Thank you. I loved seeing how much rock was used in constructing foundations and retaining walls - good way to make use of the rock they had to move while mining. Some of the wood on those old buildings was cut so straight - makes the stuff at Home Depot look poor by comparison. I'm so glad your camera makes the signs clear enough for me to read them - even on pause - which I cannot say about my own camera. Good job all around!

We just stumbled across this place twelve years ago on a road trip. It was spring and there was still snow on the road. Took a risky chance driving up there in a rented RAV4. What a great time. I went into an old cabin near the bottom and found a 1951 newspaper still lying on a table. I use one of my photos for a screen saver. When we were there both the little cabins were standing but the one was in pretty rough shape and I see it has collapsed now.

You talked about how hard it was in the winter, living in a house with no insulation. It reminded me of a paperback I read, I believe it is: Mollie: The Journal of Mollie Dorsey Sanford in Nebraska and Colorado Territories, 1857-1866.
It's considered one of the most accurate books on pioneer life. In it, she describes how they moved to Denver and her husband worked at the mine. If I remember the book right, she said that Denver only had 3000 people at the time, and their first place was in a cave with a wooden front and a blanket to keep out the winter wind. I'm thinking a blanket over the doorway in the mountains in the dead of winter is a little on the roughing-it side.

I love seeing the old places. I just wish that the buildings were still standing. I can’t imagine working with a steam shovel. They had to have been hard to operate. I have worked on a 30-B dragline before but that would be easy in comparison to operating the steam shovel.

My kind of video, and my kind of road!
Thanks for mentioning that ghost towns were not destroyed, but they were recycled. Now I get to use my imagination!
I’m surprised at the “permit” move by Montana.
I had a good lunch in a Philipsburg cafe about ten years ago. Quiet little town. Do I need to buy a permit to park on the street now?

Montana's State Parks require a permit or a fee to use. The town of Phillipsburg itself isn't part of the Granite ghost town. You can still get a great lunch there, and don't forget the bakery or the candy store!

I forget the name of the ghost town between Lincoln and Ovando. Is it Garnet? I believe so. 😅

Years ago, my brother was the Sherriff of Granite County. My ex and I went there and took our CJ jeep up to the town and mines. It looks a lot the same except it is more overgrown than it was when we were there. At that time, you could drive everywhere up there and we did. Also, there wa sno signs at all and it was not a museum. It was just a ghost town. One of the buildings we found was an assay office and it had core samples in it from the mine. It was very interesting. And no there was no private areas either. Although we did not come across the shaft at that time.
And that carved are you called a root cellar, could have been an Icehouse., They would carve ice out of ponds and put it in a tunnel in the ground or in a building with thick walls. The walls would be filled with sawdust for insulation, and they would put in the ice and put sawdust and straw between the blocks so that when a block was removed, the block behind it would not melt. My ex and I had a home down by Elkhorn Hot Springs that had an old Icehouse behind it. Ours was in a tunnel carved into the earth. Outside it was a huge pile of sawdust they had used for it.
You see those granite block walls with the big gaps in them and then think of the block walls in the pyramids in Egypt with no gaps and seams that you can't slide a piece of paper in and marvel at that accomplishment thousands of years ago.
When in mining ghost towns, always look under the door stoops. Miners were known to hide gold and silver or other valuables under them.
Great video and thank you for taking me down memory lane!

I'm glad it was you and not me going up that steep narrow road. We just made a trip through some hilly country and I was a nervous wreck. Shame on you for holding the camera and driving!

I've been to a ghost town long time ago outside of Anaconda. I looked Granite on Wikipedia, very fascinating and an excellent episode.

I wonder if the first fortified building was a jail cell?

    • @gonagain
      @gonagain  Год назад +1

No, I think these were vaults. We've seen many of the jail cells from that era and they were usually made of sheet iron and wood and are still standing. Nasty places that would cure most drinking problems.

On the map you showed, it doesn't look like it's too far from the Bitterroot Valley?
Biggest mistake people make when heading down off a mountain like that is they ride their brakes all the way down, instead of using the lower gears in their vehicles.
Very cool exploration video, I really enjoyed it. Ghost Towns are some of Jo-Ann and I's favorite places to visit.

Yeah, it's just east of the Bitterroot.
