Norm performed at Yuk Yuks in Halifax shortly after this. My buddy and I sat right in front of him so we became part of his act. Afterwards he invited us backstage for some fun and soon after the 3 of us went bar hopping. It’s truly an honour to have briefly connected with him.
When I look back on his reputation as a comic genius and consider that he spent about 3 hours with my friend and I, I can’t help but imagine that he thought we were a couple of knuckle dragging chimps compared to him. He was fun and hilarious up until we were too intoxicated to be good company when he went back to his hotel.
You made my day, if not my week or month with this clip. Simply incredible to be able to peer back in time to see him "in the wild" so to speak, riffing with friends in an intimate, safe-space of sorts, flexing his comic muscles. God bless.

Wow wow wow! Thank you, he was forever just tickling himself, so great to see. I graduated high school that year, and let me tell you, not everybody was walking around with a video camera, like today. So to have amateur footage is truly special. I'm so glad he went into comedy and not the world of high finance, working with his family, where he got screwed that one summer!
This is interesting - despite this being over 35 years ago, and I'm sure that it's obvious that his personality would develop over time, this almost seems like an entirely different person. His attitude and demeanor in this video is far more giddy, cool, confident. etc. Over time, it appears that he became more neurotic, isolated, and soft-spoken. Norm is an enigma; it's nearly impossible to decipher the character from the actual person. I really have no idea who the "real" Norm was.
He was my favorite since the “dating game” bit. I feel weird being so curious about all things Norm. He was all things...wit, brevity, painfully funny over-delivery. Just an old chunk of coal with a diamond inside.
