  • 1982 MK1 Volkswagen Caddy Pickup with 1.6L Diesel... Can it be brought back to life after a lifetime of abuse and being abandoned for 25years?
    Engine Cylinder Hone: amzn.to/3w67DbL
Valve Spring Compressor I almost bought: amzn.to/3bmbDg8
    Triple Square/XZN sockets: amzn.to/3eorxXY
    Thoughts:
This was abandoned over 25years ago, 800 miles from home after a life of neglect. There are a ton of redneck repairs but they will be sorted out. The engine runs fantastic now and thankfully the injection pump seams to be in great shape. I think it was parked do to a bent valve(low performance) and overheating issues or maybe it was the starter that made them throw in the towel. What do you think?
What I did in this video:
ENGINE: Honed block to accept standard piston rings. Knurled (dimpled) pistons 3 and 4 to take out any slop do to minor oversize do to clean up. Fixed warped head. Lapped and put in 1 new exhaust valve on cylinder 2. Cleaned injectors. Checked clearances for everything. New head gasket, head bolts, timing belt, water pump, hoses, etc.
TRUCK: Purged fuel tank. Fixed shifter. Fixed rack pinion mount. Lubricated CV axles.

Hey Moe, this is one of my favorites. Besides Ginger, the parts I liked the best were the shoe!!, the 11 mm, when you said 'Guten Tite' and when you finally got her on the road. I am never going to do this or even know what you were doing in every part but it was so much fun to watch, sort of like Mechanical Archeology, LOL You did a great job of explaining and videoing the project, thumbs up.😎👌

I had the entire neighbor excited when I was 16 pulling the front end of my 1965 Ford apart to put disc brake axles under it. That's the fun of doing it in the street, you get to meet people and talk to them. I'm actually watching your Cadillac Video right now. Isn't California pretty brutal about working on anything these days?

@@sixtyfiveford lol I hear you, more about storing the tools and stuff. I guess I get my stair climber in and cardio at least lol. And to answer your question on working on anything. I have no idea... Didn't ask, just went for it. I'll ask for forgiveness god for bid. ha. Nah we're not supposed to have it on stands or anything but I think that's more refereed to "leaving" it on jack stands. So I always lower stuff before bed. Plus my rims may get robbed if I don't. HAHA. I think they frown on working on cars in the street, but I've talked with plenty of police driving by and all of my neighbors at this point. Still haven't gotten any feeling of annoyance. I had a couple of buddies who each bought one of these new. One engine was no end of trouble and the other was trouble-free - I can't recall the problems. Fuel mileage varied from one vehicle to the next. VW had valve stem seal issues in that era, and didn't protect the fuse box from water resulting in a lot of corrosion problems. Diesels looked very attractive back in those days of fuel shortages and higher prices. People would do ANYTHING for fuel economy. VW bottom ends were not problematic as I recall, and they weren't as sensitive to fuel quality as were Chevy's attempt at consumer diesels. Car makers were still learning about these and went to school on their customers' dimes.
Nice work. I'd be tempted to repurpose that engine.

I had two of these, the 81 was the best. I drove it for quite a while, then it was my daughter's first car and then my son's. Both of them wish they had it back. 55mpg but you didn't want to pull out in front of anybody and if you wanted to go over 55 you had to draft a truck. There was a very well know VW mechanic in a near by town that was extending the cab by putting front doors off of a 2dr rabbit on one. The front doors on the PU are from a 4dr rabbit, 2dr's are quite a bit longer. I happened upon him just as he was starting his project and told him "I always thought it would be good to splice in the top of a rabbit convertible" and he thought that was a great idea. Went by 3 years later and saw the end result it was the nicest VW Rabbit Truck going!

Cleans and lubricates without conductivity. spray some in, pull fuse, spray a bit more, then insert/remote the fuse several times and it's likely to be good to go.

Good to see some more idi's living on. I've got 3 of them. (2 turbo motors) those pumps will live forever as long as you keep the water out of it. Mk2s had 2 water seperators, might want to look into the later fuel filters. Has an internal seperator in the filter. Many gas stations have rusty diesel tanks that can sell you water by accident.

@@sixtyfiveford thanks for sharing the fix on that cylinder head!! I've never thought about what would cause the warpage, simply accepted it as the best reason to keep a solid cooling system intact.
Had to send this vid to some fellow VW diesel folks. All of whom are blown away at the sound logic and ingenuity of your fix.
What's better about your method than what machine shops will do is no line boring cam journals, no cutting valves to a "custom" stem height, no waiting for shim kits in the mail (if you can find NOS german ones), and no aftermarket cylinder head that could have subpar QC or metallurgy in critical places like valve seats.
      👏👏👍

Can we all give Ginger credit for her amazing video work on this one?

About 15 years ago i had a friend who bought a 1990 Golf GTD with the turbo version of this engine. The timing belt had snapped, so he didn’t pay much more than scrap value. Except for the engine, the car was in excellent condition. We replaced two bent valves, gaskets, belts etc. and had it running again in a matter of days. It was amazingly fast for a diesel of that age - one night, out of curiosity, we took it out on the highway and gave it the shit. When we hit the rev limiter in 5th gir, the speed was well above 100 mph. When driving at normal speeds, he often got close to 70MPG on the highway. It had VWs ‘’4+E’’ transmission; the 5th gear was labeled "E" for Economy. From memory, i think the gear spacing was somewhat unusual, where the first 4 gears had a normal spacing and the E gear somewhat longer, the idea being you would accelerate to the desired speed on the lower gears, and then, provided the speed was high enough, drop it into "E" during cruising. He had the car for a few years and drove the shit out of it, and sold it with a nice profit. Good memories.

Great set of videos. Been watching you at least ten years. Thanks for the education. Found the piston knurling fascinating. And for the first time, I saw a dash having an old fashioned clock complete with a sweep second hand. Haha. The cylinders? Seemed to have developed their own personalities! You should have nicknamed them! Anyway, take care and thanks again.

the dimpling is a great tip. i re ringed a 6.5L detroit diesel. one cylinder could have used some dimpling.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 года назад +2

That's my own technique. Maybe it'll work, but I don't see why not nor the difference between this and knurling. I actually Googled it to see if anyone else dimples and couldn't find anyone other than the knurling machines. And only old timers talk about the knurling machines and most are relocated to the backs of home shops.

I had a mystery charging problem for years in mine and could figure it out. Finally found that the alternator bracket and bolts were insulated from the block. They relied on a braided ground strap which had corroded through. They had a weird almost backward voltage system. The horn was that way too....just FYI if you run into some issues.

    • @sixtyfiveford

I thought it was weird to have the braided strap and figured it was just for redundancy.

I am just now finishing the video, When you said I might have to push in the clutch I had to laugh because I have a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo (951) and yeah I guess in Deutschland people know not to hit the starter with it in gear because there is no lockout on the clutch pedal and yes it will try to start without pushing in the clutch, lol.

They always caught my eye. It's definitely a crude vehicle even when new. It's easy to forgot how budget these VW's, Toyota's, Datsun's of the era really were. My 65 and 78 feel like Cadillacs in build quality compared to these. I think most just got put away/retired for more modern luxuries.

The fuel economy you are going to get will more than pay for your time and effort. I drove one my boss had 20 years ago that got 40+ mpg town and 65 mpg or so highway. It isn't a power house, but it will get you from a to b. Great purchase, you will get a lot of use out of your VW pickup.

I transplanted a 1.5D rabbit engine into my mk2 Jetta automatic (removed 1.8L petrol engine) it's lazy as hell, but a real fuel saver. I also have a dismantled 1.6TD engine which I'm yet to assemble. I hope it all works as the previous owner said but I'll only know for sure one assembled.

That little truck will pay you back and then some. These VW Diesel engine are made to last forever and 50-60 mpg. There was a guy who had one and like he had it long time.
I didn’t see what weight motor oil you are using but for a diesel I highly recommend shell Rotella 15w40 in it so the engine will live longer.
Enjoyed the video and have a Blessed One Sir. Like to see more videos on this VW rabbit pickup.
