    Once again you have a video that was just what I needed! Literally in the process of painting an old chair with Lamp Black and was wondering about distressing it. I'm debating still because I love the Milk Paint finish without a top coat, so maybe I won't distress it. We'll see :) Thank you!

    Nice. I was thinking about refinishing my old black bedroom set but it has a cheap shiny finish so does that matter when you apply the topcoat?

    Have a question. You mentioned the honey showing thru the distressed area. We have a piece with cherry finish, but want to change to a black distressed look to match other pieces. Can we paint black over? Or need to prime? Or do we have to sand cherry finish off(this not an option)?☺

    I used a wet paper towel on my project and that was not a good idea it left behind lots of fibers. I took a dry paint brush and dusted it off so all was well. Thank you so much for a great tutorial!

    Hi, I was wondering if the water-based top coat would be ok for a bathroom vanity, or would you recommend a different product? The vanity has a granite top so this is only relevant for the front (drawers) but I think it's likely that at some point water will drip down onto the front, so I wasn't sure if that product would be alright. Thanks so much!

    • @RootsWingsHome

      Water based topcoats work just fine for a bathroom cabinet. I've used it in all of my bathrooms over stain or paint and they have all held up just fine! Here's a video specifically about painting bathroom cabinets: ruclips.net/video/TfuqEJrQcXc/видео.html

    • @RootsWingsHome

      Give them a little scuff sanding before you paint them. Check out this video for more details: ruclips.net/video/DWK6V9exRng/видео.html

    This might sound silly but do I NEED a top coat? I'm doing my first project on a coffee table and I don't think I've seen people use top coats yet.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 года назад

      Not silly at all. It kind of depends on the paint. For a coffee table you will probably want a topcoat so it will be more durable and easier to clean. If you paint is shiny though, you may not need it.

    This looks really great! I'm going to be doing some black dining room chairs like this. Since I'll be doing it all in the garage...will the hot, humid Florida weather effect how the top coat dries? I've noticed sometimes when I paint some stuff, it feels "tacky/sticky" after it dries.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 лет назад +2

      Yes, it might. It will certainly take longer to dry. Could you do the topcoat inside? If you use a water based topcoat and set your chairs on a drop cloth doing it inside with less humidity may be a better option!

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  4 года назад +1

      This was "flat" top coat (GF High Performance Top Coat). But to me it always came out with more of a satin finish.

    After distressing a piece do you have to put high performance over it? I saw another demonstration you did where you didn't apply anything.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 лет назад +1

      No, you don't have to. I like to topcoat the darker colors because I think it gives them a more finished look and helps not show dust or finger prints. It also brightens the wood underneath a bit. If it's one of the lighter milk paint colors, I don't usually use a topcoat. Hope that helps!

      @@RootsWingsHome Sorry one more question😁 if i prime, paint then distress the piece do i seal it or still leave it. I'm imagining in my head that when distressing down to the stained part, some of the primer will show as well.

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 лет назад

      Yes, some of the primer will show through. I usually only prime a lighter colored piece (whites) so the primer just looks like the paint. Dixie Belle makes a stain blocking primer that is clear this would be a good option so you could still distress and just get the wood to show instead of layers of color. Check that out: dixiebellepaint.com/boss-new-size/?aff=177

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 лет назад +1

      Sand down the white streaks. Stir it well before use. Could your can of topcoat be old?? I would contact General Finishes directly if you think it could be a product issue. They have good customer service!

      Roots & Wings Furniture LLC Thank you! No I just opened it. But it was the first one I did, so maybe I didn’t apply it correctly. And I shook the can instead of stirring it. Thanks again. They’re turning out beautiful. One more thing. Is one coat sufficient for kitchen cabinets?

    • @RootsWingsHome
      @RootsWingsHome  5 лет назад +1

      @@jovanavasco9647 the issue could be shaking it! Stir instead of shaking next time. Apply with a nice brush, and try not to overwork it. Yes, I think in general one coat is fine for kitchen cabinets!

    • @rolltidefreak1
      @rolltidefreak1 5 лет назад +1

      You probably applied it too thickly...I mix paint for a living and can tell you that ANY water based polyurethane will create white streaks if applied too thick.(doesn't matter the brand)...Use very thin coats. Oh, and NEVER SHAKE! They are like a martini..stir gently, do not shake!
