5:02 I effin hate the fact that you OLDER people think a young audience can't sit through a movie. It's the reason there wasn't even a movie worth watching this year....
The old Ben Hur had a brilliant screenplay and the women played a pivotal role in its emotional impact and meaning. If they cut much of that out in new Ben Hur - then I'm not expecting much at all. The whole point of the chariot race was to contrast it with the remarkable scene afterward between Marsalis and Judah. I would like to see a comparison - as I still watch the old classic from time to time - as it truly is a great film, and not just an action adventure film - which sounds more like what they've done with this remake.
They were thinking, "hmm well theres a younger generation who've never heard of the original and these people luv Jack Huston, I think we can make a decent buck if we just take the money and run."
My favorite 59 Ben Hur story is how other cast and crew thought it was hilarious how much the gay subtext between Judah & Massalah from the book & original draft of the script completely flew over Charlton Heston's head. That said, I LOVE the original. It's been one of my top 10 greatest films since I was 16. I even watched it in Italian when I was in Ostia once.
+Alexander Forbes in this case, the author & screenwriter both acknowledged it was there. So there's definitely some in there. It's just kinda cute that Heston was apparently the only one who didn't get it. Even the actor who played Massalah knew. I don't think it was mean spirited or cruel or anything, I think they all just thought it was funny how oblivious to it Heston was.
+D Mc I didn't realize it myself until I was 17 and looked into the original, the making of the Heston version, the production, etc. it's one of those things where once u realize it you can't believe it ever went over your head.
Hey. It'd be great if you ALSO covered the ORIGINAL 1925 silent epic BEN HUR, which many believe had a MORE amazing chariot scene than the 50s spectacle. Also starred the forgotten (sadly) early gay movie star and first Latin lover Ramon Novarro -- who was one of the leading stars of his era and sadly disappeared before being the victim of a horrible hate-crime (and then being besmirched by made up legends of his "sordid" death instead of the real court testified crime he was a victim of. Okay. Alot there but figured I'd include that last part to preclude repeating BS stories about Novarro.
I think appealing to a younger modern audience is all well and good but work this out, how come this Ben Hur 2016, a remake has flopped, but Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" epic was huge when that came out. One is a remake, the other a original story and film.
DO and Compare of this 2016 version Number 6 movie by the by, and the 11 AA's 1959 classic. Thx for the review, seemed like you both dragged abit curious if you agree?
How can you say a 35% on RT is lower than it deserves when both of you gave it a rotten rating (4.8/10, 5/10)? 65% of the critics agree with you...In fact, the average critic rating is 5.0, which is exactly what you gave it.
35% is not the average rating though; it's the percentage of critics who rated the movie higher than 60/100. When a movie has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, it doesn't mean all critics rated it 100/100; only that 100% of the critics rated it above 60/100. Similarly, when a movie has 0% on RT, it means 100% of the critics rated it below 60/100.
Honestly I hope they didn't secularize this flick too much. I really liked the Christian overtones of the Charlton Hesten version. I'm going to see it in about an hour.
I liked the original . . . will I see this version, won't I . . . will I, won't I . . . errrrrrrrrr. If y'all are gonna' review old movies, do A Star Is Born since Bradley Cooper is redoing it with Lady Gaga.
Micheal Fassbender would have been beter cast in the lead role for this shitty remake, and Ridley Scott should have directed it, he would have done much better job (anyone remember Gladiator?). But to be honest, this Ben Hur remake should have never gone ahead, Hollywood would have been better off just making it into a TV series instead. The Tv series of Spartacus worked really well and that was originally a 1959 film epic with Kirk Douglas.
There's only one Ben-Hur 1959 ICON.
The definition of 'a movie no one asked for or wanted'.
Please do the 1959 one, just please. But with Ben and Alonso, the whole group has a better dynamic.
agree! would like to see them do classics along with new movies

5:02 I effin hate the fact that you OLDER people think a young audience can't sit through a movie. It's the reason there wasn't even a movie worth watching this year....
Is it false though?
that's true though
kinda true, im 18 and most people my age prefer television
I'm 20 and I don't know a lot of people my age who have seen more then 10 pre 1980's movie.
I completely agree.
No Charlton Heston, no Ben Hur.
The old Ben Hur had a brilliant screenplay and the women played a pivotal role in its emotional impact and meaning. If they cut much of that out in new Ben Hur - then I'm not expecting much at all. The 1959 movie is almost a masterpiece... it's amazing how the special effects stand the test of time. Yeah, DO THE REVIEW!!
Hey have you guys heard of historical advisors? No? Neither did the people who made this movie.
Great discussion in the review, I think this is one of the best WTF's I've seen this year. I'd certainly be down for 1959 Ben-Hur restropsective.
What were they thinking trying to remake this? The previous one was amazing
Ben-Hur began life as a novel. This is the fifth adaptation
richfictionfighter It also used to be a stage play. Still doesn't change the fact that the Heston version was amazing
@RichFictionFighter It's clear from the trailers and the summary that this is based directly on the 1959 movie.
They were thinking, "hmm well theres a younger generation who've never heard of the original and these people luv Jack Huston, I think we can make a decent buck if we just take the money and run."
Man Tony Kebbel has the worst agent in Hollywood.
I think he'll redeem himself at some point. He made a good decision by doing the first two Planet of the Apes reboot movies xD
He is going to be in Gold with Gaghan/McConaghey, which looks like it should be good.
Kebbell was in Dawn. A different guy (Christopher Gordon) played Koba in Rise.
My Matt Atchity impression...'It kinda works.", "I kinda dig it.", "It's kinda okay.", "It's kinda not bad."
Cheer Matt... all in good fun.
I would definitely be interested in a review of the '59 one.

Yeah, once you know the story it all makes sense.
People see gay subtext where none exists very often.
+Alexander Forbes in this case, the author & screenwriter both acknowledged it was there. So there's definitely some in there. Matt's all shuckin and jivin like he was going to give it live a 6, or maybe a 7 I thought... but all that for a 5.
Ben hur, done that.
twice
Next we will remake Lawrence of Arabia starring Eddie Redmayne.
I cried at this comment Peter O Toole never won an Oscar but at least preserve his legacy
Does the guy in the Charlton Heston role utters the words "where are my mother and my sister?" throughout htis version as well?
Jack Huston. Wow. So wonderful to look at.
Loved the action scenes. Boats and chariots, fantastic.
Didn't mind the shaky camera.

Please do the 1959 ben hur version review. Thanks
Who the hell asked for this movie?
public domain
They should have made the main character a transgender and call the movie “Been-Her.”
Richard Harrow from Boardwalk Empire finally has a lead role in a film.
Please do the Bred Letter Media Ben Hurt video! Thanks!
Discuss the original Ben Hur next, please.
I've seen Heston's and one earlier version. I will wait for HBO on this remake.

Good point. Matt of all people should know how RT ratings work.
35% is not the average rating though; it's the percentage of critics who rated the movie higher than 60/100. Whats the relationship between these two?
this film made me feel like there is no place like home.
The Heston one was the best, don't see why they had to remake it!
Bring back the stool table!
The trailer makes it look okay. Not great, not terrible.
That "show, don't tell" rule is over-rated. The Star Wars prequels are proof of that, where they showed what they only told before.
That rule of thumb generally refers to exposition
The prequels prove nothing. Those films are almost entirely exposition.
Big misunderstanding there...
And that's part of what makes them terrible.
They should do an old movie every week.
Ben Hur - the original Hurr Durr.
Honestly I hope they didn't secularize this flick too much. I really liked the Christian overtones of the Charlton Hesten version. I'm going to see it in about an hour.
Wow, I thought that this remake was amazing. I was not disappointed.
If anyone is interested, I posted a Ben Hur review/rant.
Talk about the 1959 movie, please
or the 1925 film? anything
Tony Kebbel was the protagonist in Rock N' Rolla. Just sayin'.
Wow they barely gave this film a passing grade
the lighting could be better 4 this studio
I liked the original . . . will I see this version, won't I . . . will I, won't I . . . errrrrrrrrr.

Madhu Singh
Ohh thats nicee, goooood for yoooooou
Why do I always disagree with Matt?
how Many Oscars will this win?
Who the fuck cares about the Oscars?
Morgan Freeman plays an African, without an African accent.
just watch the original movie.
the 59 one even the very first one or chewing glass
it was a awesome movie ! why do you dog it
I never want to hear a white woman do a Morgan Freeman impression ever again.
Addendum: never want to hear a white woman's say, "Hot Brazilian Jesus." Sounds like a trendy drink or a new type of bikini wax.
Talk about old classics when the hollywood dumping period is going on!
Der alte Film war viel besser .
jajajaj Hotest Jesus ever! ahahaha
