  • Hi, does your Hyundai have a knocking from the steering when you turn it left to right? The chances are the plastic bushing in the motor has failed, this is a common issue but Hyundai will charge you to replace the motor!
In this video, I show you the full repair guide for the removal of the column and the bush itself. Hope this helps

I've done this and it was a PITA. Give this guy his due, he's working on his dad's car, same as I did. The garage wouldn't touch it because a £2 part costs £800 to replace. The other online videos show changing a left hand drive version. The engineering for a right hand drive was an afterthought and way more difficult than you'd hope. There's lots of sharp pressed steel back there. I'm 58 and the calf killing cramps diving upside-down into the footwell caused the other end of me to wonder about the other end. If you have small hands then you're doubly blessed. Fitting was reversal of everything bad that happened. Good luck.

Hi! Is it really necessary to remove the column? cheers!

Yes, unfortunately it is. It's not a difficult task if you have some basic skills and tools. No fancy tools needed, just time and patience. I would do it again because it's a lovely car to drive.@@leandroamaral5917

@@leandroamaral5917 on my version ((see post above) the steering upper column comes out but the motor assembly stayed in the car and i replaced the motor bushing in the car. However all the same steps need to be followed except for extracting the motor assembly, theres plenty of room to do it in place once its detached from the hinge

Thanks for this guide. Was a lil fiddly to do but if you have done a lot of repair work its not too bad. (circa 3 leisurely hours and about 42 swear words)
Key additions that i didnt see in the video ~(they might be there)
When removing the plate over the brake pedal that obscures the hinge bolt, you need to remove the brake pedal release sensor, this has an electrical connector and a pull lock tab. it then twists 90deg and pulls out.
The plate retaining nuts are the most difficult part by far next to possible getting the motor assembly back on the hinge bolt. A good set of offset spanners (10mm) will help.
Another tip, in this video the whole assembly came out as one, in my 2012 i40 estate, the steering column comes away from the motor assembly making things a bit more manageable. So its worth checking this on your vehicle as it would have saved me time if i knew. Basically once all the wheel wiring was disconnected from the column, undoing the 2 retaining nuts either side of the column would allow the front to drop down and pull out. Leaving just the motor assembly in there, this gives more access and visibility and its also a lighter assembly to handle.
Also be sure to put the wheel back on straight :) mine was 90degrees off! oops ((fixed by popping off the airbag, undoing the main steering nut and rotating it true, only a 5 min job)
Anyhow great vid saved me loads with only a £5 part!

Thanks for this. I have this exact problem in my 2012 i40. My dealer quoted me £3000 for a new steering column. Code for ‘don’t want to do it’ me thinks. Beyond my capabilities, now I know its not major, I’ve decided to put up with it, annoying but an 11 yr old car… Thanks again…

old post but you pull the release tab on the front of the brake sensor, then twist the sensor 90deg AC and remove

Shame you don't show more under steering wheel so we can see what you're doing. I was trying to fix mine today and got to where i just needed to remove that nut around the back of the motor but there appears to be some brace in place. Im not sure if it is standard but it looks like it isn't.
Is there any definitive instructions for fixing this issue on UK cars? i40 estate 2012

Same. I got all the plastics off and all wiring. But couldn't get to the back bolt as there was no room. Put it all back together. Waste of time and stress. Did you end up sorting yours. If so how?

hi just wondered if you knew where to get the part from in this country, did look on eBay but it wasn't clear if it fitted the i40 model when I put search in with my model which is the same as your dads, it came up with OEM 563152K000FFF when look at item there was a list of compatible cars and the Hyundai i40 wasn't up there, but that keeps coming up. Just wonder if you did find a place in this country to buy the item.

I had the same issue. On reflection tho. They all look exactly the same. But as the i40 wasn't listed that's why I went for the Germany one. But the others should fit. Nthey look like they are printed on a 3d printer anyway!!

@@rstv84 Hi thanks for getting back to me did buy one which had my car listed, it had the same code on the package but is the original. I do think you are right about the copied ones they do look the same, and may work but when I put my car details in it said would not fit but still with the same code. Maybe they hadn't updated the models because wasn't official
