We Brake For Pie! Unless our brakes aren't working...

- Pie Town, New Mexico... is it for real? We stopped at the Pie-O-Neer restaurant to find out. We also had a brake failure that we had to find way to deal with while traveling, but still managed to make an incredible hike with an amazing discovery. Our little cargo trailer camp trailer is making these trips possible and relatively inexpensive.

This was a good one.
So many people spend their golden years sitting in front of the television screen complaining about their health problems. You folks on the other hand get out and enjoy what life has to offer. We really enjoy sharing these adventures with you.
Thank you so much.
Thanks, Keith.
The 😊Pie Of Life
“Uncle Martin,” lol, boy, does that bring back memories of watching, “My Favorite Martian,” on a B/W TV.
Beautiful area with ancient native American artifacts...like how you all roam around the areas you camp in...learning all the time...thx
Absolutely love these videos… I love that you found those petroglyphs very exciting!!! I envy you both! Oh and that pie 🥧 😋
What absolutely amazing finds! From pies to pictographs! Can't wait to get out there next Spring and do some exploring of my own. Thank you for another great adventure. Happy trails!
You're going to have fun if you like what we do. Maybe we'll see you down the road somewhere.
I love the story by Louis Lamour Trail to Pie Town
I might have that one on the shelf.
I'm glad both breaks worked!
Us too!
I love when I can have my coffee with you two. Loved that video, thank you.
Now I want pie. You probably know this but, most of the time when they inspect your breaks, they should remove the wheels, and make sure to check both the inside and outside pads. If you have uneven pad wear, they may not see it because they only look at the pad that's easy to see. If one pad is wearing faster than the other, make sure to check for sticking caliper slides, lube all hard wear, and slide pins when replacing the pads. If the caliper piston or slides on the opposite side are hanging up, it will cause premature pad failure on the other side, so make sure that all pads are wearing evenly. If front calipers hang up, they will cause a pull to one side, because one wheel is stopping faster than the other. Fronts wear a little faster than rears, so expect to see them wear out first unless you leave on the e-brake and burn up the rear pads. Some have shoes for the e-brake that use a drum that is part of the rotor. They last a long time because they are only used for the e-brake system. Less likely is brake hose failure when they collapse on the inside and restrict flow. Good luck, and take care guys, Mike GM/ASE Master Technician.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge, Mike. Appreciate it.
That's it for you two! You
Love your fresh home
Made Pie!!!
That campsite with the petroglyphs was wonderful. I want to go stay there a couple of days. Thanks for producing this excellent video and sharing with us.
What an awesome exploration. I enjoyed that very much.
You're the apple pie of my eye!
I suggest you could buy a set of pads and replace the failed pad until you get home. The rotor should easily last unless it lost a lot of mass.
I just love when you take us exploring 😍 I feal like a child again-eager to learn....show me..I wanna see 😘🥰 Many blessings to the two of you, Iris 👋
Thank you, Iris!
Good morning Linda and Rick. I enjoyed your visit to Pie Town…I completely agree with your recommendation on the pies…they wonder!
We were so surprised when we were able to meet you at Valley of Fire. You two are just wonderful people.
Phil and Dorothy
Hello Phil and Dorothy! Hope to see you both again.
Good morning Rick and Linda! Tax deductible pie?! Now that's really living😅 . Great video as always. We are thankful the breaks didn't go out on the 4 lane or something! The petroglyphs were amazing. Hope you have a happy fourth of July🎉 see ya next week.
Rick and Linda fantastic show. I love New Mexico. I hope to tour this area and south to Silver City next spring on the way home from Quartzite. The petroglyphs were amazing . Thank you and safe travels.
I'd call that a major find. I like that you took the time to examine it along with some speculative analysis.
More than likely the pottery sherds you found was ancient Pueblo, 1100 to 1300 ce. Many peoples migrated in that period in that area. And the panel indicates occupancy. Might be at a site on top of hill. The amount of pottery indicates major place of living of Ancient Pueblo peoples, great find! 😊
Getting out and adventuring...that's the life👍
🤙That's right!
About 40 years ago I had a buddy who lived for years in Arizona, and he had a huge collection of Native American artifacts. That was back in the days when everyone kept what they found. He said he had the best luck in hitting areas where bigger encampments, or villages were located, and he found those by first finding the lookout positions which surrounded the village. I seem to remember he mentioned four lookouts per encampment, so he'd find most or all of them then do his major search central to them. I'm guessing that you found one of those guard outposts on the little hill!
We always try to think about the lookout/scout position and then look to try to determine where the rest of the folks would be. It makes our hikes that more interesting and fun.
Just love your videos, adventures, even the breakdowns! Always something to learn , explore and enjoy with two of the best people! Just love how you have invited us along! Drive safe kids !
Glad you like them! Thank you for coming along on our adventures, you're good company.
Love my favorite Martian glyph. Thank you for showing the right way to view and explore these amazing sites so others can enjoy.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Too bad you couldn't get your car fixed in Pie Town. YUM .Very interesting, guys. Travel safely. Thanks for sharing.
I guess I'm going for some pie in NM...no Peach Cobbler in Ga.😁.
Very interesting and scenic hike! Wow!
I am surprised that for a Guy who repaired a transmission camping brakes would be a gravy job! Yep, those caliper mounting bracket bolts are tight. I carry my Milwaukee 1/2" impact just for those reasons. Old hands are weak so I compensate. And always have a piece of pipe in tool kit.
This was a great video. I mean that. Pie and History. Come on. How much better can it get?
Glad to see Linda has recovered as well as she has. True Warriors Heart. It's wasn't easy terrain there.
I'm adding my cheater bar into the kit for sure. I like your idea of the impact wrench, I carry one, but it's not powerful enough.
You both totally amaze us, all what you find and show us is really great.😊
Thanks so much!
Hello Gonagain!!!! I'm really enjoying catching up on your videos....not only for the beautiful views....but you are very knowledgeable. THANK YOU ❣️❣️,(Anne Marie)
Glad you like them!
I'll have a slice of 1040. My wife will have a slice of Schedule D with Capital Loss Carryover. ;)
Beautiful country.
Amazing. To bad you didn't have your Hover to check out the top. Thanks for the ride.
I'm too old now but I seriously thought about biking the Continental Divide Trail about 8 years ago .. they have a race every year that starts in Cochrane Alberta Canada and ends at the Mexican Border ... it takes about 2 weeks to complete but I figured I could of done it in a month back then without completly ruining what's left of my body ... I know exactly the Caliper Bolts you're referring to and what works for me is not a Cheater Bar but a "Rubber Mallet" ... put the box end of the wrench on the bolt and steady it with one hand and give it a whack with the Rubber Mallet ... a Hammer will not work because the shock is transferred to your hand and the wrench will come off ... a Rubber Mallet works perfect because it has just enough Shock Absorbstion and Weight ... that's always my "Go To Tool" first in tight places ... used it probably 50 times and always works ... you can even tighten bolts back on that way ... an easy to pack Impact Tool ..
Thanks for that tip on the rubber mallet, I can see how that would work. I saw a couple of guys do that Continental Divide route on a pair of Honda 90s.
What an adventure! Loved seeing the beauty of the landscape and also your finds.
Some of those larger flakes were used for cleaning hides and Bone
Very nice adventure! And I myself always look forward to pie...
I will take a slice of that sweet coconut chess. Sounds delicious! Break downs are never fun. But it’s bound to happen with all the travels we do. Just gotta fix it so we can keep exploring. Cool petroglyphs. And love the view.
Wish we could have had one of each!
Great adventure in N.M. Love ya both and the best show. Cannot believe better half is able to walk on the ankle so well.
She's a toughie and a quick healer.
The tool at 33:10, tools like that, are usually called scrapers. At least that's what they were called in the archeology class I had.
That's right, they were called scrapers. Thanks for watching, Dave!
Some more outstanding finds!
If those sticks figures are considered art then maybe I can call myself an artist. I can draw almost that good. Lol
I'd just like to know what they are depicting.
Thx for sharing this incredible area with artifacts and glyphs .
OMG! You found Pie HEAVEN! Worn out brakes are a sure sign of braking for pie often!
What a fun and beautiful place you've explored! Thanks for taking us along.
Wish I had kept track of your previous Pie stops. I’m writing this one down for sure. It’s important to know where there is good pie. Have you ever thought about making a pie stop compilation? It’s not about the destination, it’s about the pie!
Now you have to watch our previous videos again to write down the pie stops.
3:21 my plates LOL. The plates your pie was served on are in my cupboard 😂 gorgeous landscape and petroglyph find! 29:07
Such a great day, nice discoveries
That piece of pottery at 32:00, has a rectangle on it, interesting.
What a wonderful adventure. Love it.
what exceptionally great fines. the pie too! you guys are amazing! travel mercies. continued blessings! 🕊
Thanks so much!
Those panels! What a find! Safe journey. 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻🤙🏻
We went to Pietown a couple of years ago after reading the article in the New Mexico travel guide and were really excited about it. It was closed and for sale. We were really disappointed. Must be something about NM and Chevy rear brakes. I had to replace our Suburban rear brakes while camped at a hang gliding site near Queen ,west of Carlsbad. Beautiful country.
Highway 53 south out of Grants, NM on I-40 west of Albuquerque, NM. Free camping with a great hike around the pool that is the only source of water for 20+ miles and has carvings dating back before the pilgrims arrived in the country in 1620. Good luck and Godspeed!
I'm making a note of that, Jack, thank you! ~~Linda
Awesome, thanks for sharing, you two are a blessing because I've always wanted to travel out west and see the things you show us,thanks and have a blessed day
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching our videos.
The Hopi mention ant people helping them long ago. The petroglyph next to the deer reminded me of that.
Yeah, I wonder what they were referring to?
@@gonagain According to Hopi legend, the ant people hid the Hopi underground to protect them from the flood that destroyed the 3rd world. Flood? Interesting parallels.
I might be willing to risk the snakes, spiders, and scorpions to visit Pie Town. Sorry about your brakes. Any unexpected car expense stinks but it’s an easy & quick repair for the shop
It was for the shop and we're happy with the work and the bill.
And you went through Fence Lake NM. Problem is, there is no lake. I once stayed in Fence Lake a very desolate desert like area
Same thing happened to me,Sounds like your brakes are grinding, the rotor gets scored and you hear that screeching from a metal tab that rubs the rotor when the pads are worn down ,it's time to change your pads.
I'm having the exact same brake problem right now that you had. It will be fixed today, June 30th.
Now, this is entertainment! What a great video. And that pie? Had to strap on my drool cup watching you guys eating that pie. Be blessed on your travels.
I'm with Linda, a beautiful valley and a place I'd settle in also. Fabulous finds.
Thanks for watching!
Super Video guys. Your diligence pays off!
Beautiful place. Added the Pie o neer to my list hope to make it there. Apple pie is great with a scoop of great ice cream on it. Stay safe and healthy.
Yes it is and I just put on a pound by just thinking about it.
You guys, What Treasures ,the hike the relief drawings, c cave shelters, pottery shards the brake pieces.... woops ok not the brake pieces.Your in great shape Linda brave 4WD that ankle.Thank you for respecting the land and others Taboos Now let's eat pie !
We hope to go back and do more exploring. And have more pie.
"The beer bottle that lead to that!" Now I have something to blame on my crazy behavior 😂
Wow I almost shorted out my phone, drooling over the pie 🥧🤣🤣 I hope to make it to there next trip out to New Mexico 😋🤞☘️ happy trails to y'all
Sometimes you have to bite the bullet and be ready to spend when you have to that waty they can check your front pads too
Thank you so much for slowly going over this petroglyphs. I saw a bunch of things in there that you guys missed. I was excited to come along for the fun.
I love watching you guy’s adventures. I retire from the fire department December of 2024 and I hope to go out west. I have never been out there. I hope to meet you folks someday. Take care and love you both.
We hope to meet you someday, too.
Great Video!! (we are learning to expect nothing less from you and Linda hahahaha). Bummer with your breaks, when we were in a jam we used another wrench as a cheater bar. Hopefully you found an honest mechanic along your route. Stay Safe!!
Thanks, Karen, we took a chance and had the work done by a brake shop. And we're happy with the work; the total bill was less than the estimate.
Always learning something new.
Always!
Watch for rattlers Rick and Linda. That looks like prime territory for them.
Thanks for the warning. There were also signs in places to be aware of the rattlesnakes.
You had me at the thread title! and I'm posting just 4 mins into the vid to say I CANNOT WAIT! to be travelling, towing my lil 5 X 10 and then STOPPING FOR PIE! omfng. For some reason it all seems too good to be true. LOL.
Happy trails!
Glad y’all got to have the pie at Pie Town. We tried to go in December and they were closed. But we will try again next time we are out that way.
Hope everything goes smoothly with the brake fix.
Thank you, the brake fix went smoothly and we are satisfied that it was done well.
Interesting findings… I enjoy this video vary much
Glad you enjoyed it!
So great to meet you guys on your travels through Pie Town - keep on trucking down the road! Pj x
Thank you! Will do! Hope we meet up with you somewhere, sometime PJ! aloha~~Linda
Pie Heaven..no doubt you would find that place 🤣👍
From one pie lover to another!
@@gonagain I went to Steve's in Helena. Cream cheese filled French toast with Huckleberry syrup 😁
Of course finding pie while traveling is a total tax deduction! You have thousands of subscribers taking notes, marking maps, and setting way points to the best pie stops! HOWEVER, you did not catch me off guard this time! I know all about PIE TOWN. It makes the CDT torture worthwhile, even in the brutal desert heat. A time honored tradition to set the pace to overnite there for many. I have it marked and check it every hiking video I watch. I'll get there on the next western trek! You hit the bonanza bonus jackpot with that pie stop!
And we met and chatted with the nicest young man doing the CDT while having pie.
Great video and WHAT A GREAT FIND....Keep on exploring and keep sharing with those of us that can not go places for whatever reason.
Thank you! Will do!
Honey pecan sounds great!
It was amazing.
Best of luck with the brake repair. What an amazing find…petroglyphs.
Hope to meet you both down the road sometime 🤞☘️ Good luck with the brakes
Welcome to NM. We're just north of Albuquerque. Have Pie Town on our list. Got home from El Morro, near Grants. We got our renovations done on our cargo trailer and wanted to go test it out. Next month we're off to Jemez Falls. We love traveling around to the Nat'l Parks.😊
Blessings and stay safe. 🤗🦋
Pie Town was definitely worth the stop! We thought of going to El Morro but it didn't work out that way. Next time!
@@gonagain Well worth the trip all those inscriptions and petroglyphs from so long ago. Fascinating.🤗
You should make a top 10 pie’s video for each year. Thanks for sharing.
I think what the real story with the toilet is:
A hermit that had lived in the area since the 1950s, just living off the land, and never having any amenities, except those he made himself from natural resources, finally decided to treat himself in his waning years and walked the 100 miles to town with his old mule nugget. There, he traded off his only thing of value: his grandfather's Colt Single Action Army 44-40. For a brand-spanking new toilet.
He trudged the hundred miles back to his homesite, mule exhausted from years of toil, barely making it back. But, alas, he had a shiny new toilet which he set out in the brush, comfort to be had each day.
Then some “Slimeball” came by and shot it.
better story than mine :)
Well....it could be it happened that way.
Great finds
I really enjoy your videos….when I travel it’s all about the pie stops too
Thanks for watching! And enjoying pies!
Great find, thanks for the journey
Thanks for coming along!
good stuff......
Thanks!
Shortening is used a lot more than lard anymore Rick.
I know, it was a flash from my past when lard was used in pie crusts. But you know, it tasted good!
So very interesting ! Thanks
I'm sure this is going to be history now, but excessive inner pad wear is a red flag for a caliper piston freezing up. I love the locations you find. I hope I'll be half as successful when the time comes.
Thanks for the input, Sean.
Man that pie sure looked good..both of them 😋👍
Oh yeah!
Oh my! Well first let me say how sad I am that I couldn't have sent you to one of my husband's family tire shops that would be much closer than Utah. 😢 That said, wow! What a totally cool adventure!😲😁 All that pottery was awesome enough, but then you hit the jackpot!! I was so amazed! Can only imagine what a thrill that must have been for your two!! Pie Town sounded lovely till you said lard. But that NM apple pie did sound interesting. 😋 Hope everything got taken care of with the brakes or whatever was going on.🙏
Hello Wanda, I just said lard because it was used in pie crusts in the old days. My grandpa refused to ever try margarine because he thought it contained lard. Once he ate margarine by mistake and went out and threw it all up. He was illiterate and couldn't read the label.
@@gonagain that's ok, but I don't eat margarine either as it's like one molecule frome being plastic. It's butter or nothing for me, so needless to say I don't eat out much. Glad to hear he was opposed to lard. Folks don't realize how many health problems come from eating pork nor do they realize how much pork byproducts are in so many of our processed foods. Sometimes it's really hard to eat right. And now they want to push synthetic meats and bugs into our foods! Oy vey!🤣 But you are correct, back in the day lard is often all the people had because butter was hard to come by. But I am sure curious about that green chili apple pie! 😋
The pies from Pie-O-Neer are wonderful and my favorites are the blueberry and the apple with green chile. Always your videos with a look at the countryside. Nice that you put the pottery shards back where you found them. 😀
You can slip a bigger wrench closed end over the wrench your using and it becomes your cheater bar
Closed end over the open end of the wrench your using
Glad you had a great pie in Pie Town. Did you get to the smaller Cafe run by the Hawaiian lady next door? She served my son and I the Ohana (spelling) pie just before she and her husband were to open the cafe back in spring of '22.
Next time. Gives us a reason to go back sooner.
Nice video Rick,
The pies looked great, and the campsite was awesome.
Sorry about your brakes. On the bright side, at least your GMC has disk brakes. My GMC pickup is a HD 3/4 ton, it has disk in the front, and drums in the back. You have to pull the rear axle on my truck to do a brake job on the rear brakes.
My first Suburban had drums on the rear. Disc brakes are definitely better. I hope you two are doing well!
I have stopped there a few times, still have the coffee cup, “ It’s all downhill from here “
Next time we'll try the other cafe, the Ohana Diner? Linda didn't see it until we pulled away from the Pie O Neer.
@@gonagain I think the Pie O Neer is a little better
Another terrific video.
Thank you! ~~Linda
What a great find! Beautiful view. What do you guys pack in your backpack when on a hike?
It varies on the area, but mainly water and a couple of energy bars, space blanket and large neckerchief, first aid kit, compass and GPS (with satellite communicator), fire starting kit, small container of deet, lightweight rainjacket/wind breaker and other things we feel we might need on a particular hike. Oh, can't forget camera gear!
👍👍👍
Plus, something to push the caliper piston back in, a pain.
Yeah, there's that too. I would have probably made something to handle that, but I'm throwing my cheater bar into the the kit!
Sometimes a big C clamp, sometimes needle nose pliers for ones you have to press and turn like a screw.
