  • In this video I examine and attempt to repair the glow plug relay in my 1979 Mercedes-Benz 240D parts car. I was unsuccessful, but discovered a workaround.

I also bought a w123 parts car, an '80 300TD that had sat for 15 years. Put in new glow plugs, changed filters and got it started. Did a happy dance.

Schematic on cover, yes, as I remember. But, I'm not an electronics guy. I could figure it out if I applied myself, but I'm already parting the car out, and have drained all the fluids already and disconnected everything in preparation for engine removal. Even if I could fix the relay, I can't start the car to test it.. When that's done, I may still examine this part, but I don't currently have time to devote to repairing anything on the '79.

Are you an electronics guy, will you be doing a relay repair / diagnosis video. Maybe the item that gives the relay coil a ground (or power) to activate it is the other component that is the problem. Is there an external timer relay or is that all built into this relay assy. If that large round can is a capacitor or any electrolytic capacitor on the board, they may have dried out internally and are dead. I for one would like to see a video on the troubleshooting of this circuit PLEASE.

Unfortunately, I have almost no understanding of electronics. I was able to look at the relay and pick out the correct contact, but that's about as far as I understand it. I'd certainly like to do a video on this, but I simply haven't the understanding to put together a video that would be informative or helpful.

It sat in a field for 13 years. The outside is deceptive. This car is pretty badly rotted. Shame, too. Don't worry. I'll save what can be saved.

With your reply to my comment, may I as a minimum suggest a look at RUclips for how to test a capacitor video with the cap still in the circuit & again with one leg desoldered which is all that is needed for a real inspection of each electrolytic capacitor along with a simple ohm meter testing in one direction & then again in the other direction. I will assume that a cap is bad at that age & this could be a simple fix but recommend if one cap is bad, replace them all. Schematic on cover, yes?

The clock works great. Much of this car will end up on eBay.

+Ato Nympha I have no direct experience with the W124 series cars, sorry. In the past 20 years, I've only owned W115, W123, and W126 diesels.
