- When Hiss Golden Messenger returned to Louisville to play at Zanzabar, he graced our audience with a beautifully intimate set in our performance studio for WFPK Live Lunch. Frontman MC Taylor didn't come alone either, bringing with him frequent collaborator Phil Cook, an incredible musician in his own right whose previously visited WFPK to perform his solo material. Together, the duo performed a number of songs off of Hiss Golden Messenger's latest album, "Terms of Surrender," as well as some older favorites. Speaking in between songs, Taylor praised the influence Kentucky has had on his life and music, citing Slint and Wendell Berry as being particularly influential.
“One thing that occurs to me, we’re in Wendell Berry territory here too. And I think I can say with some confidence if it were not for the influence of Wendell Berry’s poetry in particular has had on me and continues to have on me, I probably would not be sitting here doing this for you right now. I find his work to be incredibly instructive and profound in the best ways. So thank you Kentucky for giving us Wendell Berry.”
Different level shit here
It's truly incredible how two instruments can create such depth of sound.
they are so connected and it sounds so perfect
My Wing is such a favorite!!
Phil Cook just lighting the ivories up on Jenny of the Roses. Damn brother that is some really beautiful "accompaniment." Loved the show at the Horse Shoe a few weeks back. Thanks for that boys!
What a beautiful damn instrument, I've never moved past the guitar but I need to learn piano before I clock out.
First to comment but not the last to enjoy.....hiss is the artist to take me deep into my humanity...towards the beauty and tension life invites me on....I cannot thank him enough....oh the music
I've been big as shit on these guys since I found both of their music but him mentioning Wendell Berry makes me understand why I feel his music, he's a poet.

Bryan Trusty Thank you.
Such a treat to listen to these two play music together.
Damn. You can feel it.
Couldn't agree more...the sound of integrity.
I just love Phil Cook! His solo stuff is great, but put him together with a great songwriter and the result is exquisite!
What a beautifully put together performance this is by JT and Phil... So intimate and at the same time full of vibrancy and power.. You don't need gimmicks and massed amplifiers to put something of beauty across... thanks to all concerned for this.
MC and Phil are such a good team
This is beautiful. Great music from the fellas, and wonderful sound/production also.
I concur with other comments. These two guys sound so great together.
For some reason I chose not to check out Hiss Golden Messenger b/c I couldn't get past the name.

The guitar is a Martin (CFMartin & Co). The model might be a 000-17, it is difficult to say for sure.
