I'm in the last stretch of Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon, and the breadth and depth of relationships in this book is stunning; one might even say it's a book about the nature of relationship in some ways. Plus, the writing style is gorgeous, the plot unfolds naturally, and dear god the cover art is to die for.

Highly, highly recommend the Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty. It feels like it's going to be a romantasy, just to explode into being one of the best epic fantasies I've read to date. Djinn, centuries-old wars, heavily political world, insanely good character arcs and complex, intense and fascinating world building. Seriously couldn't put it down until I'd finished all there was to read!

An old fantasy writer of the 90s, but the Vows and Honor trilogy by Mercedes Lackey is a favorite of mine. Two oathbound women, bonded to fight demons and corruption to pursue their dreams. Both come from trauma but nothing graphic is verbalized. The bond between them is what I enjoyed the most. Oathbound, Oakbreakers and Oathblood are the three separate books, not very long ones either.

I would recommend the Blackthorn&Grim trilogy by Juliet Marillier - its super slowburn and the author doesn't just do the romance well; all the character relationships in there are top notch. For those that don't mind slower paced books with a fantastic plot but not very action driven. Also extremely atmospheric (set in pre-Christian Ireland).

I remember reading the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn trilogy from Tad Williams when I was quite young. I was like 14 at most but more around 12/13 probably.
So these books where quite hard for me at the time as I also only started reading when I was 10/11, now I was gifted the LOTR trilogy and I was just completely lost in those books so my dad thought the The Dragonbone Chair would be easier ... and I really fought my way through those books because I really liked his "elfs" and a certain sub-plot about a princess (not the main pair , but Maegwin). I fought through 3 BOOKS just to throw the last one out of the window with I think 200/300 pages left because ... well I didn't get what I wanted... NOT AT ALL! In hindsight it's a very small part of the story but I was so invested in that relationship!
I was so angry. I never finished them and I promised myself I never will :p

I was such a big fantasy reader back then. Someday I got swallowed by the romantasy genre, which is completely fine, because I really enjoyed it and had so much fun with it, but after a few years everything got so repetitive. Especially since booktok entered the stage. Now I jumped back into the fantasy pool and I feel so comfortable there, it's so refreshing. Like diving in cool water on a hot summer day instead of the lukewarm pool you're usually so used to.

I don't want to watch this video (stopped at 3:45) because I still want to read all those books and don't wanna get spoiled in any way. This said, I think Sanderson is pretty good at this. I love the relationship between Sarene and Raoden in his first novel , Elantris, and the same goes to the relationship between Vin and Elend in the Mistborn books. Another author is think is really great at developing relationships in his books is Anthony Ryans. I love his characters anyways, but what makes it special to me is how he makes all those different relationships look meaningful, be it the platonic ones like Vaelin-Lyrna or the romantic ones like Vaelin-Dahrena. And at a time where I really dislike that (at least on goodreads) the first question to a new book always seems to be "has it LBTQ+ content?" instead of "is it anyhow good?", I really loved how he just narrated the romance between Reva and Veliss in Book two without even making the tiniest bit of fuss about it.
So by all means, do romance when it fits your story, but when you make your story ABOUT romance, I'm out. Unless it is writtten by an author whose work I already appreciate, so even if it is romantic fantasy, I can at least be sure that it is well written. Then I might make an exception.

    SPOILERS FOR RHYTHM OF WAR
Maybe only jasnah and hoid are a bit questionable but i like them too bc it's so interesting, and you're not supposed to think they're a good couple anyway. Jasnah is the queen of Alethkar, she's just very useful to Hoid, and Hoid is the first person she thought could be on her intellectual level. They are in it for their personal benefits, that's the point. So i even like that one, it's interesting.
