  • Would you have taken the route that this legally armed firearms trainer took? Would your other skills have come to the front, or would you shoot him as well? These kinds of encounters are why we post after action reports on Active Self Protection!
Original video, news story, 911 call audio, and more of the firearms trainer getting backed into a corner available here: get-asp.com/0enu
What does this video teach us about defending ourselves against an attack?
    1. A life of self-protection must be dedicated to avoidance, de-escalation, and escape whenever possible. You win 100% of the fights that you don’t get in, so make a commitment to de-escalate, escape, or evade any encounter you possibly can. Having good situational awareness will give you more time and opportunity to see problems coming and formulate a plan to stay away and protect yourself without danger to yourself or others. This is always our first choice as self-defenders. This legally-armed firearms trainer tried pretty hard to de-escalate and escape, and that was a wise decision that probably swayed the DA quite a bit.
Want to learn more? There are 7 additional lessons, 3 class starters for instructors, and links to more information about this deadly force encounter on our website: get-asp.com/0enu

That is why I prefer concealed carry... because if someone is being aggressive towards you, you can use your empty-handed skills, and only use your firearm as a last resort.
When you open carry, the moment someone becomes highly aggressive towards you, if you leave your firearm in your holster, it could end up being used against you, so it perpetuates the necessity to draw your weapon, so its less likely to be used against you... but if you concealed carry, then the perp wouldn't know you were armed, and therefore wouldn't automatically go for your gun.

For anyone wanting to know what happened, I will give a quick summary. Shawn Breland was the man who began the confrontation with the cashier. The firearms instructor went to get the plate number after the guy actually broke a law in front of him. After Shawn got out of the vehicle to confront him, he said he had his plate number, and the man followed him back into the store. After he had backed him into a corner, he shot him. Shawn Breland eventually died from the gunshot. The firearms instructor had no duty to retreat, was covered by Louisiana's stand your ground laws, and was not charged in this incident.

Yeah, they should have definitely allowed him to do as he pleases, even if it meant allowing him to injure or kill someone. [/sarcasm] You can dream up whatever alternate storyline you prefer, but fact of the matter is, you're benefiting from hindsight. Next time you're caught in a situation where an obviously unstable and violent man starts threatening your life or a loved one's, let's see how you handle things. He could be "dumping a bag of chips" one minute, and pulling out a concealed weapon the next. And when that happens, you'll probably wish a good guy with a gun was there to stop the nutjob chasing after you.

Sounds as if you'd prefer he be allowed to go on his merry way to harass more innocent people or perhaps even commit terrible acts against the defenseless.

Then, when we moved from Philly to a rural setting where people hunted and sailed and fished and rode dirt bikes on mx tracks, we bought a 22 varmint rifle and a 20 gauge shotgun to keep birds off my boat and also so any of my four sons who wanted to try duck hunting, could. In my divorce my wife falsely accused me in a police report “He’s got guns. He said he was going to stab or kill us.” I’m not an idiot. Obviously I did not say that. One does not stab another with a gun. One shoots with a gun. Further stab and kill are not synonyms. Therefore you would not connect them like that. But this is what happens to guns in our culture. Later she accused two of our sons of threatening to kill them. She told the police that unless they arrested the two boys that night she would be dead in the morning. That’s when the police caught on and the Attorney General of our state wrote her a letter.
The trick in life is to stay as far away from terrible people as you can. Nothing is more important for the quality of your life.

Ah, I see you attract the crazy ones too! Red flags? Please, I collect red flags. In all honesty though, I'm sorry you guys went through that. I've seen how an unstable parent affects a child's upbringing. A woman I dated about 8 years ago was a paranoid schizophrenic. Even with medication (her, not me), she was difficult to be around. She had a 10 year old daughter who was amazingly brilliant! Unfortunately, her mom wouldn't allow her to have much of a life outside of school. When I started building her mom a new PC, I asked if she wanted to help. Damn she caught on quick! And loved it. Not long after that, she joined the robotics club at school (where was this when I was in school?) and one of the years they made it to a state competition!

I just had an encounter with someone this crazy! I was doing work at his house. He had no internal control over his emotions! I believe he is psychotic and a danger to others...and after 2 weeks, I left. I felt very scared of him. I'm an Army Vet, and not easily shaken. I've been in fistfights when I was younger, lol so I'm not pussified...but damn! This guy was unhinged mentally. The littlest thing would get him upset...then he would begin to escalate it in his mind, and his temper would flare!
      Hypothetical scenario:
Let's say his car wont start? Most of us check gas, battery. Which he might do...but then he would walk around the yard, screaming...working himself into a babbling frenzy...blaming Ford, his wife for not checking the gas, his dog for making his wife forget gas (she had to pick up dog poop), he'd kick the car...
      You get it.
The guy was a felon too.

Well the shooter could have taken a huge risk to try and use hand to hand combat on a much bigger opponent. He could have easily gotten overwhelmed and shot with his own gun. He gave the aggressor a large number of chances to leave him alone. The aggressor sees he has a gun, but kept pushing and pulling on him and backed him into a corner. @dionp8164 7 лет назад

Most martial artists would not be carrying a gun to begin with and would rely solely on their hand to hand skills. The fact of the matter is, if you carry any sort of weapon for self defense, you need to be willing to use it when someone is going to close the gap on you. You cannot risk losing the weapon to them in a hand to hand situation. Losing the weapon means turning the attacker into a lethal threat and all people could easily die in the situation.

The attacker was clearly in the wrong and you have to be the dumbest person in the world to attack someone who is openly carrying and draws on you. Like come on people, use some common sense. So what if he was unarmed, if you are the aggressor either man up and be ready to face what you brought on yourself or go home. The instructor was defensive the whole time until he was cornered by a larger man with no obvious regard for his own life. If that's not a moment to use a firearm then idk what is.

Then you're complicit in his behavior. It's morally wrong. There's nothing wrong with getting the plate so the cops can catch him. It is your civic duty. '...for good men to do nothing.'

Unfortunately, it would be an extreme situation that would cause me to get involved as I am fully aware of my physical limitations.
You on the other hand, are completely unaware of your mental limitations.
I would have gone out to get the guys plate number, the coward that I am. You can stay inside with the girls.

BuckGreywolfe Good Lord! We're running out of MEN in this country.
Yet again I'll mention, the only CCTV we KNOW of is inside the store. There may not have been a camera outside. Also, they could live in a state without front license plates so standing at the door could have been fruitless; I don't know.
All I do know is, seemingly, anyone born after 1980 has no backbone and 'doesn't want to get involved'. Daily, you fail to realize this is your country/state/city and take responsibility for making it what you think it should be. In many ways. You're MEN for Christ's sake. This all reminds me of the bar scene from the movie "Open Range".
      It's disheartening.

+BuckGreywolfe It's also not your duty to stay put. He did not chase after the guy and try to detain him, he tried to get a plate before the guy drove off. He even tried to further deescalate by retreating back to the store.

This is just food for thought for several of the comments I've read on here, and we'll never know the true answer because we weren't there and we don't know what the firearms instructor perceived at that moment in time - but I think that before we condemn the firearms instructor for following the guy outside we again need that we don't know all the circumstances surrounding this. The bad guy may have implied he was going to get a weapon from his car or the instructor may have only had that concern. Or the instructor may have just been wanting to get his license plate. I just think it's important that we shouldn't be so quick to either condone or condemn somebody's actions when we weren't there to know what the good guy was perceiving at that moment in time.

It's not that he went outside it's the fact that he positioned himself behind the man's vehicle and took down his plates, basically trapping him. Should of let the cops review the tapes and do their job.

    • @EthicalPreparedness

I'm sorry brother, I'm going to have to disagree with you. What the guy did was a legal action (trying to take down his license plates) and it was the trouble-maker that then exited his car and pursued the firearms instructor into the store and began assaulting the guy. In the end here, I really think we need to put the blame on the bad guy and not the other dude. Please don't take my comment as being snarky, the typed word doesn't allow for voice inflection. Take care :)

I think the instructor shouldn't have followed the guy not unless the instructor is carrying a badge and enforcing the law. The police were already alerted of the incident and that's more than enough. The instructor should've just stayed inside the store and locked the door... remember the term, safety bubble?

2:31 I appreciated the fact that he didn’t like unload his clip on the belligerent man. He only took one shot and waited for the pain to kick in and for the guy to fall, instead of unloading his clip or taking multiple shots and saying his life was at risk for being cornered, which he. Might have been able to get away with since he was being cornered by an aggressive, larger male.

it appeared to me the instructor stepped outside to get the license plate number.
In my opinion, he drew and refrained from using his firearm because the unstable guy is larger than the instructor. The instructor gave the guy plenty of opportunity to leave him alone. Good job.
