  • The German model train maker Märklin has run out of money and declared bankruptcy. Michael Pluta has wound up many companies in his time as a liquidator and now he's looking for investors to save as many jobs as possible. Märklin is one of the best known European model train makers. It began trading 150 years ago but thanks to poor management and competition from cheap producers from abroad it has been declared insolvent. Liquidator Michael Pluta hopes he can find a buyer for the company by April 1. Kerstin Schweizer visited Märklin to find out more about the search for a new owner.

Things seem to have turned around well enough, at least as far as we can tell from afar. I"m finally building that model train layout I never had as a child, so I am exactly that demographic: male over the age of 40. But 7 years on from the story, Märklin has new products, advanced its technology, and is coming out with new control systems that tie in computer control even more - so that electronics, automation, programming, industrial processes, and engineering are all involved in a layout, beyond the carpentry and mechanical skills as well.

I just purchased a new Marklin 37990 Big Boy. This is German engineering and workmanship at its best. . Marklin has design, technology and workers that do their jobs. Unfortunately the investment Company didn't rely on that resource. I read comments about a lack of available Black 4-8-4 Northerns and the 4-6-6-4's and Big Boys are always in demand. In 2009 they were making Big Boys I assume they plan a release in 2011 This American Locomotive has world wide appeal. Lets hope this is a good start

Hello! Huston, we got a problem. Minitrix make the famous N-scale,LGB makes the famous G-scale. Trix.LGB,and Maerklin goes under the same company.Maerklin have made many models from USA and some for Canada. Many models have been made for export. If you for example live in Denmark you wont see this model at all.Otherwise you must be Superman.I will do anything to buy me some maerklin stuff.I`d gladely push my car to save some money for a Big Boy ... if i had to! greetings from Norway!

Marklin needs to fix 3 things to be competitive. 1. The AC system needs a sister line in DC. 2. Train sets in foreign liveries need to be created to draw other countries into their orbit. They need to stop making only German trains! 3. They need to stop making only digital trains and offer the products in analog WITH the capability to plug in digital electronics. I am an American but would love to buy Marklin trains aimed at the British, French, Italian, and Russian markets! Especially British!

Marklin should cancel both 1 and z scale, because they already have minitrix from TRIX and O from LGB. Just focus on HO, and make models from all the world, not only europe. I know europe rules on railways but take a look into China, PRR´s from USA or india railways, for example. Only on 2010 they released the french TGV...20 years delay.
