Really sad. I was massively excited for this film as I treasueed the original Ben Hur film (esp. Stephen Boyd) and loved Timur's Day Watch/Night Watch movies. Was really upset by how much he ruined it in every possible way...
The 1925 Ramon Navarro version is great, finally watched it back in January. Colour sequences in a mostly black-and-white film for when Jeebus shows up.
Chuck Heston and Steve Boyd are looking down from up above on this version of "Ben-Hur" and laughing their butts off! "We're still 'Number One' Chuck!" 😂 "And how Steve!" 🤣 Some things are best left alone.
I agree that it did feel old fashioned, but I found that kind of comforting. It wasn't trying to do anything more than tell a story. However I disagree about the chariot race; i thought it was brutal, exciting and really well shot. I havent seen any other versions of the film so cant compare. For me this was a nice night at the cinema with my adult daughter.
Why can't a film set in Rome and Jerusalem have actors who are Italian and Jewish and Palestinian. Not chalk white people with blue eyes. Its like making a film about Gandhi and casting a Chinaman or a film about Martin Luther King and casting an Mexican. There are tones of Italian actors who are well known why hasn't Leonardo DiCaprio or Nicholas Cage been cast as a Roman?
Sir Lord Percy Trollington The Third What an intelligent well written insightful response almost Shakespearean in its depth and complexity no really how many hours did you spend on that?
Sir Lord Percy Trollington The Third I expect the bear bones accuracy in a film with a historical setting or if set in a certain real life location. Like in that Die Hard Movie Russia even though you can clearly see Hungarian flags in the background. In short i like film makers to get the basics right. Like i said why not just as Jackie Chan to play Gandhi?
Sir Lord Percy Trollington The Third There are plenty of well known Italian American actors. But I'm sure no went to see if it it had Leonardo DiCaprio or Nicholas Cage who has heard of them.
Mark convinced me to watch this one with his video why Ben Hur should be given a chance considering the story was told over and over before the 1959 classic, and I can't say it was enjoyable after watching it, it had a few good moments but not enough to make it worthwhile, the score was off and the end credit even had some pop singer, it was laughable. The dialogue was very basic and lacked the sophistication that we're use to from this genre.
Spoliers. Yes it is. And if that sounds stupid to you that's because it is. So stupid it had a great ending then they decided to go another 20 minutes or so. Honestly a lot of movies just need better editors nowadays.
Modern movies have terrible dialogue and are full of flushes. Modern acting is too realistic and takes away the magic of cinema. They also impose clothing and commentary.
"Here's the thing"....... cue negative review.
Cue Honest review i would have said.
BEN!
HUR!
What is it good for?
Absolutely nothing!
Brilliant!
Hah!
Well played, sir.
Nicely done.
Say it again!
"The thing with it is"
Mark seems to have adopted that phrase into just about every review lately.
I was about to comment how "Here's the thing" is a catchphrase!

Thanks again for the mention at :55 (Nat Segaloff)

I want Kermode to now do a Kermode Uncut about Ben Hur the book, the play and its adaptation as films.

4:45 "except for the Raid" Thing is most action sequences just aren't good enough to stand on their own. But they can.
it looks like a TV movie

agreed actually! it's a great plodding visual effects moving, I call it ploddingly ok

+Toad Lash less than your self-righteous faux outraged anti white diatribe.

The Room needs a remake.
There already was a remake of The Room, it came out last year and starred Brie Larson.
Is the next one up Magnificent Seven?
Yeah that is up next will be giving that trash looking reboot a miss as well, keep watching these trash reboots and Hollywood will keep them coming.
so you liked it then! :D
he didnt even mention the cheesy ending
I honestly really liked the way they went until the ending. One of the stupidest ending I've ever seen a film.
Spoliers. Yes it is. And if that sounds stupid to you that's because it is. So stupid it had a great ending then they decided to go another 20 minutes or so. Honestly a lot of movies just need better editors nowadays.
+Midas Baijense They should have finished as Ben Hur is hoisted up like a King after the Chariot Race. That's were I'd have ended if I was making it.
I suppose i haven't read the book in years but i remember really enjoying it.
Endless remakes and sequels.Give us something orinigal,Hollywood, ffs!!!!
The problem is that most of the times they release something original it bombs, so they keep doing remakes, sequels and franchises
More original films are made now than ever before in history of cinema.

Ben who?
