I've had a handful of these DR. Brand chippers and they've all been great. This is the smallest that I've used from them. But also the Troy-Bilt Tomahawk made by Garden Way (30+ years ago now)that I showed is the only other chipper I would ever use.

My Dad, who would be 96 if he were still here, was that way with manuals. Garden hose purchased from Sears in 1972? Had he sales slip and the paperwork including the Lifetime guarantee. Mowers, dishwasher, washer, dryer, hot water heater, all in that pouch under the phone books, in the kitchen cabinet.
I'm 46 and I have every manual for everything I have ever bought. I've even spent hundreds of dollars on John Deere service manuals for the tractor my grandfather bought.
You so correct. No one wants to spend any time to fix things. I was watching a video where these two guys rode motorcycles across China and didn't have a clue about anything mechanical. They relied on locals to help them with simple issues you and I could have taken care of in minutes. Crazy. Love the saves you do. That's a pretty impressive machine.
@wyattoneable No-one is a bit strong. There are still huge swathes of people like us who still try and fix stuff if it's saveable. The problem is so much modern stuff *isn't* easily serviceable without hacking the crap out of it.
That's so true. I've watched a few things were guys take adventures and have the most basic mechanical issues. They're dumbfounded. I guess that adds to the video/adventure.
I find the same thing in our area, nobody knows how to troubleshoot a fault that a machine has! Just one small thing fails, and they throw it to the dump. Luckily we have a space called a "share shed", where people feeling guilty about throwing lightly used items (especially power tools and equipment) away without a chance for someone to recyle it back into a useable item. We have recycled many $K of stuff back into service. If you can find the model # and serial # and the make of the item on a tag somewhere on the machine, the odds are good you can find the parts you need at a pretty low cost. We are having a lot of fun doing it, especially over the winter months when we have 4 feet of snow outside.
We just got a used one a week ago. I think the owner used it for one job and it sat for the next 3 years. For $14 we are just going to change out the carb with brand new. Ours is a direct drive and will only do 1/2' brush. But we did get it ridiculously cheap. So we're happy. Going to really enjoy come leaf raking time when we can just grind it all up into one load.
Your practical hints, tricks & advice are so valuable & greatly appreciated! In addition to the mechanical advise on the chipper, the scoring of the small branches so they bend & feed into the hopper is really cool. I was given a Trow-Bilt leaf vacuum & chipper with a bad 5hp flat-head Tecumseh that is direct drive, w/1 in. shaft. I may engine swap it to a predator & convert to a belt drive for the reasons you mentioned. To keep it direct drive, I would have to buy a $75 adapter (3/4" to 1") anyways. Might as well put a 1"jackshaft & pillowblocks for the same or less $ & continue modifying from there. Thanks!
I'm glad you like the videos of me tinkering around. If you did do an upgrade from the Tecumseh you might as well just go with the 8 horsepower Predator as that has a 1-in shaft. I think that motor goes for around $100 more than the predator 212 which is in reality only around 5-6 horsepower. That will be a noticeable increase in power and chipping larger 3-in. I have owned a handful of those red Troy-Bilt lawn vac chippers; they're very well built machines. The exact same machine came with an 8 horsepower Briggs if I recall. The 5 horsepower was the slightly cheaper model but I don't think anything else changed. They could have put a smaller lighter flywheel on the chipper.
Half the reason a lot of younger folk don't keep the manuals is because nowadays they're in 50 languages and have no useful information. You have to go online to download the *actual* manual. It sucks.
Two pages telling you not to stick your hand in the spinny bit, one telling you the paint causes animals in lab cancers, one page of legalese saying you signed away your rights when you opened the box, and then the same thing in French, Spanish, and German.
I kindof want a little chipper like that but whenever I think about paying for one, I remind myself that it since my town will haul limbs away for free, I should just go find someone with chips they want to get rid of.

You can't go wrong with pretty much with any belt drive unit. It's one of those things where all the super old ones were belt drive and to save a buck in the 90's they went direct drive.
The magic internet taught me to slide a length of small diameter vinyl hose on the end of the spark plug, and use for a handle to install spark plugs in those impossible-to-reach ports. Works.
I had 8 mpowers I got rid of when my health gave up. All ran wonderful but I can't fix them any more. Two were 85 models and still ran. My pal with his own saw shop got them. Ran them last week. I miss them but the battery jobs suits us better now and I had the books for them. Good fix and Ginger had one too! BGlessings!
The Troybuilt Tomahawk is a great machine . My dad bought one brand new in the mid '80's . He still owns it and uses it. He rebuilt the original engine on it and straight piped it with a flapper topper to keep rain out of the exhaust.
I can see that sheet metal pan the unit sitting on flexing away. DR does take some shortcuts. It's also nice to have a larger hopper too, for dumping leaves and such into.
Good video. I have a 5hp Tomahawk and an 8hp direct drive. The direct drive snapped its crankshaft. Got them them both for free at our town transfer station. Yours works real nice. Good Luck, Rick
This week I replaced my 5hp MTD direct drive chipper which I've owned for 30 years and my dad owned it for at least 10 years before me. I tried re-powering it with a Predator motor, but I wasn't satisfied with the results (not good clearances). But I found the same model a bit newer than mine and in great shape. It works well for my needs shredding small limbs from time to time. Belt drive units are pretty pricey in my neck of the woods.
I shake my head every time I see someone throw away paperwork for appliance or tool. I even save packaging for 1-2 months to make sure I have something to send it back in if it breaks
I have a horrible habit of saving the boxes. I started breaking them down so they're flat. Problem is the last couple times I've sold something that was 10-15 years old with and offered the original box. The people just look at me like I have two heads. They don't want it. But anytime I have somebody that is 70 plus years old come buy something, they always ask me where the manual is. 20 years ago I'd print the manuals off for everything I fixed and sold.

ME , on the other hand, I have SAVED every instruction manual for everything that I have ever bought! I think I learned my lesson growing up with a dad who threw away everything and growing up in a time when you couldn’t get on the internet and look up old owners manuals. Every time a piece of equipment broke, daddy would take it to the shop and have it fixed. I would always tell him if we had the manual, we could probably figure out how to fix it!

Man, I had no idea there were belt drive wood chippers. Starting the direct drive ones is a pain in the backside, hand, arm, leg! Guess I’ll be on the lookout for a belt drive chipper.
Yep your right can't beat those Troy Bilt and those DR are great too . I have both but my DR has a Briggs opposed twin cylinder . The Troy Bilt does chipp smaller chips though .

So my pops always kept the manuals. I always threw them out because he used a drawer in one of the toolboxes for them. Honestly since he has alzheimers now and im spending more time with him in the shop working on my projects or his. I regret messing with him on those things, i should've just let it be and respected his decision. Always when doing stuff either mine or his/family I always go with his decision first just because.... Remember kids even if elders decisions seem wack or stupid at the time, later in life you will understand

It's common misconception about running 5w30. Literally the comment right above yours. The guy's riding mower engine went out ( started smoking/burning oil) after 7 years because he ran 5w30 and religiously changed it. That's meant for car engines that never exceed 215° f. Air-Cooled engines can Spike at 300 plus as the oil isn't simply a lubricant but also the coolant for the engine. If you read charts for temperature ratings on oil, if you push a oil to these temperatures in a car, you're supposed to only drive them maybe 100 mi before an oil change. A 5W oil is a 5weight base stock oil with viscosity improvers that get broken down by thermal breakdown and mechanical shearing. These small engines are running on 1950s tech with gears for the cam that shear the oil and air-cooled that exceed the oils s ratings. But I guess it doesn't really matter because everybody thinks an engine that easily goes 30 to 40-years is trash after only 7-10yrs
Sometimes you can deal with decent customers. I was selling a Riding Mower recently. The machine was working perfectly fine up until the guy came to look at it. About 15 minutes before he arrived, it started leaking gas. He came anyways and still bought it for my full asking price, but I did fix the carburetor. A $2.50, gasket failed due to the ethanol fuel. Ironically, the carburetor was the same style you are working on in this video.
I have my dads old direct drive chipper . Somereason i am thinking it is rated for branches all the way up to 3/4 inch or was it 1 inch. Dad used an old wiffle ball bat to push the last down in the chipper.

That's a great question. Towards the end of the video you saw the front's of a '59 and '66 F100's. The '66 Ford was originally bought just for parts for my '65 in the garage. I still plan on using the bed off of it as it's pristine but it was an impulse buy for I think $700. That was probably 15 to 20 years ago though. It runs and drives. The blue truck is a 1959 F100 that was just given to me by a family member as it had a transmission issue. I fixed the transmission issue and it has just been parked for 15 to 20 years. I start it on occasion but don't have a ton of plans for it.
i always look through the manuals briefly just to see if they contain anything of note which today tends not to be the case in fact more often then not the maintenance section just tells you to go back to the dealer

They've usually got contact information on where you can source parts if the company is still in exist and in existence. In south Georgia now not too many moons ago I used to live in Kearns and then Grantsville
I have about a dozen propane blow torches. The one I use in the video is a vintage Sears that gets way hotter than it should. The entire tip of the torch will start glowing red. My other torches will do it. It just takes way longer as they're not as focused of a flame.
If you're sold on multiviscosity, use at least 10w40 or 20w50 Automotive oils are meant for cars that are liquid cooled and have a maximum temperature of around 215° f. Air-Cooled engines the oil is the coolant along with the lubricant. They commonly see temperatures pushing almost 300° F. You have to remember these small engines are running on 1950s tech. There's really no difference. They have gears that shear and are splash lubricated in most situations. So you got thermal breakdown along with mechanical shearing viscosity breakdown. I guarantee if you sent it off a sample to Blackstone Labs with a multiviscosity and then with a straight SAE 30 you would see a huge difference in where material. But I guess it doesn't really matter because most people throw away an engine after 10 years anyway versus the 30 to 40 years all these small engines can easily last.
@@sixtyfiveford what about gy6 scooter engine ? I change oil every ~600miles or less of city "doordash" type of work. 10w40 is what I use. Cheapest I have on hand. Or mix of 5w40 and 10w40 if I have some leftovers from cars.
The bearing at the front/back likes to go out. The front's a really quick 15 minute fix. The back requires a little bit more because you have to remove the pulley. I think the actual part from Troy-Bilt is obsolete but there's replacements that fit perfectly for cheap.
@@pjkentucky The pallet shed is actually in excellent condition. Still standing. I'm not sure when I did that video but it's probably pushing 15 years now.
Problem is those are direct drive units and are notorious for snapping the crankshaft. The 310(and new 320) will have a 3/4 crankshaft that can only handle so much shock load. Above 7hp engines step up to 1" crankshaft (up to about 15hp). You just can't do as much with a direct drive. You'll notice the price jumps pretty dramatically once you get into belt drives mainly because they're so many more parts.

Yes and no. There's a lot of stuff that is either outdated after a few years and or not even possible to find online. A lot of older manuals as well can never be found as they were never uploaded by the manufacturer. There's that honeymoon period of 5-10years where stuff can be found and after that a lot of times there's no reason to maintain the resource.
SAE 30 It's safe to use down to 20°F. The biggest problem with using automotive oils is those are liquid cooled versus an air cooled engine. A car engine sits at maybe 215° F Max. An air-cooled engine will push 275 300°F and break that oil down. These Small engines are also running like a 1950s style engine with all the internals. The oil is the lubricant and the coolant for these air-cooled engines. They have gears that shear the oil and/ splash lubricated. This is all severely damaging to automotive motor oils. They add what is called viscosity improvers that essentially makes the oil stay thick as it warms up. These molecules get sheared and broken down mechanically and through thermal breakdown. You're then left with just the base stock oil. The chipper in this video the oil was a 5 weight max after it's breakdown (probably 5w30 to start). So running this was the same as running an SAE 5 and 100°F outside temperature.
The torque tester channel shows how old loctite really affects torque specs for the worse. I ruined my Craftsmans mower by running 5-30 syn. After 7 seasons, the engine is shot. I changed the oil, oil filter and air filter before every season.
True. Old manuals came in one language, had fun cartoons of people dieing from misuse, featured a parts breakdown with detailed photos with part numbers and then had a mailing address where you could order parts.
I use the chapstick tube style LockTite. TO funny I do the same thing when removing Oil Drain bolts like those. As fpr oil I always have used Rotella or Delo Diesel oil.

I used to buy and sell a lot more chippers and it got to the point where it wouldn't even touch a direct drive generally not even for free.

Top tip when using secateurs either manual or powered like your DeWalt ones, cut diagonally not at 90 degrees. Much easier to cut through.

I keep the manuals and I’m 65 so maybe that’s the cutoff age. Sure makes it easy to look up a part number.
DR also makes a large chipper for a 3 point hitch farm tractor. Good quality chipper for the money.

I don't know if I told you about these hose pliers I use. Harbor Freight part number 37909. I like them so much I bought a back-up set.

never ever had issues with synthetic oil in the summer, the problem comes when gas gets in it, been running 5w30 in everything for years
It's common misconception about running 5w30. Literally the comment right above yours. The guy's riding mower engine went out ( started smoking/burning oil) after 7 years because he ran 5w30 and religiously changed it. That's meant for car engines that never exceed 215° f. Air-Cooled engines can Spike at 300 plus as the oil isn't simply a lubricant but also the coolant for the engine. If you read charts for temperature ratings on oil, if you push a oil to these temperatures in a car, you're supposed to only drive them maybe 100 mi before an oil change. A 5W oil is a 5weight base stock oil with viscosity improvers that get broken down by thermal breakdown and mechanical shearing. These small engines are running on 1950s tech with gears for the cam that shear the oil and air-cooled that exceed the oils s ratings. But I guess it doesn't really matter because everybody thinks an engine that easily goes 30 to 40-years is trash after only 7-10yrs

I was selling a Riding Mower recently.
The machine was working perfectly fine up until the guy came to look at it.
About 15 minutes before he arrived, it started leaking gas.
He came anyways and still bought it for my full asking price, but I did fix the carburetor.
A $2.50, gasket failed due to the ethanol fuel.
Ironically, the carburetor was the same style you are working on in this video.
The most frustrating thing in the world when it works perfectly day after day and then the moment you go to sell it it craps out on you.

I have my dads old direct drive chipper . Somereason i am thinking it is rated for branches all the way up to 3/4 inch or was it 1 inch. Dad used an old wiffle ball bat to push the last down in the chipper.
Would love to get a good deal on one of those. Would be nice to mulch up the limbs on all the firewood I cut.

Great advice thankyou. I have been thinking getting a decent sized chipper and will look for a belt drive version. Also getting a cordless power pruner and mini chainsaw.
I didn't think I'd use the pruner as much as I have. Mini chainsaw as well.
Put a little grease on all carb gaskets and they will never tear or need replaced.

That's a great question. Towards the end of the video you saw the front's of a '59 and '66 F100's. The '66 Ford was originally bought just for parts for my '65 in the garage. I still plan on using the bed off of it as it's pristine but it was an impulse buy for I think $700. That was probably 15 to 20 years ago though. It runs and drives. The blue truck is a 1959 F100 that was just given to me by a family member as it had a transmission issue. I fixed the transmission issue and it has just been parked for 15 to 20 years. I start it on occasion but don't have a ton of plans for it.

i always look through the manuals briefly just to see if they contain anything of note which today tends not to be the case in fact more often then not the maintenance section just tells you to go back to the dealer

They've usually got contact information on where you can source parts if the company is still in exist and in existence. How do you get propane to burn so hot? My cheapo torch will heat copper for sweating, but not steel like that...
I have about a dozen propane blow torches. The one I use in the video is a vintage Sears that gets way hotter than it should. The entire tip of the torch will start glowing red. My other torches will do it. It just takes way longer as they're not as focused of a flame.

If you're sold on multiviscosity, use at least 10w40 or 20w50 Automotive oils are meant for cars that are liquid cooled and have a maximum temperature of around 215° f. Air-Cooled engines the oil is the coolant along with the lubricant. They commonly see temperatures pushing almost 300° F. You have to remember these small engines are running on 1950s tech. There's really no difference. They have gears that shear and are splash lubricated in most situations. So you got thermal breakdown along with mechanical shearing viscosity breakdown. I guarantee if you sent it off a sample to Blackstone Labs with a multiviscosity and then with a straight SAE 30 you would see a huge difference in where material. But I guess it doesn't really matter because most people throw away an engine after 10 years anyway versus the 30 to 40 years all these small engines can easily last.
@@sixtyfiveford what about gy6 scooter engine ? I change oil every ~600miles or less of city "doordash" type of work. 10w40 is what I use. Cheapest I have on hand. Or mix of 5w40 and 10w40 if I have some leftovers from cars.

Our Troybuilt goes through a belt every use.
The bearing at the front/back likes to go out. The front's a really quick 15 minute fix. The back requires a little bit more because you have to remove the pulley. I think the actual part from Troy-Bilt is obsolete but there's replacements that fit perfectly for cheap.

Wish DR would put a more powerful engine on the 310 pro, and the 410 pro. They put a 9.2 Hp on the 410 pro. And a 6.6 Hp on the 310 Pro.
Problem is those are direct drive units and are notorious for snapping the crankshaft. The 310(and new 320) will have a 3/4 crankshaft that can only handle so much shock load. Above 7hp engines step up to 1" crankshaft (up to about 15hp). You just can't do as much with a direct drive. You'll notice the price jumps pretty dramatically once you get into belt drives mainly because they're so many more parts.
The reason that the younger generations throw all their manuals away is because we have this amazing thing called the Internet, where all those manuals exist.
Yes and no. There's a lot of stuff that is either outdated after a few years and or not even possible to find online. A lot of older manuals as well can never be found as they were never uploaded by the manufacturer. There's that honeymoon period of 5-10years where stuff can be found and after that a lot of times there's no reason to maintain the resource.

SAE 30 It's safe to use down to 20°F. The biggest problem with using automotive oils is those are liquid cooled versus an air cooled engine. A car engine sits at maybe 215° F Max. An air-cooled engine will push 275 300°F and break that oil down. These Small engines are also running like a 1950s style engine with all the internals. The oil is the lubricant and the coolant for these air-cooled engines. They have gears that shear the oil and/ splash lubricated. This is all severely damaging to automotive motor oils. They add what is called viscosity improvers that essentially makes the oil stay thick as it warms up. These molecules get sheared and broken down mechanically and through thermal breakdown. You're then left with just the base stock oil. The chipper in this video the oil was a 5 weight max after it's breakdown (probably 5w30 to start). So running this was the same as running an SAE 5 and 100°F outside temperature.
The torque tester channel shows how old loctite really affects torque specs for the worse.
I ruined my Craftsmans mower by running 5-30 syn. After 7 seasons, the engine is shot. I changed the oil, oil filter and air filter before every season.

True. Old manuals came in one language, had fun cartoons of people dieing from misuse, featured a parts breakdown with detailed photos with part numbers and then had a mailing address where you could order parts.

I use the chapstick tube style LockTite. TO funny I do the same thing when removing Oil Drain bolts like those. As fpr oil I always have used Rotella or Delo Diesel oil.
Absolutely with the diesel oil. If I don't have SAE30 sitting around it's 15w40 diesel.
