My biggest thing with the 9-5 grind is the fact that you’re limited on time off, vacation days, etc. I’d rather make less money and be able to take whatever time off I wanted. Time is more valuable than money

After working my ass off for 15+ years, pursuing higher education at age 30, did everything they tell us to do to reach a better life, I'm dead in the water - still in poverty and with 2 children with special needs, miserable. Bro you’re definitely not crazy. I grew up in a state run foster home with nothing. Went to college, got out and started making 130k a year. Always thought money bought happiness, but it’s definitely not true. I work so much that I can’t even enjoy the money I make. I’ve got 160k saved and what I’ve come to realize is once you can cover your basic needs - shelter/food/gas, everything else is just extra. Do we need to sacrifice our life’s at work for extra shxt? Everyone’s answer is different, but for me, I’m learning I’d rather have more free time than money. Nah not really , any "job" where I am a slave to a team of supervisors and managers, forced to clock in the same minute every day sounds like prison. I’m 44 male with wife and kid. I moved back in with my parents after living in Asia for 11 years. I started doing uber/lyft as a way to get by until I found work but I’m in the same boat. I can’t go back to the 9-5. The freedom of deciding when to work or not matters more the older I get. I currently live with my parents and pay for the 1200 mortgage payment plus food so that they can retire off their shitty social security. I get to spent more time with my aging parents and my wife/son. It’s a win win situation for everyone even though my living situation is frowned upon by western standards. I’m happy

Im 31 and only tried working a 9-5 in two different jobs. I had a near nervous breakdown. From that I learned to live off my earnings from what i made working 25 or so hours a week. People may look down upon me but I have to put my mental and physical health first.
Man this video is so relatable. There are so many ways that you can make money online its actually crazy. The hardest part for me is taking action which Im finally doing right now, I've been researching for too long....TOO LONG. My biggest mistake was asking other people (friends, family) if I should do this or that and they always look at me like I'm crazy or stupid absolutely no faith at all and that made me mad so hopefully it works and I PROVE them wrong that its actually possible.

I was too overwhelmed when I was younger and wasted so much time and my body to hard work at a 9-5. I was the one telling the people I worked with back at McDonalds, taht I was going to be making big money in a year after I quit. I tried and failed because I was too overwhelmed and just didn't have the skills or know-how. I've always wanted to run an online business. No more waiting though. I'm changing my situation this year.
Never related to a video so much in my life. Worked a 9-5 for a few years after I graduated college and absolutely hated it with every ounce of my being.. I quit it in order to do doordash/ubereats until I figure out my next move. Sure, I'm making less money, but at least I'm no longer waking up every morning wanting to jump off a bridge.

Why is it normalized to work 8 hours a day ? Why is it normalized that we have to work more than we have days off ? If anything, we should work up to 6 hours a maximum of 3 days a week and get 4 days off, not this BS. Ps I work 12 hours a day, it's torture. One of my friends said he couldn’t face a 9-5 so went into the military and then became a pilot. He loved the outdoors, camping, sports. When he said he was joining the Army, at first, I wondered why, but then realised it was the perfect career for him. Literally ticked all his boxes. One day, he would be practicing strafing using a machine gun on a helicopter. A few months later skiing in the mountains. Next day, he did capture / torture training etc. It was so varied, not just obstacle courses, hikes, shooting on the range. Honestly sounded amazing. The experience changed him as a person, far more those of us who took 9-5’s after college.

Im 33 and im at a point where I'd rather die than to work a plantation (9-5). My last job was at home depot and still couldn't save a substantial amount of money despite how frugal i am, and i mean FRUGAL. Taking out frustration on a manager got me fired and that was it for me. Decided to use my last check to buy and resell products on and offline. With my returns and profits from buying and reselling, made me not only realize how much I'll never work a plantation job ever in my life again, but gave me the discipline to keep it up. Its kinda fun to make your own money, using your own strategies ane skills to get your own money.
Having money provides you with freedom and to do the things you love to do and provide for your family though. Unless you just want to be a bum and live off your parents or something.

It was just what you needed to DO in order to be successful in life and to have all the things people said you needed. I worked my ass off on a number of jobs and landed where I am today. I have a cushy existence with a good salary and I work from home. However I now wish to escape it as it has created a "groundhog day" life for me. Every day is very much the same, and as a person who very much enjoys nature and outdoors, and travel, I realize I have created a Golden Cage scenario for myself... I've built this life that by society's standards is a success, but on a personal level, it causes me distress as it is not what I want to be doing with my life... I hope more younger people like you come to realize that there are other ways of making a living and being happy that do not involve getting into lifelong debt via student loans, then getting shackled to a desk for the rest of their lives to pay them off. No it doesn't. I go out every single night for maybe $20. A pitcher of beer between two people is $15 each. Going to the park and playing music, getting high, walking your dog with a woman..all free. Going out after work to a nice cafe is $5-10. Many nightclubs with live music have no cover or $10. But you have to live in the big city where ya just gotta walk out and find the vibe. The small-town/suburban car lifestyle is no life at all.

Back in 2009 I did the same thing. Got super tired of the 9-5 grind and decided to go into affiliate marketing after seeing some silly ad in my email that said "you can make $300/hr posting links online". Ended up learning so much by considering the possibility that what I saw in that ad could actually happen. I worked for myself as a freelancer doing this type of marketing for 5 years. It's now a skill that EVERY business pays good money for, and if you know your stuff, you can make bank in a corporate environment. Listen to your inner voice. Same happened to me in 1988...ad for 900# business ended up making me RICH AS HELL from age 18 to about 30. I see a few other new niches I'd get into if i was young...a few ultra-modern ideas from china/japan popped up in my city that are really wild and very successful immediately.

As someone who got laid off 6 months ago from a 9-5 job with some overtime days, I have never felt more rejuvenated in my life and motivated enough to pursue a hustle that can serve me financially. I can only salute those who have been doing this for decades in their lifetime.
Find a good partner and have kids around 25 years old. If you don't, you're F'd. And family is way more important than a job or money. And even if you get stuck in a normal job, having kids will make the 9-5 grind worth it. Whereas if you have no kids or partner, nothing you do is worth it because there's no real point.

I know this exact feeling bro, I'm 19 years old and I couldn't handle the thought of going to college and then getting into career that I hate to work 30 plus years. That's exactly why I've been doing couch flipping as my full-time business. I would like to do something online one day but I really enjoy couch flipping at the moment. I hit my first 6k month this month and I am making more than my teachers would make in a month. It's not putting anyone down. After running a successful business abroad for 10 years, I came back to covid America and the fun of the last 4 years. The job market is absolutely cooked. The cost of living is insane now and these jobs all seem so self-degrading. I chose to teach myself 3d modeling and product design. I feel great and enjoy it but am hungry. The term "starving artist" is real.

Please note the emphasis I made on “things I want”. It’s different for everyone. But for me I could work for 10 years straight making $100-150K a year, save every penny and still not comfortably afford my Dream car (A 22’ Ferrari F8 Spider). The math does not work. Yet there are people in their 20s & 30s who have been able to achieve this. Those people did “something else”. They pursued a financial vehicle that allowed them the possibility to obtain their wants “in real time”. Hope that made sense.
I studied Chemical Engineering also and realize that working in this industry to give myself the life I want will be an overkill. I had a similar mentality, too, but after all the psychological and painful studies, I had to get real with myself, and realize that there is better out there for me. There are “9 to 5’s” that are decent. It all depends on the environment and the work you are doing. I was incredibly miserable working a 9 to 5 for years until I was able to find a job working remotely most of the time. That frankly alleviated 70% of the stress of working. I also found a position where I would at least not be overworked and underpaid like I was previously. When you are compensated appropriately and there is a respect for boundaries a 9 to 5 can be a great thing. Also, never underestimate the privilege of employer-sponsored healthcare.
There’s something called the Pareto principle where 80% of work is done by 20% of people. The other 80% of people are mostly playing pretend and doing just 20% of the work collectively. If you’re in that latter group and you know it, you’re balling. The only problem is if you get laid off and have to find a new paycheque. Otherwise, you can really leave the office early and live life without falling behind on anything.
some people dont want to be employees and work under another human(s) being/company and depend on them for their paychecks/to get paid/their livelihood. I worked 9-5s and did gig work for a while, one of them paid $32/hour and was pretty comfy. But at the end of the day if you have a job, youre still required to wake up at certain times, show up at certain times, finish at certain times, interact with people, have certain responsibilities and tasks, answer to other people, etc. Anyway, long story short, I sell weed now, do hedged arbitraging, and trade crypto/stocks. Ive had more money than Ive ever had when I worked "regular" jobs and also do whatever the hell I want when I want. Since I dont have the physical,emotional, and mental burdens and effects of a 9-5 or having to think or care about someone else's business I have more time for myself too, I got absolutely ripped and shredded (alot of time to go to the gym). I really think 9-5s are scams. They scam your time, your other life opportunities, your health, and your money. The 5 years you spent working at some location you could have spent learning a trade or a skill or how to invest money or literally anything else to get you ahead in life for your future. I also think people who are not subservient by nature or personality have a hard time working 9-5s or jobs with superiors/managers/bosses. I can't have people telling me what to do or what time to wake up or what time to show up somewhere, I'd rather be in charge of my own life and dictate my own terms, but make it work for you and find that path. You ain't gonna find it at a 9-5. If you absolutely MUST WORK a 9-5 because you need the money to survive or whatever, my best advice would be to slave that job and save as much as you can from it, and try to make that money work for you so you can get away from that 9-5 life. If youre working a 9-5, you need to delete the ubereats account, netflix account, spotify account, and stop buying the latest iphones because that will make it harder and slower to get out of the 9-5 life if youre also spending what little money you make on the dumbest of items
I would chose to work remotely if I was allowed to be picky. But in person jobs only requiring a high school diploma don't even want to hire me when I have a bachelor's degree. Forget competing against 100+ people for a remote job.

Agreed. My ultimate goal is to start a business but right now I am working a wonderful full time job. I started with my company part time in college as the editors assistant and I was allowed to set my own hours and work from home. I kept track of my hours in paper. When i graduated, i was hired as a full time reporter. Every day i do something different and still work from home half the time. My supervisor, the editor, and big boss are AWESOME. So are my coworkers. No office politics. And they care about me. They work with me when they know i have to visit specialists for my chronic health issues. It doesn't pay the best but you can't beat the flexibility!
What I hate about working is that you are trapped at your job and that you have to be there and do what the boss tells you to do. Life is too short to take bs. Find a better way.

As far as I know, RUclips puts ads on your videos after you hit certain criteria, regardless of whether or not you monetize the videos as a RUclips Partner. Being part of the Partner Program just means you get a cut, but you can't control whether or not the ads show up. Might as well take the cut that you can rightfully claim, even if you choose to redistribute it.

I agree completely. I’m 39 and can’t work a 40 hour week to save my life. I moved to South Korea to teach English. I work 25 hours a week and get paid full time. I make $20k a year but that’s enough to easily live in Korea. I’d rather teach English making $20k then $130k at a real job.

I don't know what country you're in, but most schools in America finish around 2 or 3pm. If you have after school activities or play a sport in school, you maybe practice for 2-3 hours after school (ending around 5pm).

When I was much younger, before I even knew what working a job meant or the prospect of retirement, I watched my parents suffer for years, working long hours, with little vacation for what I now see as minimal pay. No employer can pay you what your worth, so you have to find a way to pay yourself. I am thankful for your content. This video is extremely encouraging, and I totally can relate. I feel you brother. I'm 17 and hate the idea of going to school for so many years, just slaving away your precious years when you're at the peak of your capabilities just for you to end up working a 9-5 for a trash boss you dont even like in which you have to ask from him for permsission to go on vacation, and getting 2 days off only in which you probably sleep for the whole Saturday cuz you're so tired from the previous day and then spending your Sunday scrolling through your phone all day. I know I'm the only one who can change the way I live my daily life and should take 100% responsibilties and actually do whatever it takes to escape the rat race instead of just complaining about how the system is just the way it is but unfortunately, as a teenager who is still living with his parents, it indeed is quite hard to do things the way I want to do them.
I'm twice your age, there was no social media or RUclips like now with all this information. If I can go back in time I would. Good to you learn this young. My generation was told what to do by society's standard and we didn't question it.

I understand how you feel completely a 9 to 5 isnt for me either, i dont get how people work 40 to 50 plus years to retire in their 60's with less than a million dollars. I'm not judging anyone with a job but it just doesnt seem right to me
i like a 9-5 because of the simplicity. while it sucks going to find those jobs, after a job is secured not having to think about work and being able to think purely about what I like doing during the week/weekend is really nice mentally. mad respect for people like you that have the willpower to push themselves to work they way they want to though. also for the YT ads, it used to be how you described it but a few years back they make the ads show up regardless of what you have selected so you might as well have it on.

I work two jobs I’m 25 and I have no time for anything else doing it all by myself and I have a dog ! I cry everyday don’t have time to take care of my own life or my dog . I can’t do this for much longer I’m crumbling .
It’s great you are sharing your story, there are a lot of people like us. I worked various retail 9-5’s for the first 8 years of my working life and didn’t even realize how much I hated it because I just thought that was what I had to do. Last year I started my own dog training business and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been! I’ve already gotten to the same pay range in under a year and my work is much more rewarding getting to help people’s relationships with their dogs!

I actually had no savings, my business luckily had very little startup costs. I did pay a lot of car payments during that time which is a major resource. I am also lucky my family helped pitch in for my training academy which was really my only startup cost. When it comes to hiring someone, I will be investing a lot of time ensuring they train dogs in a way similarly to me, so I will pay them only a slightly lower wage than me to keep them. The competition pays dog walkers/ trainers incredibly low amounts and I wouldn’t want to do that since I worked for one for a while.

I'm almost 41. I've changed around 20 jobs since 2001. Worked as receptionist, waiter, warehouse worker, retailer seller, 24/7. I had some IT courses so then i worked in service desk and help desk jobs and in the end as IT technician. In 2018 i had an "epiphany" (lol) and finally I understood that i will never be able to work regular 9-5 again, especially not office jobs.Looking back i saw that every job i had caused me to feel trapped and sick physically and mentally, and that it was elevating my anxiety and depression. I went to work some occasional night shifts at a "party" hostel after that, just something till i "figure things out". Well, what i figured out is that i don't need to achieve anything but serenity for myself. I gotta stop listening to my peers, family and society and it's norms. I need time, not money. I don't want to have my days dedicated to someone else who dictates when and where i have to be, when to eat and when to pee. I had some savings so i didn't work for 2 years after that. I started doing food deliveries in 2021 and still doing it. Is it a sh** job? Meh, sure. Is money good? Nope. Do I choose when and how much i work? Yes. Does anyone bother me? Nope. Is this perfect solution? Nope. Do I feel better than in any job i had before? F*** yeah! Conclusion: I have no aspirations or plans for having my own business. It would be, again, forcing something unnatural that would make me feel sick again. I do hope that someday i will find something that will inspire me to do some kind of "passion project" that will also generate money. Till then i'm as free as I can be, or at least I feel fine, and that's what matters to me. I hope you all find something. A way out of 9-5, rat race, wage slavery etc. etc. Have a nice day!
@@YoungTooShabby It's not about smarts. I'm assured I'm (without false modesty) smart enough to work in a well paying positions in various areas/branches of economy system. The thing is, I don't have aspirations for hierarchical climbing in corpo world or "grinding" something which doesn't interest me. I tried many jobs as I mentioned and i hope i will find interest in future to invest myself in something personal.
Just make sure you don't have kids who will have to depend on you to survive. The very nature of having kids demands you have regular income that can accommodate their needs otherwise you will only make them and yourself very poor and miserable.

I’ve been working a 9-5 job ever since I graduated college, so I’m coming up 9 years now. I love it, it given me a routine in life . I’m salaried, have benefits and have a great commute to work ;My managers aren’t checking when I come in or leave, if I have to leave early I just do it . Due to Covid a lot of companies have hybrid schedules which I love . I don’t like being home all day and really had to adjust when Covid hit . If you have a 9 to 5 and are feeling unfulfilled then it might be time to leave that company.
My biggest issue is, I have always had a job, I’m a hard worker. But I switch jobs a lot. I cannot understand how people do the same thing 20, 30, hell 40 years without actually blowing there brains out. I get bored of a job in 6 months and go somewhere else because it is so tedious.

I'm so glad I found this. I've been on the verge of a mental breakdown for about a month now because of my 9-5. I've been so depressed and I don't sleep! I have a sleep disorder so I fall asleep a couple hours before I have to get up for work, I'm so depressed all the time and my family won't take my depression seriously. I thought multiple times, this can't be my everyday life until I die. It can't! An overnight job is also an inconvenience. I went through that same anger research phase on multiple occasions. Which I'm sure is why RUclips recommended this video to me. The whole gig work thing sounds like a great idea though. I pray we can all eventually find that one thing / Job that gives us peace. It's crazy because this was recommended to me right when I was ready to Google 'what to do when you hate your job.' Also, please don't give away your money!!! Try to shift from night shift to morning. I worked nightshift for 5 years and it destroyed my ability to sleep. It is like no matter what I feel chronically sleepy. Lol it's so bad for your health.
find a job where you can get an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities act to work 12-8pm, and get a doctor to write a letter that confirms your diagnosis of Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder. and probably start training or getting educated in a field where time of day doesn't matter as much or you can make your own hours, like software engineering, technical writer, pilot, nurse, EMT, etc. This disorder doesnt go away. you have to work your life around it.
This video randomly popped up in my youtube and I had a feeling I would like your input on 9-5 culture before I clicked the thumbnail. This is spot on! I've been a full time freelancer for nearly 6 yrs now with no regrets! I'm not saying I've been living the dream or carefree ever since. But the freedom to have autonomy and choose my calendar workdays and hourly rates I don't dread vs. the same mind-numbing office job every week is a major plus. It's erased the years of PTSD these toxic jobs gave me from office politics, being hired and fired or hired and quitting to save my sanity while fighting for my livelihood. To those who are able to sanely hold down a 9-5 for 10+ years to retirement, congrats to them. But that's extremely rare these days. This is not the same economy that Boomers and our big siblings Generation X inherited. Again, great takeaways!

I empathize with you, I was a so called good kid and spent my entire 20s and 30s in school, then paying off my student loans and starting a family. Now in my 40s I’ve finally attained what I thought I fought for but I’m still working hard and close to burning out. My hope is to preserve my health and sanity so I can achieve true freedom. There were some good times but thinking about my youth I would not want to live it over, especially today.
I feel the exact same way. I'm 23 but after highschool I didn't pursue college and instead wanted to boost my potential career by taking "shortcuts". I basically wanted to start working as fast as possible and ended up attending a coding boot camp (6 months) and landed a software developer job with no degree. It was fully remote, 75k, and perfect for being comfortable in my own space. Suddenly it switched to in-person and I'm exhausted every single day being tied to an office chair and computer screen. Traffic was 45 min there and 1 hour back and it was always depressing to see the sun start dropping by the time I was finally home. A lot of the coworkers I had were much older than me and I felt completely out of place. I would often ask myself if I made the mistake of not taking things slowly. I got laid off after a year as expected and am now attending college again. I know remote is something I'm 100% looking for now and I'm currently enjoying life as much as I can.
This is the modern day equivalent of “give me liberty or give me death.” Respect, for making it happen Thomas! I’ve felt like this since the day I turned 18.

I just quit my 9-5 two week ago and i feel great. I can talk about it a lot but I think having time to work on my ideas and my self is one of the best thing I love to do and I am in this part of my life. The reason that lead me to this decision is simple. I think i know what i want to do with my life what type of person I should become and what I want to do and I just ask myself "Are you going there with the things you are doing right now?" And as you can see I got the most painful answer to that ever. It was not about job only, I was angry how much time I was spending working for another one and leaving my goals on the other side. Find reason in yourself and start changing it for good. I've been trying to somehow make money outside of my 9 to 5. Fail multiple times but still push myself to get where I want to be. You show me that it is possible and it doesn't really matter who you were and where you come from. It's about the consistency and try errors.
The worst part for me is that people call it a 9 to 5 but for me it's a 6 to 6 since I have to be awake at 6, get ready, drive to work work for 9 hours plus 1 hour of lunch of unpayed time, and then go home. I know there's people that have it worst and I can't imagine how they manage to do it.

I see your point and I fully agree. It sucks working a 9-5 but it sucks even more working from 6am-5pm. I can't take off whenever I want. I only making $19/hr with time and a half for overtime. The worst part of the job is how much lifting I do. I'm talking around 75-150 LBS if not more.
This video impacted me significantly. I have the same thoughts as you all the time but can't talk about this stuff with my friends, because they are more than content in trading their time they'll never get back for laughable amounts of money. I'm glad more people feel the way I feel and let's try to get out of this 9/5 loop and enjoy our freedom.
Life is not about making money, it's about being happy. Some of the happiest and most content people on earth are very poor. Because they value the simple things in life and not being chained to a faceless system.
Good on you my friend, i worked as a high school teacher in a public school here in Mexico, the pay wasn't great but the feeling you get after they graduate and personally thank you feels like a blessing from the heavens, i always tried to nurture an entrepreneurship spirit in all of my students, sadly i was let got when covid hit and i have been working in IT, even though the pay is double of what i earned as a teacher, it is just a soulless environment like you said, the company, the colleagues, nobody gives a f about you, i can't wait for the moment to get back to teaching and i'll never look back at corporate work. Thomas, thank you for your motivational videos. I am currently in an unhappy situation as I pursued a career that does not fulfill me. However, I have been studying programming for some time now and I love it. My goal is to become a digital nomad and live a non-traditional lifestyle. I’m living the dream. 6 figs. Remote work. The culture is so relaxed. I get to do what I love 9-5 Monday to Friday. Time fcking flies. I’ve worked brutal work hours at food services for years before this during college. One point it was 10 dollars and hour lol. I make 6x that now. Good enough for me. My biggest thing with the 9-5 grind is the fact that you’re limited on time off, vacation days, etc. I’d rather make less money and be able to take whatever time off I wanted. Time is more valuable than money

I'm 33 years old. After working my ass off for 15+ years, pursuing higher education at age 30, did everything they tell us to do to reach a better life, I'm dead in the water - still in poverty and with 2 children with special needs, miserable. I'm determined to find my own way out.

Bro you’re definitely not crazy. I grew up in a state run foster home with nothing. Went to college, got out and started making 130k a year. Always thought money bought happiness, but it’s definitely not true. I work so much that I can’t even enjoy the money I make. I’ve got 160k saved and what I’ve come to realize is once you can cover your basic needs - shelter/food/gas, everything else is just extra. Do we need to sacrifice our life’s at work for extra shxt? Everyone’s answer is different, but for me, I’m learning I’d rather have more free time than money.

I’m 44 male with wife and kid. I moved back in with my parents after living in Asia for 11 years. I started doing uber/lyft as a way to get by until I found work but I’m in the same boat. I can’t go back to the 9-5. The freedom of deciding when to work or not matters more the older I get. I currently live with my parents and pay for the 1200 mortgage payment plus food so that they can retire off their shitty social security. I get to spent more time with my aging parents and my wife/son. It’s a win win situation for everyone even though my living situation is frowned upon by western standards. I’m happy

Im 31 and only tried working a 9-5 in two different jobs. I had a near nervous breakdown. From that I learned to live off my earnings from what i made working 25 or so hours a week. People may look down upon me but I have to put my mental and physical health first.

Man this video is so relatable. There are so many ways that you can make money online its actually crazy. The hardest part for me is taking action which Im finally doing right now, I've been researching for too long....TOO LONG. My biggest mistake was asking other people (friends, family) if I should do this or that and they always look at me like I'm crazy or stupid absolutely no faith at all and that made me mad so hopefully it works and I PROVE them wrong that its actually possible.

Agreed on this. I've waited way too long. It's actually funny how the two things that I wanted to do back in my late teens are resurfacing as my specific options in my early 30s. I was too overwhelmed when I was younger and wasted so much time and my body to hard work at a 9-5. I was the one telling the people I worked with back at McDonalds, taht I was going to be making big money in a year after I quit. I tried and failed because I was too overwhelmed and just didn't have the skills or know-how. I've always wanted to run an online business.

One of my friends said he couldn’t face a 9-5 so went into the military and then became a pilot. He loved the outdoors, camping, sports. When he said he was joining the Army, at first, I wondered why, but then realised it was the perfect career for him. Literally ticked all his boxes. One day, he would be practicing strafing using a machine gun on a helicopter. A few months later skiing in the mountains. Next day, he did capture / torture training etc. It was so varied, not just obstacle courses, hikes, shooting on the range. Honestly sounded amazing. The experience changed him as a person, far more those of us who took 9-5’s after college.

Im 33 and im at a point where I'd rather die than to work a plantation (9-5). My last job was at home depot and still couldn't save a substantial amount of money despite how frugal i am, and i mean FRUGAL. Taking out frustration on a manager got me fired and that was it for me. Decided to use my last check to buy and resell products on and offline. With my returns and profits from buying and reselling, made me not only realize how much I'll never work a plantation job ever in my life again, but gave me the discipline to keep it up. Its kinda fun to make your own money, using your own strategies ane skills to get your own money.

I have a cushy existence with a good salary and I work from home. However I now wish to escape it as it has created a "groundhog day" life for me. Every day is very much the same, and as a person who very much enjoys nature and outdoors, and travel, I realize I have created a Golden Cage scenario for myself... I've built this life that by society's standards is a success, but on a personal level, it causes me distress as it is not what I want to be doing with my life...
I hope more younger people like you come to realize that there are other ways of making a living and being happy that do not involve getting into lifelong debt via student loans, then getting shackled to a desk for the rest of their lives to pay them off.

No it doesn't. I go out every single night for maybe $20. A pitcher of beer between two people is $15 each. Going to the park and playing music, getting high, walking your dog with a woman..all free. Going out after work to a nice cafe is $5-10. Many nightclubs with live music have no cover or $10. But you have to live in the big city where ya just gotta walk out and find the vibe. The small-town/suburban car lifestyle is no life at all.

Back in 2009 I did the same thing. Got super tired of the 9-5 grind and decided to go into affiliate marketing after seeing some silly ad in my email that said "you can make $300/hr posting links online". Ended up learning so much by considering the possibility that what I saw in that ad could actually happen. I worked for myself as a freelancer doing this type of marketing for 5 years. It's now a skill that EVERY business pays good money for, and if you know your stuff, you can make bank in a corporate environment. Listen to your inner voice. But for me I could work for 10 years straight making $100-150K a year, save every penny and still not comfortably afford my Dream car (A 22’ Ferrari F8 Spider).

There are “9 to 5’s” that are decent. It all depends on the environment and the work you are doing. I was incredibly miserable working a 9 to 5 for years until I was able to find a job working remotely most of the time. That frankly alleviated 70% of the stress of working. I also found a position where I would at least not be overworked and underpaid like I was previously. When you are compensated appropriately and there is a respect for boundaries a 9 to 5 can be a great thing. Also, never underestimate the privilege of employer-sponsored healthcare.
There’s something called the Pareto principle where 80% of work is done by 20% of people.
The other 80% of people are mostly playing pretend and doing just 20% of the work collectively. If you’re in that latter group and you know it, you’re balling.
The only problem is if you get laid off and have to find a new paycheque. Otherwise, you can really leave the office early and live life without falling behind on anything.
some people dont want to be employees and work under another human(s) being/company and depend on them for their paychecks/to get paid/their livelihood. I worked 9-5s and did gig work for a while, one of them paid $32/hour and was pretty comfy. But at the end of the day if you have a job, youre still required to wake up at certain times, show up at certain times, finish at certain times, interact with people, have certain responsibilities and tasks, answer to other people, etc. Anyway, long story short, I sell weed now, do hedged arbitraging, and trade crypto/stocks. Ive had more money than Ive ever had when I worked "regular" jobs and also do whatever the hell I want when I want. Since I dont have the physical,emotional, and mental burdens and effects of a 9-5 or having to think or care about someone else's business I have more time for myself too, I got absolutely ripped and shredded (alot of time to go to the gym).
I really think 9-5s are scams. They scam your time, your other life opportunities, your health, and your money. The 5 years you spent working at some location you could have spent learning a trade or a skill or how to invest money or literally anything else to get you ahead in life for your future.
I also think people who are not subservient by nature or personality have a hard time working 9-5s or jobs with superiors/managers/bosses. I can't have people telling me what to do or what time to wake up or what time to show up somewhere, I'd rather be in charge of my own life and dictate my own terms, but make it work for you and find that path. You ain't gonna find it at a 9-5.
If you absolutely MUST WORK a 9-5 because you need the money to survive or whatever, my best advice would be to slave that job and save as much as you can from it, and try to make that money work for you so you can get away from that 9-5 life.
If youre working a 9-5, you need to delete the ubereats account, netflix account, spotify account, and stop buying the latest iphones because that will make it harder and slower to get out of the 9-5 life if youre also spending what little money you make on the dumbest of items
I would chose to work remotely if I was allowed to be picky. But in person jobs only requiring a high school diploma don't even want to hire me when I have a bachelor's degree. Forget competing against 100+ people for a remote job.

Agreed. My ultimate goal is to start a business but right now I am working a wonderful full time job. I started with my company part time in college as the editors assistant and I was allowed to set my own hours and work from home. I kept track of my hours in paper. When i graduated, i was hired as a full time reporter. Every day i do something different and still work from home half the time. My supervisor, the editor, and big boss are AWESOME. So are my coworkers. No office politics. And they care about me. They work with me when they know i have to visit specialists for my chronic health issues. It doesn't pay the best but you can't beat the flexibility!
What I hate about working is that you are trapped at your job and that you have to be there and do what the boss tells you to do. Life is too short to take bs. Find a better way.

I agree completely. I’m 39 and can’t work a 40 hour week to save my life. I moved to South Korea to teach English. I work 25 hours a week and get paid full time. I make $20k a year but that’s enough to easily live in Korea. I’d rather teach English making $20k then $130k at a real job.

I don't know what country you're in, but most schools in America finish around 2 or 3pm. If you have after school activities or play a sport in school, you maybe practice for 2-3 hours after school (ending around 5pm).

When I was much younger, before I even knew what working a job meant or the prospect of retirement, I watched my parents suffer for years, working long hours, with little vacation for what I now see as minimal pay. No employer can pay you what your worth, so you have to find a way to pay yourself. I am thankful for your content. This video is extremely encouraging, and I totally can relate. I raised a daughter who echoes everything you said, lol.
As far as the ads, please leave them on. In my opinion, you should monetize your channel, it actually benefits your viewers. I'm 17 and hate the idea of going to school for so many years, just slaving away your precious years when you're at the peak of your capabilities just for you to end up working a 9-5 for a trash boss you dont even like in which you have to ask from him for permsission to go on vacation, and getting 2 days off only in which you probably sleep for the whole Saturday cuz you're so tired from the previous day and then spending your Sunday scrolling through your phone all day. I know I'm the only one who can change the way I live my daily life and should take 100% responsibilties and actually do whatever it takes to escape the rat race instead of just complaining about how the system is just the way it is but unfortunately, as a teenager who is still living with his parents, it indeed is quite hard to do things the way I want to do them.

i like a 9-5 because of the simplicity. while it sucks going to find those jobs, after a job is secured not having to think about work and being able to think purely about what I like doing during the week/weekend is really nice mentally. mad respect for people like you that have the willpower to push themselves to work they way they want to though.
also for the YT ads, it used to be how you described it but a few years back they make the ads show up regardless of what you have selected so you might as well have it on.

It’s great you are sharing your story, there are a lot of people like us. I worked various retail 9-5’s for the first 8 years of my working life and didn’t even realize how much I hated it because I just thought that was what I had to do. Last year I started my own dog training business and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been! I’ve already gotten to the same pay range in under a year and my work is much more rewarding getting to help people’s relationships with their dogs!

I actually had no savings, my business luckily had very little startup costs. I did pay a lot of car payments during that time which is a major resource. I am also lucky my family helped pitch in for my training academy which was really my only startup cost. When it comes to hiring someone, I will be investing a lot of time ensuring they train dogs in a way similarly to me, so I will pay them only a slightly lower wage than me to keep them. The competition pays dog walkers/ trainers incredibly low amounts and I wouldn’t want to do that since I worked for one for a while.

I'm almost 41. I've changed around 20 jobs since 2001. Worked as receptionist, waiter, warehouse worker, retailer seller, 24/7. I had some IT courses so then i worked in service desk and help desk jobs and in the end as IT technician.
In 2018 i had an "epiphany" (lol) and finally I understood that i will never be able to work regular 9-5 again, especially not office jobs.Looking back i saw that every job i had caused me to feel trapped and sick physically and mentally, and that it was elevating my anxiety and depression.
I went to work some occasional night shifts at a "party" hostel after that, just something till i "figure things out". Well, what i figured out is that i don't need to achieve anything but serenity for myself. I gotta stop listening to my peers, family and society and it's norms. I need time, not money. I don't want to have my days dedicated to someone else who dictates when and where i have to be, when to eat and when to pee.
I had some savings so i didn't work for 2 years after that. I started doing food deliveries in 2021 and still doing it. Is it a sh** job? Meh, sure. Is money good? Nope. Do I choose when and how much i work? Yes. Does anyone bother me? Nope. Is this perfect solution? Nope. Do I feel better than in any job i had before? F*** yeah!
Conclusion: I have no aspirations or plans for having my own business. It would be, again, forcing something unnatural that would make me feel sick again. I do hope that someday i will find something that will inspire me to do some kind of "passion project" that will also generate money. Till then i'm as free as I can be, or at least I feel fine, and that's what matters to me. I hope you all find something. A way out of 9-5, rat race, wage slavery etc. etc. Have a nice day!

The thing is, I don't have aspirations for hierarchical climbing in corpo world or "grinding" something which doesn't interest me. I tried many jobs as I mentioned and i hope i will find interest in future to invest myself in something personal.
Just make sure you don't have kids who will have to depend on you to survive. The very nature of having kids demands you have regular income that can accommodate their needs otherwise you will only make them and yourself very poor and miserable.

I’ve been working a 9-5 job ever since I graduated college, so I’m coming up 9 years now. I love it, it given me a routine in life . I’m salaried, have benefits and have a great commute to work ;My managers aren’t checking when I come in or leave, if I have to leave early I just do it . Due to Covid a lot of companies have hybrid schedules which I love . I don’t like being home all day and really had to adjust when Covid hit .
If you have a 9 to 5 and are feeling unfulfilled then it might be time to leave that company.

I'm so glad I found this. I've been on the verge of a mental breakdown for about a month now because of my 9-5. I've been so depressed and I don't sleep! I have a sleep disorder so I fall asleep a couple hours before I have to get up for work, I'm so depressed all the time and my family won't take my depression seriously. I thought multiple times, this can't be my everyday life until I die. It can't! An overnight job is also an inconvenience. I went through that same anger research phase on multiple occasions. Which I'm sure is why RUclips recommended this video to me. The whole gig work thing sounds like a great idea though. I pray we can all eventually find that one thing / Job that gives us peace. Try to shift from night shift to morning. I worked nightshift for 5 years and it destroyed my ability to sleep. It is like no matter what I feel chronically sleepy. Lol it's so bad for your health.
find a job where you can get an accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities act to work 12-8pm, and get a doctor to write a letter that confirms your diagnosis of Delayed Sleep Wake Phase Disorder. and probably start training or getting educated in a field where time of day doesn't matter as much or you can make your own hours, like software engineering, technical writer, pilot, nurse, EMT, etc. This disorder doesnt go away. you have to work your life around it.

I'm not saying I've been living the dream or carefree ever since. But the freedom to have autonomy and choose my calendar workdays and hourly rates I don't dread vs. the same mind-numbing office job every week is a major plus. It's erased the years of PTSD these toxic jobs gave me from office politics, being hired and fired or hired and quitting to save my sanity while fighting for my livelihood.
To those who are able to sanely hold down a 9-5 for 10+ years to retirement, congrats to them. But that's extremely rare these days. This is not the same economy that Boomers and our big siblings Generation X inherited. Again, great takeaways!

I empathize with you, I was a so called good kid and spent my entire 20s and 30s in school, then paying off my student loans and starting a family. Now in my 40s I’ve finally attained what I thought I fought for but I’m still working hard and close to burning out. My hope is to preserve my health and sanity so I can achieve true freedom. I feel the exact same way. I'm 23 but after highschool I didn't pursue college and instead wanted to boost my potential career by taking "shortcuts". I basically wanted to start working as fast as possible and ended up attending a coding boot camp (6 months) and landed a software developer job with no degree. It was fully remote, 75k, and perfect for being comfortable in my own space. Suddenly it switched to in-person and I'm exhausted every single day being tied to an office chair and computer screen. Traffic was 45 min there and 1 hour back and it was always depressing to see the sun start dropping by the time I was finally home. A lot of the coworkers I had were much older than me and I felt completely out of place. I would often ask myself if I made the mistake of not taking things slowly. I got laid off after a year as expected and am now attending college again. I know remote is something I'm 100% looking for now and I'm currently enjoying life as much as I can.
Honestly sounds like you were living my dream life but you still young and experienced now, sure you can get that remote work.
This is the modern day equivalent of “give me liberty or give me death.”

I just quit my 9-5 two week ago and i feel great. I can talk about it a lot but I think having time to work on my ideas and my self is one of the best thing I love to do and I am in this part of my life.
The reason that lead me to this decision is simple. I think i know what i want to do with my life what type of person I should become and what I want to do and I just ask myself "Are you going there with the things you are doing right now?" And as you can see I got the most painful answer to that ever.
It was not about job only, I was angry how much time I was spending working for another one and leaving my goals on the other side. Find reason in yourself and start changing it for good.

I've been trying to somehow make money outside of my 9 to 5. Fail multiple times but still push myself to get where I want to be. You show me that it is possible and it doesn't really matter who you were and where you come from. It's about the consistency and try errors.
The worst part for me is that people call it a 9 to 5 but for me it's a 6 to 6 since I have to be awake at 6, get ready, drive to work work for 9 hours plus 1 hour of lunch of unpayed time, and then go home. I know there's people that have it worst and I can't imagine how they manage to do it.
I know that feeling, when account for commute to & fro mine was a 7 to 7. Which sucks especially with a small child waiting for you to come back.

I see your point and I fully agree. It sucks working a 9-5 but it sucks even more working from 6am-5pm. I can't take off whenever I want. I only making $19/hr with time and a half for overtime. The worst part of the job is how much lifting I do. I'm talking around 75-150 LBS if not more.

Good on you my friend, i worked as a high school teacher in a public school here in Mexico, the pay wasn't great but the feeling you get after they graduate and personally thank you feels like a blessing from the heavens, i always tried to nurture an entrepreneurship spirit in all of my students, sadly i was let got when covid hit and i have been working in IT, even though the pay is double of what i earned as a teacher, it is just a soulless environment like you said, the company, the colleagues, nobody gives a f about you, i can't wait for the moment to get back to teaching and i'll never look back at corporate work.
