I kept screwing this up an hour before my test back in February 2020. Ironically, when the real thing came about, nailed it first time. I write this sat parked up at the services for the night in a DAF XF so that tells you where it got me.
I did the opposite, during my lessons my reversing was spot on. Came to the day of my test and totally screwed it up. So my first test lasted all of 5 mins. Was told i could do the rest of my test but i had already failed so thought what's the point. Nailed it on my 2nd test though!
The filming and the commentary are brilliant. Really well and professionally done. I imagine your training is just as good.
I sat my class 1 in Glasgow many years ago. It’s amazing how the reversing just clicks with you. The first few days I could not get it right at all then bang it just happened and no matter what position I got into at the beginning I was able to get it into the bay - much to my instructors amusement -
On the day of my test I got the head tester my instructor told me he was super strict. I started the manoeuvre and reversed perfectly into the bay I lined up the peg with the cone and thought brilliant that’s that but done. I jumped out for my one allowed check walked to the back of the trailer and nearly passed out! I was about 20 feet from the yellow box. We didn’t have a barrier at the back just the painted box. I got back in glancing on the way to the window where my instructor was looking dejected. I reversed and stopped but I couldn’t get out only the tester. I was sure I had blown the distance and I had by about half an inch. This had been drummed into us as an immediate fail so I was devastated then we headed out to the road and I just drove relaxed cos I knew I’d failed. When we got back and he said I’d passed I actually burst out laughing he looked at me quizzically and I said I thought I’d blew it in the reverse I thought I’d gone over the allotted part. He said you did by a tiny bit and if your road drive hadn’t been top notch I would have failed you! I had three diagonal lines on my sheet I still have it.
I tell you all this to say no matter what you do before the road drive even if you think you’ve failed drive as if you haven’t you never know they just might pass you!
It's amazing how it does just click. I was terrible doing the reverse on the lessons, so bad they changed my instructor. I failed miserably on my first reversing test as I hit the B cone. So after the training school put me on with another instructor he told me to do a 12 o clock to 6 lefthand turn on the steering wheel when my rear trailer wheels get to the B cone and at the same time don't overthink it. I can't even remember doing the reverse test I didn't even think about it, I just went for it. I was awful at the uncoupling and coupling too. But I passed. If I was to give anyone any advice on the 3A test. Don't overthink it, just do it.
@@Zooumberg my instructor told us he has seen an acronym used for the uncouple/recouple which was BLACK.
Brake, Legs, Airlines, Clip, Kingpin.
He didn’t like it because it left out the number plate and because airlines didn’t account for the electrical lines.
I used it with a slight modification NBLACK.
Number plate, Brake, Legs, Attachments, Clip, Kingpin.
It got me through.

Just doing my class one driving side no probs reversing FK me had to cut it short today my brain just isnt computing when i just get to b cone doesnt help doing it on a slope on uneven ground was ready to just jack it in told instructor im done had enough for the day my head was ready to explode you say it took a few days tomorrow is my 3rd if it dont click then that will be 3.5k down the tube.

This video taught me how to reverse an artic , my instructor was absolutley useless. I hadnt a clue what he was ramblin about so i looked for and found thix video.. very informative, thank you...
The thing to remember is being as left as possible at the start. So, head for the left cone when heading to the start position. This gives you plenty of space on your right side for your initial manoeuvre. After that, you can’t go wrong. Nice and slow, nice and steady.. it’s not a race 👍
Love it when you say minor adjustments only. First reaction is to put full lock on and then your struggling with full lock off. Looks easy on video but in real life situations..... good luck.
That's in Portsmouth. I done some cpc courses there and I recommend them.
Basically the same as the rigid test then except for the "opposite steering", nice video giving a good idea of what to expect, great drone footage

I struggle to do this in ETS and here you guys are making it look so easy IRL!
ETS2 doesn’t have crawler reverse, while real-life units do have this feature. This enables VERY slow reversing, which ETS2 doesn’t have, even with great peddles.

Day 1 in artic after my exams i had to back out a trailer on blind side from extremely tight yard. I did exam on draw bar so it was first time in the tractor. Needless to say all the training for an exam is a joke... But. Best advice i can pass on new drivers is first: ask your instructor at the end lf the day of you can can just try parking at funny angles, and second and probably best advice i ever got when i started driving is: it doesn't matter how long it will take you to reverse, if you don't hit anything or anyone andnu get home in one piece, it's a good day. And also as the old saying goes "don't be a c*nt, take a shunt" if you are not sure, get out and look, even multiple times. Its cheaper than any damage you can do!

Just failed my test today, touched the barrier as not really straight on. Should have used my second shunt.
The examiner said that I rushed toward the end but time was unimportant as long as you got the right result.

The video here is brilliant, you can see what they want you to do and when you are in the seat having practised with your instructor, the actions become second nature.
In the seat at the start, full right hand lock, watch for your trailer leg/marker in the left mirror. When level straighten up. Proceed back making minor adjustments. Use your shunts to get level and even spacing either side. Straight back.

My examiner had a saying. Don't be a C*** take the shunt lol. Had to a couple of times when training, but on test thankfully didn't need it. Hope you passed 2nd time.

My son has to do it with a four wheeler and a trailer , my old man had an eight wheeler and a trailer with a turntable but didn't have to take a test back in the 50s

Doing class 2. Did reverse perfectly when practicing and touched cone on test! It's nerves that kick in and you start making silly mistakes. I still went out and had a drive! Disappointed but will do a re-test. Good luck to everyone doing there class 1 or 2.
Unlucky , I know exactly what you mean. I've just passed my cat C first time. But I have to say that what was a seemingly easy reverse whilst training , became a whole different ball game on test. All the best next time.

I did the same on my D1 (Bus) I made the mistake of not steering as soon as I moved, and was sat waiting for the first cone to show and then I heard it hit the floor, the examiner made me still continue with the test knowing full well I had failed, luckily I passed next go, annoying as the reversing was so easy for me and like you say those nerves are evil and will get you if not careful, I have my Class 1 next month so cannot wait to get started.
@@will4may175 Class 1 reverse can be challenging. It's opposite steering.
He might have been doing you a favour Will. Gave you an hour of test time to help get over your nerves for the next time. From what I hear, they're far more positive than the old time testers. Good luck out there.

I passed Rigid and Artic truck 4 years ago both in first attempt. The guy who took my test he said it's very unusual for some1 to pass on first attempt. I did 2 mistakes on reverse first I was too far from kerb then too close and then on last 3rf attempt I did soo accurate. I was like big YESSSSSSSS.
Reverse is more tricky then anything
When I did my class 1 test 25 years ago, no-one noticed the B cone was not set back far enough making this manoeuvre more difficult. Fortunately I still did it first attempt and went on to pass.

As others said it's the same course for rigid, and also for a Bus licence, I am getting ready for my Cat C and I already have my PCV for buses so I shouldn't have any excuses for failing, hoping I can save enough to get the +E asap, wish I had done this decades ago.
How did you get on?
@@Infiniti25 Cat C was a doddle just the same as driving the bus but with gears.
A neighbour works for Maritime told him I was getting my licences and he said he'd put a word in, and they pay for your C+E (though hold you to a two year work or pay it back) so that's where I am now and loving it, once in a while I do a week of tramping (when my wife allows it) which was a lot more laid back than I expected plus a bump in wages.
99.9% containers so no handballing, a good job to take me to retirement, and came at the right time with bills going up.

I passed just over a week ago and I’ve been out two days last week with a fellow employees to visit some customer sites.
He has told the boss in his opinion I should be dinner going out on my own, but boss said while ever I can have that guy with me I’ll be getting additional experience, so I’m going out with him again tomorrow.
I’ve already been to on customer site where I had to have a few people guide me reversing off their tight site.
Even though I line up for a good side reverse, I have to get that close to the the gate post and pivot on the trailer wheels to avoid bollards on the path over the road (that prevent cars parking near the entrance) that I’m effectively blind reversing.
Can’t see those bollards at all and have to watch the headboard swing on the opposite gate post.
Enjoy the tramping, I’ve got to figure out what HGV friendly satnav to get and what gear to buy in to keep in my cab for nights out.
@@Infiniti25 Congratz on the pass, getting those hurdles out the way is a load off.
Easiest way to know if you can go it alone is tell the guy not to help or give hints unless you're going to ruin the day or get proper stuck, you'll be surprised how much you know and can stack your confidence with, a lot of drivers don't get help and just thrown the keys and left to it, Maritime do mentoring for 4-6 weeks which is great I was ready after a couple but it's nice to have that cushion while trying not to rely on the person with you.
Blind sides are a nightmare for a lot of drivers who avoid where ever possible, I still avoid angled reverses between two HGVs if I go to any services, and worry at some company yards with multiple bays as some think we're all god drivers and you have inches to spare all round.
I have a Tom Tom Trucker which is great but dont get the 6000 (I have it), its good but really slow so need a more up to date vers (not cheap), I've been filling mine with places over the country which takes a while to scroll through.
Road Lords a few drivers here swear by for your phone, I have it but not used yet, good old Google to use when checking the destination so you know what it looks like when you pull up (assuming google doesnt show you a field before it was developed into a site, which does happen), I've heard you can get Google to watch for weight limits and low bridges but no clue how so don't rely on it for routes unless really stuck but be careful.
The Merc truck I've been driving has Tom Tom built in, I like it as if I'm pulling up to or in a traffic jam on a motorway sometimes it'll offer me a faster route and tell me how much time I can save, hardest part is not being able to try different ones out and too expensive just to try then hate it.

I didn't know that this exercise was still being done. I did this in 1972. Sorry to say to any new drivers out there, but this exercise bears no relation to real life scenarios. Where are all the cars blocking the streets, or blowing their horns because you are holding them up? Pedestrians walking round the back of the trailer? Brick walls or fences about 3 metres in front of a loading bay? Apart from that, I still wouldn't have done any other job.
But some examiner say stay between two cones not close to left cone

How to know your in yellow ends position? Any mirror or reversing camera?
Dejay 844 - the right hand back mud flap has a peg on it that lines up with the markings on the floor.
I kept close to the left and the examiner made me move in to centre at the start
I think a permanent camera angle on the wheels in the bottom corner of the screen could be a good visual aid whilst watching this.
I failed twice on reversing clipped the B cone first time second time went over the yellow line test over, a fellow driver I remember said at the time don’t worry stick to class 2 at least you don’t have to work 15 hours a day poa at £10.50 per hour. Trying to make a living 😦

Its the same however here are the tips
Making sure you are over to the left cones before making the reverse .
Start pulling back and get almost full lock on watching in the mirror that the TYRE ( not the cab ) does not go over the line . Whilst doing this keep your eye open for that B cone .
Once you can see the cone you aim the drivers side rear tyre at the cone to skim it .
Once that tyre is along side the cone you can no longer hit it so its now time to get the other lock on to straighten for the box .
Reverse back but now you want to make sure you see the same amount of barrier in each mirror plus checking you are straight by looking into the mirrors and seeing where the side painted lines are .
Reverse back into the box using your in cab camera . If you have no camera when practicing you work out take a point on the painted lines to a point on the truck to know where the box starts and begins ( the edge of the mirror for example ). If in doubt , handbrake , out of gear , turn off ( important ) and get out and have a look . You get shunts for a reason , use them if at all in doubt .

I'm a car driver with a 6by4 trailer. I could reverse it up a fly's arse if I had to.
My theory is the longer the trailer the easier it is to manover.
I would so love to try this in a truck.

this manoeuvre is pretty straight forward. try doing it in a tight dock. bit different to your tiny trailer

It used to be only 1 shunt allowed back in 1990 they must have changed it
I've always thought it's ridiculous how this is all the reversing you do in your training and test. You can pass, go out the next day and have to make a 90 degree reverse in between two trailers on bays or worse when all you've been trained to do is go at a slight angle across a line.
Very true they don't teach you anything really, there should be a full course straight after passing on how to reverse properly

Yeah that's how it is in the U.S.A. You prove you can take the Rig around the block once, and you are set loose, haha. Granted you basically have to work for a big name company and they put you over the road for 3 months with someone else... catch is that person odds are have only been driving for 6 months lol.
It's like that everywhere I guess. You pass your test, get licence and then the real driving school starts :)

Helpful but on a test you don’t get the counter marker lines, it’s just the box
Depends where you do your test, on my rigid test they just used the trainer's yard.

I've failed on my test on reversing. Tuesday 22/10/2019 I will have another test if I pass will be brilliant if I fail I will try to find a job on classe 2 and next year I will try classe 1 again as it is very expensive to retake the tests.

At 4:44 it says the trailer starts reversing and in order to go left you steer over to the right surely initially you would steer left and adjust to the right accordingly?
Nah, right hand turn (or right hand down) to push the back of the trailer away to your passenger side (8 o'clock) . Chase it by turning to the left, holding it there until the tractor is on the driver's side (4 o'clock). Turn back right again to straighten the unit, obviously straightening the steering angle as you get closer to straight.
Unfortunately I failed this test today. I did the reversing fine and then examiner asked me to do the coupling uncoupling. When I finished that he said we don’t have enough time to drive on the road as I took long time (16 mins) in reversing so he failed me...! Which was absolutely annoying. Can anyone tell me how long one should spend on reversing, coupling uncoupling and driving. I still think this was unfair ...
Simbal1234 Hi sorry to here you failed your test today. You generally have about 1 and half hours to complete everything. The road drive must be at least an hour long, so to fail you for taking too long it a little harsh to say the least..!
Paul Moon Yes it was harsh as it says no where (as far as I know) that you should take only this much time for reversing or coupling uncoupling. My test time was 9:35 am but examiner came at around 9:51....and still blamed me.
Simbal1234 I would say you have good grounds to complain to the DVSA and get a free retest.
If this is a truth go dvsa and complain! They shoud have video records to verify if you are saying the truth. Even 20 is OK to do reversing and stuff. You also should ask egzaminer himself what is the time to do reversing.

Remember drivers, road safety is paramount hence the reason this part of the test is now been taken out!!!!!
It hasn't been taken out.... You still get assessed on this manoeuvre. The difference is you don't get accessed on this manoeuvre by the DVSA examiner. You get assessed by the training provider who near to stick to the strict rules.

Yes you still have to do the reverse maneuver,only it's done by an instructor at your training place and not by a dvsa tester

Its a choreagraphed move to get you through your test. Does not prepare you in any way for when youre out there on the road. Needs looking at
Its a video based on the reversing exercise as the title suggests.. if you are at the stage of looking into C+E you would have passed two maybe three test all ready and know what to expect out on the road..
Hard enough to find drivers now - it's only slow speed reversing.Make it harder you can get a bow and arrow and go hunting for your breakfast, there'll be no one to deliver it .
DAF is horrible for reversing. Heavy and slow steering wheel + the mirrors lie. After couple of years on Scania i switch on DAF (company choice, not mine) I feels like a newbie. this steering is shit (DAF). Oh, where is my good friend Scania? Poor me 😔😵💫
why bother the money and conditions are shite go do shelf stacking job less grief for the same money or do some thing else ie better jobs out there why do you think they cant keep drivers.in the industry having employ army and excons,
That's all well and good, but teaches you very little about real world reversing. I think loading bay reversing, reversing between two trailers, and at least show them how to blind side reverse, should be the very least driving schools should teach.
Driving schools teach you to get through the test, you don't start learning till you get out on the road, in the real world.

If you really want to make it real world open it up to allowing cars and pedestrians getting in the way I guarantee u the failure rate will soar.

Teaching to dog leg reverse in order to pass the test is a load of bollox .
It will not help in real life at a lidl RDC .
Driver training should cover all aspects not just to pass the test.
I totally agree with you on this, I wanted a career change so did my cat C followed by c+e together with a company like this and the whole way through I kept thinking I missing out on loads of important bits. Needles to say my first day as a class 1 driver first drop was 3hrs down road to a merchant yard off main road down a tight alley all in reverse followed by a blindside into yard through the worlds tightest set of gates. Took me 6 attempts by the 3rd attempt I was already panicking, however was over the moon once I was in! But it did leave me pissed off and angry that you can pass your test and be a qualified driver so easily and not be taught the manoeuvres which you will be doing most and which are the hardest to master as they are the things I personally should also be taught
Once we have brexit can we have a test rig up for the foreigners that are driving our British trucks as a lot of them don't know how to drive the bloody things. I've got videos after videos of Johnny flip-flops trying to reverse on the bay. In fact we are letting these type of people on our roads with these killing machines. I hope that dvsa (vosa) get together with the road haulage association and maybe have an exam to test these drivers. Just saying as i have been driving hgv1 for 30 years and I have never seen the standard of driving now these days are absolutely disgusting.
As I've been hearing that some of these foreign drivers have never done a proper test and their life as you can see the standard afraid we have got to blame ourselves for putting them on seats as it's called bums on seats. As I just feel that we are putting public in danger.
Darren Black the younger guys seem to be ok, but the older generation got their licence very often on the basis that they learnt to drive a 3,5T rigid lorry in army service. So obviously if you can drive an oversized van you can drive an artic.... in Belgium we had the same type of drivers up until the late 90’s. Steering wheel attendants who can only drive in a straight line along the motorway.
