Your videos are an excellent learning experience. Since I was a little child I watched my grandfather and uncle build all kinds of things. They were blacksmiths by trade, but I saw them building houses, furniture, etc. Many times I lied to my friend telling them I couldn’t play just because I wanted to watch my grandfather and uncle work in a big burn in the back my grandparents house. I’m 73 years old, they are both long gone now. During my genealogy research I contacted a 90 year old relative from my other side of the family who happens to be an Engineer. When I mentioned my mother’s last name he immediately remembered my grandfather. He told me the story that 5 Engineers could not solve a problem they had, but my grandfather, who almost didn’t graduate from High School, resolved their problem without difficulty. I felt so proud of him. I learned a lot from both of them, my plan was to be an Engineer, but I became a math teacher instead. Hi Martijn, I have a similar outdoor battery box set up. I put hay bales around the structure (and on top of it) during the winter. It's easy enough to move one bale out of the way in order to access the door and it works fantastically.
@@cindyzahn7063 Funnily enough it actually works as a solution to mice getting in - without the hay mice would go straight into the battery box, as it is the only warm place. Putting hay around it offers somewhere else that is warm for mice to dwell without the need to enter into the enclosure.

Mr. Doolard, a nice 10 kw diesel generator as a backup would hit all your needs. Use it when necessary it’ll charge your batteries and run your equipment on those days you don’t have other alternatives. As your property develops you’re going to find it impossible without one.
HI- Battery warmer idea...in gardening there are warming mats that you can put under your seed trays. They come in different sizes. You could line your lithium battery box with them to keep the batteries warm, they are low voltage :)
Certainly seems safer than candles in a battery box. After all, the heat of a candle can be high locally, and heat can be a trigger for fire (as well as flames).
There are many ways to make it work better, I am quite sure he is aware of it right now. From a little greenhouse, shelter to the warming mats and so on, plenty of possibilities; I look forward so see his solution.

@@christinahannahroberts6137 'cause he used stones of different size and thickness and as a result the roof slope is not smooth. A way to get around this problem is to use stones with regular size and thickness, which are available in Luserna quarries: obviously there's a price to pay because querrymen make a selection and that means time and money. If I had been in Martin's shoes I had faced the financial troubles of getting a brand new set of stones for the roof. I understand he used what was available on the spot, but since it is a complete restoration ,the Luserna stuff was a far better solution than using univen size stones. Another matter that baffled me, was that Martin did not hire anyone who was experienced in roof covering, just for a small length of time ( one week?): that would have spared him a lot of troubles and waste of time. Unfortunately Martin likes to do anything on his own and as a consequence he is unwilling to consider anybody else's advice. Thus I understand some extravaganzas, like making a kitchen in an open field and later on complaining that water pipes are frozen in wintertime!
Thank you Martjin for such beautiful videos. Even though you are filming yourself doing some very mundane every day things sometimes, it's always a joy to watch. The landscape around you is so picturesque. Keep up with the painting too, that looked amazing for only your second attempt.
Hi, great channel. I have a cabin high up in the mountains with lithium batteries. Temperature in winter can reach -30 degrees C. The only thing that works great in the winter for the batteries is a root cellar dug into the ground. Charging lithium batteries at low temperatures will kill them. A root cellar will keep the batteries above zero (4-6 degrees) in the winter. It will also preserve your vegetables. Back in the old days people put buckets of water in the cellars to keep them from freezing. Water "draws" the cold from the enviroment and release heat to the surroundings. Good luck.
Glad you found your "perfect" tool for scribing. I've only seen them in plastic. I like yours so much better, Martijn. Hi Martijn, Amazon sells Conture gauges that work perfectly for around $20. I have one that I used to cut new flooring to fit next to the stone wall by my fireplace, measurements were exact. Your painting looks beautiful, not sure a person could be more at peace then painting in a tent surrounded by such beauty. 😊
Hey Martijn, you can use car heated pads (for making a heated seat) to keep the batteries warm. I've insulated at well as I could and used a w1209 (ali) to only let it heat to keep them above 5 degrees. If the batteries get lower then 0 degrees Celsius, don't charge them. They will degrade massively

Greetings Martijn! I admire your courage for living under these difficult conditions. None of it slowed your progress, nice gutter support also your painting was a success from what I could see. 👍❤ Stay healthy and warm.
What I noticed most this week were the sounds in your winter wonderland. The crunches of your footsteps, the falling of sleet, stream running in distance, and the birds singing. You absolutely nailed your painting! (No pun intended 😄) It is very nice. I had a wow moment. 😊 Your scribing and gutter planning is looking good, too. Even in your discomfort, can I say misery?, you managed to smile at the frozen yogurt, frozen laundry, and airbnb "Today I choose both". I just wonder if you have inclination to feed the birds? They would thank you and it could be rewarding. Although, I know you have much on your plate right now. I hope your week will be good. I'm not sure how you do what you do, what keeps you so motivated, and upbeat. Thank you for sharing with us.
Martijn, you can make good little heaters from using a lit tealight candle, an up-turned terracotta clay plant-pot and a larger one over that. The two pots store the immediate heat from the candle and it'll emanate out like a radiator. Golden rule: the pots MUST be bone dry, any moisture in them may result in exploding pots.
In you I see someone taking a self-directed path doing all kind of things for the first time, challenging yourself. And Many of such channels have the fast forward parts, where you bring a wonderful sense of steady going, much space for silence and contemplation and taking in nature.
You may consider buying a gasoline powered generator. It would help with all the sawing and as a backup in bad weather. Love your videos and thank you for sharing.
I agree.. suggest a multi fuel generator and tied to your very local grid.. I would guess that the generator could be set up to automatically start/stop when the batteries need charging or protection from the cold etc. Maybe your charge controller could handle controlling the generator also.
To insulate the batteries 🔋 it would be an idea to clad the enclosure with foam insulation board, a damp proof barrier then build an earth embankment around the enclosure to help regulate the temperature extremes in the winter months…at least around 3 of the sides so you still had access.
You may be feeling cold and having some inconvenience, but the snow and weather makes for sublime visuals, especially for someone who never sees snow. Thanks for sharing.

Need to find a way to keep your water constantly circulating to keep it from freezing. I use a mountain spring for my water which is gravity fed. I let it come down the mountain through my home and then goes out a pipe into a small creek behind my home. I have great pressure and it never freezes even on the coldest days. Need to insulate that battery box with foam on the inside and maybe run a light bulb inside as well. Just ideas from another “ off gridder “. You do great work, my friend. I admire you , greatly.
I always enjoy and look forward to your videos. Peaceful is definitely a word I'd use to describe your life there in the Italian Alps, along with beautiful, serene, remote and thoughtful. Thank you, Martijn. Until next time.

You did a very good painting! I was a professional potter for over 45 years, I have to give it up because of multiple back injuries. I still do a little bit just for pleasure, I started joining two groups of painters, I enjoy it very much. I was told by one of the group member to join the group exhibition next year.
My friend! Completely finish the battery box with thick foam, 100 mm! And the roof and the floor under the batteries! Inside for heat:: 1. Either turn on the incandescent lamp. 2. Either pour hot coals into a metal or ceramic dish with a lid. Put it on a stone or a board (so that the plastic does not melt). I'm counting on your wintering!)))🙂 My Monday morning coffee is dear to me under your videos!!!))😉 From Russia with love! Good luck, my friend!🤝
Absolutely gorgeous! I love your videos for the photography and the serenity, it makes my Sunday! Lots of advice already, I'll add my voice to creating a heat exchange between your generator and the battery box and running a small heater (incandescent bulb, heated pillow..etc) in the box for the batteries. As for running water, which is the most important, you might consider moving your indoor plumbing schedule up a bit and putting it into one of the cabins at least temporarily. That way you can get a feel for where things can go when you are ready to build out the bathroom and kitchen.

Yeh I saw this episode in wee small hours too in NSW. Wishing you a good day and hope u feel better soon..
Happy Sunday everyone. All our Sundays would be poorer without you Martijn.
The battery shed may need double wall with better isolation ... it's all expected to be frozen except you though 😀

How lovely after the snow, when the clouds step aside and let the sun shine on these pearls on the ground, it just tickles the eye. Paradise on earth.
Hi Martijn, I have a similar outdoor battery box set up. I put hay bales around the structure (and on top of it) during the winter. It's easy enough to move one bale out of the way in order to access the door and it works fantastically.
I see lots of mice liking that idea
I have done the same. So easy and great for the garden in spring
Brilliant idea!! I hope he sees your comment!

Yes there are pressure mats too that you use in outside cat beds that only heat to low temps. Your idea is a good one!
Certainly seems safer than candles in a battery box. After all, the heat of a candle can be high locally, and heat can be a trigger for fire (as well as flames).
they use about 20-60 watts. In the long run thats quite a lot
There are many ways to make it work better, I am quite sure he is aware of it right now. From a little greenhouse, shelter to the warming mats and so on, plenty of possibilities; I look forward so see his solution.

You are so inspiring. All people around the world want to say : Thank you loner wolf 💙
Martin,
put an electric heater with a temperature regulator in the electronics box for photovoltaics, the weakest is enough, it will keep the temperature above zero there with a consumption of a few hundred watts.

That roof restoration job is an impressive achievement.
I would say not that much...
@@KingofUrukhai how so?
There's something to be said for the animals who, this time of year, go into hibernation, the perfect time for rest and restoration. Hopefully, this time next year, you'll be able to rest and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Meanwhile, thank you very much for sharing God's gorgeous landscape of Italy's alps with those of us who would never otherwise get to see it. God bless you, Martijn. May His Angels keep you healthy and warm this winter season.🤗
Seeing you work under hard conditions gives me such a hopeful feeling like life is beautiful. There is nothing like a man building a home !
Oh my goodness that painting is awesome. I’m not an artist but in my humble opinion I’d love to have that hanging anywhere at my house. Great job M
I would also!!
As would I... there is no limit to this mans talents 👍👏👏👏💖
Well said Sandra!!!💖💚💙🤗
Once again I am so impressed with the photography. The remote drone sequences and time lapses add so much to the production.
In the bleak mid-Winter, frosty wind made moan. Yoghurt hard as iron, laundry like a stone. Snow had fallen snow on snow, snow on snow. In the bleak mid-Winter, not so long ago. 😉

Music is beautiful for this. Always a pleasure to watch your videos pal. Thank you
Your house restauration is clearly a labor of love. Artful shaping of the gutter holders, made of genuine walnut wood...
Having your indoor kitchen ready for next winter will make things easier then. Your design and building of that (probably very minimalistic) kitchen is indeed something to look forward to. Your videos are quite addictive :) Thank you.

Boy, your filming compositions (such as at 19:45) would make Terrence Malick proud.
Those views of flying over the mountains are breathtaking.
These videos are so heartwarming. They give a daily Christmas vibe.
Its a good idea. Also I just watched a Will Prowse video on a battery with built in heaters.
Get a car battery warmer. Up here in Canada they are a fairly common item, and available in most any car parts store.
Yeah battery heating pads would also work. Just had the car seater heaters laying around. Would advise the thermostat, that will save energy

I am very impressed by the vision, planning, execution and creativity of your photography. Surely there is recognition for these things.

Your surrendings, God's Grace !
The Snow mantle breathtaking....⭐⭐🙏
THANKS
Martijn, you can make good little heaters from using a lit tealight candle, an up-turned terracotta clay plant-pot and a larger one over that. The two pots store the immediate heat from the candle and it'll emanate out like a radiator. Golden rule: the pots MUST be bone dry, any moisture in them may result in exploding pots.
I do have tea light candles in a tea cake container with terracotta clay pot - it does help to keep my flat warm.
So very beautiful and peaceful there in such an upside down world these days….the war weighs on my heart.🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
In you I see someone taking a self-directed path doing all kind of things for the first time, challenging yourself. And Many of such channels have the fast forward parts, where you bring a wonderful sense of steady going, much space for silence and contemplation and taking in nature.
Dude, get a load of hay bales from a farmer and stack them around and over the Battery shack to insulate the cold out.
With pure admiration from the great state of N Y!
You may be feeling cold and having some inconvenience, but the snow and weather makes for sublime visuals, especially for someone who never sees snow. Thanks for sharing.
Wow. Is there anything this man can’t do?! For someone who has never painted before, you have a clear talent.
I've been thinking that myself. How does he do all this stuff (filming/editing to building) with such excellence?
I'm quite disappointed, caught your channel a few weeks ago but now I've watched them all from the beginning and now have to wait for the new one each week! I really appreciate how you approach everything you work on, great attitude and very relaxing to watch.
same for me...all caught up... but they are delightully rewatchable... I watch Martijn on a 65" OLED... stunning
Mate, how on earth do you do all that work, systematically, alone, in the freezing weather, losing power!? You are soooo organised and determined! AND, how do you get those beautiful overhead videos paralleling you in the car, and way above the clouds too?!? They are incredible! ❤️🦘
Persevere Martiin...persevere! You have done amazing work...and all the while you filmed it, edited it and then provided it for us. I have watched you accomplish so much because of your generosity, creativity, and fortitude. Thank you for the beauty that comes from that.

Life would be very strange if everything worked without any challenges, because meeting the adversity is what makes everything interesting.
Living without knowing how to appreciate every detail of those moment is a waste of time.✌️

Martin, bedankt voor 47 afleveringen ik wens je een prettige kerst .
I was wondering how you will deal with harsh winter in such a secluded spot. I command your strength and determination. Love watching your videos.
I always admire your positive attitude and your dedication for perfection on your house. I’m glad you went to town to regenerate. Your painting is coming along very nicely your capturing your surroundings beautifully. Stay well, keep warm and take care See you next week.
You did a very good painting!
I was a professional potter for over 45 years, I have to give it up because of multiple back injuries. I still do a little bit just for pleasure, I started joining two groups of painters, I enjoy it very much. I was told by one of the group member to join the group exhibition next year.
Forgot to also mention. Your painting is so beautiful!
Watch your video it's a peace, serenity moment and deeply impressed me. Thank you.
My friend! Completely finish the battery box with thick foam, 100 mm! And the roof and the floor under the batteries! Inside for heat::
1. Either turn on the incandescent lamp.
2. Either pour hot coals into a metal or ceramic dish with a lid. Put it on a stone or a board (so that the plastic does not melt).
I'm counting on your wintering!)))🙂 My Monday morning coffee is dear to me under your videos!!!))😉
From Russia with love!
