  • Our investigation reveals more than $1 billion raised by the Mormon church in Canada has been funnelled to the U.S. rather than going to charitable works in this country. We hear from former members in Canada and elsewhere who say concerns about how money is spent have led them to leave the church.

@@raptman5425 so the idea of atonement and how it fits into our lives and can improve our capacity to act forthrightly is really beneficial when the person has internalized that idea for him or her self. Whatever mistakes we have made are already atoned, so there is no need to hang onto them or feel debilitating shame.
As an atheist, I can see the value in that lesson, and it largely parallels effective psychotherapy. But it doesn't have to be historically real, I don't need to pretend there's an afterlife, and I don't need to pay a lifetime tax in order to learn this.
It seems like the Mormon church is massively overcharging for pretty common wisdom that has underpinned Western ideals for 2000 years.

One of the big differences between The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other religions is that it is a lay church. People volunteer thier time. Even the President of the church is not paid. He had a long career as a heart surgeon before joining the leadership. This allows for more money to be put into serving others. Things like the welfare system (ranches, orchards, processing plants), education (universities, online degrees, training & practicums) and of course humanitarian projects. The church gave over 1 billion to humanitarian aid in 2023 alone. The church covers overhead so 100% of donations go to the projects.

That the church is the biggest proponent of education and helps those members of the church with discounted tuition as part of the program, just like state and out of state students where there is a separate rate respectively. Do you realize where the church grows in population that buildings are built mortgage free to house the saints congregating in those areas, to provide a place of worship. We need a true separation between church and state. Tax-exempt status should not be given to any church (cult) that advocates and teaches doctrines that have no basis in fact or reality. We should defund all of these institutions by making them pay the same taxes as any other corporation. This is important at this point in time because we are facing a mass extinction event that is, in large part, the result of doctrines that define human beings as a privileged species that is above all other species and which is destined to rule, and dominate all other life forms. This view forms the basis of our culture and it is the product of predatory religious practices that are destroying the ecology upon which all of us depend.

I was the main breadwinner, and after asking leadership (after the church published PROCLAMATION TO THE FAMILY) if I could stop working outside the home (separate from foster care), I was told NO, stating my husband was disabled (while he was collecting a WCB pension).

Everything takes money and it is the faith of those members who pay tithings that these wonderful blessings are expended to facilitate the growth. I think you are stuck with your prejudices and are judging very immaturely and without the full scope of the manner of stewardship over these sacred funds how it all works together. It's never been a secret that tithing money is used to supplement university education at BYU. I, as a Canadian, obtained my bachelor's from one of the smaller campuses and was often reminded that my low tuition was only due to the sacrifice and tithes of others. Tithing supplements the education of those from around the world who pay as little as $100 US per year to obtain a university degree (including housing, food, courses, and insurance).
A large portion of the land owned is orchards, ranches, and farms in the US that provide food for the churches' welfare system. These items are shared with those both in Canada and around the world. I'm disappointed no mention of the bishops' storehouses in Canada not mentioned. Other land holdings included those for chapels, temples, university campuses, historical sites, family camping sites etc.

To this man and anyone who donates money and want a tax write off on your taxes, then you are not really doing the donation for the right reason. The widow's mite in the Bible. I don't think that she said, hey! want a tax write off document for my donation. Or when Judas betrayed Jesus, she said what a false of a church I want my money back. I grew up in the Mormon Church. My Mom was a widow with children. The church never pressured my Mom to give a tithing. I don’t remember when was the last time I gave a tithing to the church. If I’m not making enough money to feed myself and my family…that means I don’t have the money to give a tithing. Guess what? I’m not giving a tithing. No LDS Branch President, Bishop , Counselor, Elder, or the president of the church is going to make me give a tithing.

I volunteer with our local food bank. The LDS church donates a tremendous amount of quality food to our location.

The church has a paid contract with Feeding America. It isn’t donated. The food is purchased from the church while it is produced with free labor of the members.

I am a partially disabled 70+ year old senior in the USA. I recently joined the LDS church. But to my astonishment, when I started asking questions from my better than usual Bible background and quoting scripture in support, I have been badmouthed and gossiped about from multiple male and female leaders in my “ward”. I’ve not been to church for over a year, and have texted the missionaries that “I feel so unwelcome due to repeated negative criticisms and false allegations against me, that I don’t want to step foot inside the church!” I’ve heard not another word from any of them.
I am heartbroken and stunned at what appears to be a pattern of prohibitions against women speaking up or questioning ANYTHING, especially those who are widowed or unmarried!
And prior to excommunication, there seems to be an accepted practice of a communication blackout and cruel shunning!
When I consider the stories about Jesus’ behavior and patience and words found in the Bible, I just feel like crying for “time and eternity” at the rampant mistreatment of those “others”, at the hands of these who claim to be the “restored” disciples of Jesus Christ!

Barbara, please read the book " The God Makers " written by 2 ex Mormons. One was in the church for 20yrs and the other man was in the church for 30 yrs. If you read this book you will be glad to be away from them !!! Just concentrate on the new king James bible. The Mormon religion totally contradicts the Bible. Many Many people have left and are leaving this church. This book will answer all your questions!!!!

Those donations for the poor are given IN ADDITION to the tithes. My family's donations were 17% of GROSS.

That's not even getting into the fact that tithe was collected by coercion, literally threatening to lock you out of temple access (and thus ordinances vital for one's salvation) if one did not do everything in their power to pay at _least_ 10% of gross income.

The crowning and saving ordinances are offered in our temples. Ever checked to find out the price of a Latter Day Saint Temple ? The need for these buildings of the Lord is increasing as we offer these ordinances to the world. With abt 35000 buildings in the world the money spent is properly accounted for. Millions of dollars arre also donated where needed.

Its God that asks you to tithe, if the church miss uses it then its on them. I'm not of this church but know God asks us to tithe to help others. Mate look at it as you are doing as God asks, and be reasured you have done the right thing
