- 1982 MK1 Volkswagen Caddy Pickup with 1.6L Diesel... Can it be brought back to life after a lifetime of abuse and being abandoned for 25years?

Thoughts:
This was abandoned over 25years ago after a life of neglect. There are a ton of redneck repairs but they shine in comparison to the mouse damage. It took a TON of work and hours upon hours to get rid of the smell. I bought top of the line expensive commercial enzyme deodorizers that did little. Steam cleaning with all the interior removed was all that really worked. I still believe the engine has a ton of life left and will continue moving forward. To free up the engine it took nearly 6 months of messing around with oil concoctions. In the end Molasses was the key and that took around 2.5-3 weeks. I did look around for engine replacements and contemplated swaps but everything fell through, so I'm moving forward with what I have.

I had no idea molasses eats rust. I swear I learn something new every time I watch your videos
Me too something new every day
It's about the only thing that won't eat aluminum but eats rust.
Molasses is high in sulphur. With water likely forms a mild sulphuric acid solution.
I know right this guy is a super genius the Beard of knowledge is growing
Enjoyed that, looking forward to the next installment! These Mk1 Caddys were everywhere here in the UK for decades; most were run into the ground by or rusted away. The only ones you see now are restored examples, and they fetch a lot of money. The front end is different on the European version, with round lights and a slimmer bumper.
work vehicles didn't get much love ✌
That shoe sole is fine German craftsmanship. I’m fairly confident, it’s OEM.
They do like to do stuff differently.
Those old VW diesels can last forever.
Very true.
I saw lots of those in South Africa a few years ago.
Learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.
Hey Thanks.
You have the heart of a Lion!
It is not just about standing up against the mice. It is about the rust and all of the mechanical challenges, registration issues...
Wow!
Hey Thanks.
Thanks for the molasses tip! I had no idea.
It's about the only thing that won't harm the aluminum piston.
Excited to see you bring this back to life!
Hey Thanks.
Ive done this on diesel Rabbits several times. Great project. Love that it had AC.
That's awesome.
Your patience and persistence is somewhere between admirable and insane :-). I was cheering when the engine spun over 👍
You and me both!
We owned 3 red ones when I was young, Id like to have another 50 mpg vehicle again.
That's awesome.
I get a kick out of watching these kinds of videos..I have been binge watching vise grip garage seeing all the old cars and trucks being brought back to life
VGG has a extra level of entertainment with his commentary.
👍 to the girl sitting in that crap steering the truck onto the trailer.
Hey Thanks. She's a good sport.
Great job fitting a 4 point into a 12 point, that wouldn't ever worked for me right at the start. Glad you bought the right tool for that job!
Thats going to be a sweet mini truck when you get it going those rabbits were bulletproof!!! Great video looking forward to the next one!!
Thanks 👍
Can't wait to see how this turns out. I love the random obscure projects.
this video was super informative. the tensioning during penetration fluid and the triple square bit are great tricks.
An inspiration for all of us staring at unfinished projects. Time is an invaluable asset for human beings. After all the work getting the engine unstuck it would be a shame if you don't finish it, but two years is a long time to work on something so it'll get done!
Hey Thanks.
Really enjoyed the video! I found myself watching so intently when it finally came time to see if the crank would move. Definitely very resourceful, with building your own square bit too. Can't wait to see the next video on this project. Hat's off to you!
Thank you!
Amazing! You have more patience than I would have had for this little truck.
Thanks 👍
Thanks for sharing. I enjoy watching you videos.
Thanks for watching!
That's some significant perseverance can't wait to see you get it running
Hey Thanks.
Can't wait to see how you bring her back to life. Am with you on the mice issues: those are such destructive critters when it comes to vehicles. 👍
Yeah, no more mice vehicles for me.
I love hard work! I could watch it all day!
Glad you enjoy it!
Awesome, looking forward to part 2
Glad you enjoyed it
Really cool. Can't wait to see it run.
He’s on the “Will it run path?!” Lol
great job as usual, had no idea on molasses. 1st though was a great Diesel engine for anything, generator etc.. but a small pickup is awesome too have.
I used to commute into Boston and everyday, was raced by a guy in one of these all tricked out with 16v engine, handled great! 👍
Very cool.
Brilliant content once again.
I always learn something new👍🏼
Awesome, thank you!
What an awesome video ! Thanks for showing us what time can accomplish ! Great tips aswell ! 👍🙂
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so nice to see! Got the same exact (Silver) caddy as a project sitting for years after noticing severe frame damage from rust, keep up the work they are getting rare
It's unfortunate the cab upper has rust as everything underneath the truck is rust free. I can see with all the pinch welds why these rust so bad.
Great job on freeing up the engine! Good tips as well. I've had several of those trucks, and they're great little rigs. The linkage parts are available to make it all work as intended. Once you get it all sorted, it should be a great truck! Also, seats from a mk1, 2, or 3 chassis car will fit, including the GTI. For extra headroom, find some corrado seats, they sit really low in the car.
Also you can fit say 1.9tdi engine in it, but that does mean with 1.3-1-6l models that you need to replace front suspension parts, sub frame? and obviously wiring harness needs to be spliced from two cars to work on this, but its duable just bit hard. End result you get newer engine with more power.
1.3-1.6L, 1.8-2.0L, 2.2-3.0 are essentially part fittings so 1.8L engine fits to any gearbox in that scale with out major modifications, should be bolt on and this applies all the way to 2000 models, not sure about new shit, but that is shit so we dont talk about it.
Patience and determination puts a lot of obstacles to rest, nice stuff bro.
I swear I could hear your pup going "nope" every time she jumped through the cab lol.
Take care. Peace.
Thanks!
This looks like a fun project. I know I am enjoying watching it anyways, Thanks for the video !
Thanks for watching!
Diesel Creek did a video just like this about a month ago. His had a dead rabbit in the passenger seat, but fired right off.
Yeah, I saw that a few days ago. His looked bad!
Yes I think Matt’s was quite a bit more rusty
Previous owner: “It ran when I parked it but that was years ago.“ Oh, wait! That was me! 😂
Ooh that smell😵 Looks like a heavy duty project. You should do well as I see you're a resourceful kinda guy. Good luck! I'll watch for the next video.
Cheers 🙂
Thanks.
These were great trucks! My friend’s dad had a Diesel Caddy he used as a commuter vehicle. He got 45-50 MPG! Top speed was only 55-60 MPH, though. Still, a very practical vehicle. I look forward to more videos about this truck.
Very cool!
Moe , this was cool. I loved how you made a rebar square bit. The bailing wire and shoe repair you found was funny. You can always use your shoe goop on it. 😎👌
Thanks 👍. The shoe sole really surprised me.
Nice project to see her run and in working condition can't wait for the outcome.
You and me both!
Glad you’re employing the kids to help with your projects and passing your knowledge on, it’s really sad how todays youth has no clue about anything mechanical.
Well, sir, that was a really nice choice of yours! Great job to come. Cheers!
Thank you kindly!
“ Has oil... should run like a top!” 🤣😅😂 Nice find, I’d love to have a VW Caddy, been on the hunt for years to acquire a decent one.
I looked hard for one years ago and couldn't find anything that was reasonably priced. So this popped up at an auction and no one bid, so I did.
diesel creek (I'm pretty sure that's the name) did one just like this. These are pretty cool little trucks. Should be a great project can't wait to see more
Matt aka Diesel Creek
@@HJZ75driver YES!!!! I know who is how but get his channel and Salvage workshop mixed up I say one when I mean the other and vis versa.
His was pretty destroyed with rust and dead animals.
Looking forward to this one! Thanks for sharing
You and me both!
Thanks for sharing and for saving an Old VW. I want one of those. That is a Project and a half. Hopefully, it will work out for you and you will not have to put a lot $$ into, and you will have a nice little truck. I see no way of getting out the "Sweat Equity". Can't wait to see more of these "episodes".
Yeah, the sweat equity budget will be blown for sure.
wow, over 2 years of waiting, you sir have great patience.
Awesome Moe...love it man!! 😊
Thanks!!
The Florida pool pump motor repair guy approved ! that was good info
My brother in law had a VW Rabbit with a similar, maybe even the same engine. He drove it for years then loaned it to my Mom and she drove it until she couldn't drive anymore then he drove it again. 3 or 4 engine rebuilds. Super reliable little car.
I only worked on the starter cause Mom was stuck in Indiana and I went down to help. Starter was right up front and easy to reach. Pulled the Bendix and flipped the copper washer over so it made contact again. The starter motor might still be on it. Great find. If nothing else it will be worth putting the time in it. 😁😁😎😎
that dog is awesome! a buddy had a diesel rabbit about the same year and exact same color. crude but 50 mpg and reliable.
Hey Thanks. With Fuel prices raising, it might have been a wise investment.
When the dog jumped in and immediately jumped out 😂 seriously laughed out loud. This will be a fun series to watch.
To her it's just a brick in the driveway. She knows it doesn't run.
I had one just like it back in the mid 90's
Loved they little rig.
Love the mk1 cars, ive had 3 of them so far. i keep coming back they might not be fast but they sure are fun.
Sure are ✌
Awesome video. Really cool trick making that square drive socket from the rebar.
Hey thanks
can't wait for part 2 most people would have given up i always like the vw diesel the MPG is incredible
good call on stopping on the triple square. I have had some of those head bolt break triple squares back in the day. If you would have fired that without changing those rings it probably would have RUN AWAY..... so much oil bypassing the rings once it ran it would rev up until it ran out of oil....
Nice project
Have fun with the wiring😁
Luckily it doesn't look like these mice liked to eat wires.
Awesome little project.
Interesting that you've had it for so long.
Hope you can bring her round and drive it again.
Hey Thanks.
Marvel oil is awesome too for penetration of seized motors, as you probably know. Another Great video !
Hey Thanks.
Moe i have to give you 11 out of 10 for determination and effort, but you are mad lol :-D
It will take buckets of work to make it nice again, but i know you will save it.
Im amazed that piston came out in one peice, hopefully the bore can be recovered.
Thanks. The bore looks like it'll come back no problem.
Dawm I’m definitely following this build 👏
Hey Thanks.
So happy I found your channel, subscribed within minutes...there is so much useful information...I watched the whole vw caddy truck series in one afternoon..subscribed for life, you're gold man,
Awesome! Thank you!
Very nice project :) cheers from Montréal ,Québec!!:)
Ok. Now I’m caught up. Cant wait to see it running!
You and me both!
Thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Awesome video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
I have an '84 Rabbit with the 1.6 diesel! I've been meaning to do a head gasket job on it and I think you've inspired me to just finally dive in. I have the Bentley service manual for any rebuild specs info if you need them!
That's awesome!
Could this be the beginning of car revival videos? I am really liking this one!
That's a cool little beast.
I've always liked these old VW Rabbit Trucks with their Uni bodies. Had a custodian at Delco Remy who had a gas version and he LOVED that little truck. Looking forward to hearing that diesel pop over for the first time. Cheers Moe! Zip~
Me too; can't wait to hear it run. Don't do much with diesels and actually don't really like them. They always sound like they're broken.
@@sixtyfiveford After you drive it a while you will. When your driving along and you realize it's been two weeks since you filled up and you still have 1/4 tank of fuel you'll smile!!
cool car, cool project,, fun to make it drive!
Definitely!
What an awesome video!
👍👍👍
Thank you! 👍
Love all your Videos.
This a nice video, liked and subscribed, I want to see more of this VW, had a 1.6 petrol model
same. waiting for more content ✌
nice process... i'm learning and enjoying
Hey Thanks.
Golf Caddy, I always thought these were based on the Rabbit, learn something new everyday! I knew a roughneck in the early 80's that drove one of these and ran it on rig diesel since it was free for him, that was 1981 the truck was like a year or two old then...time gets away, lol. I worked for a rig moving company, Turner Bros.
Good work n good tips
Hey Thanks.
Excellent video. Molasses tip is great. Hanta huffing was a little worrying.
Hey Thanks. Don't know if I would ever get another vehicle with mouse damage.
I've owned three Volkswagen pickup trucks in my lifetime a 1980 automatic 1.6 gas 1980 sports truck black tire edition 1.8 L super close ratio 5 speed the automatic and sports truck had air conditioning aftermarket on the automatic factory on the black tire edition and an 81 diesel I remember the trucks finally loved them but I am 6-ft 3-in tall and they're in lies my dilemma I was just too tall like my 82 Cabriolet 85 golf diesel 85 golf gas and 80 rabbit convertible I no longer have them I now drive a 2014 Chevrolet Volt This video brings back a lot of fun memories Enjoy
not the roomiest vehicle around :D
That must have been what was under the tarp in the one video you had. It's a good looking truck. Can't wait to see the progress you make on it. Mice are a pita.
Mice are so bad and destructive.
Looks like a fun one!
Yes, tons of fun..
Ginger's response was fun as always
She knows it just a brick in the driveway.
fun video sir - I like the revivals - big fan of Derek and VGG (vice grip garage) for that reason. Someday I'll have a garage I can work in probably. Godspeed
Thanks Man.
I finally saw one of those Smyth utes on the road a couple of years ago.
They've always interested me even though I don't particularly like VWs or even the Dodge and I think Subaru versions they have.
Makes me want to never get rid of my '84 S-10 Sport looking at trucks today.
Cool project.
Pats for the doggo 👍
Thanks Gareth.
Nice find 👍
Thanks 👍
Can’t wait to see it!!!
Cant wait for the next episode. I like the long video. As always..good stuff bud
Glad you enjoyed it
Mouse Sucker 2.0? Well, I'll be dipped!
I saw one of these back in the 80's that had been pimped out and had huge drag racing slicks on the rear wheels. Which was funny because it's a front wheel drive vehicle.
That's funny.
I bought one of these new in 1988 I think. Different rear window, dash an steering wheel than yours. Great little 1/2 Ton truck. Was fast for a Diesel 1.6L. Pulled like a Train! Mine never had a A/C option. I still have a Workshop Manual for it if you need any info. The head bolts are Splines by the way. Used a great deal on VW vehicles at the time.
Nice Doggo by the way, my broken coated Jack Russell Terrier went everywhere in VW Caddy with me.
Hey Thanks. I'm excited to see it run and drive.
Nice square drive, I love a custom tool. I think Renault oil plugs are 8mm internal squares, so hold onto that! The proper 12 point internal drivers are called "spline bits" if anyone is searching for them.
Pretty cool little thing, well worth saving. Though one thing I never liked about VWs (and they still do this) is how they use different fastners everywhere, I've taken door panels off on the newer VWs that have torx on the bottom, philips on the top and a 10mm behind the handle... Not to mention how bad a triple square bolt is on suspension after 15 years of salted roads lol.
I know exactly what you mean and it has been frustrating.
You must really really like this truck 👍
I see it more as a challenge than something I really like.
I enjoyed this very much.
Hey Thanks.
Surface rust is not rust is prolly the most northern thing ever lol. I feel that being in michigan. You certainly gave her more love than anyone else ever would have moe. She better do a burnout in the next video for all the work you put into her lol
These Southern guys who think surface rust matters.
Wish my Rabbit had AC! That truck looks pretty rough, but I bet it'll clean up nice! subbed!
It does!
Very awesome! I know where 3 of them sit. All diesels and the guy won't let them go. I always wanted one. There are swaps with the later model ALH or 1Z 1.9 Turbo engines. Maybe one day I will find one. Also getting a title is easy from Vermont. You don't have to live there to get it titled and tagged there. Guys get skoolie conversions and motorcycle titles from Vermont.
thought they were easy to find in the US
@@JunkVWs you can find them just not real easy.
Love it can't wait for the next video
Hey Thanks.
wow that was a great video!!!
Glad you liked it!
