this is the time to shows your Strategy, for example, re-use the sprite from your first game , the enemy, the item, the background tree ... etc, I also making a game, I know there the most time- consuming is making the sprite (the art related asset), but, once you make something, there is no one force you to only use it at one game, you can use it at more than one game , so no need to feel bad to abandon the first game, because the asset is still there !! there is tons of way to do it .
My friend and I have been working on something and have multiple times restarted with a more realistic scope and better coding skills. We are on version 3 now, and we lovingly refer to version 1 and 2 as if they were real fully released games.
I know that feeling of treating your game like your baby. I also feel the same and eventually i feel burned out and i want to finish the game as soon as possible and at the same time i also feel like i wouldn't do it justice if i rushed it. So I stay in this constant state of overthinking and it's tiring tbh. Taking a break and doing something else helps tho but i don't think everyone has the time to take breaks because their livelihood depends on it.
Absolutely normal bro. Just avoid starting new projects trap (I felt to it and still very hard to stay on the same path). Making something new insanely fun but to make project to the end you will need to go trough not so pleasurable to overcome obstacles. Your understanding of technology, game theory and many more will grow over time, but it does not mean you need to start from scrath every time you starting to see your code as bad because you grew out of it.
Oh man, your analogy is not crazy at all. Failed baby projects can crush you and/or your team... I'm not a game developer, but I worked on user acquisition and product growth for mobile apps and games. I started with my bf 6 years ago, and I have learned a lot from our projects. Later on, I worked with indie mobile app and game devs and small companies. Anyway, my bf and I had this huge music app project that made around 2 million downloads total. We put years of work into it, but it wasn't sustainable, and it couldn't make enough money. Also, we released that we could have copyright issues, so we eventually had to shut the project down. It was crashing because we loved the project so much that we even started to form a community. But sometimes you need to do what you need to do and start all over. Btw, I just found your channel and I like your videos!
I don't think those hours could be considered wasted. You learn a lot of lessons while creating something. Even if you never finish the project, you still got a ton of knowledge and experience.
One of the most important lessons of game dev - fail faster. This is why it is better to start with systems not concepts. Because if you start with "I'm gonna make a gothic survival where you hunt Frankenstien through the european countryside" then you're setting yourself up to fail. Gameplay before the game, not vice versa. This way if the gameplay doesn't work as you want you can just fix it in the best way pissible rather than having solutions but dusgarding them because they don't fit the game concept.
its only wasted time if you didn't enjoy the journey. i love every minute of it and I'm glad I went it only. I'm the only black man I know that can actually do HS level math and I love to piss em off.
Brother I am 17 years old and I have already been in game development for 3 years now I am serious and I want to learn game design but I don't have any money and what do you think about game development in India how to get a first job.😶🌫

So true! What’s the story behind your game? How’s it going?

Dude, the love we have for our first games is WILD haha. You guy got this!

Totally agree. Keep at it! When you have the time and the energy to spend on it, you’ll make moves and see progress.

Such good insight! I appreciate the encouragement. Definitely have been in the new projects trap before.

Thats is WILD story, and a much harder decision I had to make haha. It's nice to know I'm not alone then haha, Thank you for stopping by!
@@SoulEngineDev It sure is! But if it forces you to learn and grow, the time is not wasted like you said. Keep it up!
Couldn't have said it better, thank you!
Sounds like it was a tough decision but made for the right reasons! Looking forward to seeing the progress on CaveMasters!
Thanks! We’re looking forward to releasing it!

So true. We’ve certainly learned a lot and we’re still learning!

I actually made a video about that very thing 'Failing Faster' ahaha I agree with everything you said!
I wish I have motivation to start a project so I can relate to this video
Keep at it! Starting is the hardest part.
@@SoulEngineDev I’ll keep trying to start
Baby analogy? ask thomas brush about that

That’s true, only wasted time if you don’t enjoy it. Keep up the work!
You could use a better microphone.
I know, for some reason, my auto is completely off in this one. Thanks for the feedback and being here!
