The closest I’ve come to one of these, is one of the Japanese 66 reissues that were out in the 90s. That was an amazing guitar, natural finish with a wonderful neck, I really regret selling that when I did. Yours looks and sounds fantastic even with the idiosyncrasies (I think they add character and story)
I was in the 10th grade when this guitar was made. Many my age wanted a Strat but would never own one. My first guitar cost $11.95 at White Front (1966). It had one pickup. It sounded good but played bad.
Peace Matt!! Thanks for sharing the uncovering of the 66’ Strat..you just never know what you might find inside one.. players did strange things back in the day..The 60’s/70’s.. as a teenager back in the Sixties I remember seeing bunches of Tweed amps(in music stores) no one wanted when the blondes and blackfaces were introduced.. or they would paint the tweed black if they lacked the coin for the new issues... countless Fender guitars were refinished during those times.. no one wanted a scuffed and battered looking guitar.. they wanted new and shiny.. even Lennon painted his original Rick black to sorta match the color of Harrison’s Gretsch’s.. it was something that was just done.. anyway thanks again for the reveal!!
@@MatthewScottmusic sorry it looks like 666 in the video! thanks for the reply and correcting my poor eye sight. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us!
I bought this guitar from the original owner who bought the guitar new in 1966 upon his release from service from the u.s. navy .. his name is etched into the back tremolo block cavity. I can not get an image of it with my camera.... The guitar was originally a sunburst and was refinished in gold years ago. Years later It was dipped in green paint which I was able to easily scrape off to reveal the old gold refinish. There is light sanding around the contours from the gold refinish.. the green refinish came off cleanly with no sanding. When I got the guitar the middle pick up was not original so I purchased an original 66 pickup here and replaced it. The neck and bridge pickup are original... they are all dated and have 5.7 readings... The neck and bridge pickups have shielded lead wires coming off of them. This was done long ago by the original owner.
You should temporarily buy a custom shop stratocaster and compare it to one of your vintage strats! Or, like one of the American Professional series or Vintera series guitars and compare it to one of your vintage strats. Congrats on this collection man, you’ve worked hard for it!
Fender necks from the mid sixties tend to be skinny? One of the reason I moved a ‘66 Telecaster I had several years ago. I wish I had the money to mess around with this guitar! Alas, I do not...hope you find a great home for it.
This is the only guitar that’s come through your channel I’m jealous of haha. It’s got my name written all over it as it stands, I always prefer the bottom tone knob to be removed on strats and this thing sounds awesome.
after seeing this i wonder if, well, i would maybe put the volume pot in the middle hole and the tone pot next to the output jack freeing up the spacefor the right hand to move and not worry too much about accidently rolling off the volume while strumming away in that mindless fashion, as we do.
Man, I love the early CBS Era with just before the bullet is spectacular. And what is it with people in the comments man? They either want something from you, wanna meticulously question you on money or guitars or the oddballs who spite your name or want to fuck you. Man if only they took things at face value, because your hobby is something that is obviously a passion. I love these videos and your sound, you twist turned the blues sound into something your own. I'll stick by saying you're up there with many guitarists, I can't wait to see more of your output as a musician.
Plain enamel grey bottom cbs pickups sounded just as good as the black bottom pre cbs. I watched a video of johan seburgn i think... he played 18 strats from 54 to 74 and it was VERY little variance in sound really. Nothing really significant other than output. Even Eddie kramer said ppl didn't care about cbs or 60s pre cbs back then they sounded pretty much the same.
You should unscrew the jack socket to see if it's green inside too. Maybe the pickguard is not original, or it is, but they lost the unglued same size shield sheet that was usually factory mounted at that time, and glued some aluminium smaller sheet after ? Or it is an older one, or old stock, I saw L series with that shielding too. This neck pickup is a mystery..
Your not kidding about the over sanding. I might be wrong, maybe it’s the camera angle. But it looks like the belly cut has been sanded very thin. Or maybe it’s just how they did it in 66
Not sure if that’s shoreline gold …or firemist gold..nice fretboard worn in …that with bigger frets wud be like custom shop…like the bigger frets on fenders….enjoy your ventures 😊
Hi Matthew, Great video as always. Would you know where could I get vintage fender black and white pvc wires for early 70s guitar bass I’m reconstructing. Or maybe new wires that will look like the old ones? I have found cool 1973 Jazz Bass pickups but the wires are not stock and kinda look like what this guitar has... Thanks
hi matt, you seem to know a lot about fender strats I recently purchased a neck from ebay it appears to be a 66 neck ,but it seems to have a more modern truss rod in it, the end ok the neck whs cut flat like they were putting it on a tele. do you know if any one repoped this style neck with a more modern truss rod, then in a seperate auction i won a 66 neck plate but its in rough shape its got chrome missing with rust but the serial number is still readable it 141604. its cool you can tell it hasa story tho tell
@@MatthewScottmusic I should have guessed, when you read the date from neck. When I was a kid everybody wanted the old small peghead. Now the bigger one is also an artifact of older guitars.
Do any of the 66-69 strats have a smaller neck profile? I like the bigger headstock but cant really play the bigger necks. I remember playing an Eric Johnson strat (big v neck?) at some shop and was embarrassed as I could barely play what I normally play due to my small hands
