and the military burned the town school, church and all. Hope you guys stay safe and healthy.
I just took a trip to Utah to pass down our touring kayaks to our kids. On my way back I turned down a road on a lark, in Eureka, NV. It had the same name as a relative of ours. While I was turning around at the road’s dead end an elderly man stopped. We waved and introduced ourselves and chatted. He knew my deceased relatives and gave me some info, pointed me the right way. It was so heartwarming to run into him and to chat with him. My daughter called it “random” when I told her about meeting him and how nice he was. I don’t think it was random at all…
Nebraska hwy 2 is surprisingly pleasant. Driven it dozens of times. McCook on US 26 is a Nebraska gem. Seems you're traveling part of the varying routes we take when traveling home to KC and STL to visit family and friends.😊
We treasured driving across the sand hill of Nebraska with my Dad B4 he died one more time. Traveled across it regularly in my youth to see my Dad's mom at least yearly in the 50s and 60s. I've read Mari Sandoz as well and loved her version of her father. You can go on the old ranch but none of his fruit trees remain. Valentine had a great university? Book store for paperbacks by NE writers and Iregan Trail diaries.
We have always loved the sand hills of Nebraska. This is one of the friendliest states in the US. The night sky is fabulous, too! Plus, you may get a chance to see the Sandhill cranes.
There's Sandhill Cranes in Alaska too and during the migration pilots have to watch carefully to avoid flying into them. That's deadly for all involved.
Linda mentioned you were traveling on Blue Highways and that reminded me of a book I read by that same title. The author Least Heat Moon tells the story of his travels across America and all the people he encounters sort of like you and Linda! A great book if you haven't read it!
Wonderful video, with so much to learn. I had heard about balloons being sent over by the Japanese during WW2 but I didn't know they made it all the way to Nebraska! Linda your reading of the Mari Sandoz sign was really well done. Thank you.
@@gonagain I'm so glad you two are willing to share your life with us here. It is comfortable "traveling with you." Please continue, I'd miss your sweet smiles and calming voices.

I recently found your videos. My father traveled all over the US and Mexico starting in about 1910. He started taking me long when I was 6(in the 40s).we camped all over Your travels remind me of those great days traveling and camping what now would be the 'back roads'.Thank You. AL

This video was the first time I’ve noticed Rick’s earring. We just got back from a tent camping weekend. It was enjoyable but a muddy mess. It was a monsoon when we were trying to pack things up
For a minute, I thought about the book: Man Called Horse and the movie! But then realized it was written by someone else! I learned a few things this morning; thanks!
Nice video Rick & Linda, That old store in Nebraska is my kind of store, love it! Thanks for reminding me to pick up a new water filter. I really like that knife sharpener, I may have to buy one. JT
So, thanks to you guys, I went ahead and purchased the RO Filter. And the discount worked! And although I do RV camping I also enjoy tent camping. Thanks for sharing guys! Stay safe!!! BTW, as always, loved your video!
Love your videos. I've spent most of my life on the road (trucking). I took every opportunity I could to visit the rural areas. I am a talker, don't know what a stranger is.. The education I received cannot be taught in any university. Safe travels to "y'all" as we say in the south.
Hemp! Much of the Midwest was once hemp plantations, used extensively for canvas, rope, textiles, and livestock feed. I just picked up a Sawyers twin-pack from the Clearance Isle at a local Wally-World. A great deal at twenty two bucks.

No, Walmart sells bulk filtered water. I just take my 5 gallon containers in and fill them. The cost is .29 - .39 cents per gallon, depending on the location. The dispenser is usually in the very front or the back of the store.
Too bad you didn't take the highway 20 route, you missed some of the most beautiful country in nebraska. The Niobrara river valley should have been on your list.
The train reminded me of Hobo Shoestring. I looked at his site to see if he was on the train, but it looks like he is in Alaska. I wonder why Ukraine doesn't use balloons on Russia.

Hello Clara. Yes, you back flush them once in awhile with clean water. They all come with instructions on how to do that.
The primary intent for the Japanese incendiary balloons was to start forest fires or any fire for that matter. A few fatalities were recorded.

How do you get water at Walmart?
OTC?
No, Walmart sells bulk filtered water. I just take my 5 gallon containers in and fill them. The cost is .29 - .39 cents per gallon, depending on the location. The dispenser is usually in the very front or the back of the store.
Too bad you didn't take the highway 20 route, you missed some of the most beautiful country in nebraska. The Niobrara river valley should have been on your list.
We've been down highway 20 in the past and it's beautiful.
If you travel down (or up) I-65, I can give you a free place to camp and free power as long as you need it. ed
Thank you, Ed, appreciate the offer very much.
The train reminded me of Hobo Shoestring. I looked at his site to see if he was on the train, but it looks like he is in Alaska. I wonder why Ukraine doesn't use balloons on Russia.
These days they're using drones I guess.
Hey❤using up my data up to watch youse😘 cuz we are on the road! Oh, I wanna see all these places you've been, ur the Best🏆Tour guides😂😍🙋♀️🛻🇨🇦‼️😊
It looks like you can come down this way now that the big restriction has been lifted. It's been lonely down here without the Canadians!
What is in FL other than adventure?
We're finding out now. For one thing, bugs!
@@gonagain and lots of them! You’re gonna wanna watch out for those 8 foot long bugs in the water too! 🤔😱🤣
Store guy needs to READ THE ROOM! Wow… “Jap” balloon? Really ignorant
I caught that, also. Made me cringe!
😆
Cute tongue there girly.
I wonder how he refers to people of color, or different religions (that are not his own)?
I know. What a dick. That's exactly the kind of person I do NOT to run into in my travels. Let alone patronize his store.
@Mr. Kim The store owners said "Japs" when referring to the Japanese WW2 terror balloons. It was a common slur during and directly after WW2
That’s cheap enough
McCook is where another RUclipsr, Donze52 lives.
