- A segmented speedrun of Half-Life 2, utilizing Source Pause Tool, completed in 40:49 by the SourceRuns Team, done in 506 segments on Easy difficulty.
This run was done on an older version of Half-Life 2, more specifically, a build from 2006 that still ran on the original game engine (also known as the Old Engine), before being updated in 2010 to the OrangeBox engine.
Old engine has significant movement differences, as well as a long list tricks and glitches now patched. The most notable are bunnyhopping and prop-flying.
The tricks that allowed us to save the most time were triggerdelaying (also present in Half-Life 1) and our version of save-buffering. Both of these tricks are exclusive to this engine, and were discovered fairly recently (in 2014).
It soon became apparent that using this version would allow us beat the game in a much shorter time than we've ever expected!

My personal headcannon is that the resonance cascade from HL1 just completely changed how physics worked, and that's why Gordon can do this shit.
@@TheMinecraftACMan He could bhop before the cascade in HL1, so not necessarily. My conjecture is that all the physicists from black mesa could bhop, but most of them were killed by the HECU soldiers or the Xen aliens. In HL2 we just never see them do it because Eli is missing a leg and Kleiner is always in his lab lol.

I love how he didn't have any loading screens, old version with the full map instead of sections made it so much easier
this actually does have loading screens, many more than usual due to the high amount of saveloading, however this run is rendered with demos from the game, which do not include loading screens/times

On another video I made a point about how Speedrunners for a specific game should be allowed agree on what is valid for a specific game or speedrun category. It was decently controversial; most of the people disagreeing with me felt cheated (eg. saying having scripts isn't fair play, or the exceptions to rules didn't make sense for the category) and I understand what they mean. I agree on some of those issues to a certain extent.
At this point you might as well explain everything in the video rather than the description, even if the run is playing behind the text. To be fair, there are a lot of new glitches I haven't seen, but people seem more likely to express what they think is fair rather than do a little research and find out what has already been agreed upon.
Personally, I think with the increase of scripted / tool-assisted runs, controversy is going to follow. It may be hard to find a middle-ground, seeing as scripted runs are usually more strategic and entertaining than non-scripted ones, and in some cases there may not be room for a separate "Segmented Run" and "Segmented Run w/ Scripts", but who knows.
