The commercial can be found on RUclips under the name "Ontario SuperStar Bingo Commercial 1997" and at @34:00 it's mentioned that it'd been around for about a year and a half. I think it must have been shot around 1998-1999.
Wow, does this ever take me back. Long before smart phones, could still smoke in a bar, AHHhhhh, good times! I was in my 20's during this time. That lady on assistance looking so young, she's in her 70's now. And most of the seniors (all more than likely) here, they have all passed by now. Child tax credit was 300 per child and came out on the 21st of the month in Ontario during this time, if you wanted to know. I had one child and I put that money into an ReSP from CST directly and my daughter's college was completely paid for by the time it was her time to go. She makes 40$ an hour now. I can't imagine how things would have turned out for her had I taken the money for myself.
BTW, we wouldn't need charity bingo if government would manage its resources properly so people would be willing to pay taxes to support the programs these charities provide.

The documentarian has misinterpreted the Gross Household Income graph. It's true that 45 percent of bingo players have incomes of $29,000 and below. But it's also true that 55 percent of bingo players have incomes of $30,000 or more. This includes 25 percent with incomes of $50,000 or higher.
Fact is nearly half of the players are on poverty incomes of $29K or less. $49K is not a good level of income if you have children. I don't think she misrepresented anything as she said most players are from the lower income bands. The lady being interviewed characterised players as middle income and above - which is more misleading. It is in fact - middle income and below.
What's the positive about organized bingo? The only ones who will profit big time is the event organizer. How much of that goes to help others or the players ? Why is every gambling game, always focus on the government? Why not focus on the poor and help the needy/living poor?
i dont know any blackjack players who act like she described.... however, that statement would be more accurate if she had said "poker players" rather than blackjack
I don’t care how churches and the Knights of Columbus spin it, gambling is gambling and the house always wins. Also people regularly playing Bingo also do Keno, scratchers .. all highly addictive wastes of money. With the money spent these folks could hang out with each other a couple nights a week and enjoy movies and dinner in a nice restaurant. I have been to a casino twice in my life both times to see a show. I gambled a small amount both times and won a small amount both times. I wisely took the money I won and left. The bus back to the hotel was full of mostly low income people who obviously couldn’t afford to gamble their rent money away. Two couples on the bus were obviously arguing over losses. It was truly depressing. And yet people still say, “ It’s only Bingo “ They would never say that about Blackjack or sports betting. I support 6 different charities. None of them offer gambling.
