  • 'Nostalgic_Vintage_Retro' (NVR) drive along the 8th Ave, Manhattan, New York City in 1940s. Compare street views back then and now, driving habits of the Past. How much of a difference 80+ years of progress makes? Don't you think that not only pavement was better back then?

You can almost smell the exhaust fumes and lead in the air. I got enough of that in the 1960s thank you very much.

Yes, I agree. I smelled exhaust fumes with leaded gas in those days until leaded gas slowly diminished in the mid-1970s when the catalytic converter was installed in new automobiles and trucks that did not accept leaded fuel.

The light background with dark numbers on the New York vehicle license plates seems to indicate this was filmed in 1941.

The building to the left at 8th Avenue 42nd Street was the original Pennsylvania R.R station. It opened in 1910.

I'm surprised the streets of 1941 look so litter-free. Before the "Don't be a litter bug" campaign of the 1960's folks dropped trash from their hands or car windows without a second thought.
