I first tried the skirtless on the willowvibe, for me I like fishing ball head and worm trailer. So it made sense to use this style of chatterbait. It has the best irratic action when paired w 1/4 oz to a 12 lb liter of floro, backed w 30 lb braid on a medium action rod. It fishes deep no problem with a slim senco trailer that I had made custom with uv glow powder, and chartreuse color and silver fleck. The retrieves I love are slow roll on bottom, ripping it whi k has the best side to side wide movement, and the snap and fall yoyo retrieve. It works great open water and around points or isolated cover. I got 3 bass from.the same laydown in a row with this setup 👌. I also remove the standard linkage on the original chatterbait and install a clip I believe this helps the blade start up quicker ,and imo adds a bit of range of.motion to the bait, as it has a longer range it can articulate up down and left to right as you rip. Or speed up the retrieve. I just removed skirts to try out on my other styles of chatterbait! Thx MS!

Here is what I find hilarious. When I was a kid and the chatterbait came out I had one tear off the skirt. I had a pack of Strike King tubes and threaded one on the bait. It worked awesome and have done it ever since. Had no idea this was such a big secret deal lol.

The Dep's Frilled shad works great for this, so does the Dep's 4" Death Adder, so does the Hog Famer Spunk Shad- never tried it with a tube but I love the fact that it holds on like that. I'll try that next. You got me started throwing a naked spinner bait and then I started throwing a naked chatter bait-- they both work better than with the skirt imo. I get more bites and they stay down easier- allowing me to move them faster and more aggressively without them riding up. I haven't fished slow one time this winter yet- faster and more aggressive seems to work better for me in this colder water. I think our bass spend most of the year oxygen deprived due to hot temperatures- so winter is play time for them.

I like the rigging tip, but have found that pushing the tube over the head "shortens" the swing of the blade and prevents it from hitting against the head. It definitely makes for a more finesse approach (less sound and less vibration). Maybe that appeals to the Smallmouth?

    • @MattStefanFishing

Have you ever thought to put a skirtless Chatterbait on the back center of an A rig? Wouldn't that impart a great shimmy to the rest of the umbrella? You throw in pop and stop pulses, and I think it would be a really special presentation.
Another interesting idea I've come up with for the A rig is incorporating Mann's Three For All on the bottom two jigs, which, of course, could be added to a solo skirtless Chatterbait.

@@MattStefanFishing My favorite mod to a Chatterbait itself is to bend a forwards cup into the blade on the sides with a pair of pliars. Not quite sure as I don't have them all. I think the chatter was more of a hype. That's why they have so many in the same brand. People may say the Jack Hammer is best or whatnot. I think the best may be either the Custom Elite with the shorter shank or the new mini one, depending on how you think and what you do. I'm talking about most effective or most generalized....with most hook up ratio and better swim action. The tighter the body should be the better. Again, a lighter jig and a shorter shank with more osillating tranfer may be best in my opinion, although the Jack Hammer is known for quick and decent vibration. At any rate, a compact jig will get hit more often than a bigger rig. Something to think about.

Few things I must say. I hardly use a chatter. Have a few. When I do use them, I noticed the skirt is actually a hindrance or a downgrade. I never fish them skirt unless it's that Booyah one with the blade in the middle of head as I don't trust that one more. Also, most trailers will have very subtle action to where they do not meet my standard. This is bc several reasons. Main readon being that the action is more at the head and cannot be transferred to the back of the long shank. Therefore, I am a boottail trailer user on these, and thus, leads me back to sb fishing. I do agree that a tube's tentacles have a very fluid and great movement under slight twitches. Tune into my channel and sub. I'll show you how to use mini tubes.

Not copy cat content when I i mention Randy and Jonny by name for spilling the goods and if you watched the video you'll see how I rig it differently and offer other options....In fact I think youll find i have lots of similar videos on this topic spread out over a long period of time.
