How The Predator Movies Changed Over Time

- Predator is a movie that’s particularly close to my heart, I used to live with someone whose entire vocabulary was made up of quotes from Aliens, Robocop, some wrestling shows, and mostly Predator. So if you’re watching this, hi mum.
The Predator series at the moment consists of three films, with the earliest and undoubtedly the most iconic made in 1987, featuring Arnold Schwarzeneggar and Carl Weathers. The second film was released in 1990, and the third film came out a whole twenty years later in 2010. Now in 2018, a new set beween Predator 2 and Predators is scheduled for release. All the films are essentially about exactly the same thing - armed and able humans being hunted by a far better armed and seemingly far more able alien, or aliens - the Predators, or Hunters.
As a series I think it’s changed the most out those that I’ve looked at, in terms of individual films. Rocky changed a lot, but over the seven films of that series, it was kind of gradual.
Alien Resurrection is far more different to Alien, than Predators is to Predator, but the films that compose the series all occupy different places in the line of movie tones.
You’ll see what I mean shortly.
Movies Mentioned:
Alien (1979), Predator (1987), Predator 2 (1990), Alien Vs Predator (2004), Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (2007), Predators (2010), The Predator (2018).
I honestly love Predator, because it's a standard "rescue the POW's" movie until an alien shows up and suddenly it's a sci-fi survival film. Only in the 80's
but in the 90s there was 'From Dusk Till Dawn' which you think is a typical gangster kidnapp film until it 180s on you into an action horror vampire bloodbath movie :D
I believe Predator is an 80’s movie
@@jedaaa Niceone J, yeah, I was just gonna mention _From Dusk till Dawn_ myself... :)
They shouldn't have put the predator ship in the beginning
I basically grew up on Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, Terminator 1 and 2, Robocop and Predator 1 and 2.
In my opinion, Hollywood has never been able to replicate the superbness of these films. They just had some sort of magic spark bsck then which faded with time.
The guy doesn't even include "This stuff will make you a goddamned sexual Tyrannosaurus"

Its cute too
Predator will always have a special place in my heart. My mom recorded it on VHS back in the day but she missed the first minute or two, the scene where we see the spaceship landing on earth. So I was thrown into this awesome story about beefy guys slaying fools in the most hostile environment on earth and then - out of the blue (for me) - comes this unstoppable force, this hellish creature that bests those elite badasses. It was so goddamn awesome.
I swear that was the exact same for me. Except it was my dad. He would lose his shit at the "son of a bitch" handshake.
My girlfriend didn’t even notice the spaceship. I had to replay the start after it had finished and she said “it would have been better if it showed us the alien arriving.”
I first recorded it (VHS) from cable, later had the Laserdisc and finally the 2 DVD release. At work we all seemed to rant about it, "If it bleeds we can kill it." becoming part of the daily lexicon.
@@timothycurtis4744 But that would not just be foreshadowing more like pointing it out with a red circle and that's stupid.
Why did every older relative do that in the 80's/90's. You end up with an entire library of films either missing a few minutes of the start or the end cut off because they used a short VHS.

I thought it was pretty satisfying finding out a bit more about the Predators and their culture during the second film.
That moment when he threw the pistol to Danny Glover taken from Earth more than a hundred years in the past was a pretty badass moment. Not only for really showing off what the Predators are about (sure they hunt and kill humans gruesomely for sport, but they respect valor and feat of arms in other species, so they're very morally ambiguous) but also revealing the idea that they have been using Earth as hunting grounds for centuries undetected.
I feel that they gave you just enough tidbits of information about them to make your opinion of them increase, while at the same time having them remain mysterious.

I grew up with the first Predator film. Such a great overall movie ; IMO iconic. I enjoyed Predator 2 . I'd like to hope we could agree that the slaughterhouse and subway scenes were pretty awesome.
I really enjoyed the action scenes in Predator 2 where the alien Hunts and kills the Colombian & Jamaican drug gang members whilst successfully avoiding being detected by the LAPD, and leaving them puzzled and trying to figure out who is responsible for the wholesale slaughter... 😄 🍺

The opening scene is great
Glad to finally find a good channel that focuses my favorite franchises
Exactly my feelings about the alien trophy. Just leave it as a nod to a fellow humanoid space monster.
Agreed. But still, if they had gone with the Dark Horse comics version of Aliens vs. Predator, it could have been really cool.
God, the backstory of the AVP movie's production would make a great video all on its own. Over a decade in development hell before Fox got a pitch that was cheap enough for them. The original intent for the longest time WAS to go with the comic book story, set in the Aliens timeframe, with multiple scripts made based on that. I honestly quite like the first AVP, but I still scratch my head as to why it would've been so much more expensive to do the original version.
Sometimes, MrSnaztastic (sounds like a great kids sugery treat! "It's the great new Snazlberry flavour!!!)" anyway...Sometimes it's helpful to think of studios in a "Can't be arsed!" level of thought.
"Too complex...can't be arsed!"
"Too thoughtful...can' be arsed!"
"Too many sets required...can't be arsed!"
"Too many script pages to read....can't be arsed!"
"Will have to explain it better to my boss...can't be arsed!"
"i'd have to sell this to the board.....can't be arsed!"
"i'd have to raise more funds...can't be arsed!"
"i can do the least AND make money?...i CAN be arsed!"
I heard Kevin Spacey is in the remake.
Only because Michael Jackson wasn't available.
I heard they were going to flip the premise and have Spacey as the antagonist preying on young Predators.
Ha ha
I am convinced Predator 2 exists for two reasons. The first is the success of the original film. The second is some hack, probably a producer and not a screenwriter, said: "Predator took place in the jungle. But what if Predator 2 happens... in the CONCRETE jungle?" And everyone else yelled, "Brilliant!"
yup
I quite like predator 2. Its got a unique feel to me. Still nowhere near as good as the orignal tho
Chase Janus have to agree, I lived in LA during my childhood and I saw this one very young and just with jaws where I would ask if there was a shark in any body of water, I would ask is "there a predator on any of those buildings"?
But that's the same thing for Jaws 2 and Ghostbusters 2. Course they aren't as good as the originals, 'cause the originals are masterpieces of film. Held up to them, most movies wouldn't be as good.
Jaws 2 was very good and Ghostbusters 2 is good . Predator 2 is awful . What about Alien Vs Predator or Alien Vs Predator Requiem ? Those were okay. Predators was good too

Sums up my problem with all modern movies. They can't just be fun anymore. Always a message... A message they rarely have the right to try and make.
Sums up The Last Jedi, it doesn't have much in it this isn't message. They don't even try to hide it, straight up in your face feminist propaganda, set in a different galaxy... because reasons.
I'll be amazed if the latest Predator movie isn't message-ridden. I'll know from the trailer, lead character a white female, secondary character of some non-white male ethnicity, a white guy who's bad in some manner; how patronising to all these categories of human being. Why can't we just have good stories? Alien didn't need political narratives to make Ripley a believable character. That's why I actually quite like Predator 2, the cast make up in this regard doesn't feel forced for PC reason, wasn't an issue back then so much. Glover's character isn't superhuman, but he's certainly driven.
As long as Hollywood puts leftist politics before telling good stories, movies will continue being generally god awful. The last decent movie I saw at the cinema was Dredd, but that wasn't really a Hollywood production.
Messages in modern films? I think it's the exact opposite: most Hollywood films are just random cgi shit
Assiman, You are right about the cgi thing but that just adds to the cringe of their messages. Like the shape of water for example. Movie about a fishman monster and a woman who likes to fuck eggs. But ebil white people too!
Dunno, man. I think the 70's had more mainstream movies with messages.
I don't really mind it though. A film without a point or a theme is rather lame.
Totally disagree. I don't think every movie needs to be mindless fun. But I don't want my scifi shlock trying to tell me to recycle.
Been waiting for this since it was announced. Glad that you were able to make it.
The original Predator is still my favorite movie ever
Best action movie ever
I saw Predator 2 opening night and while I agree the old lady with the broom was tonally off the audience (and I) loved her. The auditorium erupted with laughter at the sight of the broom as well as her line to Danny Glover.
solidsnake58
My favorite scene!
I used to like her, but the fact she's plainly giving some other line while 'I don't think he gives a shit' is dubbed over, just feels mote and more cringey to me. More so than the effects of multiple predators appearing out of the steam at the end...
Interesting. It's been awhile and I guess I never noticed. I love Predator 2 but it's definitely riding on the nostalgia from me being a 13 year old boy at the time. Meanwhile, the original Predator is essentially a perfect film that I find myself revisiting much more frequently. I'll never forget I saw it at a sleep-over on a 17inch CRT and it had such a profound effect I stayed awake until the sun came up. I kept seeing that shimmer in the tree out the window.
Interesting idea that the xenomorph skull was simply a writer/director fandom easter egg rather than a deliberate insertion to link the two worlds.

I always thought the same thing- that it was a nod to the Alien films.
Predator is my all time favorite movie. As a little kid I used to make my Grandma watch it over and over. She wasn't a fan. Lol
Predator was a great movie.
I personally enjoy Predator 2 a whole lot more, I think it's pretty amazing.
Predators was just really really dull.

Couldn't agree more about Predators - Adrien Brody is hard to take seriously in the role and really hard to like; the rest of the cast are also all but ciphers and stereotypes; and it had nothing much to add to the series.
I'll add one more thing. You said that the predators become less interesting the more you know about them or the less they're in control. I'd say that along with that, they were almost completely neutered by the fairly anticlimactic reveal of the 'super-predators' - some misguided attempt to make something 'scarier' than the original beast. Something that completely outclasses, and wipes the floor with, the iconic version of the creature. (Similar to the Spinosaurus and the... _Indominus_ [ _hawk, ptoo_ ] in the Jurassic Park series) If that doesn't rob it of it's menace and mystique, I dunno what would.
Seeing how the Mission: Impossible films changed over time would make a good & informative video. M:I - VI comes out this summer.
The gangmember killed at the beginning of P2 is killed in the jungle camp in P1, it's the same dude, with the same hair do.
I suspected that myself also thanks to you for noticing it "El Scorpio"
Yep, quite well known stunt guy and minor actor Henry Kingi. In tons of Tv and movies over the past 30 years- Stir Crazy , TJ Hooker, Scarface, A-Team, V, Last Action Hero, Batman Returns etc etc etc
Watch enough 80's-90's action movies, and you will see that guy get killed a LOT
Is he like the movie version of Kenny from South Park....
Sven Ole Thorsen is also in a bit part in Predator and used a lot 80s and 90s movie including the Steven Seagal film On Deadly Ground as henchman Otto and he was cast frequently in early Arnold Schwarzenegger films

Wait, don't the aliens from Alien have an exoskeleton? Doesn't that mean that their skull is the black thing that we see, not an internal bone structure?
Thomas Kirkness-Little Lmao the Alien skull in Predator 2 is just an easter egg dumbass.
The alien in the first film, the big chap, has an elongated skull with no eyes under the dome. I'm not sure how it's confusing when it's a part of the very first creatures design.
Danny Glover Goldberg spearing that Predator on the roof was one of the highlights of my childhood

Predator 2 is notable for being the only film w/ both Bill Paxton AND Adam Baldwin. Each one the poor man's other.
This should be good. 20+ minutes of video, and a line that made me like it in the first 30 seconds.
This video is something I have come back to watch because this easily applies to any interesting franchise. Doesn't even have to be the Alien or Predator films.
Predator is one of those great movies, like Alien, where film makers never understand what made it great when they try to make sequels or copy-cats.
During the quotable lines montage I got goose bumps. this film is a masterpiece.
These are my favorite of your videos. With respect to your next one on studio interference, I hope you will also talk about the films that were improved or saved by studio interference, and the films that were ruined because the director had too much independence, and not just at the films that were ruined by studio interference.
The Crow: City of Angels, The Brothers Grimm, and Gangs of New York were all fucked up by Harvey Weinstein.
Reindeer Games and Blair Witch 2 Book of Shadows are two others ruined by producers.
Red Rackham Heaven's Gate springs to mind as an example of a film maker given way too much freedom
Thread Bomb, I'm not suggesting that interference from producers is invariably a good thing. There are plenty of examples where it has been bad. I'm just saying that there are also plenty of cases where studio or producer interference made a film better.
predator 2 is a good sequel.
Predator 2 is an underrated sci-fi classic...think about it fairly.
One things that I thought it was very well pointed out is the fact that Predator is indeed an iconic movie, but one of the things that made it to be so iconic were the performances of Schwarzenegger and Glover. And all the lastest entries of the Predator movies were lacking a strong leading role that could be easely identified the way Arnold and Glover were in their entries on the frachise.
Completely agreed on Predators. I like it well enough to accept it but can't say I've revisited it that often. A big missed opportunity is that they're transplanted to an alien world, but there's hardly anything alien about it. It might as well have just taken place on Earth jungles again. By the time Predators came around, audiences kinda expected extravagantly detailed fleshed-out alien worlds. There's that twist where everyone realizes they're not on Earth, sure but it doesn't really add anything to it.
Bro that adrien Brody voice got me so good I was crying
oh yeah, 20 minutes of georg! the short videos are nice, but the long form stuff is what im really here for.
Georg I really like how you attributed the slow presentation of the alien in P1 building the tension for the final reveal was a point made in the original review by Siskel and Ebert (At The Movies, 1987).
They're all great! Granted these movies get a little shitty-er as we go but you cant always get gold, all still great 😆🤘
The ingredients for Predators would have made a really good videogame when it was released. Switching characters to navigate the jungle, and fight specific predators with specific strengths/weaknesses, building up the story to fight the serial killer from that 70's show, and the Cowboy Curtis survivor. Using AI team commands or co-op to coordinate end boss fights. that would have been cool. If it was a videogame, people would have liked it more, because it was clearly for fans that already knew the franchise.
That opening joke!😂
Georg: "Stop being so grumpy, mum!
Are you on the rag?"
Georg's mum: "I ain't got time to
bleed!"
I think the same, what really sells this series for me is the mystery, and how much we know about then less we care. I guess.
Georg, this was a good video - as per usual - but I'll have to disagree on certain things. Such as the second movie having the predator(s) as less intimidating entities. Even when the predator is losing control of a situation, that is always by his own will. I mean remember, that predator wanted to come to earth, wanted a challenging hunt, wanted his own life to be at risk for the ultimate thrill. The species got the technology to level down the whole city with the equivalent of a wrist mounted tactical nuke, but that isn't the point. So when something goes differently than planned, its exactly what they wanted to experience.
Yes, we could only guess about things in the first movie but that remains true in the second too, its just a new set of questions. In some ways even the latest movie continued on with the answering old questions and adding more to wonder about, and that part was admirable. What the latest one missed for me was the display of competence on the human characters while both first and second movie started with establishing the protagonists and that they're no ordinary folk. In Predators however we're told not shown that these folk could be formidable opponents to the predators.
I've got sidetracked a bit :P
Anyway, great video. Keep up the good work! ;)

I thought Brody worked in a way, the unconventional casting made the character seem a little less cliche to me. I also found it interesting how the movie would punish characters for not believing in teamwork, sometimes in ways that seemed totally arbitrary.
wildfirelink i guess predators just look at kill count as opposed to fighting ability/skill considering he was a doctor that murdered his patients

I loved the first and second movies as a kid, but what really made me fall in love with this fandom was the books and comics. They did one of the things that you are criticizing the movies for though, showing more of the predators culture. I happen to think that was fantastic though. I loved learning about their traditions and what makes them tick. It makes them far more interesting then just simple one-off movie monsters, and makes them into something more complicated. They still aren't good guys by any stretch, but something a little more like anti-heroes imo.
the high inflections at the end of each sentence is torture
So basically what you're saying is leave it alone.
Yes.
I agree about pretty much everything you said about the 3 Predator films and how the VS series is kind of in its own separate universe. The one perspective difference is that I did enjoy Predators quite a bit for odd reasons. It is clearly not on the same level as Predator 1 and 2. I would even consider it a rehash more than a sequel due to the 20 years in between the films and some of the parallels of the plot and characters. However, in the perspective of the modern era of which it came out and also after the VS movies, it reminded me even slightly back to a different era of action films. The sad realization I think though is that a lot of big hollywood budget movies have generic stereotype bland miscast movie characters playing these big action roles now. Nothing will ever be done correctly with a rehash and modern movies in general tend to feel hollow and forgetful to me. Predators is no different and it suffers from this problem as well but again maybe its the perspective of low expectations that allowed for me to enjoy this movie. I guess call it a popcorn action movie to enjoy and then to forget.
I actually really like Predators
Ok now I want a Saturday Night live skit of Salvestor Stalone fighting a predator.
I really loved the Team Fortress reference. Good job!
That was on point :D
Hahaha! Amazing intro. I love your videos dude. 😌
I have no hope for the new predator movie since Shane Black is making it, the same guy who turned Iron mans greatest arch enemy into a junky and thought an iron man movie would be great without actually having the suit. The script has leaked and its got some weird BS about human dna merged with predators thats why they rip out spines to extract DNA, why the predators would dilute their genes with human is beyond me, also 2 predators wearing army cammo and working along side humans on the army base. The movie is going to be so bad but like the sucker that I am I'll probably pay to go see it.
Well you were right. The Predator did fucking suck.
Damn you are a prophet!!
Finally, someone else with the balls to call Shane Black a hack! I've always known it deep down.
I like Shane Black. But I would have preferred a Predator movie directed by Shane Black, which might have been pretty cool, over a Shane Black movie with Predators forced in, which ended up sucking.
The true reboot of the Predator franchise should be a prequel, taking place during the American Revolution. Thus making the connection to the end of P2 when the alien throws Glover the flintlock.
I really feel like what made predators so unremarkable was how underdeveloped all the characters were. The first predator had a fairly large cast and you cared at least somewhat about all of them. Like you said you get about 30-40 minutes with them before the predator starts hunting them. You see how they operate, how they coordinate and the banter between them. And when they start dying, you see how they react.
It really helps drives the tension when the audience knows who everyone is and that they all care about each other. So when they start getting picked off, and the team starts getting scared, it creates tension. The Dynamic of the team vs the predator takes center stage until its just the team leader vs the predator.
In predators, there's almost none of that. None of the characters know who each other are and most of them just don't seem to care. If they don't care, then the audience won't care. Hence why the film is so forgettable. It does take a while before the predators start hunting them, but the time before that is really wasted on shitty character intros before they finally agree to work together. When they start dying off, its really hard to give a shit.
An easy test to see if your characters are memorable is if an audience can remember their names. Predator 1 isn't perfect in this regard, as I can only remember Dutch and Dillon's names, but I remember each character with ease.
With Predators I can't remember any of their names and I'm not even sure I can remember all of the characters and I've seen this movie several times.
TL;DR, Predators lacks character, which makes it lack tension, which is why it's so forgettable.
Dutch Dillon billy Anne Mac is what I can remember from predator
As for predators... uhhh.. ..
"Laurence Fishburne really is the best thing in the movie."
You can say that about a lot of movies he's in.
So.. Hi Mum... lmao that was good.
Thank You for not making me wait for the handshake
One thing you didn't mention: Predator is basically a horror slasher. (except the victims cant fight back and are bad-asses instead of teenagers) That's why it worked. It was a familiar structure to 80's audiences. Being stalked and killing one at a time, but you enjoy the action of guys who could fight back. That's true of most original action films of the 80s. Brodie is fucking terrible and miscast. Totally agree.
I've never thought of The Predator as a horror slasher, but I guess that's true enough. Having said that, personally I have always avoided films like Halloween, Nightmare on Elm street, Friday the 13th etc. That's not to say I haven't seen them, just that I don't appreciate the supernatural aspect I think. More a sci-fi fan.
I totally forgotten how creepy the predator laugh was
Ruuuuuuuuuun! Gooooooo!
Get to da choppaaaaaaah!
The black dude who isn't Carl Weathers also happens to be a fantastic director. I'd assume you were aware of this, but you have such attention to detail that I'd imagine you'd mention it if you knew! Bill Duke is his name.
Gritty 90s Black Hollywood work. He seems to have been connected enough to get big budgets and high-ticket actors, but retains a certain indie film honesty.
Will you do Robocop next!?
I also notice after each new predator movie you appreciate the last one and how it isnt so bad after watching the latest one. Except the recent one. That one will for ever be shit.
Can always trust that a georg video will be great
Both the first film and the sequel were great and original action movies for me. The 80s jungle warfare and the 90s urban... warfare. Watched the hell out of both on VHS back then. Nothing was missing from the sequel, a completely new setting and story only expanded the original for me. Danny Glover as a cop and his whole team did a great job. As well as Gary Busey, one of the best for the ultimate covert-ops operative asshole character back at the time. Seeing Bill Paxton showing up in the movie and the Alien's skull at the end was a good tease. Good bunch of people making all those sci-fi movies, and good times.
I CLAPPED WHEN I HEARD THE TEAM FORTRESS REFERENCE. IT IS A THING I KNOW.
*IT BROKE NEW GROUND!!*
Mac and Long Tall Sally were the best things in the absolutely brilliant film Predator.
they took away the suspense and mystery...now they just making it pure action without a good story. Predators wasn't that bad because it kind of made you think about the two war clans and who the blood clans really are. The newest one is a plain joke.
Predator is perfect just like Jaws in a sense that the terror is based on your mind freaking out about what the thing might look like which is extremely clever because a shark and a predator are both beautiful agile creatures

The Queen What else would you do with them? They have been living at the bottom of my garden for decades contributing nothing to their upkeep. At least now I have a use for them.
