I've been watching these videos for about six months. I feel extraordinarily relaxed watching, I think, because this is life lived at the pace it is meant to be lived. Martijn is choosing a life which many, clearly, would like to live. We can all live a life more closely aligned to what we would like if we had a little more courage. The thing which strikes me about these well-made, short films is that week-by-week the progress is inexorable: Martijn moves forward, things change, mistakes are corrected, life moves slowly on. The Slow Movement, which started in Italy, has much to teach us. Martijn, I imagine from his cycling adventures, understands that slow works. What can we learn from this man? Each life is different. Each life works in a different way. To understand how to derive the most from your own living you must take risks. You must stand still, while you are still moving, in order to understand who you really are. To understand what is right for you. Think: what goes wrong in most people's lives? they have no idea, and spend no time, exploring, what is right for them. This is not a series of videos about renovating a mountain retreat . . . it's a philosophical exploration of exactly what it means to be an individual exploring the best life . . . and this might not be the end. Hi Martijn, A fantastic job, I have been watching your build since the beginning. However, as a DIY carpenter, boatbuilder and very long term woodturner I would respectfully suggest that you purchase some good sharpening stones for your various tools. Not only can I see in the videos, but I can hear from the cutting that whilst you were working on the gutters that the drawknife, the planes and the chisels are very blunt! This makes your work so much harder. Also, grinding hollow bevels (on the grinder you have) on the tools and then honing the edges with either an oilstone or perhaps a diamond hone will radically improve the cutting tools. I hope you don't mind me suggetsing this, but I've been sharpening various edgetools all my life. My very best wishes for your fantastic and courageous building project. David Constantine
“Thanks for watching” ? Thank YOU Martijn for making such beautiful videos and inviting us to spend some time in your amazing world ! It is therapeutic and compulsive viewing.
I live quite close to that valley and you've been one of the first people I thought about the day it snowed so much. 🙂 Glad to see you managed everything very well! 👏🏼
I live in an area in the Alps similar to this one, and a fun fact: back in the days, a century ago most of those terraces were without any trees, because they were used for animals and for farming. Every time I go hicking and see a group of terraces I try to imagine the mountains without trees and full of life, from humans and cattles
Gutter brackets are so beautiful. I just cannot imagine that much snow. It truly is a breathtaking place. Thanks Martijn as always I love the aerial views.
Step by step, stone by stone, day by day… Enjoying the process and what nature brings each day, respecting your own pace, flowing when facing adversities. I’m touched by the veracity and beauty of the way in which you show what you do. A wise man, learning humbly from every experience. A man of deep thoughts and deep feelings. It’s amazing how you transmit all these with so few words, in such a simple way. Thank you Martijn. You’re inspiring my daily life. Greetings from Chile
I just showed your last video (6 days old) to my neighbors this morning and here's your new one! Love them! So peaceful to watch the beauty of the landscape and your dedication to your home.
One morning, in a high mountain cabin, I found myself brushing my teeth with a block of ice: my damp toothbrush had frozen overnight. I remember the divine hush over creation that only that huge feather pillow of thick new plush snow creates. Loved your visit over the hill to the friendly priest, neighborly Fr. Johannes; loved his story. More power to you, Martin :-)
Hi wonderful man may you be fine this work on your cabin and everything you have done,, I love the video clips when you walk around the mountain magic is a small word you are a gift to each one who watches on youtube happy new year and blessings for the year ahead and thank you for sharing all you do
I am amazed with your positivity and survival skills. It’s a harsh weather to survive in the mountains without basic conveniences. Bravo, that’s a character, that’s a determination!
I wonder how you balance your relatively solitary life and lone working (apart from the occasional visit from volunteers) with the knowledge that thousands of people are eagerly awaiting your videos every Sunday (myself included). Thanks for letting us join you on your journey Martijn.
Thank you for making your life available for us (public) to witness. It brings my heart joy to see such choices made in life when so many are way beyond materlistic. Your nature towards all is wonderfully refreshing! Kudos and the place is looking great!!!

You may already be aware of these, but a company called Arbortech makes woodcarving discs for your angle grinder, they remove material very quickly and might be handy for shaping the inside of your gutters.

Good old Joe from Philly. Hope he's doing OK. Some especially powerful music, Martijn. The mountains -- in such cold clear air -- look so close. The glowing tent after dark, the night sky.... There -- the top of Orion off to the right just after the painting scene. All so satisfying. 🙂

Thanks for the latest video Martijn. The amount of snow really does make working conditions more challenging. The views are simply stunning though, especially the night sky contrasting with the snow on the mountains, pure majesty of creation.

Hey Martijn! You are so motivated working in the cold wintry night time. The mountains looked amazing. Great getting some help. Hope you have a Merry Christmas, all the very best, Pete.
I am glad it is you out there & not me !!! I am a southern man & really cold weather with or without snow can take a hike !!! tropics & deserts are my cup of tea & as few clothes as possible !!!
I never get tired of that view, which you seem to frame so nicely. It's nice that you had some help, and that you've kept moving and keeping warm. It's only been in the low 20s F here (a few degrees below freezing), but I've grown intolerant of it in my later years. I'm impressed to see you working so hard all day and then finding time to paint and produce such nice videos each week.
I know how you feel about the temps. It’s in the 30’s &40’s F where I live but it feels so cold. I just don’t think I was prepared enough for the change in weather.
That's a gorgeous shot at 1:48! I have always marveled at the interplay of light and dark, of shadows and light. Thus, I love dawns, dusks, and moonlit nights. There's a vibe to it that just transports me into an indescribable realm. Anyway, those white powder-y snow looks lovely! Looking at the picnic table set, I kept thinking of "pinipig"😅, a kind of ice cream in our country. It commands respect how you treat your tasks especially anything that has to do with wood like they are pieces of art. You take your time, you have the patience, and your attention to details are so admirable!

Sorry about the haters Martijen. Congratulations on not engaging with them. We are still big fans of yours. Jo gave a good report of what really happened and we thank him for that. Just keeping taking the high road. Merry Christmas to you.
Hi Martijn. You should build or buy for yourself a finnish sauna with waterheater stove. A small wooden cabin and Kota Luosto VS kiuas stove. You could melt snow to make washing water if waterpipe is frozen. In wintertime shower sucks and warm sauna rocks! Greetings from Finland and thanks for the Best "show" ever!

I always hit the "like" button before watching the video because it's always guaranteed to be great. I am so jealous of the snow; still waiting for it to arrive where I live. It's late this year. Winter is difficult with snow, but living without it would be harder.
an idea for your gutters: build a track guide on the edges, and make a fixture rig to hold your circular saw on an angle. Then you just need to slide the saw down the track and continue lowering the guides.

Spectacular mountain scenery, and the warm glow of the night lights on the workshop.
Martijn - your content is like meditation to watch, so wholesome. You are a true inspiration my friend.
Gutter brackets are so beautiful. I just cannot imagine that much snow. It truly is a breathtaking place. Thanks Martijn as always I love the aerial views.
A difficult week all round! Nice that Johanas is back for a bit of company in the worst of Winter!
Step by step, stone by stone, day by day…
Enjoying the process and what nature brings each day, respecting your own pace, flowing when facing adversities.
I do not believe there is a world where Martijn does not take excellent care of his tools . Great program ,thank you .
Stunning work Martijn. Best videos on RUclips by a country mile.
Why would you watch this stunning video and not leave a like? 👏👏👏🇦🇺😎🥰
The first-hand scenery of the beautiful Italian Alps for Joe, Congratulations! all the way from Philadelphia. An experience that will linger~~
Thank you for making your life available for us (public) to witness. It brings my heart joy to see such choices made in life when so many are way beyond materlistic. Your nature towards all is wonderfully refreshing! Kudos and the place is looking great!!!
Martin what a fantastic pioneering spirit you have. Your hand crafted wooden guttering is a thing of great beauty and functionality! Bravo! Thank you for beautifully documenting your mountain labours for us all...👏👏👏
Your place is so beautiful, and your doing an amazing on on the cottages. And that painting! Wow! It's had to believe you've only just started to try your hand at painting. I love it! You are one talented soul.
Martijn, your films every week are stunningly beautiful! Well done. Your work on the cottages is inspiring. We wish you the best for the end of 2022 and a good start to 2023.
I’m amazed at all the things you can do! I’ve been loving the things you do, and how your small homestead is coming along so well. You are a man of many talents. The scenery is magnificent in all the seasons. Thank you for these videos. 😊
I admire your perseverance ,to work in such harsh conditions.
The drone footage is spectacular.
You may already be aware of these, but a company called Arbortech makes woodcarving discs for your angle grinder, they remove material very quickly and might be handy for shaping the inside of your gutters.
My husband just said the same thing and I was going to put it in a comment; but you did it better!
Hi Matijn, you need to wear a water proof and wind block warm heavy jacket with hood and pants in this snow very cold weather you have. Don't you think I am right? Please take care of yourself.
We all love you. Thank you for sharing your life with us. By the way, loved your painting, it's so beautiful.
Bravo, you're so talented and smart person, God bless.
Jij blijft doorgaan in barre omstandigheden. Onbegrijpelijk.
Martjn your videos are on another level, they are beautiful, calming and just awesome.❤
Always keeps my interest in what's going on with your construction. Looks amazing but I'd want indoor working facilities during the cold periods. 🔈🔉🔊
God’s Majesty manifest in the mountains. Thanks for sharing this reality.
Good old Joe from Philly. Hope he's doing OK. Some especially powerful music, Martijn. The mountains -- in such cold clear air -- look so close. The glowing tent after dark, the night sky.... There -- the top of Orion off to the right just after the painting scene. All so satisfying. 🙂
Love your artwork Martijn. It's great. It amazes me that Joe didn't freeze to death in his little tent in the snow. He should have gone inside!
So happy to get this notification a amazing video to watch on a freezing 🥶 snowy Sunday evening all cozy inside in the Mountains 🏔 of New Hampshire in America 🇺🇸 !We just got three days of non stop snow ❄️ in all we’ve gotten about two and a half feet so far and more coming along….Stay warm

@@eliasilias8576 wow must be awesome enjoy
Lord have mercy Martijn you're struggling like a champion. For me this is living beyond off- grid. Thousand warmly airhugs for you trooper from a very cold Northern Sweden. 🎄🌬🎅🏻☃️🌟🎄
I feel more capable and motivated when I get out in my yard to do things. Thank you for your encouragement.
Good old Suzuki eh, that snow is relentless but no match for you Martijn. I'm forever in awe of you. Be safe until next time. 🙋🏾♀️🇹🇹
I remember building my log a number of years ago and working in the winter peeling logs. What I enjoyed was the process and the learning of new skills. In the end you will have a wonderful home. I live in the Rockies in Western Montana. The winter brings challenges, but the rewards are wonderful. Take Care Ernest PS I love what you have done so far on your home.
Ernest ? Who the fuck is Ernest?
Watching this wonderful program from Western Montana as well!! I use his show as a meditation - it brings me to a state of mind where I enjoy where we live all the more. Hello from Thompson Falls!!
It's crazy how your incredibly hard work makes such relaxing viewing for us. This video brought me a tranquility I desperately needed this evening. Thank you!
Thanks for the latest video Martijn. The amount of snow really does make working conditions more challenging. The views are simply stunning though, especially the night sky contrasting with the snow on the mountains, pure majesty of creation.
Ahhh the scent of linseed oil. I can smell it all the way here in Australia. Memories of cricket bats, equestrian equipment and furniture.
So lovely.
So great to see the Priest again and to know he is well and that even with him living so remotely he is still able to be in reach to help others. Thank you Martijn . Fantastic watching you continue doing your guttering from wood. It will look amazing when finished. You are a remarkable man enduring the cold and still creating what will be an awesome place to live. Take care 🇬🇧
That painting though!!!!
Oils are so difficult. Your many talents have amazed me but that painting is next level!
Hope Joe is alright and that you helped him out.
Amazing views, what a landscape! Please don't let those haters influence all the beauty you've being doing. Thanks for sharing again, you are a big positive influence for me!
Stay healthy my friend. Your courage and vigor is well earned.
Loving these videos and the work you're doing. Keep up the great work
You work very hard. Please eat well and stay strong during this cold time.
Yes, we got snow here as well. The good news is the days will start getting longer and the sunsets are long and beautiful when the sun is there.
Sorry about the haters Martijen. Congratulations on not engaging with them. We are still big fans of yours. Jo gave a good report of what really happened and we thank him for that. Just keeping taking the high road. Merry Christmas to you.
How to perfectly end the day, thanks for your work !
Wonderful video, we enjoyed it, as ever! Was great that Joe could come and help with scaffolding. The painting is beautiful!❤
We enjoyed seeing johannes again and I was so happy for him.
Many blessings on everyone who lives on the mountain.
I always hit the "like" button before watching the video because it's always guaranteed to be great. I am so jealous of the snow; still waiting for it to arrive where I live. It's late this year. Winter is difficult with snow, but living without it would be harder.
These videos give me the same feeling as eating one of my favorite meals. The snow, the drone shots, the building stuff... just perfect 👌
an idea for your gutters: build a track guide on the edges, and make a fixture rig to hold your circular saw on an angle. Then you just need to slide the saw down the track and continue lowering the guides.
Thanks for this magnificent video! Send many warm wishes over from Toscana to your mountain! 😊
HAPPY CHRISTMAS, MARTIJN. Thank you for 14 months of gifts.
Martjin, I’m so happy that you speak more about what you’re doing and why. Love your videos!
Magnificent! Thank You!❤
Not everyone is equipped for winter camping. That’s a specialty. Could Joe have pitched the tent in a cabin as you did last winter?
Amazing drone shots from above of the beautiful mountains
