  • One of Tennessee's biggest prisons is now under federal investigation, but the state comptroller's office has sent warnings to officials for years that the facility was troublesome.

I work for Arkansas state dept of corrections. We have the same staffing problems. I am usually responsible for 300 inmates by myself. What it cubes down to is how you treat the inmates. If you treat them like people, they act like people. If you treat them like convicts, they will act like convicts. Training needs to be revamped, there needs to be accountability for actions at all levels of employees, and the policies need to be adhered to

That can become an expression of self-fulfilling prophecy. When people are assumed by authority to be "criminally-inclined" and they are treated accordingly, soon they will resent this attitude toward them and act out in a way that confirms the biases of those in power.

Hopefully, this marks the beginning of a thorough investigation into jails and prisons across both state and federal levels. The current system is not designed to prepare people for reintegration into society or reduce recidivism-if anything, it seems to do the opposite. We have people incarcerated for a range of crimes, and while I’m not suggesting it should be easy, people, especially in America, should be treated with dignity, not like slaves. I was unaware of just how inhumane some of these institutions can be. We have a unique opportunity to help rehabilitate individuals and create better humans. Isn’t that supposed to be the purpose of our correctional system?

All prisons in TN are under staffed except maybe Morgan county. They don’t pay enough to deal with the pressures, dangers, stress and trauma the COs have to deal with on the daily. Everyone aint built to be a CO. Long hours, divorce and suicide rates are up for COs. They do a job no one really cares for they are law enforcement but get seen as babysitting security guards… its a shit show

how bout we fix the tax code, fix policing, increase the level of human rights in the country by adding 6 new amendments, and revamping the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 14th to meet modern standards and to get the constitution in modern compliance.
for example, the 2nd amendment, instead of reading "to bear arms" it would read "absolute right to self defense and defense of others by any means necessary from all threats foreign and domestic."
for another example, the 1st amendment would state in a modern context "right to free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of movement, freedom to protest grievances, and freedom to express by means of physical, sexual, cultural and scientific."
and a example of a new amendment is "all businesses, corporations and LLCs have to abide by the constitution"
and another example of a new amendment is "congress shall issue balanced budgets"

According to the state website, four prisons in Tennessee are operated under contract by private corporations, while ten prisons are still operated by the state department of corrections. The private corporation prisons were started after a federal judge placed a limit on how many prisoners could be placed in the existing prisons operated by the department of corrections, and the private prisons were considered to be a less expensive option for building new prisons. While the governor of Tennessee was a republican when the first private corporation prison opened in 1984, it wasn't until 2008 that republicans took a majority of the seats in the state legislature. Many of the political decisions that democrats currently blame on republicans, were actually made when democrats had a solid majority in the state House and had enough votes to block them.
