  • By popular demand, here it is: "The More You Know" strategy guide.
    The More You Know will be a Heroes III series that acts as a strategy guide. The episodes will span at least the 12 days of Christmas where I'll be putting out a different tactic for Heroes III in each video. This -- is Day 3, Using Multiple Heroes.

    One of the biggest problems I have is knowing when I can win a fight.
    For example, in this video you just cleared a crypt on Day 1, I always thought I'd need at least level 4-5 creatures to do that.
    It'd be great if you did a video about when you can engage in fights and win.

      Ah, now this is an interesting remark to make regarding future entries into this series. To be honest however, I've nixed this idea for three main reasons.
      The first reason is that I can't go over every possible combination of fights you can and cannot do. What are your hero's stats? What creatures do you have? What creatures do *they* have? I don't think it's always as simple as saying "yeah, you can win this fight against a Horde of Pikemen with a starting army of Marksmen" and broadly generalizing it over lots of other possible fights as well.
      Secondly, I daresay that I'm not particularly qualified to talk about what fights are and aren't doable. There are fights that I have taken where I assume I can win, only to lose. In addition, there are fights where I suspect will be "easy", only to win at the expense of over half my army (ruclips.net/video/dDCZTKKDRCY/видео.htmlm18s is a great example of this).
      Perhaps the third (and most important) reason is that the fights that you might be able to do are quite different from the fights that I might be able to do. For example, the fight that takes place at ruclips.net/video/dDCZTKKDRCY/видео.htmlm42s is one that I was barely able to do without significant losses and was almost certain that I would lose (but took anyway out of greed). A player of a higher skill level, on the other hand, would've been aware that such a fight was possible and perhaps preserved more units than they did. Conversely, a player of a lower skill level probably would have stood no chance against that. Who am I to judge what fights each individual player can and cannot take?
      Having said that, while this idea would be helpful, you have to play it by ear a lot of the time (intuition). Knowing when to take fights comes with experience and is *not* something I can teach you in a 5- to 10-minute video. The purpose of The More You Know is to give people strategies that they can objectively use in most situations, and so I feel that this type of video would not be a good fit therein.

      cee eich ee double-u very late to this comment, but one thing you can do so that you can take harder fights earlier on is experiment with finding the most effective units available in each faction for the beginning game and go for those. For example, rushing toward Marksman/ crusaders on castle, thunderbirds on stronghold and vamp lords on necro etc. once you get a little more used to these units, you will find that for the most part they are faily easy to utilize and will expand the scope of what you can do early game.

    • @dwntherabbithole9785
      @dwntherabbithole9785 7 лет назад +2

      cee eich ee double-u knowing when to battle and when not to battle is also heavily reliant on your knowlege of the game. how fast are the units you are attacking, how much health do they have and how hard can they hit? Another thing to keep in mind is the possible number of creatures that might show up, for example fighting a griffin conservatory where the min is 50 griffins and the max is 200. having knowlege of these things and weighing cost and benefit is an essential skill in Homm3

    • @Altorin
      @Altorin 7 лет назад +3

      The longer you take to clear something the harder it is. So if you wait until you have tier 4-5 units you will probably need them, whereas if you hire a few heroes, make a decent sized army in week 1 and try you can probably do it easy enough
      When it says populations of dwellings increase or a specific type of monster gets a boost that doesn't only apply to cities from what I can tell, all things seem to grow.
      Or if not, perhaps a breakdown of population mechanics might be a good episode 4 lol

      I'm sorry that I haven't been able to pump out more episodes of The More You Know. I appreciate the polite request and your opinion of my strategy guide thus far, but unfortunately, I lack the time and motivation to create more episodes at the moment.
      Despite the relatively short duration of these videos, there is a fairly high amount of time and effort necessary to create each one which I would much rather dedicate to my Let's Play Heroes III series instead. I've put The More You Know on indefinite hiatus for now, but I'm hoping to continue this series at some point in the future.
      In the meantime, another content creator for Heroes III (Tyranuxus) has released a tutorial series of his own, which you can check out here: ruclips.net/p/PLqzKvhEbeCCNV6ODqE7z_DwHi070XVKkK. I hope this helps!

    Hi! I'm a big fan of your work, I really appreciate someone making great Heroes 3 content, as aside from the obvious nostalgia factor, I genuinely believe this is one of the finest turn-based strategies out there (to this day). I would like to make a suggestion for the strategy guide series: I think you should do faction guides. You could go over strenghts / weaknesses, heroes , economy, fighting (esp. late game) and opening strategy. This would be a great help, as I find that getting good information on a specific subject like this is hard (there are some guides on celestial heaven but they are kinda meh). Also I would really enjoy watching tactical analysis of late game fights, both against AI and Player opponents. So maybe after filming a let's play, you could make the end fight into a separate video and add commentary. Just an idea. Keep rocking man! :D

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      Hello! It's nice to see that others out there appreciate the content that I've been putting out for this legendary game. I share your perspective regarding Heroes III being one of the finest turn-based strategy games in existence, particularly in terms of enjoyment and immersion. :)
      First of all, since I feel that final battles against human opponents are my greatest weakness, I don't consider myself qualified to accurately analyze them. Thank you for the idea though!
      While I do value your suggestion for future episodes of The More You Know, the focus of the series is on gameplay mechanics (i.e. how hero movement works) and general strategies that are usable by every faction (i.e. hero chaining and the use of 1-stacks in combat). Furthermore, the idea of covering varying aspects of factions does sound interesting, but these subjects are informally covered by the matches shown in my Let's Play Heroes III series.
      Besides, I already know what topics the next episodes will cover. Right now, it's just a matter of finding the time and motivation to actually make the videos themselves.
      Keep rocking I shall. Cheers!

    P.S. Have a skill tree of: Scouting, Scholar, Eagle Eye, Mysticism, First Aid, Learning, Artillery, and Navigation, on a Fortress Hero that can only use Fortress units, on a waterless map, and you can only use that hero as your main C:

    Later on in the game, I always have the problem that one hero that has an actual army doesn't seem to be enough. I always get caught up on spots where my main hero currently is not present, leaving my side heroes without any army undefended. But when I try to prevent this by splitting up my army so my side heroes (at least some of them) have at least a bit of an army, my armies become to small very quickly. Should I actually split up my army or put all my units on one hero even in the late game?

    Heya. I don't know if 'The More You Know" is still a thing, but perhaps the next bi-anual volume could cover the ins and outs of maximizing hero movement? This can either be very simple and straightforward or more complicated, I suppose.
    Simple would be what is worth paying attention to in order to have a decent amount of movement every turn. I.e.: terrain, fast monsters, premature turn ending to temporarily unequip slower monsters for more movement next turn, etcetera. More complex could be, when to sacrifice movement speed - for example, should you include dwarfs into a seperate starter army? Or, what is and what is not worth exploring? And when is it acceptable to use your main hero to grab stuff that is unguarded?

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  6 лет назад

      Ironically, Hero Movement was supposed to be one of the upcoming episodes for The More You Know. However, I've put the series on indefinite hiatus until I have the time and motivation to continue making more episodes.

    A video about how archery works? :) Could include an explanation of how ranged damage is calculated, and also what determines how far ranged units can shoot without penalty. I also recall that you once said that ranged units shooting over castle walls suffer from a penalty to their damage. Thanks! Great content

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      I think a video on how ranged damage works (or perhaps even damage in general) would be a good idea, but I'd need to find time to make it. The general idea for ranged unit damage is this:
      - A ranged unit does 100% (base) damage if its target is within 10 hexes (not considering sieges).
      - Attack Skill will add damage on top of the base damage (based on Attack-Defense difference).
      - The Archery Secondary Skill will add 10%/25%/50% (Basic/Advanced/Expert) damage on top of the base damage, not factoring in Archery-boosting artifacts.
      - A target that is further than 10 hexes will only take half the usual damage. This is ignored when Golden Bow or Bow of the Sharpshooter is present.
      - During a siege, a target behind town walls will only take half the usual damage. This is ignored when Golden Bow or Bow of the Sharpshooter is present.

    I wish you would continue this series. Most of this stuff was obvious to me as a Heroes veteran but I did learn something in the magic video for example. And obviously as this would go on to more complex topics I would learn more.
    PS. If you see this what is your opinion on the games from the franchise other than 3, did you play and enjoy any of them?

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  4 года назад +1

      Yes, you're right - my intention with this series was to go into greater detail about more complex topics like Hero Movement and Poor Man's Town Portal. I've always wanted to complete this series as well, but it just requires too much time and effort to make each episode relative to my Let's Play Heroes III series.
      To answer your question, I've never played Heroes 6 or Heroes 7, but I've tried Heroes 1-5. I grew up with Heroes II a bit and I like the game, but I feel like Heroes III built on the strengths of Heroes II to go from being a great game to a masterpiece.
      I didn't spend nearly as much time trying out Heroes I, Heroes 4, or Heroes 5, so I don't have the most informed opinion about these games. However, Heroes 4 felt like too far a departure from the first three entries in the HoMM series for me to really get into it. I didn't enjoy Heroes 5 very much, particularly because the birdseye perspective combined with the 3D models often made it difficult to spot objects on the Adventure Map. Heroes I was alright, but it definitely lacked the polish and refinement of its successors.

      An episode on Templates is in the roster, yes.
      Also, with the removal of Mage Tower as a prerequisite building for Genies/Nagas/Giants and the addition of Experimental Workshops, I feel that Tower has gotten massive improvements from the original game. They have an ultra-cheap, powerstack-viable Tier 7 unit with other units that are very strong along the way. Even taking into account the relatively "weak" heroes of Tower (which can be remedied by switching to a different main hero, of course), Tower is honestly one of the strongest factions in HotA.

    • @dwntherabbithole9785
      @dwntherabbithole9785 7 лет назад

      a little late to the party, but hypnosis is dependent on the spell power of the hero and the amount of hitpoints possessed by the targeted stack. many creatures also have mind spell immunities. personally I prefer the spells blind and berserk as they both have somewhat similar practical effects and do not have the same limitations

    • @Auron3991
      @Auron3991 7 лет назад

      Honestly, gedon took a massive hit in three (more immune creatures, artifacts that stopped it, harder to get in guild).

    • @jehovasabettor9080
      @jehovasabettor9080 7 лет назад

      Here ya go, a bit of a reference guide.
      Hypnotize - useless. With a spellpower to control 4 nagas your lighting bolt would be able to send them into oblivion right away. The only way to make it useful is to kill off AI's stack to the point when you can hypnotize them and let AI resurrect it to full power - I only saw this trick once, and I wouldn't count on it.
      Fire wall - bloody great against mid-weak neutrals. There's dozens of youtube videos of Luna pillaging and wrecking havoc with a single pixie.
      Force field - pretty decent thing for cheezing your victory over two-hexes melee stacks. Don't work against the rest of the enemy types.
      Forgetfulness - at expert, turns archers into swordsmen, but without a sword. Doesn't work on Liches, so don't get your hopes too high.
      Earthquake - mediocre. Can facilitate wall destruction all right, but 6 single stack Cyclopes do a significantly better job at it.
      Mine field - mediocre. Random mine placement more often gets you wasted mana and no enemy casualties than not. And if you can cast it often enough to be of use, you most definitely could have used your mana better.
      Clone - at expert quite amazing, think of it as a "double movement" for your archers (at expert - including Titans). Could also be used to remove retaliation, but make sure that there's no units in enemy army that are as fast as the clone, or it will most likely be smacked before it makes a move.
      Armageddon. Glorious, glorious Dragoggeddon, with a warlock running amok with his Black Dragon and pillaging everything that isn't nailed down. Prone to running out of mana when you want it the least, and yes, enemies sometime have units that are immune to fire or magic, so keep an eye out.

  • @ScorpionID7
    @ScorpionID7 7 лет назад

    Now, I know this is kind of a noobish question, but how can I use heroes from differing towns without having problems with morale, and terrain movement? I normally always wait a week for a hero from my own town to appear in the tavern so I can effectively go into battles with them, as well as having no problems with terrain on maps (Like Jebus Cross), etc..
    (By the way, idk if you remember me from your streams, I'll be back, I promise, school has me by the ass)

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад +1

      Actually, this is a great question! But you might be mistaken as to how Morale works. Morale is affected by the number of faction types that are present on one side of the battlefield but not by what hero you use. If you use units from only one faction, you get +1 Morale. If you use units from two factions, you get 0 Morale. Any more factions than this result in -1 Morale for each additional faction with a maximum penalty of -3 Morale.
      So you can have an army consisting of units from Castle and Rampart being led by a Rampart hero, and (assuming no other Morale bonuses) your net Morale will be 0. If these units are led by a Necropolis hero instead, your net Morale will still be 0.
      As for terrain penalties (which I will talk about in a later episode of The More You Know), the basic idea is to try and minimize how much you move around on terrain types that hinder you when you're using units that are not native to that terrain type. You can read up more on hero movement at heroes.thelazy.net/wiki/Movement. I hope this helps!
      And yes, I haven't forgotten about you.

      My pleasure!
      In the upcoming episodes of The More You Know, I have no intention of discussing any of the topics that you brought up. The More You Know's focus is supposed to be on exploring gameplay mechanics (i.e. how movement works in the game) and teaching strategies that are usable by every faction. Furthermore, topics like "economy" and "unit choice" strike me as rather subjective, and I'd prefer to have these episodes lean more towards objectively useful strategies. For example, I doubt anyone will question the usefulness of 1-stacks and hero chaining, but there will probably be more than a few people who will raise eyebrows at my preference for rushing Wyverns while playing Fortress.
      The topics you mentioned are better handled through a combination of watching my Let's Play Heroes III videos and pulling up some pages on heroes.thelazy.net/. If you want to see how I approach economy and unit choice, then you'd get a lot more out of observing me play a match with the faction that you're interested in rather than a short 5-minute video that briefly tries to cover my approach for every town. As for information on artifacts and morale/luck, you can get this off of other sources online.
      Anyway, thank you for watching my content. I hope you enjoy your journey back into Heroes III! :)

    ok but how to use heroes efficiently later in the game? while im pretty okay using them early on they seems to be doing nothing in later stages of the game.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      Keep them as part of your chain until you get control spells like DD, Fly, and TP and adjust your hero positions accordingly. If you get new towns, buy out heroes to scout the nearby area if you have the Gold for it. If you have objectives (i.e. Crypts or Dragon Fly Hives) on the map that haven't yet been cleared, then move heroes to get ready to clear that out.
      I can't label all the different situations in the late game and how to appropriately use heroes in response to each, but these are just some general ideas of how to approach them. It's up to you to be creative enough to come up with solutions that fit each situation that is presented to you. :)

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      This is just one of those things I can’t make a good guide for. Decision-making in Heroes III is a skill that has to be learned by the player given time and experience. You can find moments when I’ve had to make such choices in my Let’s Play Heroes III videos, which act as a general guideline for how I approach such situations. Often, I opt not to return back to my starting town with my main hero to get armies or spells - to obtain extra armies, I use hero chains and towns of other AI players, while I acquire spells and spell points by capturing towns on the map and accessing Magic Wells.
      I would think it difficult (perhaps even impossible) to make a video that outlines all the possible situations you could be stuck in and how to tackle on each one. Besides, my way of taking on certain situations is far from perfect, and some players may find it easier to approach maps using playstyles that they themselves are familiar with.

      As for The More You Know, I already know the topics for each of the episodes that I want to make for the series. Unfortunately, I just haven't had the time or motivation to make such videos, especially since each episode takes roughly the same amount of time to make as a Let's Play Heroes III video.

    My biggest problem is when I use 2,3 main heroes at the same time, my force is not strong enough to defend my main town. Very risky it is.

  • @magnusm4
    @magnusm4 7 лет назад

    The problem I have is that if I have 2 or 3 heroes then if both collect exp from fights then if I restock units and explore then all it takes is 1 fight for him to be exhausted while my other hero is just as vulnerable. If I have too many heroes then the problem becomes scouting and collecting due to them not having any fighting units and they can't collect the loot and it a one way road with my main fighting heroes over 4 days away fighting.
    Then the problem comes when my first enemy is spotted. If one of my heroes stay then they just scout around or pick a fight. And if they do then I will either lose most of my units or lose leaving my castle defenseless. And if one stays he stays so no more attack, defense or exp just more units which the enemy wipe. And the moment I leave my castle they instantly just appear out of nowhere and takes it.
    I played on a map where you start on an island with another castle to the left, one boat dock and one teleport one way to another tiny small island with a knight castle. My problem was I was isolated and it was a map of islands so my trips took eternity plus capturing any town was too costly on top of 2 or so enemies with somehow big level monsters in masses and more enemies hidden with the same units while I struggled to have one hero like that. And this was on easiest

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      It seems that there is a lot being said here. What I'm wondering is what you mean when you say that it takes one fight for your hero to be "exhausted". Exhausted in terms of what, exactly? Spell Points? Early on in the match, you shouldn't be running out of Spell Points against Wandering Monsters very often. In fact, you shouldn't even be using magic in most of the opening fights that you take since they're generally very straightforward.
      Without being there to witness the situations that you're talking about, it would be quite difficult for me to give advice as to what you should do in the situations you outlined in your comment. Such knowledge can only be gained through playing and learning more about Heroes III. Rather than address your entire comment word for word, I would encourage you to watch my Let's Play Heroes III videos and observe how I approach the start of each game. Pay close attention to how I take fights, position my heroes to quickly transfer units back and forth between them, and how I deal with enemy AI players. Of course, I don't play flawlessly by any means, but there are a few strategies that you can pick up from taking a look at how I start off in a few of my videos. It might help to practice on a lower difficulty setting as well.
      By my own admission, I'm not very well-versed in water-based maps, so I have no comment regarding the map you played on in your last paragraph.

      What type of discussion regarding non-combat skills are you looking for, exactly?

    • @Auron3991
      @Auron3991 7 лет назад

      I was just thinking some of the basics. I've seen people scoff at skills like estates for example, but I've found it very helpful on low resource maps or for smoothing the cost of Tower's units. Recognizing when pathfinding is critical or can be delayed/ignored (lost me games before). Scouting a map to see if navigation is useful (another painful loss, more to me trying to be clever than anything). Even the scouting skill early on (on a disposable hero of course) to get more of the fog removed early.
      Of course, most of these come from situations I've personally been in, and from across the entire franchise, so they may not be represtative in high level HoMM 3 play. Feel free to inform me if I sound completely nuts.

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      I see. So you want me to do an episode for the other Secondary Skills that are underused/underrated/situational. To be honest, I don't know what I'd even say when discussing most of these Secondary Skills. Would I talk about what the Secondary Skill does? How it's useful? Also, I'm one of the people who scoff at Estates.
      Since most PvP games are played on Random Maps (typically, ones without water), you shouldn't ever need to use Scouting to determine whether or not you need Navigation. Pathfinding will be touched upon in a later episode.
      Either way, I already have the central ideas behind each of the remaining episodes planned out. I just have to get around to making them. :P

  • @GoroV88
    @GoroV88 7 лет назад

    Ok so multiple heroes. Every hero needs an army to win a fight, and starting from day 1 wild creatures goes higher and higher in numbers. So you simply have to recruit an army. This equals weakening main hero army which can be defeated by opponent hero. Having multiple heroes for further exploration in all directions disables transporting the army to main hero in time. Solution?

    • @TheKnownWorld
      @TheKnownWorld  7 лет назад

      Ideally, you’d want to have your full army on your main hero at the end of your turn if you know that they’re in danger of being attacked. But during your turn, you’d transport the full army between each of your heroes so that they can clear fights before you return the army back to your main hero.
      This strategy was supposed to be explored in an episode of The More You Know on “Hero Chains”, but I haven’t gotten around to making it yet.

      I expected something more advanced, but still watched ^^'
      What about prayer? I believe in one of the campaigns the main hero has prayer specialty, and from what I remembered I was just like haste+stats, and a hell of a lot

      I really do apologize for having forsaken this series. There has been just far too much on my plate as of the past half year for me to be able to continue this series alongside the other content that I’ve been putting out on this channel. Lack of motivation is a problem, too. Don’t lose hope, though - I shall continue The More You Know someday!

      I think that even to this day, some people still play "Hero of Might and Magic III".
      That'll be my next challenge as well. :P

    Makes me wish a mod to set automatic patrol routes for multiple heroes in the late game.

    It's trickier on 200% difficulty. The forst 2500 gold you gather may better spent upgrading the town...

    • @TheKnownWorld

      The purpose of this episode isn't so much to recommend people to get heroes before building a Town Hall or vice-versa, but to suggest having more than one hero at a time (especially in the later stages of the game). From what I've seen, there are too many players who fall behind primarily because they focus too much on using a single hero to clear out the map when they should instead be using side heroes to do trivial tasks like picking up free resources.

      This is the last of my "basics". For "real interesting things", you might enjoy the next episode.
      However, don't get your hopes up too high. There are some individuals who are too skilled for these guides to be of any use.

      But I do play on 200% difficulty. And even then, I still spam as many heroes as I can reasonably obtain as soon as I'm able to.

    • @TheKnownWorld

      Sadly, yes. Despite how short these strategy guide videos are, each episode takes a much longer amount of time and effort to make than a standard Let's Play Heroes III episode. As a result, even though I have the next episodes already planned out, I've decided to put The More You Know on hiatus for the time being.

      Sandro is soul, Sandro is spirit. give him to me in a Beastmasters and Witches world, let him have an army of insects, the victory is his.
      Sando is the triumphest.
