      Raiken Xion I know, but whereas Independence Day is a guilty pleasure I think Rogue One is a genuinely great movie, in fact Mark's review is the one that not only best coincides and reflects my own opinions on the film but also (in my opinion) has the most insight into the actual quality of the movie.

      Raiken Xion I'd agree with you and site what I loved about the movie, but as I said al you need to do is look up Mark's review. Everything I had to say about it is reflected there.

    We have a diction definition for "Meh"
    Meh (Interjection)
    1) Indifference
    2) Not great, not awful.
    3) Independence Day: Resurgence

    Not to spoil, but I thought the ending was ludicrous. Not only did I find the setup for the sequel a little over the top... but kind of against the idea of what the first Independence Day was all about: the fact that we're not the biggest baddest species in the universe. We were humbled in the first one, only surviving by the skin of our teeth. The ending of this one paints us as the saviours of the galaxy for some reason. Did this bug anyone else?

      well everything was super dumb in this movie! With the Gravity the Spaceship does so much damage, then why doesn't it fly over the whole earth? and the U.s. was a major part in the victory of the first movie, why doesn't it fly over the U.S.? The great chinese pilot? her father dies, who cares? she'g gonna go on a date with the dumb friend so who cares! Will Smith's mother was an exotic dancer, now the head nurse of a hospital? okay then .... the current president dies, who cares? we only care about the old president that mostly just did an inspiring speech in the first movie!

    My biggest disappointment about the movie was that the united humanity didn't really fight the aliens. One of the big promotional points about the movie was that humanity had been united. No more major wars and conflicts. Life rebuilt and improved. But aside from the Chinese pilot and Moon commander and the orbital lasers getting destroyed, where was the united humanity? The movie was still 99% about the United States fighting and winning the whole thing. Sure, the alien craft covered and/or destroyed a good third of the world when it landed. But I was expecting like a Japan strike force seen, then a Canadian boobing unit, then a Brazilian space fighter unit, medical supplies coming in from Cuba, or a ground battle in Africa. Speaking of Africa, how cool would it have been to see those African soldiers fighting aliens?? (I also hated the sound effects of the lasers.)

  • @dennett316
    @dennett316 8 лет назад +17

    I really quite disliked it, and that disappoints me, because I really enjoyed the original. In this, everything is just worse than the original (other than the CG). The writing is worse. The dialogue is much worse, to the point where I got vibes of the Star Wars prequel trilogy in terms of how badly Lucas directed his actors. The destruction porn was unexciting, as was the action, because I just didn't care about any of the characters. And the way they were reacting to seeing London torn up in front of them, I never got the sense that any of the characters cared either. It was just lifeless throughout. I wish I could say it was just "meh", but it's so badly written, I just can't...the dialogue had me cringing at times.
    I wanted this to be fun, but it turned into a disappointing slog.

    • @dankay420
      @dankay420 8 лет назад

      I really disliked the new cast and whenever there was destruction I really didn't care, even Jeff Goldblum jokes about the landmarks being destroyed when millions of people are dying around them. the cg in it was terrible as well especially near the end.

    First half was very good and I felt it was leading up to a surprising climax, but then my fears came true, and the whole second half was predictable and long. Action was good, but the thing that does let the movie down the most is the inability for the characters to explain what is going on, so most dialogue is either a cringeworthy joke or just a mumble of fake scientific nonsense to try and make the any of the plot or context seem consistent and believable.

    I didn't find this movie as horrible as everyone else. I took it for what it was: a bit of brainless entertainment. If it had come out 20 years ago, shortly after the first one, I think it would have received more praise, too. This falls into the style of the original but movie going tastes have changed a lot and so it doesn't "fit" the same way. That said, I don't think this pretends to be anything it isn't--there aren't deep themes, nor do they even attempt to make them up. It's just visual effects and great sets.

The thing is, I've experience many times that I listened to a movie critic that says a movie sucked and not watch it, then it comes out on video and I saw it... and it turns out I liked it and I regretted having not watched it in cinemas. Why did we need an Independence Day 2 anyway? The only reason this exists is purely monetary. Roland Emmerich promised 2012 would be his last disaster film, but post-2012 his films have made no money whatsoever. As such, he returns to ground he's financially secure on, while resurrecting his most popular film. It screams cash in, and I'm surprised they pushed forward with it with no Will Smith. It's like going to a Queen concert these days, where most of the original people are back in control, but lack an important member. Something's missing. Utterly daft idea to make it.

  • @Destro7000

    I think it was worse than "meh" especially being a fan of the original, (although I believe we're a minority) it was pretty but had bad acting, terrible dialogue, horrifically dumb ideas ( there should never have been a Queen in the first place, why are the aliens just returning in a bigger ship), a bunch of new characters that don't even matter or do anything, and no David Arnold music except those 2 bits where they nick his main theme and just play it completely out of context.
    I could write a lovely 15-18 rated sequel to ID4 and come up with more clever scenarios than they have, it's just kinda offensive to me that they had these great sets and actors and they didn't use them for something compelling. Also they're the same director/producer and they managed to screw up? Kinda reminds me of George Lucas and Ridley Scott. It's like the directors of great sci-fi movies don't actually realise what the feeling they created in the eyes of their fans initially were, and it was all this kind of accident that they couldn't recreate because they never experienced that intimate atmospheric feeling themselves.
    What might have helped the film (aside from having a fan as the Writer, and David Arnold music) would have probably been a higher BBFC/age rating. Would have loved to see humans strapped into the biosuits being used as suicide bombers that can't be told apart from aliens or humans losing the war completely with an Empire Strikes Back-style 'the good guys fail' ending.
    If I hear another "Yeehaw!" or "Concentrate fire!" or "I got your back!" I'm gonna drop a kitten in a meat-grinder, 'The Brothers Grimm'-style.

    Yeah its really bad. Every character a mind numbingly boring cliche, everyone does exactly what you expect them to do. There's weird threads of people who just turn up and disappear who you don't care about. Some of the old characters you don't care about because they've changed so much since the first film which is a big problem because without them, its just a bad scifi movie that you have no investment in. Like how in the most recent Starwars trilogy you're just like; yeah.... Luke Skywalker wouldn't actually behave like that though would he. Some of the old characters in this you don't recognise by their actions or situations and have no resonance as they are quickly and dispassionately dispatched.
    The story is totally generic and somehow hard to follow because you can't be bothered to follow it and it doesn't really matter anyway. The aliens' motivation isn't really clear as their actions are always contrived to create the visual set pieces. For example at one point, baring in mind their mothership has landed on earth, big enough to cover the whole of the Atlantic Ocean, I'll guess 1000 ships fly round and around in a circle to "protect" the alien queen but then she just starts running around in the open desert while her protecting ships are inexplicably absent and that's just to set up what Mark would call "stuff," a visual effects heavy sequence of her chasing a school bus. There's a supposed African warlord in it who is a sort of PG Disney film version but it adds absolutely nothing to the story. If they are trying to show the world is united after the last attack is an African warlord really appropriate to represent that whole continent but the character is just too bland to even be worth wondering if its offensive.
    Jeff Golblum is great of course and Brent Spiner chews the scenery in a very entertaining way. Other than that, its just boring boring nothing trash garbage. The rest of the cast are utterly forgettable cliches with the most generic personalities reading from The Ladybird Book of Action Movie Dialogue.

    Liked the first hour but then it turned into a samey shoot them up in the last part with too much going on.

    This would work a hell of a lot better if Mark and Simon actually shared a love of movies together, in the same vein of Siskel and Ebert or such, because as it is, Simon comes off as an annoying executive studio man who tells Mark what he can or cannot say because BBC radio, whereas Mark comes off as a guy who loves film and wants to say whatever he wants. Simon's interruptions are really triggering me.

    I loved the original when it came out, fantastic characters and pacing, great special effects. I think the characters were so fun and endearing. I loathed the sequel. Terrible dark lighting. What is it with all this crappy Underworld-like lighting in films these days? Boring teenage sub-plot with really unrelatable/unlikable characters. Snooze-fest. Even Goldblum couldn't save this stinker for me. 1/10 also.

    I watched this review hoping mark would eviscerate the film, I thought it was just terrible. I kindof like watching bad films as well but I didn't even find it enjoyable on this front, it had this strange kindof self aware humour that made it harder to laugh at.

    Mars Attacks better than Independence Day?, what a joke, ID4 was 10 times better. Mars Attacks was crap. Mark is making out that it's equivalent to Shaun Of The Dead compared to Dawn Of The Dead

      I totally disagree. I enjoyed Mars Attacks, im a huge Tim Burton fan, however, Independence Day was just a different kettle of fish for me. I loved the design of the spaceships, the sound FXs, i thought it had a better story than Mars Attacks....just an amazing film. Resurgence was god awful though

    The film’s unfocused, long, badly written, baggy, an unnecessary sequel & is A strong nomination for one of 2016’s worst films. (11%) (1/5 stars) (negative)
