- I have heard many stories and rumours that this train exists, but I wasn't sure I believed them. The famous 17 km long train tunnel, under passing three glaciers and an entire mountain, built to get oar and people safely to and from the site, is a story that many don't know. The tunnel itself has been sealed at each end for 40 years now, but it served a great purpose in its time, and at the time was a world famous achievement. The fact that there was an access from that conveyor shaft into the train tunnel is a wild coincidence, and the fact that the train was right there is even more. I wish I had a better light with me this day, but it was one of those things you just cant plan for. And let's face it, a GoPro is not the ideal camera for the situation. Never the less, it was amazing to see this in person.

I worked at Granduc in the 1980s. The road tunnel you went through was used in the winter to bypass a very avalanche prone stretch of road. Even though they had a full time avalanche management crew, this part of the road was just to dangerous. To use the tunnel, they had to keep the ice out of it as you saw. They did this by installing a diesel generator at one end. It supplied power to 2 large oil fired furnaces that kept the water from freezing. There was also a large door that kept the cold wind from blowing through the tunnel. The green locomotive was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. They were 1500VDC electric locomotives. I did electrical maintenance work on them and on the road tunnel as well. The tunnel you followed down to the train was a conveyor galley that brought the ore from the ore dump up to the mill building. The conveyor was designated 180602 if I remember correctly. I walked that galley a few times as well.

The broken glass cylinder at 11:40 is fillled with silica beads. They are a desiccant to ensure the power transformer can vent air when hot but not draw in moist air when it cools. The power transformer has all those metal pipes to allow the insulating/cooling oil to naturally convect and dissipate heat.

So many times I have explored that tunnel but have never been brave enough to make it to the end. Once again making me homesick, thanks for sharing my home town.
The engine is a mitsubishi electric, the cars are 50 or 100 ton side dump ore cars. (If memory serves me. ) the camp looks like its on the old mill site lower pad.
How is the tunnel for travel? rough? What made you turn around?
I spent many yrs doing this , now to I’ll , not ur channel kept me going , when quacks says it my time lol, don’t feel Srry I had best times in live doing this and ur channel awesome , would like to see if can get out ur way sum time, leave u bit money or stuff to keep going and give many people pleasure I had from these streams big thanks

Man, I give you tons of credit for going in that tunnel alone! That train was a mega cool find. My son is a huge train buff, and I can’t wait to show him this…great stuff as always!

When he said “I’ve only heard stories about this but didn’t believe it existed” I assumed he was talking about the train tunnel itself. I was NOT prepared for a whole LOCOMOTIVE????? To just be buried underground behind and metal door.

The second door you found when you went into that conveyer tunnel is a mine train/locomotive. it had a "back hoe" loader mounted on the side of it and it was mean for loading the main train that hauled the raw ore out of the mine. plus a liquid cooled generator you found on the other side of the train hanger doors. when they finished and closed the mine, removing the equipment is far too expensive to do unless they had another mine to take it too, so they locked up the loader locomotive with a few of the decent cars that remained in good condition in case they ever found another ore bearing deposit in the region. which is likely who hired the exploration company that you found at the lower plateau. Once another decent deposit is found the company will go back into that mine and remove those locomotives and put them to use in the next mine. if they don't find anything in the region, then they will write off the equipment and simply leave it in the mine to rot for ever. it's how the big corporations do things. I knew a guy who was a middle man for those big corporations that found equipment for them to buy and made the exchange possible and he made more money than kings and emperors and retired a multi-millionaire at the age of 36! moved to Bahamas and also had a villa in the French Riviera as well as more Women and Super Cars than you could shake a stick at! Haven't heard anything of him since he left Canada for warmer climes, the lucky duck, but luck had nothing to do with his fortunes, he was a very smart business man, hence his retirement at 36! After watching more of your video, that train is already a write-off at more than 33,000 hours!!! SO it will sit in there fore ever more.
Now how cool was that, I’ve heard of finding watches, cameras and even cars but a whole train? This is why we watch these videos, you are living our dreams of exploring, many of us don’t have the time or resources to do something like this but you bring our dreams to our homes. What a day of adventures- riding your bike in a tunnel that's filled with ice at the end, going underground and finding a train (bet those folks who put it there thought they would be the last to see that train. Nope, not when Dustin is hunting up "lost treasures") and running into two grizzly bears on the way back to the Adventure Rig. What an exciting day.
I was up there in 1987 working in mineral exploration for the summer. We drove down the power tunnel and got 90% of the way through until blocked by ice like you were. Some of us walked the last bit but the driver had to back up all the way down the tunnel. It seems that end of the tunnel always has ice in it.

Finding the old train is like finding gold what a find
Granduc was legendary, and being Hyderized (Everclear grain alcohol) in Hyder, Alaska was part of the ritual en route from Stewart, BC.
Never sit on the left side of the bus after a few beers in Hyder, since it is a sickening straight drop down to the glacier.
Thanks for pointing out that they need to seal the conveyor tunnel as well. The train was standard gauge railway, and not a toy... lol
Man you have steel ones! Going into a shaft without an air test.......I have worked in mining a number of years ago, open pit, conventional cut and fill as well as ramp. That is some old stuff. The broken glass unit on the transformer was most likely for Moisture Management. Great tour and love the wheels, both electric and diesel!
I know a guy who drove that train. They ran a locomotive and the front, and at the end of the train. The train shuttled cars back and forth. They had a driver in both units, one for forward operation and one for reverse operation. They communicated with signal bells and the signals were all recorded in the office. The guy I know is colour blind and could only tell what colour the rail lights were by seeing if the bottom or top light was on. He ran it for years and no one knew. He also told me that one trip the other operator fell asleep and plowed into the wood barrier at the end of the rail line. Just for good measure the guy ran the bell for stop, because it was all recorded. Cool that you found it. I knew it was seal in the tunnel but didn’t know there was access to it.

I kept thinking yeah I’d rather have a partner with me while exploring underground, it would take nothing to slip and end up smashing a knee against that train. And who knows whether or not you’re going to get cell reception underground, doubt the guys renting out that site would hear you or know where you are

Awesome Dustin!! I've discovered and explored a bunch of old rail culverts/ tunnels......but I've NEVER EVER EVER found anything like an actual engine and cars in any of them!! Total electric. No diesel fumes in tunnels!! Awesome awesomeness!!!! Thanks for another adventure!
Heavy equipment operator here, 5000 hours is considered "a lot" now, seeing 36 000 hours on a machine, damn that things got stories

Crazy discovery is an understatement!! Wow!! I would not have made it past the first 10 feet at the beginning and I would have missed that awesome train! I'm anxious to learn what the train was for. Were they mining, and if so, what for? Were they just making a shorter passage? Why did they leave it in the tunnel? Such an intriguing video - thanks Dustin!
Best guess for leaving it? It was probably on orphan track. Unconnected to any other rail line, and it would cost money to disassemble it and pack it out. It happens to a lot of equipment like trains and tunnel boring machines.

My wife and I were there earlier this month. We stopped at that tunnel and had a gander inside but it was a big hell no to venturing in there. Salmon Glacier, holy what a majestic sight, the mozzies were brutal though.

I’m finally able to watch this vid and I catch myself experiencing claustrophobia, taking deep breaths, and saying “no, don’t go in there!!” but I was as curious as you, and glad you showed it to us. I was amazed at the great condition it’s in. And I couldn’t wait for you to get the hell out of that tunnel! Beautiful scenery again, I love those glaciers. Looking forward to the next one…

That grey equipment with lots of tubes is probably an electrical transformer. The glass part is to show the oil level as they are oil cooled. (I think). Another great video thanks. Watching from the UK and envy your travelling to places like this.

how brave of you to go inside that tunnel and make it so far. I would had felt lost for sure at some point but before that claustrophobia would had defeated me. And that grizzly meeting was also nerve-wrecking.
