Wow! i have my machine in a million pieces after watching all of the beefy mechanics go in and change the timing belt. And then comes along a sweet young lady who saved everyone 12 hours :)
You just saved my life!! I was hemming my daughter's prom dress and prom is tonight!! My machine suddenly stopped picking up the bobbin thread and I was in a panic. Thank you so so so much for sharing your wisdom!!
Very good information here...the manual never tells how to fix a problem, and, like any other machine, there is no reason why we can't fix a sewing machine. I am an IT person, I fix computers. When my sewing machine did not catch the bobbin thread, I try every way to figure out why and helplessly ended up empty hands. Thanks to your video, though you did not use proper terminology, and sometimes the filming was blurry, but the information given here was clear and valuable enough to give you a thumb up; and you are a genius to figure out this by yourself. BTW, my machine has an automatic needle threader, and it has two adjustment screws on the shank. The upper one is for the threader adjustment, the lower one is for this purpose.
FINALLY!!! THANK-YOU!!! at last, a video that actually addresses the serious problem straight to the point and not second guessing about lint build up and dust or thread weight being mismatched, if you really worked out this problem for yourself, I totally applaud you, the amount of time wasting video's telling you to maybe re-thread the bobbin!, maybe oil the machine!, maybe wear "yellow" socks when sewing, maybe try sitting on mint leaves with a clothes pin on your nose, etc etc, thank you, ..if RUclips only had straight to the point video's like this, then our lives would be better and not wasted hitting soo many dead ends, this video has just saved me loads of time! 😂👍 Sista!! You helped me fix my (used to be my mum's)"Brother"
Here to add to all the thanks! Almost 11 years later and this is the most helpful video I think I have ever seen. Good on you for figuring this out and helping so many more after you!
This was so helpful - thank you! I had actually stopped sewing because I would get so frustrated with my machine constantly jamming (and was too cheap/lazy to bring it in for repairs) Just hemmed my first pair of pants in forever! Thank you!!
Yes!! I am another person cheering for this video! I have been trying to catch my bobin thread for two days and could not understand what went wrong. I will try this now. So grateful to you for posting this info. I too did not pay much for my machine and did not want to take it to the shop which might end up costing more than I paid. Wishing you all the very best
You have no idea how appreciative I am of you right now! You just saved me $60!!! My machine is an old Kenmore and has never worked right, since my grandma gave it to me. I wanted it to make tactical / military gear. I just tested the machine on 3 layers of Cordura nylon webbing and it penetrated it like a hot knife through butter! Thank you sooo much! I'm off to making some sick tactical kit!!
I can't begin to explain how this has helped me! I have an antique treadle sewing machine with the same issue. I watched your video hoping it would be of help. Your video was EXACTLY what I needed! My treadle machine is now sewing like a champ! Thank you so much!
Me too. Got a load of half-made masks. Really hope this is the solution because I’ve tried everything (including replacing a spring) on my beautiful vintage Singer.
@@ElizabethHopkinson We had this problem, found this video, but it was not the solution. The timing can be thrown off by another allen screw that is under the machine on the right side. I am thinking I should make a video to show it. If the timing is off, one of the two allens have loosened and let the shaft slip. Compensating with this screw if the other is loose will eventually lead to the problem happening again.
You are MY HERO!!! I have been trying to fix this damn machine for years, every couple of years I get it out of storage hoping it had repaired itself magically while in the box in the loft lol and surprisingly it never had! Took awhile to get the right wording and find the right video but I found yours and like magic voila the whole issue is resolved in under ten minutes! You bloody genius THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Thank you 💘. I joined a sewing class a few months ago and have had lots of problems getting the machines to run right. Your videos really helped. At the risk of being patronising I think you were very bold to tackle the problem yourself, because you are clearly not a technical type person. Brilliant ,!
Thank you for this video. Adjusting the needle height was all that my sewing machine needed to keep doing a great job; your explanation was great! Thanks.
Thank you so much. I couldn’t understand why suddenly my bobbin thread wasn’t being picked up. For2 days I struggled rethreading the bobbin and needle. Fiddling around with no success. Your video and explanation were very helpful. I watched twice, then my husband and I watched it together. Between us and with your clear guidance- my machine is working again!! Thank you. This was so very helpful. And saved a repair bill!
Ok - I have a 1941 Singer 15-91. I was having the exact same issue. Although my machine is set up completely different than yours, the fix worked like a charm!!! I adjusted the bobbin housing and needle depth & Bam Shazam!!! Back in Action!!! Thank you so much for posting this video!!!!
OMG. I have a Janome and your instructions were clear and concise and machine now works perfectly! This is 2024 and I thank God for this post...Bless you❤
Thank you very very much for taking the time to show this hook timing repair. You have saved me and saved Halloween! Where I live, it would have cost more than I paid for the machine to get it fixed and it would take more than a week.
You were so worried about not using proper terms, but you are using words that I most certainly understand. This is the only video I’ve been able to find that helps fix my sewing machine. repair center wants a base fee of $100.😮
Brilliant! I tested this by just moving the needle first. It worked immediately, so then I went further. Mine is an ELNA, but the guts look almost identical. Thank you SO much, wonderful lady!
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. I was ready to throw my machine across the room I was so frustrated. I really appreciate your sharing this video.
thank you so much for taking the time to demonstrate how to adjust the timing of the bobbin and needle to work in unison so the stitching is correct. My bobbin is so out of time that the needle can't pick it up. I did maintenance on my machine and took the bobbin casing out to remove old stuck piece of thread. It sewed correctly once but I'm sure whenI put the machine away the casing moved slightly causing the timing to be off. So with your much needed help and very succinct instruvtion along with the zoomed photo demo I am certain I can do the necessary minor adjustments to create the 'just right' synchronicity between needle and bobbin. I am 65 and can't afford to take my machine in so you have also saved me a significant amount of money!! With the various videos that so many kind people have posted I have been able to save hundreds of dollars by fixing my windows, oven, refrigerator, lawn tractor, toilet, small appliances and so many other things I don't recall all of them! Given the economic state of our country it is wise to fix everything we can without having to pay for repairs until such time wages are increased to provide the opportunity to create descretionary money for these things. I'm sure upper class Americans who are in control of the pharmaceutical and insurance companies don't even have the need for a sewing machine much less own one!! Thanks for helping middle class America survive while these adverese self centered politicians get their act together to put a stop to the top 10 percent having 80 percent of the wealth in our country and only get their hands slapped when found guilty of defrauding the bulk of Americaqn people!! Sorry to include the rant but hope it serves to underscore just how much you are helping others!
Thank you! I have had so many problems with a machine that was given to me and I think your video has resolved it. I kept bending needles because it was hitting something metal and I thought it was just something bent. I even took the machine apart but never knew about the bobbin timing until your video. I was literally just off to buy another sewing machine. Fingers crossed I can now finish my dress for Friday. Best wishes from London :)
Thank you SO much! I am using a 25 year old machine and I’m not someone who really sews. None of the professional videos I watched helped and I thought it was going to cost me to fix. And then I found your video! Perfectly fixed my problem!
😢I'm experiencing this now my machine needle isn't getting the thread from the bobbin and in the tutorial she opened her machine but I don't think there is a way to open mine, how did you fix yours?? Did you have to open your machine?
Thank you so much for this. There was nothing in the manual but must be a common problem. So proud of myself for fixing it but couldn’t have done it without you. Xxx
You are a gem! I love finding smart people on RUclips. I admire your spirit to just keep trying until you figured it out, and thank you so much for sharing your hard earned knowledge. I have an older Necchi 3537 - entirely different machine but the bobbin case and shuttle assembly looks exactly the same. I've just had it all taken apart to clean and oil it (shoutout to "Vintage Sewing Machine Garage" for instructions on that), but when I put it back together the lower thread wasn't catching. Now I know how to fix it. Thanks. edit: btw the tool is called an allen wrench.
You're a god damn lifesaver! My sewing machine started doing this today, a week before my final project for uni that's worth 100% of my grade for one of my modules. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us how to fix it! A million thank yous isn't enough! 😄
Thanks so much for this video! It's been months that I'm trying to find what 's wrong with my machine. The thread kept jamming and I tried everything I have found so far. Luckily I ended up here and this was the solution. I'm really grateful!
OMG!! I was having the same problem with my singer sewing machine. your video helped me a lot. I have a complete different machine than yours but I fixed it!! THANK YOU!!!!!!
I have searched and searched to try to find out what was wrong with mine because it wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread now that I know how to fix it thanks to you I can't get the part off of the top to fix it I'm afraid to pull out a too hard cuz I'm afraid I'll break it so how do you get it off? my machine is not the same model as yours but it looks like it do you lift up on it or do you pull it to the side or how do you open it please thank you
Thankyou!!! I just purchased a vintage machine today, everything was working except it wouldn't pick up the bobbin thread! You just made my mother's day!! THANKYOU for sharing your knowledge!! X
Just wanted to say thanks. My mother in law has a singer confidence machine, and your video helped me fix it. Took about 10 minutes to repair lol, Thanks again for sharing.
OMG!!!! this is great information. I have a Singer Simple 3116 and since day one it has never worked and I always thought it was me not knowing how to use it. I was getting very frustrated because it was getting stuck all the time and a whole bunch of thread was left underneath. After watching this video and followed the instructions it works like a charm. Thank you so much for posting this.
Omg!! Thank you so much for sharing this video, my machine has not been picking up the bottom thread for so long and I couldn't figure it out at all, and right now I'm in the middle of a load of costumes and it was driving me mad that I couldn't fit it. Your video a twist of a screw and perfectly stitching. So again thank you it really saved my sanity, lol.
I've had my Brother LS for yeeears, probably going on 10, and just about a month ago, the timing went. And yes, to take it the repair shop would have taken two weeks and about $80. So thank you for being brave enough to take apart your machine so that others can save time and money. I like to do things myself too and your video certainly got me going in the right direction! Thank you!!
Thank you for your help. I could not find a Brother sewing machine like mine for help to fix the bobbin timing. With the help of your video, I was able to fix it and sew. Thanks so much!!
Thank you for your video! I fixed my sewing machine!!! You showed me what the timing should look like. Thank you for helping me to learn more about my sewing machine.
ALRIGHT!! I was able to fix my bobbing timing by viewing your video. I even had the same problem with it skipping a stitch. It saved me $110, I called the local sewing shop and that is what the lady quoted. That price also motivated me to try and fix it on my own. Only took a couple of minutes once I realized how to do it. Don't see how the sewing repair person could feel comfortable charging such an outrageous fee for something that easy.
I was on the verges of tears from frustration, this video saved me from having a manic episode lmao I was going mad trying to pull that tread up and even tried just weaving it in myself omgomgomg it took me a while to find a the small wrench but omg I’m so happy right now I haven’t used this in months and when I went to move the needle back into place I could even see where the old grease marks were from where it was supposed to be. And I had the exact same machine wow ty so much I wish you nothing but joy and happiness 🙌
Thank you! Something slipped and my hook timing ended up wrong and I thought I'd fixed it but it still wasn't picking up the bobbin. This video helped me understand it better and I solved it. Rather than adjust the needle I actually loosened the bobbin housing and lined it up that way - I've got a Toyota 5500 and this was easier as I can't easily reach the needle screw.
Thank you so much I was sitting here crying because I forgot to unplug my sewing machine and my youngest I think step on the step a million times. Anyway, I thought it was a lost I’m making masks, sewing machine are sold out. YOU SAVED MY DAY WEEK MONTH!!
Your video helped me understand my sewing machine better! A few years ago I thought there was something wrong or faulty about my machine and I stopped using it, until now... Now I see what the problem is and fixed it! For those who didn't get it, try playing with the hook and the needle and see how the whole mechanism work. Leave the top thread intact but remove the bobbin. Basically, you want the hook to catch top thread as the needle goes up, thus forming a loop. For me, changing the direction of the needle eye helped! Thanks again!
You are the best sweetheart u just made my day Thanks a ton, I was clueless why my machine is not picking up the thread from bobin I was about take it for repair u saved my time and money too. Thanks again very well explained
THANK YOU! I've been trying to repair my machine for over a month and this was the last step to fixing it! It's almost impossible to find decent videos on repairing machines (SO much gatekeeping); I even read the entire manual! But this was so helpful and to the point. THANKS.
Thank you! I think it's actually easier to understand than something made by a professional b/c you don't use a whole bunch of technical terms, "hook thingy" is fine with me! The fact that your stitch sample looks like mine is also confidence-inspiring :) in the best way, people who can make couture garments at home scare me slightly.
i have the exact same machine and was experiencing this ! i’m so thankful you video popped up !! i took home economics in grade 8 and that is the extent of my sewing knowledge LOL ( shoutout to Mrs Shandell lol ) and I am trying to attached 3 panels of curtains ( obviously i’m going to practice. but i found this in my house and you just saved me so much money and cursing 😂🤦🏻♀️ THANK YOU !!!!
Thank you so much, I am new to sewing and I bought a used machine, only to run into this timing issue. I would have never figured it out without this video, thanks a million!!!!!
That screw thing with the L wrench is called an Allen Head "set" screw. It sets the needle positioning rod to the proper adjustment length. The L wrenches are called Allen Wrenches, not to be confused with the star shaped "torx" style screw head. Any good home hardware store will sell a kit with a driver handle and multiple size bits of the various types. Some even have a flexible extension so that you can get to screws in weird angles. Magnetic bits are nice too. I've found the kit useful for my sailrite machine
Here’s what I like so much about this… You quickly make a strong case for your needle height to be adjusted or should I say readjusted and I completely agree with you. You never even consider mentioning the shuttle race and adjusting it either a little clockwise or a little counterclockwise. Needle first! Thank you for saving me time and money.
Thank you so much! I was watching a different video that had me messing with the bottom of the machine. This worked!! such a relief because I'm borrowing this machine!
although my machine wasn't actually having a hook timing issue, this video was able to show me that my needle wasn't getting far enough into the shuttle race (bobbin holder), and it made me realize that my needle was too high into the clamp that holds it. my machine is over 50 years old so the instruction manual that i was able to download off the internet is lacking to say the least. often i have to rely on youtube videos such as this just to teach me little things about how my machine works. thank you!
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU!! Seriously, I don't even know how I came across this video, after watching 30+ more videos trying to figure out what's wrong with my machine. This video was my saving grace.
Thank you very very very much for info. and explanations. You are a smart and talented lady .we need more ladies like you in this world. Keep it up .You are the BEST.
You are a genius. This is the first time I opened my wife's sewing machine to fix exactly the same problem. I am glad that I saw your video, saved precious money and a trip to technician.
Thank You from far Poland Eastern Europe. I had the same problem the bobbin was blocked by dirt. When I cleaned it and readjusted it starded to saw correctly, but it still misses stiches on more complex settings. I have to work on it again.
Thank you! Much appreciated. Just one straight to the point video on your RUclips account and you have 2,8 mln views! So there you go: you saved the day for a LOT of people! Great job. :-D And thanks again.
Can't express my gratitude for your video little lady. Before watching this video about the timing, my machine was kicking my butt. Like Mike Tyson vs. Miley Cyrus kinda bad. Thank you so much for your clarity and patience.
I am delighted to have found this as my frustration level was getting rather high! I was afraid I would have to take the machine in and right now is not a good time to do that so I am anxious to get back to my sewing studio and work on it in the morning when I am rested. I have several machines and don't know why little things like this happen so easily. I know that keeping them clean is very important and I try to do that. But this timing thing is nuts!
Hi, I just wanted to thank you for your detailed info. You’ve really helped me a great deal to fix my singer timing issues and I don’t even have a brother machine. Thanks a million!
This usually happens when you run over a zipper tooth or something to actually push the needle up into the machine...then you just drop the needle bar down so the hook will catch the thread. Good for your Girl !!
This is SO helpful - thank you! My needle just broke and then, with the new needle it wouldn't catch the bobbin thread. Now I know how to sort it out - very, very grateful to you!
+spettro9 Also sometimes referred to as a bicycle wrench. Good stuff here. I think that the sizes are metric. a helpful tip is multi headed screw driver kits have them in various standard sizes... for cheap! be well.
I just watched your 3 videos on how to do the bobbin and thread your sewing machine because i was having issues getting my bobbin thread to come through the bottom- thank you so much! I figured out what I was doing wrong thanks to your videos 💕💕💕
Giant old Singer here: Opening the top, I could not for the life of me twist the screws to raise or lower the needle, but opening up the bottom part enough to loosen the screws on the the machine’s bobbin mechanism, I was able to adjust the bobbin hook positioning there to time with the needle! Hook timing is the key! Thank you!
9 years after posting and this just helped me get my ancient singer machine to work. Thank you!
Omg 10 years later. Here I am the night before homecoming and my singer started messing up. This works. it fixed it immediately. You are a god sent

I want to add my thanks to you..May God continue to bless your hands and your heart.
8 years and you've saved my hobbuly project. Amazing thank you
OMG!!!! this is great information.
Same here! Soooo tired of fighting in..going to try this
Oh my,. I just noticed I'm on my grandson's name. I'm Sharon Paxton in Arkansas.
My mother had the same problem and just saved a huge repair bill in less than 2 minutes. Great video thanks!
That was exactly my situation the quote I got was crazy and I consider myself to he handy so I gave it a shot. Good to hear you saved $110!!
ejc1210 So unfair to overprice repairs. Easy money but I bet their business is SLOW.
Thanks so much! I been trying to figure out why my sewing machine wasn't threading for months! You've solved the problem! :)
CANNOT say thank you enough!!!!!! My machine had a different problem but going through these steps led me there.
Awesome video! I knew I had a hook timing issue, but had no idea how to fix it. You explained everything perfectly! Thank you!
Thank you so much I was sitting here crying because I forgot to unplug my sewing machine and my youngest I think step on the step a million times. Anyway, I thought it was a lost I’m making masks, sewing machine are sold out. YOU SAVED MY DAY WEEK MONTH!!
Why my machine stop after 3 stitches
THANKS.
God bless you!!! I was so frustrated with my machine and the company’s wouldn’t email me back with a solution!
11 years after posted and LORDDDD. From the bottom of my heart THANKS seriously
Thank you! I think it's actually easier to understand than something made by a professional b/c you don't use a whole bunch of technical terms, "hook thingy" is fine with me! The fact that your stitch sample looks like mine is also confidence-inspiring :) in the best way, people who can make couture garments at home scare me slightly.
Thank you so much!! I actually messaged the guy who sold me this to fix it and then just thought to watch a video. Definitely saved me some $$.
I am very impressed with your analytical abilities.
Fantastic!! Great explaination! Ty so much!!!!
Your video from 10 years ago really helped me fix machine. Thanks so much.
First good video I've seen on timing adjustment. Thank you!!
i have the exact same machine and was experiencing this ! i’m so thankful you video popped up !! i took home economics in grade 8 and that is the extent of my sewing knowledge LOL ( shoutout to Mrs Shandell lol ) and I am trying to attached 3 panels of curtains ( obviously i’m going to practice. but i found this in my house and you just saved me so much money and cursing 😂🤦🏻♀️ THANK YOU !!!!
You have no idea how much you've just helped me. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your welcome, so glad it helped you.
Thank you so much, I am new to sewing and I bought a used machine, only to run into this timing issue. I would have never figured it out without this video, thanks a million!!!!!
Thank you for this! I was able to fix the timing on my brother machine! I love that you figured this out on your own!
Thank you! You just saved me either £40 on a sewing machine service or £xxx on a new machine. Much appreciated!
I've found the kit useful for my sailrite machine
which one do we need ?
Here’s what I like so much about this… You quickly make a strong case for your needle height to be adjusted or should I say readjusted and I completely agree with you. You never even consider mentioning the shuttle race and adjusting it either a little clockwise or a little counterclockwise. Needle first! Thank you for saving me time and money.
Thank you so much! I was watching a different video that had me messing with the bottom of the machine. This worked!! such a relief because I'm borrowing this machine!
I had no idea I had to worry about a timing issue! Your video helped me fix my Viking. Thank you so much for posting this video.
although my machine wasn't actually having a hook timing issue, this video was able to show me that my needle wasn't getting far enough into the shuttle race (bobbin holder), and it made me realize that my needle was too high into the clamp that holds it. my machine is over 50 years old so the instruction manual that i was able to download off the internet is lacking to say the least. often i have to rely on youtube videos such as this just to teach me little things about how my machine works. thank you!
thank you young lady, now I can fix my wife's sewing machine and I can look like the hero....lol
“Young Lady” is so cringe
OMG thanks! I literally fixed mine in two minutes. I was so worried about how much it was going to cost me to take it in somewhere. THANK YOU
Thank you so much! I was able to fix my mum’s machine which made her very happy! Thank you again.
Thank you so much…my machine went kerbluely in the finishing straight of an urgent project…you saved the day with this video!!
FIXED IT!! Great video and I can appreciate your lay woman's terms!
THIS WAS SO HELPFUL!!! THANK YOU!! Seriously, I don't even know how I came across this video, after watching 30+ more videos trying to figure out what's wrong with my machine. This video was my saving grace.
the thing you are pointing that moves up and down is called the needle bar.
Thank you so much last time I paid someone to fix but after finding your video I fixed my machine in minutes
Thank you and bless you sweet lady! You saved both my cash and sanity!
Patrick Richardson is
Can't express my gratitude for your video little lady. Before watching this video about the timing, my machine was kicking my butt. Like Mike Tyson vs. Miley Cyrus kinda bad.
Thank you so much for your clarity and patience.
That's great your welcome!! Glad we didn't have to go out buy new machines.
Thank you as well. Just bought a used machine and couldn’t figure why it wasn’t holding a stitch. Your video saved me a lot of time and frustration.
Seriously great walk through! thank you so much.
You saved me $70! I have a Singer, but went through you steps and fixed my machine! Thanks so much!
I was about to buy a new one..I can't believe I even a helpful video.
Makes sense. I was being forceful with my machine when this happened. I guess i need to be nice.
This is SO helpful - thank you! My needle just broke and then, with the new needle it wouldn't catch the bobbin thread. Now I know how to sort it out - very, very grateful to you!
Glad it helped!
"L shaped wrench" = Hex wrench AKA Allen wrench AKA Allen key AKA hex key
helpful video, thank you!
Thanks I just couldn't think of the name when I spontaneously made the video. Lol

I figured out what I was doing wrong thanks to your videos 💕💕💕
omg thank you so much!! 😭😭 It must be an issue with this model cause I have the exact same one
Thank you!
