- I said I used Denim at the end of the Video. THE COLOR IS ACTUALLY OCEAN
In this video, I take you through the steps on how to help milk paint get chippy and when I choose to wet distress and when I decide to use wax.

I said I used the Sweet Pickins Milk Paint color Denim at the end of the video but its actually SPMP in OCEAN. Sorry!
Close enough. I am sure both would be amazing.
Actually our oce an here in NC o s gray.
Well, this blue leans gray? Lol.
Jami Ray Vintage I so love this its just beautiful! !! Is the paints u used expensive? ??
Depends. A pint of Sweet Pickins Milk paint is enough to do a project this size. I sell it for $16.00
Hi Jami and Ray!! I just want to let you know that I watch all your videos, I started flipping furniture in August 2019 and made 28,500 PROFIT so far!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!!!
Yay! That’s so awesome!
Wow!! That's impressive..if i were back in the States, I would love to do that. But I live in Italy, out in the countryside with not a lot of sources to find stuff I could refinish..Kudos to you for being so successful.
Love that you showed up in an ad on RUclips. I watch all of your videos. The best!
Well spoken , talented, thorough, and professional! I enjoyed this video
Thanks!
Love it, there’s something so romantic about this technique
I never get tired of viewing this video over and over...love the way it turned out!
Thanks! ❤️❤️
Hi Jami, I love this piece, it is lovely that you are showing furniture painted in a different colours. I find a lot of youtubers doing only white farmhouse furniture, and I really love pops of colour. 💖
We do our fair share of white, but I love colors and especially blended colors.
You are so gracious to share all of your knowledge! Thanks so much guys!
Aww, you’re so sweet! ❤️
Great job on this piece! I just love it when Jack pops in the video!!! He is so cute and makes me smile!!
Espectacularmente bonito!!! ,el producto blanco que le pones para que le de un tono blanco, que es?? Pintura o alguna clase de patina.Gracias
I painted an antique round side table. The very common one with the spindle with 3 legs at the bottom with metal claws, do you know the one I mean? It had never been painted or refinished. It's a family piece. Anyway, I painted it all in a cashew color chalk paint 15 mins ago. 🙁☹ I decided to look for a layering tutorial because I don't like it. THEN I REMEMBERED I HAD (YOUR) MILK PAINT! I'd planned on using it because unknowingly, I used my other bag on raw wood (newly constructed piece)and didn't know it wouldn't chip what happens if I paint over the chalk paint if I super distress and get a lot of the chalk paint off?
I'm glad that you did a video on the different waxes and the different ways to distress the milk paint. I don't like to use my orbital sander on milk paint; just my sanding sponge or sandpaper. I haven't thought about the wet distress but glad to find out about that too. I want to try the white wax too before using the clear. Most of the time I use a liquid sealer and have found out that it does tend to make the milk paint chip more that I really like. I have the perfect piece I'm fixing to start on that will look GREAT this way. Can't wait to get started. Thanks for all of your and Zeb's great videos !!
Thanks Gloria! Happy painting!! ❤️❤️
Beyond gorgeous!! I learned I need to trust the process…
How long does it take for the milk paint to dry .. this is amazing
Just ordered ocean and the white wax so that I can try this on my giant upright piano. Wish me luck!!
It’s gonna be awesome on a piano!
Loved this video! Do you have a cabinet whitewash video? I would like to do my kitchen cabinets.
Your such a sweetie, Jami. So is Zeb! I'm in Alberta, Canada, so where our dollar is sitting right now (which is usually wretched), purchasing and shipping in US $ isn't prudent. However...I try to hit the Like 'button' and painstakingly sit through adverts to help out you out. I just have to remember to share your page! Thx and keep up the ambition and continued learning!
Thank you!
I painted a china hutch white but didn’t put any overcoat on the brown finish I applied polycrylic on top of white then used orbital sander to distress. I just distressed lightly because it took it down to the wood. What should have done differently and what to I need to put on for finishing coat
I know this is an older video, but can you tell me what flowers you decorated with? The pink flowers are exactly what I've been looking for
how about packing tape @6:46 put down on top of second coat of green. chip parade
I’m a little confused. If I don’t want chippy but want a little distressed from my understanding you don’t want to start with a shiny piece and when you add milk paint you add the bonder? But what is the different between the diy and the milk paint? Is it best to use the diy then milk on top so when I wet sand/sand the chalk paint distresses easier?
Really pretty Jami ❤️❤️❤️ And it sold super fast too, woohoo!!!
They backed out of the sale. 🙁 they wanted me to repaint it a different color and I politely declined lol. I’m hoping someone else will snag it quick though! My shop space is full and I don’t have room in the house. 😂
Jami Ray Vintage BOO 👎🏻
Thank you for the presentation. What kind of sealer to use between paint layers?
🦋Once again, you’ve made an ordinary piece into a warm beautiful table. I love it.
How about a coat of white underneath instead of black? Which looks best?
That table is so pretty.
Jamie I noticed you only dipped into the white wax once or did I miss it? Haven’t tried diy wax yet love the paint and sweet Pickens milk paint!
This is absolutely beautiful! You do beautiful work Jamie!
Im making crates and want to do a white wash and stain behind the white and suggestions or what products should be used?
If you have a newer MDF piece, can you just put milk paint right on top (without sanding or priming)? Or should I prime w oil-based Kilz and then do the milk paint after?
Hello! Wondering if you buffed the wax with a dry microfiber rage or a damp one?
It’s always your videos that cover exactly what I need to do! thanks for always being there 😉
❤️❤️
Love your vids and color choices i used the same colors in my bdroom, but i would also love to see some other color options into play like reds or yellows. I am planning an island piece for mom in law and want to change it up a little. Something that will pop a little without being overwhelming majority in the kitchen. Love you guys!
Years ago when I still lived in Vt, I did a standing cupboard. It was already old, but I hated the color..I painted it barn red, then painted a layer of millk paint that I made from scratch in a color I love that I call Depression Green. When it dried I just sanded it by hand so the red came through in places. It was beautiful. If you wanted to, you could start out with a mustard yellow as a first coat, then red, then green-- all old colors. It would look great.
I purchased the sample size of Flour Sack but then decided to use it on a bigger piece so I only had enough paint for s thin first coat. I ordered and received more paint and am ready to finish up this project. My question is: the first thin coat chipped in quite a few places. Do I wipe off all the chipping before I paint the second coat? Note I did put a splash of extra bond in the first coat!
I would take a soft bristle brush or broom and knock off what’s loose, then start painting. Sounds like you’re going to get some lovely chipping!
Great video and beautiful table! I am curious what can be used to clean a piece like this?
Once cured (about 30 days) it can be wiped down with a damp cloth
Excellent job and your step by step explanations really help!
Oh good! Sometimes I can start piling on steps and it can confuse people.
excellent tutorial. specific straight to the point and I never see anyone recap as professionally as you. It creates a checklist in our mind that we can refer back to easily. And because you are careful to do this step often we can easily pull up a video and go right to where it would be. for a quick reference while working on a piece.
Excellent! Very inspiring. Thanks Jami and Zeb and the little guy!
Did you do a video on white wash technique? I would love to see that.
Wow you gave a great idea for my home my wall ate blue drke it called storm so I'm going to do white and creams yellows I hope it's goes good together 🤔
Loved this....it helped will watch all week to learn more before I tackle my much needed projects.it will help in deciding which paint to use too..one more ? After project is done do you dust etc. with pledge or ?
Gorgeous piece!!! How would you seal a piece if you like the look the brushstrokes gives it? Would you still use the white and clear wax and just skip the buffing step?
Yeah, it will eventually dry and harden. If you don’t buff it takes longer to fully cure because it’s thick. Maybe do a light buff after a couple days
Jami Ray Vintage awesome, thank you!!!!
This was perfect timing for me as I"m planning to do a piece the exact same way, just different colors. I did love that color combo though, might have to buy more paint from you. Lol. Thanks for the step by step, I'm confident I can do this.
Yay! Would love to see your project!
Whats with hole on top
This is exactly like I want a table of mine to look, but on the wax sealer. Can I seal it with a satin polyurethane? Will your paints accept that kind of final, protective coat? Thank you, and I look forward to learning more from you!
You can seal it with polyurethane. Just keep in mind that a liquid sealer may reactivate the paint and cause even more chipping.
@@JamiRayVintage Thanks so much. It doesn't sound as if a liquid sealer is the way to go, but this helps me to figure out how to begin my first project.
That's just beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
was the "Grand Rapids"? this furniture was so lovely that it was often ordered and shipped thru out Europe.
Thank you, Jami that was a very informative video. I like to go back and watch these again and take notes (I have a notebook just for the purpose of chalk paint/milk paint/DIY paint) so I can reference techniques as I go. I love the table. Again thanks for sharing all the great techniques and ways to use DIY and milk paint. You mentioned doing a white wash type video I will be interested in that. I don't like using wax (I may try DIY wax it looks less like a thick paste than all that I have tried) so doing a white wash (or even a black wash) interests me.
Thank you! The white wash video will be coming soon.
I would like to see the piece before you painted it black. Is there a video where you show it?
We don’t have a picture but Zeb did some experimenting with a new stripping method with the piece in this video.
ruclips.net/video/iRazHSxWEpA/видео.html
Very pretty!
What is the difference between seal wax protection and polycrylic protection and what is better for acrylic paint seal can I use valspar stain after polycrylic seal pls let me know it’s my first diy
Wax is a great sealer that can be applied with multiple coats and buffed to a matte sheen or buffed more for a higher glossier look. Times when I prefer to use liquid top coat like DIY paints Big Top is on table tops or heavy use items like a nightstand or end table that will have things set on it a lot. (We do 4-5 coats of Big Top on dining tables.)
I would do all of your finish (paint or stain) before sealing the piece. Hope that helps!
jamirayvintage.com/search?q=Top+coat+
Hang on so the top coat was left to cure to form a barrier but the wet cloth alone was enough to take it off and see the original color under the black??
Also how long did you wait for the blue layer to dry before doing the second coat and before doing the white color
And how often do you have to rewax your furniture
Yes, the Big Top can take several days to fully cure and we just wanted to create a little resist so we painted the milk paint on once the Big Top was dry to the touch, but it was far from cured so with a little elbow grease it can still be wiped back.
We gave the milk paint a couple hours to dry and then did the second coat.
Once wax is cured he’d you don’t typically have to wax again. If it’s a high use piece of furniture some people will go back and touch it up every now and then with more wax but I never do and haven’t had an issue.
Jami this is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! I’d LOVE to have this piece but since I can’t I will definitely try to do this to a small dresser I have. Thank you sooo much for this tutorial. You rock! BTW your hair looks beautiful. God bless you and your family.
You’re so sweet! Thank you!
Did you see in another comment that the buyer backed out? It might still be available if you check. 😁 You sounded like you wished you could buy it.
It’s sold again and this buying picked it up already. 😐
frugalmomofmany 😊 Thank you for being so thoughtful to let me know.
hey guys quick question why wax instead of shellac like other projects? On before I forget what about using Rustoleum spray paints on metal instead of a normal paint?
You could use the chalk paints we use on metals. Rustoleum does work pretty well on metal though. We waxed instead of using a liquid top coat because it was really chippy and a liquid top coat can reactivate the paint and cause more chipping.
I loved your project, I have a question, could I use acrylic paint instead milk paint?
It wouldn’t give the same chippy effect and acrylic can’t be wet distressed.
It wouldn’t give the same chippy effect and acrylic can’t be wet distressed once it dries.
interesting the irony in the effort put towards making a piece of furniture look like nobody has made any effort to maintain it.
Do you have a grey colored piece you did?
I Jamie I painted a small table( it's old )black now I want to add either a country blue milk paint or white milk paint then distress it what do you think would be the best country blue shade? Or should I do white? My sofa and recliners are a light gray. And my accent pieces are country blue in my living room. The walls are a off white. Oh and do I need to use two different wax to finish with? I will also need brushes for wax and paint. What ones should I order. I have been using Annie Slone chalk paints now I am so looking forward to trying your Milk paint and Diy Paint. Thank you so very much I just love all your video's.
Very nice job. This gave me the perfect color and paint ideas I have been struggling with relating to a piece of furniture (or two) for our family room. Another beautiful demo and nice departure from your typical white pieces which my house is not well suited to. I have a rustic cottage farmhouse like decor and own many pieces of the darker Eastlake furniture and white white will just not work well. This however is perfecto!!! 👍🏻 TFS
I get that, I love painting with color, But I also don’t put it in my house often unless it’s vintage shades of soft blue-greens. ❤️❤️
When you added clear wax after white waxing, doesn’t that just remove the white? Clear Wax is typically used to erase colored wax
Very beautiful your furniture, congratulations. Kisses from Portugal
Absolutely beautiful! This is the look I want to achieve! Perfect!💗
Thank you Donna! ❤️❤️
I'm a newbie. I bought a vintage coffee table. Color is dark brown. If the dark brown is the color I want to show thru the chipping, do I need to do anything before applying the milk paint? It appears to be stained wood with some sort of glossy sealer. Thanks in advance!
You can leave it as is and paint if the color is right. If it’s really glossy I would scuff up the surface with some sand paper. Not a lot of sanding, 5-10 minutes should do it. That’ll help the paint adhere so it doesn’t all chip off.
Lindo trabajo 😍👍🏻. Que color usaste ? Me encanto 👏🏻👏🏻

Could the barrier coat between the DIY paint and the milk paint be a wax or does it have to be poly acrylic type? Thanks
As a rule, wax last. You’ll get a good resist but possibly a lot more than you want.
Is it possible to find a table cut it to that size and make two? Love this table good job!
Zeb has cut round tables in half that were missing legs and then we’ve found other legs from tables that had bad tops and married them together.
Jami Ray Vintage , Kool thanks honey
Wow beautiful piece!
Thanks!
Is extra bond needed with all milk paint brands? Is it only if using milk paint with chalk paint or even with two different milk paints?
Not sure about other brands. This is formalized for Sweet Pickins Milk Paint.
Could I use lacquer matte finish as a barrier before applying milk paint .
Yes. The shinier though the better. Paint it when the lacquer isn’t quite dry. When it’s still a little tacky.
Ya la ordene y aun no me han tomado el pago ☺️. Ustedes lo venden ??
I loved this piece super chippy.
Great tutorial 🎉
Great job
Amazing tecnical!
You guys do beautiful work
Thank you!
Fantastic. I would like to try but in Canada is hard to find milky paint. What do you mean by wet distressing? Do you use just wet cloth?
Yes, a damp cloth to wipe back the paint. We ship to Canada if you’re interested.

Looks great. Thanks for sharing.
Girl, you really are the “Bomb Dot Com”, that is BEAUTIFUL. I LOVE 💕 it.
Thank you! 😊
Hi Jaime just ran into your video and it looks amazing. Will have to try. Not sure if you know how to but I just pained my chair but feels a little stiff do you have any solutions for that? Thank you again for sharing...
You painted the fabric? If it feels stiff you can always take a sanding sponge and try to soften it with that
Thank you for your response and I will definitely give it a world. I appreciated it and keep up the beautiful creations they are amazing...
LOVE this! I have a cheap side table from goodwill that I'm going to try this with, with white paint on top. Can't wait!
Awesome! Send pics! ❤️
This turned out beautiful thank you 😊
Wow really nice jamie.
Thank you!
So you do a clear wax and do you seal it with something else?
Wax last
That came out great ❤️❤️💖❤️
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing! 😊
May i ask what kind liquid you putting to prevent chipping
Extra bond. It goes in the milk paint. jamirayvintage.com/products/extra-bond-sweet-pickens
This piece came out beautiful Jami!!
Thanks!
I have a electric fireplace I bought new about 6 months ago. Will I be able to distress it
Are you going to paint it or are you talking about distressing the original color?
I need to know what's the best painters tape. I had always gotten the BLUE brand, all these yrs. When I used it and it mattered, it failed me.
I like frog tape but I avoid using tape at all if I can help it.
BEAUTIFUL. Love the different pieces you've done.
Gorgeous piece!!! I'm new to this and I was wondering what was the splash of, "extra bond", you put into the red cup mixture?
Extra bond is an additive for milk paint to help it not crackle. I put just a little in because I wanted some crackle and chipping. If you put the recommended amount of extra bond in it doesn’t chip much if at all.
Oh my gosh, this is so beautiful! Thanks so much for the video!
❤️❤️ Welcome!
I have one of those desk armoires. Typical particle board with a wood look to it. Is there a way to paint that? We’re changing our color scheme to cooler colors now, and wanted to transform some of the furniture we have so we don’t need to replace. Not sure how paint it would adhere to this piece. Love the armoire, but don’t like the dark mission brown color. Trying to take it to more of an antique white with maybe some darker pale blue mixed in somehow.
Yes you can. Here is a video on how we do it. 👍
ruclips.net/video/WP85J68rNnk/видео.html
Jami Ray Vintage Thank you!!! 😊
It's beautiful
That is one of the most beautiful pieces I have seen you paint! I love everything you do, it this one is extra beautiful! Thanks for all the tips and step by step explanations too. I have many projects waiting for warm weather...if it ever gets here to Ohio. More snow this morning...ugh! I might have to start moving furniture inside to paint soon.
Thanks! Our mountains got a little dusting on the tops a couple days ago but we’ve been in the 50’s in the valley here. Zeb sprayed a hutch in the driveway yesterday! ❤️❤️
How to use powder glaze ..this is a video I would love to see. And was that a dry rag at the end or damp??? You didn't state. Thanks
Damp rag.
How can we get the cool brush you use
It’s this brush here, but we have lots of brushes we love for different things.

Omg I am so glad I found you. I just started to sand 12 year old furniture. I want it to have black undertones with white crackle on top so any tips or info I would be so grateful. This is how we quarantine lol I am new to all of this ❤️❤️❤️
Awesome work. I’ve been watching all your great videos. So inspiring 😀
Simply beautiful! ❤️❤️❤️
Great video like usual, very informative!!! How do you stop dust from sticking to your wax? Xx
Are you talking about while I’m applying it or after it’s applied?
Jami Ray Vintage while applying the wax. Sorry just saw you had responded xx
So, we usually wipe the piece down so that it doesn’t have sanding dust before we seal.
Jami Ray Vintage I do the same thing. I also use a tack cloth and I still get bits of dust in my wax 😑 I even spoon wax from the container on a seperate paper plate and wax it on with a wax brush and I still get dust in my wax while waxing... I just usually pick out the dust as I go but I thought there maybe something obvious that I am doing wrong haha! Thanks Jami x
So the base coat is DIY. Is that chalk paint or what kind. I don't understand how to make it chip.
DIY paint is clay based. I like using it for a base coat because it has amazing coverage and very vibrant colors. It chipped because that’s what milk paint does on its own.
Whats different s between milk paint and calk paint
This video should clear that up, if you have more questions let me know. 😊
