- Hank Gathers died in a game against Erik Spoelstra and the university of Portland after an alley hoop dunk. It was the second time he collapsed on the court, but this time unlike the last when he got up and walked it off, he never got back up and was pronounced dead later in the day. Had he still been alive, I think he would've been a #1 pick and likely Hall Of Famer. Sad to see this talented player lose his life so sudden and not see his full potential. R.I.P Eric Wilson "Hank" Gathers Jr. Stunted Growth.

I remember when I was a kid I saw the movie about him called Final Shot and that was my first time hearing about him. Once I got to HS I did some research on him because in one of the NBA 2K games they had the court that was named after him in the game. Son was a hell of a ball player. Fast forward I watched his 30 for 30 last year and saw the actual footage of him collapsing. Definitely a very sad moment. R.I.P Hank Gathers
Yeah I saw that same movie as a kid as well and was my first time hearing of him. I remember at the time I thought it was a fictional movie. It wasn't until years later that I found out it was a real person. RIP to Hank, hell of a baller.
@@hennylo68 Yea It was a good movie too
Hell yeah bro that was one of the original 2ks. 2k2. I used to play it all the time. You do pick-up games at the Hank gathers rec center. I thought back then it was something made up for the game then I got older and saw all the footage and 30 for 30 on him. Led the country in scoring and rebounding in the same year. That's cold
@@bbryant9455 Word and that was when it was for Dreamcast I believe
@@brooklynsennyhardaway2430 you already know fam. The good old days of gaming. Especially for 2k. No vc bullshit.
I was wearing Hank's LMU #44 jersey the day Kobe died. Two Philly legends that were taken away from us way too soon. God bless both their souls. 🙏🏼
Hank Gathers:man oh man had that fire in AAU High School And College...had he lived he would be a top pick in the NBA Draft...I recall watching a 30 for 30 documentary on the Loyola Marymount march madness run and it was a good but sad documentary...rip Hank Gathers (1967-1990)....rip
R.i.p Hank he was really the next Charles Barkley led ncaa in points and in rebounds and was quick for his size up and down the court
Correct... except in tip top shape
Was better than Barkley... A REAL PHILLY SPORTS LEGEND
RASHEED WALLACE IS THE ONLY PHILLY BALLER TO COME CLOSE
One of my favorite players of all time I use to love watching Loyola Marymount play that system was tough
He literally gave his life to the game
I remembered that night like it were yesterday one of my favorite player of all time, RIP Hank!!!!
If he'd left after his junior year, he would have been in the 1989 draft. And as I'm sure you know that aside from Tim Hardaway, The Reign Man, Glen Rice, Vlade Divac Sean Elliot and Uncle Cliffy(RIP) it was one of the worst drafts of all time. He'd easily would have went 1 or 2 in that draft ahead of Purvis Ellison and Danny Ferry. RIP
Brian Thomas Facts
Wish there was more interview footage of Hank Gathers. He was a very charismatic young man who was actually a communications major and wanted to get into broadcasting when his playing career was over. A very well rounded dude that left us way too soon.
Here in 2023! ❤
Tutored Hank at LMU. My buddy. Miss him hard.
Man this was hard to watch, Hank died when I was a junior in high school. Our entire high school basketball Team was in shock!! We all wanted to shoot our free throws with the left hand but our coach was like, “HELL NAW!!!” Lol
With some of the best high school basketball coming out of Detroit, we needed every basket.
RIP HG!
Lol yo coach was. Scandalous
R.I.P Big Bank Hank miss you bro
Great brotha 💯🙏
NORTH PHILLY! DIAMOND/SUSQUEHANNA/RIDGE/CECIL B/YORK! REST PEACEFULLY HANK. STILL MISSED.
I think the offense put stress on Gather’s heart! Loyola Marymount averaged 122.4 points per game that season. That racehorse offense only allowed one or two passes before a shot. For instance, the score for that LSU/Loyola game was 148 - 141.
Great point.
I found your channel like a few weeks ago and I literally haven't stopped. Your insight is always credible to me. Never biased or going strictly off narratives. LOVE your content!!!
HoodieLUDaGoat Ma guy 💯✌🏾️
@@stuntedgrowth same here fam.. Can we get earl manigault stunted growth.... don did the movie that's still classic we need your take on him... Salute
Real shit
RIP ; BIG HANK !!! You Are My Favorite ATHLETE ; I Remember When He made Shaq , and Stan Roberts Look Like School Kids !!!
Remember him clearly, in my opinion was the best player in college basketball 🏀 💪
This is truly a sad ending to such a bright future this young player had. befor got rest in peace.. and may God give his family peace and beautiful memories of him. Also, give his mother comfort, because that's something she will never get over. God comfort the family. 😔⚘️😔
Rest In Peace 🙏
Hank "The Tank" Gathers will never be forgotten, great video man!
I remember reading his book "For You, Hank : The Story of Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble". as a kid dude was hell of a player. Philly's Finest, was high motor rebounding machine.
Never will forget that day!!!
North Philly stand up!! Shout out Stunted! Another stunt would be the coaching staff, threaten to put him on the bench if he didnt take his health more serious.
This is 1 of the greatest what if's in history, they talk about Len Bias but what if Hank would have made it
He was such a handsome man! RIP🙏🏽🦋🕊
Gathers had the chance to be a star in the league... tragically, he never had the chance to experience it. Even when you are at the top of the world, you never know what's going to happen... truly sad, such a young person...
Shaq said hank use to give him hell on the court said he was a great player.
R.I.P HANK
He was a very, very good college player. Not sure if he would've been a hofer..undersized 4 man in the 90s would've been tough. Can you imagine him guarding KG, Cwebb,Tim, Sheed, Mcdyess in the 90s giving up 3/4 inches, plus weight. I think he would've been solid. The system was really set up for him and Bo to get buckets, BO struggled in the league.. we never know though. Life is precious.
Aaron Hutchinson Charles Barkley said hold my pizza lol. I feel you though. The school was all them!
@@stuntedgrowth facts. I thought about adding him and Malone, but reconsidered and tried to align with maybe his peak years..guys who hindsight we know now
The strength and conditioning coaches in the league would have put weight on him gradually over time. I mean.... Look at Shaq . I remember as a little kid hearing about Len Bias and Hank Gathers . This is really sad .
Charles oakley & Anthony Mason survived... Tyrone hill.. Its alot of PF that couldnt do what Hank do that survived tha 90s
@@rollinstonemoula9689 they were 6'9+ he was 6'7. Yes he could have played in the L. But coming he based on his college productivity he was looked at as a start/allstar type. His teammates Bo got drafted high, but it didn't work out for him
Great job on Hanks story!! Still sad when u think what could have been.
Tragic loss. I remember that team very well. I remember the night it happened.😥🙏🏾
Nice piece bro!!! Could u do the UConn Huskie player Khalid El-amin? He was my favorite pg who didn't go anywhere in the nba. Or Jason and Jeff Capel.
I Remember LMU Basketball Practices being held on The Race Track at The School Instead of being in The School’s Gymnasium like other NCAA Basketball Teams … That Team was Built on Outstanding Conditioning… They used to just simply Out Run Teams …Back when Teams used to Run & Gun .. It was Nothing to see 100 to 120 point Games on average back then…Hank and also Len both made Me Cry as Boy because I was a True Born Hooper and Student of The Game.. I Truly felt like We was All Robbed of The chance to see These Guys take The League to another level.. Both Guys were Humble 6”8 Built Strong with Tremendous Conditioning & Relentless Rebounding Skills and a lot Heart …I could Imagine Len with The Celtics & Hank being Coached by Don Nelson( Fast Paced Small Ball )…I still think about “The Only Ifs”.. And go back & watch more Highlights!!!…The Good Guys!!!.. Rest Up Kings!!!!🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾✊🏾💪🏽💯
RIP Hank Gathers.
One of the biggest what if’s in sports history.
Very sad what happened to hank gathers r.i.p.keep bringing good content on the not so big names.
That LMU team was my favorite team to watch of all time. Gather's wasn't considered to be a first round draft pick, though, which is why he played all four years. Sure wish he had a chance to play in the league though. Back then, a power forwards game in a small forwards body didn't seem to work and LMU player stats weren't taken seriously because of their style of play. His death was the saddest moment in sports for me.
Health issues woulda derailed his nba career.. When he started using his heart meds his production suffered. Healthy he coulda been a atg
One note of correction: It wasn't that Hank wasn't able to get up, he was in the midst of standing up when his coaches forced him to lay down. Had he have been able to get up, move around, and have his blood circulated, he could have survived. I mean, his basketball career was over, but he could still be alive today.
Bless his soul
Don't over publicize or popularize gun violence in Chicago, ESPECIALLY if you don't live here.
I remember recording that movie on my VHS
He was sooo good. So strong. Sleep well Hank.
I just finished watching the movie "Final Shot: The Hank Gathers Story" on The Grio TV channel today. My very first time watching this movie was around 1993 when it had first aired on ABC and I was in the 7th grade. I didn't know who he was at the time, but what really connected me to Hank Gathers story was his gift for basketball, his sense of humor and his devotion to his family. I always felt saddened after watching the movie's ending, and was left wondering what happened to his son Aaron who was only 6 years old when his father passed away. But the good thing is that Hank Gathers made history, and he left a legacy. May God bless him ❤️❤️❤️
i remember watching his biopic when i was a kid that shit came on nearly everyday for like 2years “The Final Shot” was the name of it!! #92 is the year i believe
Another great video ....30K subs OTW congrats on 25k subs. I remember tht game I was in elementary school RIP Hank Gathers #Legend. Gotta do Reggie Lewis next
Loyola Marymount vs UNLV classic battles during 89-90.
I was watching the game when Hank collapsed. So sad.
Hank was the truth 💯
Im from Detroit & loved Derrick Coleman's game (he is from the D as well) but Hank was much better
How about a Stunted Growth on Hank Gather's teammate, Bo Kimble?
He was phenomenal. So sad that he passed away..May he rest in peace..
Please do one on Baby AI. Val Brown, left way too early from GW. Used to play against him and do my thing. Always thought he was not NBA ready and thought he could of been if he stayed all 4 years possibly or at the very least would of increased his chances in getting into the league.
Damn he was killin Shaq,,48 points 13 rebounds....
Shaq was 17 , Hank was 23…
Do one on reggie williams from georgetown
This has stayed with me because his untimely death was a day after my birthday.....I was watching the game
Sleep peacefully Brother Eric😔🌹✊🏿🏀
#HANKGATHERS
#LEGEND🏀
Sad story. Just a kid who loved to play ball and then sadly passing away to what he loved doing. Rip Hank
Great job 👏🏾. This is a tough one and a very sensitive subject. I didn’t know about the medicine choices he chose to do. Great insight.
Can I see your stunted growth opinion on Earl Manigault if you take requests? I like how you break the game down and you drop jewels when you create these legendary hooper videos.
Ayyyyee!! I requested a hank gathers and bo Kimble video!! Gud looks on the video never knew he collapsed next to Erik spo!!! Maybe we can get one on Reggie Lewis?
R.I.P. HANK💯💯💯 LEGEND!!!
North Philly Stand ⬆️
Loving the content! Keep it up bro!
Man I remember this squad, my last few years in HS
Holy shit i remember hearing all about him when it happened but back then i didnt watch college basketball. He was built like full grown man Lebron James as a 19 year old. Pictures with him playing Shaq at LSU it was he not shaq that looks like the big guy on court which is unbelievable & that stat line of 48 points and 13 rebounds he put up against LSU... wow what a shame...
Shootout to Dobbins my main man "Heat" Gates (#10) was also best friends with Hank and Bo.
Philly Legend
All man, good content.
I respect that his pride didn’t stop him from shooting his free throws that way
What a sad story. Didn't know Hank went to USC or Loyola Marymount.
My cousin is his son. RIP Big Hank
Salute. R.I.P🙏
Definitely knew about hank being from philly he will always be a b ball legend here unfortunately with his condition at the time they just didnt have enough research on his condition plus his stubbornness didnt help because he was so competitive rip hank
This is one of the guys who could have challenged MJ in the 90s expansion era along with Len Bias and Reggie Lewis. #RIPlegends
I think one other contributing factor is westhead's run-and-gun play on steroids called the system. Their practice was harder than the actual games. And since hank is their ace then he operates on both ends which would be really jarring.
sad...him, Bias and Reggie Lewis
1 of biggest WHAT IFs in basketball history right there with Len Bias R.I.P
The NBA would look totally different if they had made it
Goddamn this is such a sad story. I was in the 3rd grade when this happened, and it feels like it was yesterday.
That aside, I don't believe he was going to be a great pro. Of the guys who lead the NCAA in points and rebounds, they all went to smaller schools playing against lesser competition. Xavier McDaniel at Wichita State, Kurt Thomas at TCU. XMan was a great pro, but he played much differently than Hank. And Kurt Thomas was merely a high end role player. Plus Westheads style lead to inflated stats. The only NBA team who played that style at the time was the Nuggets and everyone pretty much agreed that was a gimmick offense that couldn't win it all. Though who knows, maybe if Denver takes him at 3 instead of Chris Jackson he does become a star. Bo Kimble was a pretty crappy pro outside of the Westhead offense, and I would predict the same for Gathers. I don't think Jersey would have ever picked him over Derrick Coleman; he came from a more prestigious school and was considered the full package and new prototype for power forwards because he had moves down low, could shoot with range, put the ball on the court, pass, rebound, and block shots. But LOL he only did that in the NBA every once in a while when the mood struck. Coleman is one of my least favorite players even to this day...
Wow 😢
This was a loss kind of like Len Bias in 86. RIP
I had Hank pic on my wall along with Lionel Simmons. I took it out that SI magazine NCAA issue. I grew up near Philly....cats were devestated. And Lionel was better imo
Supa Dope Fam
North philly great dude was raw
Could you please do a story on Dontay Hicks. Point (GOD) Guard from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who played for Allen Community College (1996-1998) in Iola, Kansas then went to New Mexico but had a heart ailment so he never played Did get to play division one basketball. He had worlds of potential and died playing in a pickup game in December 2009.
If he went into the nba draft in his junior year, the physical they do there would’ve found his heart problems earlier and maybe saved his life. He would’ve never been approved to play at that level
How about DerMarr Johnson? Early 2000’s pick of the Atlanta Hawks. Had crazy hype & potential but some rough circumstances
Yo you should do mike James that man is a bucket and I wonder why he’s not in the league
Following the players losing their lives trend unfortunately, I believe a good video would be Reggie Lewis gone too soon 🙏🏽
We gotta get a feature on Scotty Renoylds from Villanova. He was a beast In college & never really got a shot in the league.
Showtime Sports Media Already did.
Stunted Growth oh cool. Can we get one on Patrick Ewing Jr or The Harrison twins from Kentucky?
Can you do Louis Bullock from Michigan please
I loved Hank Gathers but DC was going first overall (unless Larry Johnson from Vegas decided to leave a year early)
crazy story...never knew his story like that. don't know which is sadder, Hank's or Len Bias
Bias was tweaking hard asf💯
Do 1 on Reggie Lewis
Joe Alexander ma guy. Please! I always ask!! Would love your opinion on why one of the best athletes ever failed miserably!
Do Reggie Lewis
Look up players from Indiana Iniversity like Landon Turner
✊🏿💯..😔
Bo Kimble would be a good one too...
Hank Gathers and Len Bias smh
