Love your videos so much! Thank you for all the inspiration, keep ‘em coming! I’m working on a 45 degree custom piece with an electrical fireplace and you helped me nail the paint job!
Perfect timing! I just ead looking up thos method early today. Starteya project and s bit put off by the finishing technique! You seemed to just go gor it! I like that! Thank you!
I want to get this look on a table that currently has painted legs and a chalkboard paint tabletop. Should I just paint the whole table with the primer to start? Or should I strip the table first??
This is exactly what I was looking for.. thank you!! If I want it a bit darker, would I just put on another coat of stain after the first coat has dried??
SFO has a 10 min open time - one of the reasons I loved working with it - it allows you to perfect your finish! Typical water based glazes have a fast open time (2 min or so).
I'm planning to refinish my bath vanity doors, I'm going for a stained look. Is there a brush that you would recommend after the brush staining brush that would soften the lines and give a more stained wood look? Thanks so much..I learn so much from your videos :)
The deck brush is nice but if you want a finer look you could just use a nice synthetic paint brush. You could also use a wood graining tool too - that will really give you a more authentic wood look
Hi! Depending on your climate that can vary - but typically here in california where I live its very dry (no humidity) so it dries by the next day - I have heard some people say it can take a few days to really set up in different temps/humidity levels
So at the very end of the video I do a reveal of the piece and I painted the body black. I don't use any black paint in the PB look. If you are referring to the pieces that are black behind me in my closing segment- that was a different set on my staging area behind me (sometimes I film different segments on different days). 😀
Hi, I am new to this, and I wanted to know what you did to your piece before starting the fusion stain shown here. Did you prime or paint with anything special?
thank you - Its just a look, you don't have to do that added step, its a bit "rougher" than the deck brush and gives a little more variation (removing a bit more of the product)
I’ve been wanting to try this look for a looong time and let me tell you, out of ALL the “Pottery Barn Dupe” tutorials I’ve watched, yours is by far the best one on YT- Suuuper informative, yet simple, to the point and easy to follow. (As all of your videos are). So thank you very much for sharing this with us. xoxx Edit: Question: Have you tried this technique using Lilly Moons Gel Stains? If so, I’m curious to know how it turned out. If not, I’m curious to know how you THINK it would turn out (especially considering LM is water based. Wonder if that would make a big difference).
Wow thank you so much! Of course it was a fun video to do and I loved using these products to do it. Yes you could absolutely - using a light paint color and either old fashioned or mudslide - you can also use water to help the blend and open time do the technique
I didn't mention the primer (sorry)- I used Lilly Moon Eclipse primer. The base color I mention in the video and in the show notes - it is Fusion Mineral Paint in Raw Silk 😀
I love using Fusions SFO in cappucino. It's my favorite color. I haven't seen this technique used before for this look & it's gorgeous. Did you end up using only one coat? Plus, how did it turn out? So curious! Thank you so much for this video!
What did it look like before the primer? Was it veneer? What if it’s solid wood? The look would be the same? I just got a dresser today and I want to mentally prepare myself and have somewhat of a clue before I mess it up 😂. Thank you for reading my message when you have a chance ❤
@@veronicagonzales4781 this was a wood veneer and solid wood mix Piece. It won’t matter if it is veneer or solid - once painted it will come out the same and you are welcome - good luck with your project 😀
I noticed that the Gel Stain & Top Coat do not come in the color you put on what you used. Cappuccino color perhaps is incorrect🙊 what color of gel stain did you really use? Curious? Thx
With regards to the stain and finishing oil, if the furniture is going to be used daily for a make up vanity, will it be better protected with some type of additional sealant and if so, what type would you recommend?
You can but totally not necessary. The finishing oil is the top coat. You can add the natural SFO for more sheen and durability or any topcoat of your choice after the dry time
Hi! I've watched your video trying to brave up to fix a coffee table I keep in the garage lol. I have two questions. 1. Could I use a slightly darker base instead of the raw silk to have a deeper tone under the finsihing oil? My furniture is darker than your end result for this dresser and I want to tie in the tones so it doesn't look so different. 2. How much of the finishing oil did you end up using for this project? Tha ks for such a thorough video!
You can use any base color you like, totally a preference but it will change the overall look - as for how much I used of the SFO - just what you see in the video - so not much - a little goes a long way - I had the 1/2 pint and was more than enough to do the job (I maybe used a 1/4 of the container)and thank you for watching!
Hi! So I tried this technique on a coffe and end tables and used the same oil and even the same brushes and I am so sad the oil doesn't dry. I only did it the top and cannot continue because I keep smearing the paint and it has been 10 days! What did I do wrong? How can I fix this? I'm so discouraged. And I really need to finish this project to furnish my living room. Should I try different paint/method? Thanks for any advise
@@mmelo79 i stained a cabinet once and it never did dry. it was tacky and soft. not sure if the stain was old or not shaken well but it was awful. hope you figured it out
Sometimes the wood cannot be stained straight away (too much damage, maybe a thin veneer that burned through when sanding or not wood - a lot of pieces in the 60's-70's were made with a laminate/formica top. So this give the look of stain when you are not able to and the product dries just the same! :)
I haven’t seen you use those brushes before, neat idea, it looks better than removing the stain with the cloth.
Beautiful… the open time sounds amazing, will definitely try this out soon😊
Thank you!
Love the look and the warm color of the top. Your video was very helpful! Haven’t seen your videos in a while but glad I found this.

How long did it take for the SFO to dry?
Label says 8 hours - I always let it sit overnight before doing anything - different climates (humidity and temps) will play a part as well.
If painted, the SFO will not soak into the wood which it is intended to do .. I wonder why you would want to paint the wood if you are using stain?
