    Kings and Generals' historical animated documentary series on the history of Ancient Civilizations continues with a video on Maccabean Revolt - the anti-Hellenic and anti-Seleucid rebellion in Judea. As the Basileus of Seleucid Empire Antiochus the Great and his descendants attempted to Hellenize the Jews, a man called Judas Maccabeus and his relatives rose in rebellion waging a bloody guerilla war against the phalanx. This video covers all the major battles of the revolt and tells the origin story of Jewish Hanukkah

    Just a fun tidbit.
    In Tel Aviv there are two major football teams, Maccabi and Hapoel, both garnering considerable fan bases.
    Every derby (intercity match) between the two teams is a massive show.
    Whenever there is a Derby match that happens to coincide with the time of Chanuka celebrations, Hapoel fans usually chant loudly "ANTIOCHUS ANTIOCHUS OLE OLE OLE"
    I find it funny and interesting.

    • @zivgann1808

    I am glad to got around to making this. I remember suggesting it years ago. Very well prepared and documented.
    Judah Maccabbee actually fought 8 battles recorded by history. Indeed, in the last one he was defeated. The Seleucid armies he fought were no-longer formed in rectangular phalanx formation, but in square roman fashion. This was something Judah was not prepared to face.

    • @RafaelRabinovich
      @RafaelRabinovich Год назад +4

      @Evelina1995 yes, plus a rebellion against an empire, plus lots of local and international politics mixed in the matter

    • @RafaelRabinovich
      @RafaelRabinovich Год назад +6

      @Evelina1995 the "Greeks" refers to the Hellenists and the Hellenizers. The Hellenists were those of Hellenistic culture (the Seleucids in Syria and the Ptolemists in Egypt). Hellenizers refers to the assimilated Jews.
      The Macabean rebellion was against the Seleucid Hellenists and the Hellenizing Jews that sided with them.
      The Hellenists from Egypt were ambivalent, seeing the Maccabees as heroes but diminishing the Divine spirit of their rebellion. Hence, the Apocryphal books of the Maccabees, found in Egypt and written in Greek, portrays the Maccabees as heroes but omits the miracle of the Menorah.

    There were two instances where I flinched: you credited some percent of his victory as plain luck, but he would've called it G-d.
    Second: one of the last lines of the video, if not the last line, is we're they zealots trying to force their religion on people. I say it's the opposite: they were getting rid of a foreign influence that was being forced on them! Yes, they burned out the foreign influence, but it was being forced upon them, taking their freedom. They were fighters of G-d. Allowing them to be free to live a life of balance with our spiritual and physical selves.

      I'm totally fine with Maccabees fighting the Greeks, but forcing your practices on your own people and annihilating perceived "traitors" among your own is problematic. The other time it happened, during the first Jewish Roman war in 66-73 CE, it didn't end well. The zealot factions were far busier killing other Jews whom they perceived as "collaborators" and "traitors" than fighting the Romans, which added a significant civil war dimension to the conflict.
      As a religious Jew, you should know that after the destruction of the second temple, the rabbis and sages forbade any violence against other Jews regardless of their views, the only exception being if they pose a direct physical threat. This is why Jews do not kill heretics, apostates, dissidents or sectarians. Some rabbis hold that the temple was destroyed because Jews fought and killed other Jews, rather than for other transgressions against the Torah.

Especially since the Mauryans competed over modern day Pakistan and Afghanistan and succesfuly extended it till Kandhar-Kabul region in Eastern Afghanistan. If anything the Indian parts of the empire (some parts of west of the Indus and modern day Punjab and Sindh) were lost quite early on first to the Mauryans and later the Greco-Bactrians.

      They seemed the most faithful to Alexander's vision in their generally more tolerant attitude to foreign culture; their founder for instance was the only general who kept his Persian wife when Alexander ordered his generals to marry Persian women. Of all the successor kingdoms they probably had the best opportunity to survive, it was just ruined by stupid in-fighting and bad defeats. @@IslenoGutierrez You must be joking. The Lebanese, sure, I guess they got some Phoenician blood in them. Palestinians however have no relation to Canaanites whatsoever. Arabic is a seperate language from Canaanite altogether. Not to mention that the name "Canaan" is mentioned in ancient Egyptian documents from the bronze age (3300 BC-1200 BC) and the name "Arabs" first appears in 853 BC in documents about the battle of Qarqar.

      @@JonasR001 The Palestinians are not ethnic Arabs, they are the indigenous people of the land that were conquered by Arabs spreading Islam. They were Christians before that (a good amount of Palestinians are still Christians). The Palestinians adopted the Arab identity, they are not actual Arabs from the Arabian peninsula. On DNA tests, they cluster WITH Canaanite DNA samples. Not near, but WITH them. Same as the Lebanese. Jews don’t want to admit that, but peer-reviewed DNA studies don’t lie. Lebanese also claim to be Arabs too, and we know for certain that they are heavily Canaanite ancestry. Lebanese samples on a recent scientific DNA study pegged Lebanese as 93% Canaanite. Lebanese are not Arabs either. Nor are Syrians or Jordanians. They are all native Levantines that were conquered and adopted new identities as Arabs. DNA studies supports this. And we know that the Jews were expelled from Israel, so that leaves the Palestinians to be the descendants of the ancient Canaanites, the only native indigenous people in Israel/Palestine. Well to be fair, the Lebanese could be seen as the indigenous people of Israel/Palestine (Canaan) too along with Palestinians since they are mostly Canaanite DNA.

Most of what we know about the southern the canaanites comes from Jewish sources (whether it's the Bible, or modern israeli archaeology). So, you'd have to include the jews in that presentation, too. To your great disappointment. A little bit comes from the Egyptian, so we can include them too. So I think you'd be better off sticking t just the Phoenicians. • @TheRosatus
      @TheRosatus 2 года назад +13

      It's actually more impressive. This video is really short and miss lot of details, plus it doesn't include the two great revolts against Rome that came~ 230 and 290 years later. Bar Kokhba revolt against Rome is one of its hardest wars ever, very few of its many wars actually comparable to that. It last 3.5 years , Rome had to declare mandatory conscription for its first time in 100 years, Rome concentrated half of its entire military in Judea in effort to win this war. It lost two legions and almost all other legions suffered heavy causalities. For the only time in history perhaps, when the Roman emperor then, Hadrian, wrote report to the Roman Senate he didn't sign it with "Me and my legions are well" and instead only signed "I'm well". When decades later Roman emperors felt that their war challenges are too big their advisers suggested them to remember with what Hadrian had to deal in Judea. Tuetoberg victory wasn't that great. The Roman legions didn't came for war, the were scattered along 20 km long line and among them many civilians walked- they were ambushed by 80000 Germans led by Arminius a German who was officer in the Roman army and appointed to something like being Rome representative to the German tribes in Germany- he invited the Romans just to Ambush them in territory they really were unfamiliar with. It was impressive but short, last only 3 days. Rome was in shock, but few years later sent its legions to avenge the fallen legions and it was really one sided- in very short time they destroyed most of the tribes that were involved in that. Arminius escaped (just to be killed shortly after by fellow Germans of a different tribe than his) but his wife was taken prisoner. In any case, the most impressive war, military speaking, against Rome- was this of Hannibal, and in my opinion it was perhaps world's most important war. Had Hannibal won, history would look so different. Same can be said about the destruction of the second Jewish temple by Titus- it dramatically changed the path of global history.
