Wellesley welcomed award-winning journalist and best-selling author Jane Mayer to campus to deliver this year’s Wilson Lecture. This annual event brings internationally prominent speakers to campus to explore the issues of the day. Mayer spoke on the topic “Fake News and Alternative Facts: The War on Truth.”
Mayer was the Wall Street Journal’s first woman White House correspondent, is a best-selling author, and currently serves as the chief Washington correspondent for the New Yorker, where she writes about politics, law, national security, and culture. At the Wall Street Journal, she covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, the last days of the Soviet Union, and the first war in the Persian Gulf. Known for holding powerful public officials accountable, Mayer is the author of the 2016 New York Times best-seller Dark Money: The Hidden History of the Billionaires Behind the Rise of the Radical Right, which the Times named one of the 10 best books of the year. She also wrote the 2008 Times best-seller The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals, which was named one of the top 10 works of journalism of the decade by NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute and one of the 10 best books of the year by the Times.

Wow! I get to fact check Jane Mayer! Groucho did say "Who are you gonna believe, me or your own eyes?", but he was quoting Chico, who asked it of his wife when she caught him kissing another woman.

As for Kavanaugh, I pretty much believed his victims. However, I had to reject their claims for 3 reasons, as follows: 1) These incidents occurred like 30 years ago, when he was a teen and since then, he has completely reformed and has had an exemplary track record of helping women; 2) If these victims wanted justice, they shld have sought it before. Why now? Were they doing it only for political purposes to prevent his nomination (despite the fact that he has long since reformed and not the same person he was 30 years ago); and 3) It was wholely inappropriate and inherently unfair to suddenly raise criminal charges against someone during a confirmation hearing, and then proceed to turn it into a mock trial. Some alternative actions could have been to press criminal charges, stage a protest or stage a press conference.

As a twig is bent, so will it become a tree. Kavanaugh did nothing whatever to show change.
Thirty years ago, raped women and girls and children were guilty no matter the circumstances. Women and girls, even small children knew that, why don't you understand that simple reality?

Lady you started out saying you believe his victims then went on to explain why you did not believe them. Your statements are contradictory.

@@keitharmstrong1203 never said I didn't believe them. I said their claims are no longer relevant to this nomination bcuz it was 30 years ago and he has long since reformed.

It appears that Jane and other MSM reporters in general have become resentful over the internet providing a powerful platform to average citizens, which has made MSM far less relevant than before. True, we now have numerous "news" outlets who do not necessarily tell the truth. I wonder if this is why MSM has justified not telling the truth? I remember a time when news reporters were required to be non-partisan and people could count on them to provide the full, unvarnished story.

Suzanne Reaver So.. when you’ve self revealed as a shill for “hyperbolic truth” you resort to attacking the messenger.? You obviously have much distain for Jane Mayer’s skill, integrity and strong moral compass. Perhaps a stint as White House Press Secretary and keeper of the hyperbolic truth would bode more suitable for you.? 😬🤥 🗡⚖️🗽✨🇺🇸✨

@@curtisgandy1572No, I am not a shill for "hyperbolic truth" and personally, I have respect for Jane Mayer. However, in this lecture, she is nit picking on negative details (the "facts") without providing full context or opposing views, including how and why so many people voted for Trump, why does his base continue to steadily increase... and what campaign promises has he lived up to or made progress on? Just asking for a balanced perspective.
